The central contrast is between neutral integration and an operator that claims the preverbal focus position. Neutral el akarom olvasni lets the infinitive's prefix climb before akarom. Negation or focus produces nem akarom elolvasni and holnap akarom elolvasni. A different contrast, nem elolvasni akarom, hanem átfutni, focuses the embedded event itself. These orders are not interchangeable stylistic variants.
Review the layouts on the forms page and their routine functions on the usage page. This page tests the boundaries, including cases where English word order gives no useful guidance.
Topic versus temporal focus
The same initial adverb can be a topic or focus. As a topic, it frames the statement and leaves neutral climbing intact. As focus, it selects one time against alternatives and blocks climbing.
Holnap el fogom olvasni a tanulmányt.
Tomorrow I'll read the study.
Holnap fogom elolvasni a tanulmányt, nem ma.
I'll read the study tomorrow, not today.
Ebéd után vissza kell vinnem az autót.
After lunch I have to return the car.
Csak ebéd után kell visszavinnem az autót.
I don't have to return the car until after lunch.
In the last sentence, English idiom uses not until, but Hungarian csak ebéd után supplies the narrow temporal focus. Prefix position confirms the structure: kell visszavinnem, not neutral vissza kell vinnem.
Negating the modal versus contrasting the action
Ordinary nem + finite modal + prefixed infinitive negates the higher modal relation. Fronting the infinitive creates a corrective contrast between embedded actions.
Nem akarom felhívni Annát.
I don't want to call Anna.
Nem felhívni akarom Annát, hanem személyesen beszélni vele.
I don't want to call Anna; I want to speak with her in person.
Nem tudom megjavítani a gépet.
I cannot repair the machine.
Nem megjavítani tudom a gépet, csak ideiglenesen működésre bírni.
I can't properly repair the machine; I can only get it working temporarily.
The second member of each pair needs a salient alternative and strong focus prosody. Without that corrective setting, fronted infinitives sound unfinished or change the intended scope.
Negative future versus denial of the future claim
Neutral nem fogom elolvasni predicts non-occurrence. Hungarian can also contrastively deny a previously asserted future predicate, but that requires explicit corrective context and is marked.
Nem fogom aláírni ezt a szerződést.
I will not sign this contract.
Nem aláírni fogom, hanem elutasítani.
I'm not going to sign it; I'm going to reject it.
The second is natural only when signing and rejecting are explicit alternatives. It places aláírni in contrastive focus before fogom. Ordinary future negation keeps alá- attached after fogom.
fog, akar, tud, kell versus non-climbing predicates
Prefix climbing is licensed by a restricted set of auxiliary-like or restructuring predicates. Many infinitive-taking verbs keep the lower prefix attached. Compare akar with szeret and próbál.
El akarom olvasni a novellát.
I want to read the short story.
Szeretem lefekvés előtt elolvasni a napi összefoglalót.
I like reading the daily summary before going to bed.
Meg tudom javítani a zárat.
I can repair the lock.
Megpróbálom megjavítani a zárat.
I will try to repair the lock.
The sentence with szeretem has the recurring but definite object a napi összefoglalót. Everyday Hungarian can instead say Szeretek novellát olvasni for a general preference. Crucially, lower el- does not yield neutral el szeretem olvasni. In megpróbálom megjavítani, the first meg- belongs to finite próbálom and the second to javítani; neither is a duplicate created by error.
There is no purely phonological test for restructuring. Learn the higher predicate together with a model chain. Lexical usage also varies in how natural a possible climb sounds.
One infinitive, two sources of participant marking
After personal akar/tud/fog, the finite ending identifies the shared actor. After impersonal kell, a personal infinitive can do so with possessive-like morphology.
El akarunk indulni hatkor.
We want to leave at six.
Hatkor el kell indulnunk.
We have to leave at six.
A vendégek ki fogják tölteni a regisztrációs lapot.
The guests will fill out the registration form.
A vendégeknek ki kell tölteniük a regisztrációs lapot.
The guests have to fill out the registration form.
In the first and third sentences, finite akarunk/fogják marks the actor. In the second and fourth, indulnunk/kapniuk marks it, while the overt noun is dative in the fourth. This is why nonfinite does not mean “without participant structure.”
Object agreement versus prefix placement
Object definiteness chooses the finite series of personal fog, akar, and tud, but it does not determine whether the prefix climbs. Focus can change position while the definite ending remains constant.
El akarom olvasni az új szerződést.
I want to read the new contract.
Holnap akarom elolvasni a jelentést.
I want to read the report tomorrow.
Both use definite akarom because a jelentést is definite. The first is neutral climbing; the second gives holnap narrow focus. With an indefinite object, both forms use akarok:
El akarok olvasni egy jelentést.
I want to read a report.
Csak holnap akarok elolvasni egy jelentést.
I want to read a report only tomorrow.
Subject agreement, object agreement, prefix position, and infinitive morphology are four different layers. English expresses none of the latter three on want to read.
Where person marking goes in long chains
When kell selects another infinitive-taking predicate, the selected infinitive—not automatically the lowest lexical verb—bears the actor suffix.
Meg kell próbálnunk kijavítani a hibát.
We have to try to correct the error.
El kell tudnia magyarázni az eredményt.
He has to be able to explain the result.
The forms are próbálnunk and tudnia, because these stand directly in the personal-infinitive relation with kell. Lower kijavítani and magyarázni share the actor by control and remain plain.
Neutral long-distance climbing is clearest with restructuring tud:
Meg fogjuk tudni oldani a feladatot.
We will be able to solve the task.
Under negation, meg- returns to the lowest infinitive:
Nem fogjuk tudni megoldani a feladatot.
We will not be able to solve the task.
Chains with several possible prefixes require lexical analysis. Meg fogjuk próbálni kijavítani has meg- from megpróbálni, while ki- remains with non-climbing kijavítani.
Register and processing weight
Dense chains are not automatically formal. A common conversational sentence such as Nem fogom tudni befejezni is (informal or neutral) and effortless. A chain becomes difficult when several modals, participants, and complements compete.
Sajnos nem fogom tudni ma befejezni.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to finish it today.
Formal prose often replaces an overloaded chain with an explicit subordinate clause (formal):
Nem valószínű, hogy az intézmény határidőre végre tudja hajtani az intézkedést.
It is unlikely that the institution can implement the measure by the deadline.
The subordinate clause makes the actor and evaluation easier to process. Hungarian permits compression but does not reward it unconditionally.
Decision tree
- Identify the lexical prefixed infinitive: elolvasni, megjavítani, visszavinni.
- Is the higher predicate a climbing carrier such as fog, akar, tud, or kell? If not, keep the prefix with its infinitive.
- Is the clause a neutral affirmative with no narrow preverbal focus? Climb the prefix: el fogom olvasni.
- Is ordinary nem, a wh-word, or contrastive focus immediately before the carrier? Keep the prefix attached: nem fogom elolvasni; mikor fogod elolvasni?
- Is the embedded action itself being contrasted? Front the intact infinitive only with a clear alternative: nem elolvasni akarom, hanem átfutni.
- Is the carrier personal? Mark its subject and the lower direct object's definiteness on it. Is it impersonal kell? Put the logical actor on the licensed personal infinitive.
- With multiple infinitives, trace prefix origin and participant control one layer at a time.
Diagnostic exercise
- Neutral “I will return the book tomorrow.” → Holnap vissza fogom vinni a könyvet. Tomorrow is a frame, vissza- climbs, and definite fogom reflects a könyvet.
- “I will return it on Friday, not Thursday.” → Pénteken fogom visszavinni, nem csütörtökön. Narrow time focus blocks climbing.
- “We do not need to correct it.” → Nem kell kijavítanunk. nem blocks climbing; kijavítanunk marks first-person plural.
- “We will be able to correct it.” → Ki fogjuk tudni javítani. ki- climbs across tudni to definite fogjuk.
- “We will not be able to correct it.” → Nem fogjuk tudni kijavítani. Negation blocks long-distance climbing.
Common Mistakes
❌ Csak pénteken vissza kell vinnem a könyvet.
Incorrect for narrow ‘only Friday’ focus — the prefix must remain with the infinitive.
✅ Csak pénteken kell visszavinnem a könyvet.
I don't have to return the book until Friday.
❌ El szeretem olvasni a napi összefoglalót este.
Incorrect neutral climbing — szeret does not license this pattern.
✅ Szeretem este elolvasni a napi összefoglalót.
I like reading the daily summary in the evening.
❌ A vendégeknek ki kell töltenie az űrlapot.
Incorrect agreement — the plural logical subject requires -niük, not third-person singular -nie.
✅ A vendégeknek ki kell tölteniük az űrlapot.
The guests have to fill out the form.
❌ Jövőre meg fogunk tudni oldjuk ezt a feladatot.
Incorrect — the lower lexical verb must remain an infinitive, and the definite object requires fogjuk.
✅ Jövőre meg fogjuk tudni oldani ezt a feladatot.
Next year we will be able to solve this task.
Key Takeaways
- Neutral climbing and focus-blocked attachment encode different information structures.
- Ordinary modal negation differs from contrastive fronting of the embedded infinitive.
- Climbing is lexically licensed; fog, akar, tud, and kell differ from many ordinary infinitive-taking verbs.
- Object agreement can remain unchanged while focus moves the prefix.
- Personal infinitives preserve the actor with possessive-like endings, including inside longer chains.
- Long chains should be analyzed predicate by predicate and recast when participant relations become hard to process.
