Verbal Prefixes: Lexicon, Direction, and Telicity: Meanings and Usage

Hungarian speakers use verbal prefixes to organize paths, endpoints, results, and whole lexical meanings. Ki- can direct motion out, vissza- can reverse it, meg- can help package a completed result, and felhív means “telephone” without describing upward movement. A prefix therefore contributes to a verb's meaning, but its contribution ranges from transparent to fully lexicalized.

The forms page introduces the inventory and spelling. This page follows the meanings speakers need in real situations; the contrast page handles close lexical choices. Unless labeled otherwise, the examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Tracking a physical path

The clearest prefix use locates movement relative to a reference place. Be-/ki- contrast inward and outward movement; fel-/le- contrast upward and downward movement; át- crosses a boundary or route; el- moves away; vissza- returns toward an earlier place.

Bemegyek a pékségbe, te addig várj kint!

I'm going into the bakery; wait outside in the meantime!

A gyerekek kiszaladtak az udvarra, amikor elállt az eső.

The children ran out into the courtyard when the rain stopped.

Felmentünk a harmadik emeletre, aztán lifttel lejöttünk.

We went up to the third floor, then came down by lift.

Átment a zebrán, majd visszafordult a gyógyszertár felé.

She crossed at the pedestrian crossing, then turned back toward the pharmacy.

The prefix gives a schematic path; the case-marked phrase identifies a goal, source, or route. A pékségbe is illative “into the bakery,” az udvarra is sublative “onto/to the courtyard,” and a harmadik emeletre is a goal conceived as a level. English particles cannot predict the Hungarian case.

With caused motion, the object moves and the finite verb must agree with its reference class.

Kiviszem a szemetet, aztán behozom a biciklit.

I'll take the rubbish out, then bring the bicycle in.

Definite a szemetet and a biciklit select kiviszem/behozom. Prefix choice gives direction; object definiteness gives conjugation.

💡
For a motion verb, learn a three-part frame: prefixed verb, moving entity, and case-marked path. Bemegy a boltba and kimegy a boltból are more useful units than isolated be- and ki-.

Presenting an endpoint or achieved result

Some prefix–verb pairs contrast an activity with reaching its conventional endpoint. The time expression often makes the difference visible.

Egész délelőtt szerkesztette a cikket, de nem fejezte be.

She edited the article all morning but didn't finish it.

Délig megírta a jelentést, és elküldte a főnökének.

She had written the report by noon and sent it to her boss.

A vonaton elolvastam az egész könyvet.

I read the whole book through on the train.

Megír presents the report as completed; elolvas conventionally presents reading through the object. A prefix can combine with any tense or mood: megírta is past, megírom is present morphology with a frequent planned-future reading, and megírnám is conditional. Completion is not another tense.

The prefix also interacts with discourse viewpoint. In a neutral result report it precedes the verb, but an ongoing scene may place it after:

Éppen vitte le a szemetet, amikor megszólalt a telefonja.

He was just taking the rubbish down when his phone rang.

Here vitte le presents the downward movement in progress. Prefix position participates in viewpoint and information structure; the detailed triggers belong to prefix-order usage.

Lexicalized everyday verbs

Many common prefixed verbs cannot be translated by adding the prefix's spatial gloss. Learn them as vocabulary with their normal complement pattern.

Felhívtam a rendelőt, és kértem egy új időpontot.

I called the clinic and asked for a new appointment.

Lemondtuk a hétvégi kirándulást az időjárás miatt.

We canceled the weekend trip because of the weather.

Kiderült, hogy rossz címre küldték a csomagot.

It turned out that they sent the parcel to the wrong address.

Az új mosógép nagyon bevált.

The new washing machine has worked out very well.

There is no literal upward path in felhív, downward path in lemond, or inward path in beválik. Kiderül historically contains ki-, but synchronically means “become clear/turn out.” Trying to derive these meanings every time makes comprehension slower and encourages invented combinations.

Some prefixes create families rather than one predictable rule. Átad “hand over,” átír “rewrite/transfer into another name,” and átgondol “think through again” all involve a kind of transfer or traversal, but their argument structures differ.

Átadtam a kulcsot az új bérlőnek.

I handed the key over to the new tenant.

Még egyszer átgondolom a javaslatodat.

I'll think your proposal over once more.

Abstract extensions in work and study

Prefixes remain frequent when no physical object moves. Formal and academic vocabulary often packages abstract transitions with the same inventory.

A megbeszélésen felmerült egy váratlan probléma.

An unexpected problem came up at the meeting.

A tanulmány lépésről lépésre levezeti a képletet.

The study derives the formula step by step. (academic)

A vita végén visszatérünk az eredeti kérdésre.

At the end of the discussion, we will return to the original question.

Felmerül is a conventional abstract “arise,” levezet presents a formula as derived step by step, and visszatér returns to a discourse topic. These are standard in academic prose (academic), but the individual verbs have their own register profiles. Prefixes themselves are not automatically formal.

Valency can change with the lexical verb

Compare beszél and megbeszél:

Beszéltem Annával a költözésről.

I spoke with Anna about the move.

Megbeszéltem Annával a költözést.

I discussed the move with Anna.

Unprefixed beszél takes instrumental Annával and delative a költözésről. Prefixed megbeszél makes a költözést a definite accusative object, so the verb uses definite megbeszéltem. The difference is not just aspect; the lexical frame has changed.

Another pair is kerül/elkerül:

A régi fotó végül a múzeumba került.

The old photograph eventually ended up in the museum.

Szerencsére elkerültük a reggeli dugót.

Fortunately, we avoided the morning traffic jam.

Kerül here takes a goal, whereas elkerül takes definite accusative a reggeli dugót and therefore definite elkerültük. A learner who translates only the English meaning may miss both the case frame and the conjugation.

💡
Whenever a prefix produces a new dictionary meaning, relearn the verb's valency. Ask not only “what does it mean?” but also “what case does each participant take, and is there a definite direct object?”

A short dialogue about errands

This exchange is everyday conversation (informal):

– Bemész még a boltba? – Igen, de előbb kiviszem a szemetet.

– Are you still going into the shop? – Yes, but first I'll take the rubbish out.

– Akkor visszahoznál egy üveg ásványvizet? – Persze, felírom a listára.

– Then could you bring back a bottle of mineral water? – Sure, I'll put it on the list.

Be-/ki-/vissza- trace actual movements. Felír is lexicalized “write down/add to a list.” Conditional visszahoznál softens the request; definite felírom has the understood item as its object. The prefixes do not determine mood or agreement.

Formal and informal packaging

Compare two descriptions of rejected paperwork:

A hatóság elutasította a kérelmet, és visszaküldte a hiányos mellékleteket.

The authority rejected the application and returned the incomplete attachments. (formal)

Nem fogadták el a papírokat, úgyhogy visszaküldték őket.

They didn't accept the papers, so they sent them back. (informal)

Elutasít and melléklet belong readily to administrative prose (formal). Everyday speech (informal) prefers the transparent negated nem fogadták el and general papírok. Both use prefix syntax and definite object agreement: a kérelmet, a mellékleteket, a papírokat, and őket are definite.

Lexical restrictions worth accepting

English up, down, in, and out also form unpredictable phrasal verbs; Hungarian prefixes are similarly lexical. Felhív is “phone,” but felbeszél is not a general word for “speak up.” Lemond is “cancel/resign,” but it does not mean every kind of downward speech. Meg- often supports a result, yet meghall simply means “hear,” and megszeret means “come to like.”

There is no clean shortcut. Verify unfamiliar combinations in a dictionary and store frequent prefixed verbs as full lexical entries. Productive spatial composition helps, but native usage decides which abstract extensions exist.

Common Mistakes

❌ Egész délelőtt megírta a jelentést, de nem fejezte be.

Incorrect aspectual combination — megírta presents the report as completed, contradicting the explicit noncompletion.

✅ Egész délelőtt írta a beszámolót, de nem fejezte be.

She worked on the report all morning but didn't finish it.

❌ Megbeszéltem Annával a költözésről.

Incorrect for ‘discussed the move’ — megbeszél takes the topic as an accusative direct object.

✅ Megbeszéltem a költözést Annával.

I discussed the move with Anna.

❌ Nem felhívtam a rendelőt.

Incorrect neutral negation — the prefix follows the finite verb.

✅ Nem hívtam fel a rendelőt.

I didn't call the clinic.

❌ Megnézek a lakást délután.

Incorrect — definite a lakást requires definite conjugation.

✅ Megnézem a lakást délután.

I'll view the apartment this afternoon.

Key Takeaways

  • Spatial prefixes locate motion relative to a reference place, while case-marked complements specify goals, sources, and routes.
  • Meg- and other prefixes can help present an endpoint, but prefix meaning is lexical and is not a tense.
  • Everyday prefixed verbs such as felhív, lemond, kiderül, and beválik cannot be derived reliably from literal direction.
  • Prefixation may change valency, so case marking and definite conjugation must be relearned with the lexical verb.
  • Concrete prefixes extend into abstract academic and administrative vocabulary without becoming a separate formal system.
  • Prefix meaning, position, subject agreement, object reference, tense, and mood all contribute independently to the finished clause.
