A Job Interview

Kiss Andrea is interviewing Fekete Gábor for a customer-service coordinator position at a logistics company in Debrecen. They use distanced address throughout. The exchange is a realistic first-round interview: it covers employment history, language and software ability, a situational problem, availability, and the candidate’s own questions. Read the dialogue for its overall professional tone before examining individual endings.

The complete Hungarian interview

Kiss Andrea: Jó napot kívánok, Fekete úr! Fáradjon be, és foglaljon helyet!

Idiomatic English translation

Andrea Kiss: Good afternoon, Mr Fekete. Do come in and take a seat.

Gábor Fekete: Good afternoon. Thank you.

Andrea Kiss: Please introduce yourself briefly and tell me why you applied for this position.

Gábor Fekete: I worked as a customer-service representative at a freight-forwarding company for three years. I would like to take on more responsibility, which is why I applied for the coordinator position.

Andrea Kiss: What kinds of tasks did you handle in your previous job?

Gábor Fekete: I tracked orders, coordinated with customers, and was responsible for reporting delays.

Andrea Kiss: Can you negotiate in English over the phone?

Gábor Fekete: Yes. I spoke to international partners every day and also wrote the confirmations in English.

Andrea Kiss: Which computer systems are you familiar with?

Gábor Fekete: I know CargoSoft well, but I have not used your system yet. I learn quickly.

Andrea Kiss: What would you do if two urgent complaints arrived at the same time?

Gábor Fekete: First, I would check which case affected more shipments. Then I would call both customers back and give them a precise deadline.

Andrea Kiss: When could you start?

Gábor Fekete: I could start at the beginning of next month.

Andrea Kiss: Do you have any questions about the role?

Gábor Fekete: Yes. How large a team would I be working with, and how often would I have to work at weekends?

Andrea Kiss: You would work with a team of six. You would have to take at most one Saturday shift per month.

Gábor Fekete: I understand, thank you.

Andrea Kiss: Thank you for coming. We will notify you of the outcome by Friday.

Gábor Fekete: Thank you for the opportunity. Goodbye.

The English version uses please and modal verbs to recreate the tone; it does not map each one to a separate Hungarian courtesy word. It also reverses Hungarian personal-name order.

Decision 1: formal address controls person agreement

The interviewer uses Fekete úr and third-person singular forms: fáradjon, foglaljon, mutatkozzon, jelentkezett, and tudna. These verbs mean “you” in context but agree as third person. Gábor reciprocates with formal formulas and never switches to second-person te forms.

Jó napot kívánok, Fekete úr! Fáradjon be, és foglaljon helyet!

Good afternoon, Mr Fekete. Do come in and take a seat. (formal)

Fáradjon be is a conventional courteous invitation (formal); its literal lexical meaning involving weariness is irrelevant here. Foglaljon helyet is more formal than everyday üljön le, though both use third-person imperative morphology under distanced address.

💡
In a formal interview, “you” is a discourse meaning, not second-person grammar. Track the third-person chain from Fekete úr through jelentkezett, tudna, kérdése, and vállalnia.

Decision 2: questions need no equivalent of English do

Hungarian forms content questions by placing the question phrase immediately before the finite verb. Miért jelentkezett...?, Milyen feladatokkal foglalkozott...?, Mit tenne...?, and Mikor tudna kezdeni? contain no auxiliary corresponding to English did/do.

Kérem, röviden mondja el, miért jelentkezett erre az állásra.

Please briefly explain why you applied for this position. (formal)

Milyen feladatokkal foglalkozott az előző munkahelyén?

What kinds of tasks did you handle in your previous job? (formal)

In Milyen számítógépes rendszereket ismer?, milyen asks for examples or types rather than selecting one item from a fixed list. The plural noun bears accusative marking, and this open-ended object takes indefinite ismer. Once Gábor names a particular system, A CargoSoftot jól ismerem has a definite object and definite conjugation.

Decision 3: work history is built from duration, role, and workplace cases

Gábor worked három évig, with -ig marking the full duration endpoint. His role is munkatársként, with essive-modal -ként “as,” and his workplace is egy cégnél, adessive “at a company.”

Három évig dolgoztam ügyfélszolgálati munkatársként egy szállítmányozási cégnél.

I worked as a customer-service representative at a freight-forwarding company for three years.

English uses for, as, and at; Hungarian does not replace them with one general preposition. Bare három év dolgoztam lacks the duration relation, while egy cégben dolgoztam pictures work inside a company/building and is not the neutral employment expression intended here.

Decision 4: verb government organizes professional responsibilities

Several interview verbs select stable case frames: jelentkezik valamire “applies for something,” pályázik valamire “applies/competes for something,” foglalkozik valamivel “deals with something,” egyeztet valakivel “coordinates with someone,” and felel valamiért “is responsible for something.”

Több felelősséget szeretnék vállalni, ezért pályáztam a koordinátori pozícióra.

I would like to take on more responsibility, so I applied for the coordinator position.

Ügyfelekkel egyeztettem, és én feleltem a késések bejelentéséért.

I coordinated with customers, and I was responsible for reporting delays.

The explicit én highlights Gábor’s particular responsibility within his old team. English learners must memorize these cases with the verbs. The English phrase apply for does not justify causal-final -ért after jelentkezik; Hungarian selects sublative -ra/-re.

Decision 5: tud expresses ability with an infinitive

Tud angolul telefonon tárgyalni? uses finite third-person tud plus infinitive tárgyalni. Angolul names the language used, and telefonon names the medium. No subject pronoun is necessary because the interviewer is visibly addressing Gábor.

Tud angolul telefonon tárgyalni?

Can you negotiate in English over the phone? (formal)

A CargoSoftot jól ismerem, az önök rendszerét viszont még nem használtam.

I know CargoSoft well, but I have not used your system yet.

Tud is ability or know-how; ismer is familiarity with a person, place, system, or identifiable thing. Gábor can say Ismerem a rendszert “I know the system” and Tudom használni a rendszert “I know how/can use the system.” English know covers both, so the distinction must be made in Hungarian.

The complete paradigms and further valency patterns appear in the reference entry for tud.

Decision 6: the conditional makes a hypothetical scenario

Andrea’s scenario is not asserted as real. Both the main question and the ha clause use conditional: Mit tenne, ha ... érkezne? Gábor maintains that frame with ellenőrizném, visszahívnám, and adnék.

Mit tenne, ha egyszerre két sürgős panasz érkezne?

What would you do if two urgent complaints arrived at the same time? (formal)

Először ellenőrizném az ügyeket, utána visszahívnám mindkét ügyfelet.

First I would check the cases; then I would call both customers back.

Definite az ügyeket and mindkét ügyfelet trigger ellenőrizném and visszahívnám; the indefinite object pontos határidőt triggers adnék. English would remains unchanged, but Hungarian conditional endings still encode object definiteness.

The same mood can soften availability rather than construct an unreal world: Mikor tudna kezdeni? – Tudnék kezdeni... is professionally less abrupt than plain present Mikor tud kezdeni?.

Jövő hónap elején tudnék kezdeni.

I could start at the beginning of next month.

Decision 7: the candidate’s questions continue the same formal system

Van kérdése...? contains possessed kérdése, literally “is there your question?” The postpositional phrase a munkakörrel kapcsolatban governs instrumental -rel. Gábor asks about the team with mekkora, referring to size, and uses a personal infinitive after kellene: dolgoznom “for me to work.”

Mekkora csapattal dolgoznék együtt, és milyen gyakran kellene hétvégén dolgoznom?

How large a team would I work with, and how often would I have to work at weekends?

Andrea answers Hatfős csapattal dolgozna, where hatfős means “consisting of six people.” Vállalnia is third-person personal infinitive because its understood experiencer is the formally addressed candidate.

The final institutional mi in Mi köszönjük corrects the direction of thanks: “we are the ones thanking you.” Értesítjük az eredményről uses elative -ról/-ről with the person-notification frame.

Mi köszönjük, hogy eljött. Péntekig értesítjük az eredményről.

Thank you for coming. We will notify you of the outcome by Friday. (formal)

💡
A strong interview answer is grammatically relational: say how long with -ig, in what role with -ként, at which employer with -nál/-nél, and what you dealt with using -val/-vel.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ön mikor tudnál munkába állni?

Incorrect agreement — ön requires third-person tudna, not second-person tudnál.

✅ Ön mikor tudna munkába állni a debreceni irodában?

When could you start work in the Debrecen office? (formal)

❌ Három év dolgoztam ügyfélszolgálaton.

Incorrect — a bounded duration requires -ig.

✅ Négy évig dolgoztam egy biztosító ügyfélszolgálatán.

I worked in an insurance company’s customer-service department for four years.

❌ Tavaly jelentkeztem ezt a vezetői állást.

Incorrect government — jelentkezik takes -ra/-re for the position.

✅ Tavaly jelentkeztem erre a csoportvezetői állásra.

Last year I applied for this team-leader position.

❌ Tud németül tárgyal ügyfelekkel?

Incorrect complementation — ability tud requires the infinitive tárgyalni.

✅ Tud németül tárgyalni külföldi ügyfelekkel?

Can you negotiate in German with international customers? (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Distanced ön address uses third-person verbs, imperatives, possessives, and personal infinitives.
  • Hungarian content questions need no English-style do: Mit tenne? Mivel foglalkozott?
  • Work history combines három évig, munkatársként, and egy cégnél.
  • Learn professional verbs with their cases: jelentkezik valamire, foglalkozik valamivel, felel valamiért.
  • Ability uses tud + infinitive; familiarity with a system uses ismer.
  • Conditional forms build hypothetical scenarios and politely discuss availability.
  • Object definiteness still controls conjugation inside conditional answers.
  • A coherent formal interview maintains its address relationship from greeting through leave-taking.
