Prefix Placement with Focus, Negation, Questions, and Auxiliaries: Meanings and Usage

Hungarian verbal prefixes such as meg-, el-, ki-, be-, fel-, le-, át-, and vissza- can stand directly before their verb or appear elsewhere in the clause. Their position is not decoration: it signals whether the clause is neutral, negated, focused, questioned, commanded, or built around an auxiliary-like verb. English phrasal verbs do not provide a safe model because Hungarian placement responds to information structure.

This page develops the patterns introduced on the prefix-order forms page. Unless marked otherwise, the examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Neutral statements: prefix immediately before the finite verb

In a broad-focus affirmative statement—an ordinary answer to “What happened?”—the prefix normally stands immediately before the finite verb and is written together with it.

Réka tegnap elolvasta a teljes jelentést.

Réka read the entire report yesterday.

A gyerekek már felvették a kabátjukat.

The children have already put on their coats.

The prefixed verbs elolvasta and felvették present the events as bounded or completed. The definite endings are selected by a teljes jelentést and a kabátjukat. Prefix placement and object agreement are separate but simultaneous choices.

A fronted topic does not by itself trigger separation. Réka tegnap and a gyerekek establish what the sentence is about; the neutral prefix still sits immediately before the verb.

💡
Do not count every phrase before the verb as “focus.” Topics can occur earlier without disturbing prefix–verb order. Separation occurs when a focus-bearing or negative element occupies the immediately preverbal position.

Negation: nem takes the preverbal position

Ordinary sentence negation places nem immediately before the finite verb. A prefix that would be preverbal in the positive clause follows the verb as a separate word.

Réka nem olvasta el a teljes jelentést.

Réka didn't read the entire report.

Még nem kapcsoltam ki a számítógépet.

I haven't turned off the computer yet.

Compare elolvasta → nem olvasta el and kikapcsoltam → nem kapcsoltam ki. The lexical relationship survives separation: el still belongs with olvas, and ki still belongs with kapcsol.

This placement applies across tense and mood. In an ordinary negative future with fog, the prefix attaches to the infinitive:

Holnap nem fogom bekapcsolni az értesítéseket.

I won't turn on notifications tomorrow.

The definite form fogom is controlled by az értesítéseket. English speakers often get either the order or agreement right, but Hungarian requires both.

Contrastive focus: the focused phrase replaces the prefix

A sharply contrasted constituent stands immediately before the finite verb and receives the main sentence stress. The prefix then follows the verb.

Réka a jelentést olvasta el, nem a mellékleteket.

Réka read the report, not the appendices.

Csak pénteken küldjük el a szerződést.

We'll send the contract only on Friday.

In speech, a jelentést and pénteken receive the main contrastive stress. Ordinary spelling does not mark that prominence; context and particles such as csak help identify the focus.

Focus does more than move a prefix. It answers an implicit alternative question: which thing? which day? who? In csak pénteken, the day is exclusive, so küldjük el follows. A mere scene-setting time phrase can leave the prefix attached:

Jövő héten elküldjük a végleges szerződést.

Next week we'll send the final contract.

The event can be identical, but the second version neutrally announces the plan rather than correcting the date.

Questions: wh-focus versus yes/no questioning

Hungarian wh-words normally occupy the focus position, so they trigger postverbal prefix placement.

Mikor külditek el a meghívókat?

When are you sending the invitations?

Ki vitte vissza a kulcsot a portára?

Who took the key back to reception?

Melyik filmet néztétek meg tegnap?

Which film did you watch yesterday?

The interrogative asks for the missing focused value, and the prefix follows külditek, vitte, néztétek. The definite endings remain necessary because a meghívókat, a kulcsot, and melyik filmet are definite objects.

A neutral yes/no question does not automatically cause separation:

Elküldtétek már a meghívókat?

Have you sent the invitations yet?

The clause keeps elküldtétek together. The optional question clitic -e, common in careful and formal questioning, attaches to the finite verb: Elküldtétek-e már a meghívókat? (formal). It does not split the prefix from that verb.

Commands and requests

In a positive imperative, the finite imperative typically comes before its prefix. Negative commands also place the prefix after the verb because ne occupies the negative position.

Kapcsold be a lámpát, kérlek!

Turn on the light, please!

Ne kapcsold ki a telefont az értekezlet alatt!

Don't turn off your phone during the meeting!

Írják alá mindkét példányt!

Please sign both copies.

The third sentence is a respectful or plural instruction; in an office addressed respectfully it is (formal). The imperative endings still distinguish subject and object agreement. A lámpát, a telefont, and mindkét példányt select definite forms.

Infinitive chains: prefix climbing

With verbs such as akar “want,” tud “can/know how,” szeretne “would like,” and future auxiliary fog, the infinitive's prefix often moves in front of the finite verb in a neutral positive clause. This is commonly called prefix climbing.

Ma be akarom fejezni a pályázatot.

I want to finish the application today.

Ezt a hibát könnyen ki tudjuk javítani.

We can easily correct this error.

Jövő héten vissza fogom vinni a könyveket.

I'll take the books back next week.

The sequence is be + akarom + fejezni, not a single written word. The finite carrier akarom/tudjuk/fogom bears subject and definite-object agreement, controlled by the infinitive's object.

Negation or preverbal focus blocks neutral climbing, and the prefix attaches to the infinitive:

Ma nem akarom befejezni a pályázatot.

I don't want to finish the application today.

Csak holnap tudjuk kijavítani ezt a hibát.

We can correct this error only tomorrow.

Not every finite verb behaves alike, and not every initial syllable is a separable prefix. Learn frequent auxiliary patterns and lexicalized verbs as constructions; forms such as ellenőriz “check” and befolyásol “influence” do not split into productive ellen + őriz or be + folyásol in ordinary modern usage.

💡
In an infinitive chain, identify the semantic prefix's verb first. In neutral order it may “climb” before the finite carrier; after nem or a focus, it normally returns to the infinitive.

A short troubleshooting dialogue

This exchange is (informal):

Bekapcsoltad a kávéfőzőt?

Did you turn on the coffee maker?

Nem kapcsoltam be, mert nem találtam meg a kapcsolót.

I didn't turn it on because I couldn't find the switch.

Hol találtad meg végül?

Where did you finally find it?

A gép alatt találtam meg; valószínűleg begurult oda.

I found it under the machine; it had probably rolled there.

The yes/no question keeps bekapcsoltad together. Negation produces nem kapcsoltam be and nem találtam meg. Wh-focus gives hol találtad meg, and locational focus gives a gép alatt találtam meg.

Formal and informal packaging

An everyday reminder may use an imperative (informal):

Ne felejtsd el elküldeni a számlát!

Don't forget to send the invoice!

An administrative request may use a deferential imperative and an infinitive chain (formal):

Kérjük, legkésőbb péntekig szíveskedjen visszaküldeni az aláírt nyilatkozatot.

Please return the signed declaration by Friday at the latest.

Szíveskedjen is a formal politeness verb; vissza- remains with küldeni because the finite imperative occupies the main verbal position. The formal wording changes register, not the core information-structure rule.

Common Mistakes

❌ Nem elolvastam a levelet.

Incorrect for ordinary sentence negation — the prefix must follow the finite verb.

✅ Nem olvastam el a levelet.

I didn't read the letter.

❌ Mikor megérkezett a csomag?

Incorrect neutral wh-question order — the prefix follows the verb.

✅ Mikor érkezett meg a csomag?

When did the package arrive?

❌ Holnap akarom befejezni a munkát.

Misleading for neutral 'I want to finish it tomorrow' if holnap is not contrastive; this order focuses tomorrow.

✅ Holnap be akarom fejezni a munkát.

Tomorrow I want to finish the work.

❌ Be kapcsoltam a fűtést.

Incorrect spelling in neutral order — an adjacent prefix and finite verb form one written word.

✅ Bekapcsoltam a fűtést.

I turned on the heating.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral affirmative clauses place the prefix directly before the finite verb and write the two together.
  • Ordinary nem, preverbal focus, wh-words, and imperatives place the finite verb before the separate prefix.
  • A yes/no question alone does not reverse prefix–verb order.
  • Prefixes can climb before akar, tud, szeretne, fog, while negation or focus normally returns them to the infinitive.
  • Prosody distinguishes a neutral topic from the stressed preverbal focus that triggers separation.
  • Prefix position works together with tense, mood, subject, and object agreement; it never removes the definite/indefinite choice.
