Adjective Order and Relational -i Adjectives: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Hungarian adjective order is flexible but not indifferent. Egy érdekes új magyar regény naturally groups magyar regény as a class, describes it as new, and evaluates it as interesting. A different order can be grammatical if the context establishes different groupings, but it is not a free stylistic shuffle. Relational -i adjectives intensify this issue because they tend to classify the noun and therefore stand close to it.

This page provides decisions for boundary cases. Review the core hierarchy and derivation on the forms page, and broader discourse contexts on the usage page.

Neutral order versus contrastive regrouping

A neutral noun phrase usually moves from loose evaluation through physical description to a tight classifying relation.

Egy remek új budapesti kávézó nyílt a sarkon.

An excellent new café has opened on the corner in Budapest.

The underlying groups are roughly [remek [új [budapesti kávézó]]]. If the conversation has already divided cafés into new and old ones, another modifier can classify the “new café” group:

A budapesti új kávézók közül ezt szeretem a legjobban.

Of the new cafés in Budapest, I like this one best.

This marked order is licensed by közül and an established comparison set. It does not prove that every order is equally neutral.

Matched pair:

Érdekes kortárs magyar verseket olvastunk.

We read interesting contemporary Hungarian poems.

A magyar kortárs versek közül ezek jelentek meg angolul.

Among contemporary Hungarian poems, these were published in English.

The second uses magyar to delimit a set already categorized as kortárs versek. Information structure motivates the outer relational modifier.

💡
Before rejecting an unusual order, ask whether the discourse has already turned the inner adjective-plus-noun sequence into a named set. If not, return the relational/classifying adjective to the noun-adjacent position.

Relational versus qualitative adjectives

Pure relational adjectives assign membership or association rather than a measurable property. Budapesti iroda is an office in or associated with Budapest; it is not inherently “Budapest-like.” Qualitative városias means “urban in character” and can be graded more naturally.

A cég budapesti irodája tavaly költözött új helyre.

The company's Budapest office moved to a new location last year.

A környék egyre városiasabb, de még mindig csendes.

The area is becoming increasingly urban, but it is still quiet.

Creative budapestibb is possible in commentary when it means “more characteristically Budapest-like,” but that is a coerced qualitative reading. It cannot mean “more geographically located in Budapest.” Formal factual prose should choose a precise adjective such as központibb, városiasabb, or inkább budapesti jellegű, depending on the claim.

Another important contrast is magyar versus magyarországi:

A fesztivál magyar és szlovák írókat hívott meg.

The festival invited Hungarian and Slovak writers. (linguistic/cultural or national classification)

A felmérés magyarországi írók munkakörülményeit vizsgálja.

The survey examines the working conditions of writers based in Hungary.

Magyarországi explicitly anchors the relation to Hungary as a place and can include writers of different ethnic or linguistic identities. Magyar can classify by language, culture, ethnicity, or nationality; context decides.

Lowercase derivative versus preserved proper name

A one-word place name loses its initial capital when -i forms a common adjective: Budapest → budapesti, Sopron → soproni, Európa → európai.

A soproni pályaudvart nemrég felújították.

Sopron railway station was recently renovated.

At the start of a sentence, ordinary sentence capitalization still applies:

Soproni barátaink érkeznek ma este.

Our friends from Sopron are arriving this evening.

The lexical form remains soproni; its capital here does not turn it back into a proper name. Complex foreign place names may preserve their capitals and attach -i with a hyphen: New York-i. Do not extrapolate the lowercase rule mechanically to every multiword official name.

Relational adjective versus possessive phrase

An -i adjective classifies by association; a possessive phrase identifies an entity’s part, possession, or role. They may describe similar situations but package different information.

Egy budapesti egyetemen tanul.

He/she studies at a university in Budapest.

Budapest egyik egyetemén tanul.

He/she studies at one of Budapest's universities.

The first does not identify which institution; budapesti simply restricts location. The second uses possession and egyik to select from the city’s universities.

Likewise, egyetemi könyvtár names a university-library type, while az egyetem könyvtára identifies the library of a particular university.

Az egyetemi könyvtár este tízig nyitva tart.

The university library stays open until ten in the evening.

Az egyetem könyvtárát nyáron felújítják.

The university's library will be renovated in the summer.

Free adjective phrase versus compound

Writing together can create a lexical category. The classic minimal pair is magyar tanár versus magyartanár.

A magyar tanár franciát tanít Lyonban.

The Hungarian teacher teaches French in Lyon.

A magyartanár ma röpdolgozatot íratott.

The Hungarian-language teacher gave a pop quiz today.

Separate magyar classifies the teacher; compound magyartanár names the subject taught. Similarly, gyors vonat is any fast-moving train, while gyorsvonat is an established train category.

A gyors vonat a következő állomáson is megállt.

The fast train also stopped at the next station.

A gyorsvonat csak a nagyobb városokban áll meg.

The express train stops only in the larger towns.

Compound status is lexical and orthographic. Meaning can help, but learners must check established forms; English spacing is not evidence for Hungarian spacing.

💡
Test whether the first element freely describes this particular referent or helps name a conventional subtype. Free description favors two words; lexical category may require a compound, which a current dictionary should confirm.

Attributive invariability versus predicative agreement

Moving an adjective across the noun boundary changes its inflection.

Olcsó vidéki házakat keresnek.

They are looking for inexpensive country houses.

A vidéki házak olcsók.

The country houses are inexpensive.

Attributive olcsó and vidéki remain invariant before plural accusative házakat. Predicative olcsók takes plural -k with plural subject házak. If vidéki itself is predicative, it also pluralizes: A házak vidékiek “The houses are in the countryside / provincial.”

English speakers may overcorrect because English adjectives never agree. Hungarian does not mark all adjectives; it marks the adjective when it functions as a plural predicate or noun substitute.

Comparison syntax versus modifier order

English “more” can express degree or quantity. Hungarian distinguishes adjective comparative -bb from quantifier több.

Tágasabb budapesti lakást keresünk.

We are looking for a more spacious apartment in Budapest.

Több tágas budapesti lakást néztünk meg.

We viewed a larger number of spacious apartments in Budapest.

Tágasabb raises the degree of spaciousness. Több counts apartments and is followed by a singular noun, although the object ending on lakást remains visible. Copying English word order with több tágas changes the meaning rather than forming a comparative.

Decision tree

  1. Does a modifier name origin, place, time, institution, or subject domain?
    • Treat it as relational and place it close to the noun in neutral order.
  2. Does another adjective evaluate or physically describe that category?
    • Place it farther from the noun.
  3. Is a different order supported by an established contrast set?
    • Keep the marked order if it expresses the intended grouping; otherwise restore neutral scope.
  4. Is a place name one word?
    • Form a lowercase -i adjective; sentence-initial capitalization remains possible.
  5. Does the expression name a conventional lexical subtype?
    • Verify whether it is a compound; do not decide from English spacing.
  6. Is the adjective before a noun or predicative?
    • Before a noun, leave it invariant. With a plural-marked subject as predicate, add plural marking.
  7. Does English “more” mean degree or number?
    • Use -bb for degree and több for number.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the best form and explain the decision.

  1. Neutral “an excellent new university library”: egy kiváló új egyetemi könyvtár or egy egyetemi kiváló új könyvtár?
    • Egy kiváló új egyetemi könyvtár. Relational egyetemi classifies the noun; új describes and kiváló evaluates that category.
  2. “Researchers from Debrecen” in mid-sentence: Debreceni kutatók or debreceni kutatók?
    • Debreceni only at sentence start; otherwise lexical lowercase debreceni kutatók.
  3. “A teacher of German”: német tanár or némettanár?
    • Némettanár for the school-subject profession. Separate német tanár means a German teacher by identity/origin.
  4. “The rural houses are large”: A vidéki házak nagy or nagyok?
    • Nagyok. Vidéki is attributive and invariant; predicative nagyok agrees with plural házak.
  5. “A more modern office”: több modern iroda or modernebb iroda?
    • Modernebb iroda. Több modern iroda means a greater number of modern offices.

Common Mistakes

❌ Egy érdekes pécsi új kiállítást láttunk.

Awkward without a special set contrast — relational pécsi should normally stand closest to kiállítás.

✅ Egy érdekes új pécsi kiállítást láttunk.

We saw an interesting new exhibition in Pécs.

❌ Több kényelmesebb szobát kérünk.

Wrong for 'we want a more comfortable room' — több expresses quantity.

✅ Kényelmesebb szobát kérünk.

We would like a more comfortable room.

❌ A szegedi kutatók sikeres.

Incorrect — the predicative adjective must agree with the plural subject.

✅ A szegedi kutatók sikeresek.

The researchers from Szeged are successful.

❌ A Némettanár Berlinből érkezett.

Wrong if the profession is meant — common compound names of school-subject teachers are lowercase.

✅ A némettanár Berlinből érkezett.

The German-language teacher arrived from Berlin.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral order mirrors scope: relational/classifying adjective nearest the noun, description in the middle, evaluation outside.
  • A marked order needs a discourse-supported grouping; flexibility does not mean randomness.
  • Relational -i adjectives classify; gradable qualitative adjectives describe a scale.
  • Simple place-name derivatives are lowercase, while complex proper names may preserve capitals and use a hyphen.
  • -i classification and possessive phrases package different relationships.
  • Compounds such as magyartanár and free phrases such as magyar tanár can contrast in meaning.
  • Attributive adjectives are invariant; plural predicate adjectives agree.
