Past and Prospective Participles: Meanings and Usage

Hungarian -t/-tt and -andó/-endő participles compress different viewpoints on an event. The first commonly identifies something through an earlier change or present result; the second identifies something as a target of intention, necessity, or evaluation. The contrast is therefore not simply English “past” versus “future.” For the stem patterns, see the forms page; this page concentrates on what speakers accomplish with the forms.

Identifying something through a completed event

An -t/-tt modifier can distinguish a person or thing by what happened to it. With transitive verbs the head noun often corresponds to the affected object.

A lezárt borítékot tedd a kék mappába.

Put the sealed envelope in the blue folder.

Visszaolvastam a tegnap elküldött üzenetet, és találtam benne egy hibát.

I reread the message sent yesterday and found an error in it.

Lezárt presents the envelope after sealing; elküldött identifies the message through an earlier sending event. A time phrase can specify the event, but the participle itself is non-finite and has no absolute past tense. From a future viewpoint, a holnapra elkészített vacsora can mean “the dinner prepared for tomorrow.”

With change-of-state and motion verbs, the head noun may correspond to the finite subject rather than an object:

A kihűlt kávét inkább nem ittam meg.

I decided not to drink the coffee that had gone cold.

A későn érkezett vendégeknek is maradt vacsora.

There was still dinner left for the guests who arrived late.

These are not passive readings. The coffee cooled and the guests arrived. The traditional “past participle” label covers a relative-time and result pattern, not one fixed voice relation.

💡
Ask what participant the head noun represents. In a lezárt boríték, somebody sealed the envelope; in a kihűlt kávé, the coffee itself became cold.

Result description versus established adjective

Frequent participles often develop stable adjective meanings. Nyitott can describe an open door as a result, but nyitott ember means an open-minded person. Ismert means “known,” elismert “recognized/respected,” and fáradt “tired.” Their complements and collocations may no longer mirror a freshly created verb phrase.

Kata nyitott ember, ezért könnyű vele őszintén beszélni.

Kata is open-minded, so it’s easy to speak honestly with her.

The sentence does not mean that someone physically opened Kata. Lexical meaning wins over mechanical segmentation. Such words can also be predicative like ordinary adjectives: Kata nyitott. By contrast, a long eventive participial phrase is normally attributive before its noun.

Marking an action as necessary or intended

The prospective participle presents its head noun as a target of a later action. Administrative instructions use it to classify fields, documents, payments, and tasks.

A csillaggal jelölt mezők kötelezően kitöltendők.

The fields marked with an asterisk must be completed.

A pályázathoz csatolandó dokumentumok listája a második oldalon található.

The list of documents to be attached to the application is on the second page.

This use is (formal). In everyday conversation, a finite expression with kell is usually lighter: Ezeket a mezőket ki kell tölteni “These fields have to be completed.” The participle packages obligation inside the noun phrase, making it useful for headings, checklists, and regulations.

Intention rather than external obligation can also be central:

A kiállításon bemutatandó képeket már becsomagoltuk.

We have already packed the pictures to be shown at the exhibition.

Here the pictures are selected for a planned presentation. The suffix does not guarantee that the presentation will actually occur; it encodes their intended role.

Evaluation: worth doing, to be avoided, to be followed

Several prospective forms are conventional evaluative words. Megfontolandó means “worth considering,” kerülendő “to be avoided,” and követendő “to be followed; exemplary.” They often sound (formal) or (academic) but are not archaic.

Ez megfontolandó javaslat, de előbb látnunk kell a költségeket.

This is a proposal worth considering, but first we need to see the costs.

A személyeskedő hangnem szakmai vitában kerülendő.

A personal, attacking tone should be avoided in professional debate.

In the second sentence, kerülendő behaves as a conventional adjective-like predicate. Productive participles are basically attributive; frequent forms can lexicalize and gain wider adjective behavior. That boundary must be learned from usage rather than from the suffix alone.

💡
-andó/-endő usually contributes modality, not mere clock time. “Scheduled to happen” with an active subject often uses -ó/-ő: a holnap induló járat “the service leaving tomorrow.”

Arguments survive inside the modifier

Both participle types can retain the verb’s dependents, so the noun phrase still encodes participant relations. Hungarian puts those dependents before the participle and head noun.

A bizottság által tegnap elfogadott módosítást ma teszik közzé.

The amendment adopted by the committee yesterday will be published today.

A hallgatók által péntekig elolvasandó tanulmány húszoldalas.

The paper to be read by the students by Friday is twenty pages long.

A bizottság által and a hallgatók által identify agents, while tegnap locates the completed event and péntekig gives the required deadline. Agent phrases with által are especially at home in (formal) and (academic) prose. Conversation usually prefers a relative clause: az a tanulmány, amelyet a hallgatóknak péntekig el kell olvasniuk.

Personal infinitives display the performer through possessive-like endings such as elolvasniuk. Adjectival participles do not have those person endings, but they preserve the same participant network through cases and complements. This is why they remain verb-like inside an adjective-like phrase.

Genre and lexical restrictions

Prospective participles are especially useful when a document must classify several items compactly. In a checklist, benyújtandó iratok “documents to be submitted,” befizetendő összeg “amount payable,” and elvégzendő feladatok “tasks to be completed” turn whole obligations into labels. Research writing uses the same resource to announce a target of analysis.

A következő fejezetben megvizsgálandó kérdés az adatok megbízhatósága.

The question to be examined in the next chapter is the reliability of the data.

This is natural (academic) prose because the question is explicitly placed on the writer’s agenda. In ordinary conversation, A következő fejezetben az adatok megbízhatóságát vizsgáljuk meg “In the next chapter, we examine the reliability of the data” is more direct.

The productive pattern is strongest when a controllable transitive action has an affected target. Natural events and active participants usually need another form. A storm expected tomorrow is a holnap várható vihar, not automatically a newly coined -andó/-endő form. Speakers differ on some marginal formations, so dictionary evidence and established usage matter.

A hét végéig elvégzendő feladatokat három csoportra osztottuk.

We divided the tasks to be completed by the end of the week into three groups.

Past participles are less restricted but can also become opaque lexical adjectives. With nyitott, fáradt, or tanult, interpret the established adjective before trying to reconstruct a single completed event.

A short office dialogue

– Melyik iratokat kell elküldenem? – A kitöltött űrlapot és a befizetést igazoló bizonylatot. A még kitöltendő mezőket sárgával jelöltük.

‘Which documents do I need to send?’ ‘The completed form and the receipt confirming payment. We marked the fields still to be completed in yellow.’

Kitöltött describes the form after completion. Igazoló is an active present participle because the receipt provides confirmation. Kitöltendő identifies unfinished fields as targets of a required future action. One exchange therefore shows that suffix choice tracks event viewpoint and participant role, not English tense mechanically.

Formal compression versus everyday clauses

Compressed formEveryday paraphraseMeaning
a benyújtandó kérelem **(formal)**a kérelem, amelyet be kell nyújtanithe application that must be submitted
a tegnap benyújtott kérelema kérelem, amelyet tegnap nyújtottak bethe application submitted yesterday
a megfontolandó szempontok **(formal)**azok a szempontok, amelyeket érdemes átgondolnipoints worth considering

Formal compression can be precise, but several heavy dependents before the head noun burden listeners. In ordinary speech, the relative-clause column is often more natural.

Common Mistakes

❌ A tegnap elfogadni javaslatot ma közzétették.

Incorrect: the infinitive cannot directly modify javaslat in this completed-event structure.

✅ A tegnap elfogadott javaslatot ma közzétették.

The proposal adopted yesterday was published today.

❌ A vonat holnap van indulandó.

Incorrect: -andó/-endő does not build a finite future with van.

✅ A vonat holnap indul.

The train leaves tomorrow.

❌ A diákok péntekig olvasandó a tanulmányt.

Incorrect: the participle cannot replace the finite predicate in this sentence frame.

✅ A diákoknak péntekig el kell olvasniuk a tanulmányt.

The students have to read the paper by Friday.

❌ A bizottság tegnap által elfogadott döntés fontos.

Incorrect: the agent and által form one unit before the other modifiers.

✅ A bizottság által tegnap elfogadott döntés fontos.

The decision adopted by the committee yesterday is important.

Key Takeaways

  • -t/-tt identifies entities through a prior event, resulting state, or lexicalized property.
  • The head can correspond to a transitive object or to the subject of a change or motion event.
  • -andó/-endő expresses necessity, intention, purpose, or evaluation more often than simple futurity.
  • Retained arguments make participial modifiers verb-like, even though the form has no person or tense inflection.
  • Long prospective phrases are useful in formal prose; finite relative clauses are often clearer in conversation.
