tud: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Tud has two major jobs: “know” a fact, answer, or item of information, and “can/be able to” perform an infinitive. English uses two unrelated verbs; Hungarian uses one verb with different complements. Tud also has both object conjugations, a highly useful polite conditional, a personal-infinitive paradigm, and the prefixed change megtud “find out.”

The first-person past tudtam is identical in both paradigms. The object decides its analysis: tudtam egy megoldást “I knew a solution” is indefinite; tudtam a választ “I knew the answer” is definite.

Tudok egy csendes kávézót a pályaudvar mögött.

I know a quiet café behind the railway station.

Tudom a belépőkódot, de nem írhatom le üzenetben.

I know the access code, but I can’t write it in a message.

💡
A definite-looking idea is not enough: inspect the Hungarian complement. Egy megoldást selects tudok; a megoldást selects tudom; erről is not an object and also selects the indefinite paradigm.

Knowledge: objects, topics, and clauses

An accusative object represents the known item. A topic in -ról/-ről means “know about,” often without detailed knowledge.

Sokat tudunk erről a ritka madárfajról.

We know a lot about this rare bird species.

Nem tudom, hogy mikor indul az utolsó komp.

I don’t know when the last ferry leaves.

A finite content clause commonly appears with definite tudom/tudja, because it supplies the identifiable content of knowledge; an omitted azt “that” can be understood. By contrast, tud valakiről means know that the person exists or possess information about them. It does not imply personal acquaintance.

Tud also accompanies language adverbs:

A recepciós jól tud németül és lengyelül.

The receptionist speaks German and Polish well.

The languages are in -ul/-ül, not accusative objects. Ismeri a német nyelvet is possible but describes familiarity with the language as a system; it is not the ordinary way to state speaking ability.

Ability plus a plain infinitive

Finite tud + -ni expresses learned, physical, practical, or situational ability. The same subject controls both verbs.

A kisfiam már segítség nélkül tud úszni.

My little boy can already swim without help.

Innen nem tudom elolvasni az apró betűket.

I can’t read the small print from here.

The second sentence uses definite tudom because az apró betűket is the object of elolvasni, and Hungarian object definiteness is reflected on the finite verb. With an indefinite object, use indefinite agreement:

Tudsz ajánlani egy megbízható kerékpárszerelőt?

Can you recommend a reliable bicycle mechanic?

English inserts to after many verbs but not after can. Hungarian consistently uses the -ni infinitive after finite tud: tud úszni, never a bare dictionary stem and not a personal infinitive.

Personal infinitive: tudnom kell

When tudni itself depends on an impersonal modal such as kell, its logical subject can be marked on the infinitive. The endings are:

PersonPersonal infinitive
éntudnom
tetudnod
őtudnia
mitudnunk
titudnotok
őktudniuk

Nekem tudnom kell, ha megváltozik a műtét időpontja.

I need to know if the time of the operation changes.

Ezt nektek is tudnotok kell a jelentkezés előtt.

You all need to know this before applying.

The dative pronoun nekem/nektek may be omitted when context identifies the experiencer. Do not combine the two constructions: tudok úszni has finite tudok plus plain úszni; tudnom kell has impersonal kell plus personal tudnom. The personal-infinitive forms guide gives the complete architecture.

Polite conditional

Tudnál…? for familiar singular address and Tudna…? for polite singular address are conventional requests, not merely questions about capacity.

Tudnál segíteni felvinni ezt a dobozt?

Could you help me carry this box upstairs?

Tudna mondani egy hozzávetőleges árat?

Could you give me an approximate price?

The first is (informal); the second is (formal). A bare present Tud segíteni? can sound more directly like a question about availability or ability, though intonation and context can still make it a request.

Megtud: acquiring knowledge

Tud is a state: possess knowledge. Megtud is a bounded change: find out, learn a fact.

Holnap megtudjuk a pályázat eredményét.

Tomorrow we’ll find out the result of the application.

Negation, questions, and focus separate meg-:

A résztvevők nem tudták meg, miért maradt el az előadás.

The participants did not find out why the lecture was canceled.

Mikor tudtad meg, hogy felvettek az egyetemre?

When did you find out that you had been admitted to university?

Csak tegnap tudtam meg a költözés pontos dátumát.

I only found out the exact moving date yesterday.

The last two have preverbal focus; the prefix follows tudtad/tudtam. This is the same information-structure pattern described in the prefix-order guide.

💡
Keep state and acquisition distinct: tudom means the knowledge is available now; megtudom means I come to know it.

Common Mistakes

❌ Tudok a pontos címet.

Incorrect — a definite accusative object requires definite conjugation.

✅ Tudom a pontos címet, ezért odatalálunk térkép nélkül is.

I know the exact address, so we can get there without a map.

❌ A húgom tud úsznom.

Incorrect — finite tud controls a plain infinitive with the same subject.

✅ A húgom már tud kétszáz métert úszni megállás nélkül.

My younger sister can already swim two hundred meters without stopping.

❌ Nekem tudniom kell az új jelszót.

Incorrect — the personal infinitive is built on tudn-, without infinitive i.

✅ Nekem tudnom kell az új jelszót a reggeli műszak előtt.

I need to know the new password before the morning shift.

❌ Tegnap nem megtudtam a vizsga eredményét.

Incorrect — neutral negation separates the prefix.

✅ Tegnap még nem tudtam meg a vizsga eredményét.

I still did not find out my exam result yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Tud valamit expresses knowledge; tud + infinitive expresses ability.
  • Object definiteness selects tudok/tudom even when the object belongs semantically to the dependent infinitive.
  • Tudok úszni uses a plain infinitive; tudnom kell uses a personal infinitive under an impersonal modal.
  • Tudnál…? and Tudna…? are conventional informal and formal requests.
  • Megtud means acquire information, and meg- separates under negation or focus.
