Grammar decisions behind the explanation
1. The definition uses olyan… amely
Olyan jelenség, amelynek következtében… first assigns the phenomenon to a class and then specifies its defining consequence. Amelynek carries dative because it belongs to the postpositional expression valaminek a következtében. English places “of which” elsewhere; Hungarian case appears on the relative pronoun.
2. Participles compress repeated relative clauses
Fákkal szegélyezett, elnyelő, tárolt, végzett, and gondozott package processes as noun modifiers. They do not agree in number or case with the noun. The active elnyelő aszfalt absorbs; passive-result tárolt hő has been stored. See participle usage.
3. Verbal prefixes mark event structure
Felmelegszik presents becoming warm; leadja presents releasing the stored heat; kimutattak presents an achieved detection. In the negative nem bizonyítja, there is no prefix to move, but focused measurements could separate one: öt fokot mutattak ki.
4. Cause and result use distinct connectors
Ezért introduces a result inferred from the energy requirement. Mivel introduces the reason for limiting the claim. Amelynek következtében embeds a causal consequence inside the definition. Treating all three as interchangeable “because” would reverse relations.
5. Nominalization creates technical concepts
Párolgás, elhelyezkedés, ültetés, alkalmazkodás turn events into nouns. Their participants then appear in possessive or case-marked structures: a fák ültetése, a hőhullámokhoz való alkalmazkodás. The latter uses való to turn a case-marked complement into a noun modifier.
6. Evidence is attributed and bounded
Egy … mérés során identifies one study-like observation without pretending to establish a universal law. A kutatók szerint attributes the interpretation. Akár … is marks an upper noteworthy value, not an average.
7. The limitation separates evidence from proof
Nem bizonyítja, hogy minden… explicitly blocks overgeneralization. Bizonyítja is third-person singular because its subject is az eredmény, and it takes definite conjugation because the following hogy-clause functions as its object; minden fasor inside that clause remains singular after minden.
8. The conclusion uses corrective classification
Nem pusztán X, hanem Y does not deny the aesthetic dimension. It rejects “merely aesthetic” and adds adaptation as the more consequential classification. Prosodic stress falls on pusztán and the replacement phrase.
Diagnosing an English-shaped scientific sentence
A learner may write A fák ültetés segít alkalmazkodni a hőhullámoktól. The nominalization lacks its possessive marker, and alkalmazkodik selects -hoz/-hez/-höz, not ablative -tól/-től.
❌ A fák ültetés segít alkalmazkodni a hőhullámoktól.
Incorrect — the nominalized phrase is incomplete and alkalmazkodik selects the wrong case.
✅ A fák ültetése segíti a hőhullámokhoz való alkalmazkodást.
Planting trees supports adaptation to heat waves.
The corrected version also uses definite segíti with definite object az alkalmazkodást. Hungarian technical prose makes participant structure visible in both noun and verb morphology.
Common Mistakes
❌ A városi hősziget egy jelenség, ami következtében melegebb van.
Incorrect — the relative pronoun needs dative marking (formal amelynek here), and the result clause needs a clear subject.
✅ A városi hősziget olyan jelenség, amelynek következtében a belváros melegebb lehet.
An urban heat island is a phenomenon as a result of which the city center may be warmer.
❌ A napsugárzás elnyelő beton felmelegszik.
Incorrect — napsugárzás must be the participle’s accusative object.
✅ A napsugárzást elnyelő beton gyorsan felmelegszik.

Incorrect — the object clause and definite conjugation are missing.
