C2 Learner Path

C2 is not a final collection of exotic paradigms. It is the point at which you can recognize historically or regionally marked Hungarian, choose among several grammatical ways of packaging the same message, and defend a revision in terms of audience, genre, evidence, and information structure. This page is therefore a route through existing lessons, not a compressed explanation of their contents.

The route assumes successful completion of the C1 learner path. Before starting, you should already control vowel harmony and suffix order in unfamiliar words; the productive case system; definite and indefinite conjugation; verbal prefixes under focus, negation, and commands; personal infinitives and participles; relative and subordinate clauses; and topic–focus organization. You should also be able to write 500 fully accented words without systematically losing á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű or breaking multigraphs such as gy, ny, sz, zs, and dzs.

The eight blocks below are sized for one demanding week each: four focused sessions plus delayed retrieval. Extend a block when its milestone is not stable. C2 accuracy comes from revisiting the same choices in richer contexts.

Entry diagnostic: test integration, not recognition

Complete four tasks without notes. Modernize the historical sentence and label the older verb form. Give a standard equivalent of the regionally marked sentence without calling the original “bad Hungarian.” Revise the academic sentence for a general newspaper audience. Finally, read all three aloud, preserving vowel and consonant length.

Then record a two-minute response to the question Miért nem ugyanazt jelenti a két mondat? “Why do the two sentences not mean the same thing?”

You are ready if you can explain the historical and regional labels, produce an idiomatic revision rather than a word-for-word translation, and account for javította ki versus kijavította. One unexplained accent error is a warning; a repeated loss of ő/ű, random case choice, or uncertainty about the definite ending -ta means that the relevant C1 prerequisite needs repair first.

Week 1: recognize historical grammar without imitating it

Begin with verb forms across registers, then study their contrasts. Continue with the historical background in language contact and history, and finish with the nineteenth-century literary passage.

Your aim is receptive control. Learn to identify narrative past forms such as monda or indula, anterior constructions such as elment vala, and elevated lőn as (archaic) or (literary). Do not insert them into otherwise contemporary prose merely to sound advanced. For each older sentence, mark the finite verb, supply a modern equivalent, and state what temporal relation the modern version must make explicit through context or an adverb.

Milestone 1

Annotate a 250-word historical passage. Modernize it twice: once closely, preserving clause structure, and once for a present-day general reader. Read the original and both rewrites aloud. Your pronunciation may be contemporary, but every written historical form must remain exactly as found in the source.

Week 2: deepen dialect comprehension through sound

Study the dialect overview before its usage guide. Then move through Hungarian beyond Hungary and the Csángó and urban-contact contrasts. End with the annotated regionally marked dialogue.

Work from recordings whenever possible. On a first listen, transcribe what you hear without normalizing it. On a second, label only features you can locate geographically or socially from the lesson. On a third, write a standard equivalent and note what identity or conversational stance the normalization removes. Dialect is not a failed attempt at the standard; it is a structured variety with its own patterns. Your active production should remain within forms you have actually heard from a community, not a collage assembled from a feature list.

Listening and pronunciation milestone

Submit a sixty-second transcription from one labeled regional source, a standard-Hungarian rendering, and an audio imitation. Preserve the speaker’s vowel length and rhythm without caricature. In your commentary, distinguish what you heard from what you inferred.

Retrieval checkpoint 1: historical form versus living variation

After two days without the pages, sort twenty forms into four categories: contemporary standard, contemporary regional, historical/literary, and insufficient context. Give a modern standard paraphrase where appropriate, but do not “correct” a quoted speaker or silently modernize an archival source. Revisit Week 1 if you confuse vala with a productive modern auxiliary; revisit Week 2 if your labels depend on stereotypes rather than attested features.

Week 3: repair English-shaped Hungarian

Study the three pages on recasting English structure, especially the translation contrasts. Then revisit choosing a clause pattern and the reference-error diagnostics.

Repair in two passes. In the first, recover grammatical dependencies: cases, agreement, object definiteness, and prefix position. In the second, ask what is already topical and what the sentence selects as new or contrastive. English subject-first order and passive voice often conceal that second decision. A grammatically possible Hungarian clause may still mispackage the answer.

Controlled contrast drill

For ten English sentences, produce two Hungarian versions with one controlled difference: neutral versus focused order, indefinite versus definite object, complete event versus negated event, or explicit agent versus backgrounded agent. State what context licenses each version. Do not award yourself credit for two word orders if you cannot describe the change in focus and prefix placement.

Week 4: gain deliberate stylistic control

Now combine grammar with genre. Review official and academic usage, journalistic and literary usage, reformulation markers, and spoken versus academic discourse.

Transform one proposition across three registers. A conversational version can name speakers and use particles; a news report should attribute information precisely; an academic version may use denser nominal structure where it serves a real analytical purpose. Formality is not achieved by maximizing noun length, and informality is not achieved by deleting random words.

Milestone 4

Write a 180-word explanation for a friend, a 180-word news brief, and a 180-word academic abstract about the same evidence. Highlight five places where a grammatical choice changes with register. Record the conversational version and the news version; your delivery should change without distorting Hungarian stress or vowel length.

Week 5: read archival and institutionally dense texts

Apply the previous four weeks to a dated source. Prepare with the public notice, the contract clause, the academic abstract, and the historical literary passage from Week 1. Then select a short, legally accessible archival scan or diplomatic transcription whose date and provenance you can document.

Keep three layers separate: the source as printed, a diplomatic transcription, and a modern paraphrase. Do not silently fix historical spelling, uncertain characters, or scanning errors. Bracket the main clause before unpacking nested possession, participles, postpositions, and scope. If the document uses an older form, label its period and register before deciding whether it belongs in the modern paraphrase.

Milestone 5

Submit a 300-word annotated extract with provenance, a fully accented modern paraphrase, and six notes: one on orthography, one on a verb form, one on case or postposition government, one on information structure, one on register, and one genuine uncertainty. Honest uncertainty supported by visible evidence is better than an invented certainty.

Retrieval checkpoint 2: revise without the English scaffold

Put away the English original. After forty-eight hours, reconstruct the meaning of your Week 3 and Week 4 Hungarian texts from an outline, not from sentence-by-sentence prompts. Audit all five columns from the entry diagnostic. Then compare your version with the earlier one and justify three revisions.

This sentence integrates a definite object (három korpuszt remains grammatically indefinite for conjugation), an explicitly definite plural object in the second clause (az eltéréseket → magyarázták), prefix placement after azonban nem minden esetben, and contrastive discourse structure. C2 practice should make those decisions interact.

Week 6: transform genres without losing content

Choose one event represented in an interview, report, formal notice, and literary scene. Use the interview, the news report, the formal email, and the modern literary passage as models.

Write four versions that preserve the core facts while changing viewpoint, evidence marking, participant reference, and rhythm. Then back-translate each version literally enough to expose its Hungarian structure. The exercise is successful when the four Hungarian texts are recognizably different genres without contradicting one another.

Week 7: edit another writer and defend alternatives

Exchange an anonymous 400-word text with an advanced learner or work from an older draft of your own. Produce three layers: necessary corrections, idiomatic improvements, and optional stylistic alternatives. Do not present the third layer as grammar law. For every correction, cite the relevant guide page; for every optional revision, describe the audience and effect.

Your oral task is a five-minute editorial conference in Hungarian. Explain why a case, conjugation, or prefix change is necessary, then why a different word order is preferable but not obligatory. This distinction between grammaticality and editorial choice is central to C2 judgment.

Week 8: final synthesis portfolio

Build a portfolio around one topic with four components:

1. a 700-word argumentative or analytical text for a named audience;
2. a 250-word register transformation of part of that text;
3. a three-minute response to a regional or historical recording, including a transcription excerpt;
4. a commentary that defends ten choices across the five diagnostic columns.

The spoken defense must be delivered without reading a script. The written work must be fully accented from first draft to final submission. Include one controlled contrast where both Hungarian versions are grammatical but answer different questions, and one passage where you reject an English-shaped structure.

Pass when an expert reader can recover your intended focus, reference, evidence source, and register without relying on the English version; when your spoken production preserves meaningful length contrasts; and when no repeated pattern remains in accentuation, harmony, case selection, object definiteness, or prefix placement. One repaired slip is normal. A repeated unexplained pattern sends the relevant component back to retrieval, not the whole course back to Week 1.
