Hungarian infinitive chains distribute grammar across several words. A finite carrier such as fog, akar, or tud marks the subject and may agree with a definite object; impersonal kell can place the actor on a personal infinitive. Meanwhile, a verbal prefix belonging semantically to the infinitive may appear before the finite carrier in neutral order: el fogom olvasni, literally “away/read-through I-will it to-read.”
This is not free rearrangement. Finiteness, negation, focus, and the lexical identity of the higher verb determine where the prefix can occur. This page establishes the formal patterns. The usage page develops them in real discourse, and the contrasts page handles competing scopes and lexical exceptions. Unless marked otherwise, the forms are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
Anatomy of an infinitive chain
A simple personal chain has a finite higher verb and a plain -ni infinitive. The two usually share an understood subject.
Dóra tud vezetni.
Dóra can drive.
Szeretnénk korán indulni.
We would like to leave early.
The finite word identifies the subject: tud, third-person singular; szeretnénk, first-person plural conditional. The infinitive contributes the lexical event without tense. It is therefore misleading to call the infinitive “invariant” in the English sense: Hungarian also has personal infinitives in licensed impersonal constructions.
Dórának korán kell indulnia.
Dóra has to leave early.
Here kell is impersonal. Dative Dórának names the actor, and indulnia repeats third-person singular through possessive-like morphology. The form is nonfinite but preserves a participant relation.
Neutral prefix climbing
With a prefixed lexical infinitive, fog, akar, tud, and kell commonly permit the prefix to stand immediately before the higher finite or modal carrier in a neutral affirmative clause. The lexical verb keeps its infinitive ending.
| Carrier | Lexical infinitive | Neutral chain | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| fog | elolvasni | el fogom olvasni | I will read it through |
| akar | megnézni | meg akarjuk nézni | we want to look at it |
| tud | kijavítani | ki tudják javítani | they can correct it |
| kell | visszavinni | vissza kell vinnem | I have to take it back |
Este el fogom olvasni a szerződést.
I'll read the contract this evening.
Meg akarjuk nézni azt a kiállítást.
We want to see that exhibition.
Ezt a hibát könnyen ki tudják javítani.
They can easily correct this error.
Holnap vissza kell vinnem a könyveket a könyvtárba.
I have to take the books back to the library tomorrow.
The climbed prefix is written as a separate word because it is not adjacent to its own verb: el fogom olvasni, not elfogom olvasni. In elolvasni, by contrast, adjacent el- and olvasni form one written word.
When fog combines with an unprefixed lexical verb, the infinitive itself commonly occupies the neutral preverbal position:
Holnap délelőtt dolgozni fogok itthon.
I'll work at home tomorrow morning.
Holnap délelőtt fogok itthon dolgozni instead makes holnap délelőtt the narrow focus: “It is tomorrow morning that I'll work at home.”
Finite agreement sees through the infinitive
Personal fog, akar, and tud choose indefinite or definite conjugation according to the infinitive phrase's direct object. This is long-distance object agreement, independent of prefix climbing.
El fogok olvasni egy cikket.
I will read an article.
El fogom olvasni a cikket.
I will read the article.
Meg akarok kérdezni valamit.
I want to ask something.
Meg akarom kérdezni az igazgatót.
I want to ask the director.
Indefinite egy cikket, valamit select fogok, akarok; definite a cikket, az igazgatót select fogom, akarom. The infinitive remains olvasni/kérdezni in either case. Impersonal kell has no definite conjugation: object reference does not change kell, and the suffix on olvasnom marks its actor, not its object.
El kell olvasnom egy cikket és a szerződést is.
I have to read an article and the contract as well.
Negation blocks neutral climbing
Ordinary nem stands before the finite carrier. The lexical prefix normally returns to its infinitive and is written attached to it.
Nem fogom elolvasni a szerződést.
I won't read the contract.
Nem akarjuk megnézni azt a kiállítást.
We don't want to see that exhibition.
Ezt a hibát nem tudják kijavítani.
They cannot correct this error.
Nem kell holnap visszavinnem a könyveket.
I don't have to take the books back tomorrow.
The contrast is formal and visible: neutral el fogom olvasni versus negative nem fogom elolvasni. Negation does not alter the infinitive suffix, the finite subject, or object agreement.
Focus also blocks climbing
A contrastively focused phrase occupies the immediately preverbal position. The prefix then stays with the infinitive. Capital letters below are unnecessary; the context and correction identify the focus.
Holnap fogom elolvasni a szerződést, nem ma.
I will read the contract tomorrow, not today.
Csak ezt a fejezetet akarom elolvasni.
I want to read only this chapter.
Ki tudja megjavítani a nyomtatót?
Who can repair the printer?
In the first two examples, holnap and csak ezt a fejezetet are narrow focus. In the question, focused ki precedes tudja, so meg- stays on megjavítani. A clause-initial topic does not necessarily block climbing: Holnap el fogom olvasni can simply set tomorrow as the frame, without contrasting it.
Finite focus versus infinitive focus
Ordinary nem akarom elolvasni negates the wanting: “I do not want to read it.” If the speaker contrasts the embedded actions, the infinitive itself can become focus before akar.
Nem akarom felhívni Pétert.
I don't want to call Péter.
Nem felhívni akarom Pétert, hanem üzenetet küldeni neki.
I don't want to call Péter; I want to send him a message.
The second order is marked corrective discourse. felhívni is an intact prefixed infinitive placed before akarom, and nem ... hanem contrasts two event descriptions. It is not the default negative pattern.
Multiple infinitives
Chains can contain more than one infinitive. In meg fogom tudni oldani, finite fogom carries first-person subject and definite-object agreement, tudni contributes ability, and oldani contributes the lexical event. Prefix meg- belongs to oldani but climbs across tudni in the neutral pattern.
Meg fogom tudni oldani ezt a problémát.
I will be able to solve this problem.
Nem fogom tudni megoldani ezt a problémát egyedül.
I won't be able to solve this problem alone.
With impersonal kell, the first infinitive selected by kell carries participant marking; a lower controlled infinitive stays plain.
El kell tudnunk magyarázni a döntést.
We need to be able to explain the decision.
Here tudnunk marks “we” with possessive-like morphology, while magyarázni is controlled by that same participant. This is the distinguishing property of Hungarian nonfinite architecture: even without finite tense, participant relations can remain morphologically visible.
Long chains are grammatical but cognitively heavy. Formal technical prose may tolerate them; everyday speech often recasts them as two clauses. Do not create chains merely because English allows several auxiliaries.
Lexical limits on climbing
Not every higher verb licenses climbing. szeret “like,” próbál “try,” and elfelejt “forget” normally keep a lower infinitive's prefix with that infinitive.
Szeretek este elolvasni egy novellát.
I like reading a short story in the evening.
Megpróbálom kijavítani a hibát.
I'll try to correct the error.
In the second sentence, meg- belongs to finite próbálom, while ki- belongs to javítani. Forms such as ki próbálom javítani do not follow the neutral standard pattern. Licensing is partly lexical and must be learned with the higher predicate.
Segmentation exercise
- el fog-om olvas-ni a cikk-et = climbed prefix + fog with first-person definite ending + lexical infinitive + definite accusative object.
- nem fog-om el-olvas-ni = negator + finite carrier + attached lexical prefix and infinitive.
- vissza kell vin-n-em a könyv-ek-et = climbed directional prefix + impersonal modal + irregular personal infinitive + plural accusative object.
- meg fog-om tud-ni old-a-ni a feladat-ot = long-distance climbed prefix + finite future carrier + ability infinitive + linking-vowel lexical infinitive + definite object.
- el kell tud-n-unk magyaráz-ni = climbed prefix + impersonal necessity + first-person plural personal infinitive + controlled plain infinitive.
Common Mistakes
❌ Elfogom olvasni a cikket.
Incorrect spelling for the intended future chain — climbed el is a separate word before fogom.
✅ A cikket el fogom olvasni vacsora után.
I will read the article after dinner.
❌ Nem el fogom olvasni a cikket.
Incorrect neutral negation — the prefix returns to the lexical infinitive.
✅ Nem fogom elolvasni a cikket.
I will not read the article.
❌ El akarok olvasom a könyvet.
Incorrect — the lower verb must be an infinitive, and the definite object requires akarom.
✅ El akarom olvasni a könyvet.
I want to read the book.
❌ Nekünk el kell tudnia magyarázni a döntést.
Incorrect agreement — the first-person plural logical subject requires tudnunk, not third-person singular tudnia.
✅ Nekünk el kell tudnunk magyarázni a döntést.
We need to be able to explain the decision.
Key Takeaways
- fog, akar, tud, and kell commonly license neutral prefix climbing from a lexical infinitive.
- A climbed prefix is written separately: el fogom olvasni; attached to its own infinitive, it is one word: elolvasni.
- Ordinary negation and narrow preverbal focus block climbing.
- Personal finite carriers can agree with the lowest infinitive's direct object; impersonal kell instead licenses possessive-like person marking on an infinitive.
- Multiple infinitives are possible, but participant marking, object agreement, and prefix origin must each be analyzed separately.
- Climbing is lexically restricted: many higher verbs keep the lower prefix attached to its infinitive.
