Hungarian adjectives normally precede their noun, but several modifiers do not form a random list. A broad evaluative judgment tends to come first, ordinary descriptive properties occupy the middle, and a classifying or relational adjective stands closest to the noun: egy kiváló új budapesti étterem “an excellent new Budapest restaurant.” This is a default hierarchy, not an unbreakable mechanical rule; a speaker can reorder modifiers to change scope or contrast.
Relational adjectives in -i are especially common next to the noun. They express association, origin, time, or institutional domain: budapesti lakás, nyári szünet, egyetemi könyvtár. This page gives their form and default position. The usage page develops contextual choices, while the contrast page handles marked orders and spelling boundaries.
The default modifier hierarchy
Hungarian has no single compulsory slot for every semantic class, but this sequence is a dependable neutral starting point:
| Farther from noun | Typical meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| evaluative | speaker judgment | remek, furcsa, gyönyörű |
| descriptive | age, size, shape, color, condition | új, nagy, kerek, piros |
| classifying | subtype or function | digitális, pénzügyi, orvosi |
| relational | origin, place, time, institution | budapesti, nyári, egyetemi |
| noun | head of the phrase | étterem, program, könyvtár |
Találtunk egy hangulatos kis balatoni vendégházat.
We found a charming little guesthouse near Lake Balaton.
Ez egy megbízható új digitális fizetési rendszer.
This is a reliable new digital payment system.
A kiállításon gyönyörű régi erdélyi bútorokat láttunk.
At the exhibition we saw beautiful old Transylvanian furniture.
Hangulatos/gyönyörű evaluate, kis/régi describe, and balatoni/erdélyi classify by geographical association. The closest modifiers help define what kind of guesthouse or furniture is meant; the outer adjective comments on that whole category.
Attributive adjectives remain invariant
Every ordinary adjective in a prenominal stack stays bare. Number and case appear only on the head noun.
Két tágas, világos budapesti lakást néztünk meg.
We viewed two spacious, bright apartments in Budapest.
The adjectives tágas, világos, budapesti carry neither plural nor accusative marking. The numeral két keeps the noun singular, and accusative -t appears on lakást. Without the numeral, plural and accusative still remain on the noun: tágas budapesti lakásokat.
Predicative structure is different. A plural-marked subject takes plural adjective agreement:
A lakások világosak, és mindegyik budapesti.
The apartments are bright, and each one is in Budapest.
Here világosak is a predicate of plural lakások and receives -ak. Budapesti remains singular only because its immediate subject mindegyik “each one” is grammatically singular. Compare A vendégek budapestiek “The guests are from Budapest,” with plural predicate budapestiek.
Forming relational adjectives with -i
Productive -i attaches to many common nouns and place names. It does not have harmonic front/back variants.
| Base | Derived adjective | Core relation |
|---|---|---|
| város | városi | urban / of the city |
| egyetem | egyetemi | university / of a university |
| nyár | nyári | summer |
| hét | heti | weekly / per week |
| Budapest | budapesti | of/from/in Budapest |
| Magyarország | magyarországi | of/from/in Hungary |
| Európa | európai | European |
The form is often transparent—nyár → nyári simply retains long á—but not every surface shape is “base + visible i” without adjustment. Hét → heti shortens the stem vowel, while falu → falusi contains the established relational form -si. These common stem shapes must be learned; productivity does not eliminate lexical history.
A nyári egyetemi programra külföldi hallgatók is jelentkeztek.
International students also applied to the summer university program.
A városi közlekedési tervet ősszel mutatják be.
The urban transport plan will be presented in the autumn.
Relational -i usually classifies instead of describing a gradable quality. Egyetemi könyvtár names a type or institutional affiliation; it does not normally mean a library that is “more university-like” to some measurable degree.
Capitalization after place names
When -i derives a common adjective from a one-word proper place name, the resulting adjective begins with lowercase: Budapest → budapesti, Debrecen → debreceni, Magyarország → magyarországi, Európa → európai.
A debreceni konferencia résztvevői pénteken érkeznek.
The participants in the Debrecen conference arrive on Friday.
Több európai kutatóintézet csatlakozott a projekthez.
Several European research institutes joined the project.
This lowercase is an orthographic consequence of adjective formation, not disrespect toward the place. Multiword and hyphenated proper names require more detailed spelling rules and may preserve capitals and take a hyphen: New York-i. Do not lowercase every element of a complex official name by intuition; consult a current spelling source when the exact name matters.
Relational adjectives stay close to the noun
Because a relational adjective narrows the noun into a subtype, it tends to stand inside an ordinary descriptive adjective:
Egy új magyarországi gyárban kapott munkát.
He/she got a job at a new factory in Hungary.
Magyarországi gyár first creates the geographically defined category; új describes the resulting factory. Reversing the order to egy magyarországi új gyár is possible only with a marked contrast in which “new factory” is itself treated as a category. Neutral prose prefers új magyarországi gyár.
Several relational adjectives can nest by scope: budapesti egyetemi könyvtár naturally means a university library in Budapest. Egyetemi budapesti könyvtár instead attempts to classify an already established Budapest library as university-related and needs a special contrast to sound natural.
Adjective phrase or compound?
Not every word before a noun is a syntactically independent adjective. Hungarian compounds are written as one word and can express a conventional category: gyorsvonat “express train,” hálózsák “sleeping bag,” hidegfront “cold front.” A freely descriptive adjective remains separate: gyors vonat “a fast train,” hideg szoba “a cold room.”
A gyorsvonat ma lassabban halad a hó miatt.
The express train is traveling more slowly today because of the snow.
Egy gyors vonattal még elérjük a csatlakozást.
With a fast train, we'll still make the connection.
The difference is lexical as well as semantic. One-word spelling should not be invented merely because two words frequently occur together. Conversely, a dictionary compound should not be separated just because English writes two words.
Segmentation exercise
Identify order, derivation, and the location of inflection.
- egy remek új budapesti étterem → evaluation + age/state + relation + noun.
- csendes falusi utcákban → csendes + falu-si + utca-k-ban; only the noun carries plural and case.
- magyarországi → Magyarország + -i, with lowercase initial in the derived adjective.
- nyári programokat → nyár-i + program-ok-at; the established stem is nyár-, and inflection remains on the noun.
- budapestiek → Budapest-i-ek, with lowercase derived base and plural predicate/substantive ending.
- gyorsvonattal → gyorsvonat-tal; this is a compound, and instrumental -val assimilates to final t.
Common Mistakes
❌ Hangulatosak balatoni falvakat látogattunk meg.
Incorrect — attributive adjectives do not take plural marking.
✅ Hangulatos balatoni falvakat látogattunk meg.
We visited charming villages near Lake Balaton.
❌ A budapesti éttermek hangulatos.
Incorrect — the plural predicative adjective must agree with éttermek.
✅ A budapesti éttermek hangulatosak.
The Budapest restaurants are atmospheric.
❌ Egy Budapesti lakásban élnek.
Incorrect capitalization in ordinary running text — the derived place adjective is lowercase.
✅ Egy budapesti lakásban élnek.
They live in an apartment in Budapest.
❌ A mentő autó gyorsan áthaladt a kereszteződésen.
Wrong if ambulance is intended — the lexical category is the compound mentőautó.
✅ A mentőautó gyorsan áthaladt a kereszteződésen.
The ambulance passed quickly through the intersection.
❌ Az iroda több modern lett.
Incorrect — English more + adjective is not copied into Hungarian degree comparison.
✅ Az iroda modernebb lett.
The office became more modern.
Key Takeaways
- Neutral order tends to place evaluation outside description and classifying or relational material closest to the noun.
- Adjective order is scope-sensitive, not an absolute memorized English sequence.
- Every prenominal adjective remains invariant; plural and case appear on the noun.
- Predicative adjectives agree with plural-marked subjects: budapesti vendégek, but A vendégek budapestiek.
- Productive -i forms relational adjectives; some bases have established stem alternations such as nyári, heti, and falusi.
- Simple place-name derivatives are lowercase: budapesti, magyarországi, európai.
- Spelling separates free adjective phrases such as gyors vonat from lexical compounds such as gyorsvonat.
