Adjective Order and Relational -i Adjectives: Meanings and Usage

Hungarian adjective order communicates scope. In a neutral sequence, a relational modifier next to the noun helps define its category, a descriptive adjective adds an observable property, and an outer evaluative adjective comments on the whole expression: egy kiváló új szegedi étterem “an excellent new restaurant in Szeged.” Reordering is possible, but it asks the listener to build a different grouping or contrast.

Relational -i adjectives are central to this system because they package place, time, affiliation, or subject matter into a compact modifier. This page shows how meaning and discourse influence their position. The forms page gives the core morphology; the contrast page handles ambiguous boundaries and marked orders.

Classify first, then describe the category

A modifier nearest the noun often creates a recognized subtype. An adjective farther left describes or evaluates that subtype.

Egy csendes vidéki szállodában töltöttük a hétvégét.

We spent the weekend in a quiet country hotel.

Az iroda egy korszerű digitális nyilvántartási rendszert vezetett be.

The office introduced a modern digital records system.

Vettünk egy gyönyörű régi perzsa szőnyeget.

We bought a beautiful old Persian rug.

Vidéki szálloda, digitális … rendszer, and perzsa szőnyeg first classify the noun. Csendes, korszerű, and gyönyörű régi evaluate or describe the resulting category. Hungarian readers do not apply a rigid numbered list; they interpret which modifier forms the tightest semantic unit with the noun.

💡
Ask which modifier identifies the noun’s subtype. Keep that modifier closest to the noun, then place looser descriptions and evaluations outside it.

Reordering changes scope or signals contrast

An unusual order can be grammatical when prior discourse supplies a category. Compare:

Két új budapesti üzlet nyílt a héten.

Two new shops opened in Budapest this week.

A budapesti új üzletek közül ez van a legközelebb.

Among the new Budapest shops, this one is the closest.

The first is a neutral announcement: budapesti üzlet is geographically classified, then új describes it. The second treats új üzletek as an established set and contrasts its Budapest members with members elsewhere. Without that context, budapesti új üzletek feels unnecessarily marked.

Adjective coordination differs from hierarchy. Coordinated properties normally take és or punctuation and have equal status: egy világos és tágas szoba “a bright and spacious room.” A hierarchical sequence needs no conjunction: egy tágas budapesti lakás.

Place and origin with -i

Relational -i often means “located in,” “originating in,” or “associated with,” and context selects the relation.

A pécsi barátaink hétvégén meglátogatnak bennünket.

Our friends from Pécs are visiting us this weekend.

A pécsi konferenciát idén online rendezik meg.

The conference in Pécs is being held online this year.

A tokaji borokat külföldön is jól ismerik.

Tokaj wines are well known abroad too.

The same morphological relation supports origin for friends, planned location for a conference, and recognized provenance for wine. -i does not itself mean exactly “from” or “in.” That underspecification makes it productive but also prevents word-for-word translation.

Derived adjectives from simple place names are lowercase in running text: Pécs → pécsi, Tokaj → tokaji. This applies even though the base is a proper name. A complex foreign name can retain capitals and use a hyphen, as in New York-i; exact official-name spelling should be verified rather than guessed.

Time and institutional relations

Temporal -i adjectives locate a noun within a recurring or named interval: reggeli vonat “morning train,” heti jelentés “weekly report,” tavalyi eredmény “last year’s result.” They often stand close to the noun because they classify which event or version is meant.

A holnapi megbeszélést áttették délutánra.

Tomorrow's meeting has been moved to the afternoon.

Elolvastad a havi pénzügyi jelentést?

Have you read the monthly financial report?

In the second phrase, pénzügyi jelentés forms an institutional/subject-matter category; havi specifies its schedule. The exact order follows scope: a monthly instance of a financial report.

Institutional adjectives likewise express affiliation or domain, not ownership in a narrow sense: egyetemi oktató “university lecturer,” minisztériumi döntés “ministerial decision,” munkahelyi vita “workplace dispute.”

A minisztériumi szakmai egyeztetés több órán át tartott.

The ministry's professional consultation lasted several hours. (formal)

Here szakmai egyeztetés is a technical/professional consultation, and minisztériumi locates it institutionally. Another context could prefer szakmai minisztériumi egyeztetés to contrast a professional ministry consultation with a political one, but the listener needs that contrast.

Relational adjectives are usually nongradable

An adjective such as szép names a scale and readily forms szebb “more beautiful.” Pure relational budapesti or egyetemi assigns a category and normally resists degree comparison. If a speaker says budapestibb or egyetemibb, the form is creative and means “more characteristically Budapest-like” or “more university-like,” not literally “located more in Budapest.”

Ez a környék sokkal csendesebb, mint a belváros.

This neighborhood is much quieter than the city center.

A hangulat inkább fesztiválszerű, mint egyetemi.

The atmosphere is more like a festival than academic/university-like.

The second sentence avoids forcing a relational adjective into an ordinary scale. Inkább X, mint Y compares competing characterizations. English “more academic” can be qualitative, but Hungarian akadémikusabb, tudományosabb, or inkább egyetemi jellegű may differ depending on the intended meaning.

Attributive invariability and predicative plurality

Relational adjectives obey the ordinary adjective split. Before a noun, they do not agree:

Szegedi kutatók új nyelvi adatbázist készítettek.

Researchers in Szeged created a new linguistic database.

Szegedi is capitalized here only because it begins the sentence; the lexical adjective is szegedi. It remains unmarked for plural, while kutatók carries -k.

As a predicate or noun substitute, an adjective can carry plural:

A kutatók szegediek, de a projekt országos.

The researchers are from Szeged, but the project is nationwide.

A helyi termékeket keresem, nem az importáltakat.

I'm looking for the local products, not the imported ones.

Szegediek agrees with plural kutatók. Helyi remains bare before termékeket, while substantivized importáltakat carries plural and accusative endings. English has invariant adjectives in both positions, so this Hungarian predicative marking requires active attention.

💡
Position predicts inflection: before a noun, even a long adjective stack stays unchanged; without a noun, a plural predicate or noun substitute takes plural marking.

Compounds carry conventional meanings

Separate gyors vonat describes speed; compound gyorsvonat names a train category. Separate hideg víz is water whose temperature is low; hidegvíz-csap is a compound naming a cold-water tap. Compound spelling is therefore not decoration: it can tell the reader whether the modifier freely describes or helps name a conventional concept.

A gyors vonat végül minden állomáson megállt.

The fast train ended up stopping at every station.

A gyorsvonatra csak helyjeggyel lehet felszállni.

You can board the express train only with a seat reservation.

Productive relational -i adjectives remain separate from an ordinary noun: budapesti pályaudvar, nyári menetrend. Some lexicalized expressions and longer compounds follow their own spelling rules. If a term names an established category, check a current dictionary rather than deriving its word boundary from English.

A short dialogue

This is neutral (informal) Hungarian between two people choosing accommodation.

– Találtál jó balatoni szállást? – Igen, egy hangulatos kis tihanyi apartmant.

– Did you find good accommodation near Lake Balaton? – Yes, a charming little apartment in Tihany.

– Régi az épület? – Kívül régi, de a szobák modernek és világosak.

– Is the building old? – It's old outside, but the rooms are modern and bright.

– Akkor foglaljuk le! A tihanyi apartmanok általában gyorsan elfogynak.

– Then let's book it! Apartments in Tihany usually sell out quickly.

The phrase hangulatos kis tihanyi apartman follows evaluation → size → relation → noun. Predicative modernek, világosak carry plural because a szobák is plural; attributive tihanyi remains invariant before apartmanok.

Formal and informal density

Formal administrative prose often stacks relational modifiers to define a precise category:

Az éves intézményi minőségbiztosítási jelentést márciusig kell benyújtani.

The annual institutional quality-assurance report must be submitted by March. (formal)

The phrase is compact but dense. In (informal) speech, speakers often unpack it:

A jelentést minden évben le kell adni; az intézmény minőségbiztosításáról szól.

The report has to be submitted every year; it's about the institution's quality assurance. (informal/neutral speech)

Both are grammatical. The best order depends not only on semantics but on how much pre-nominal information the audience can process.

Common Mistakes

❌ Megnéztünk három újakat pécsi lakásokat.

Incorrect — attributive adjectives remain invariant, and a noun after három is singular.

✅ Megnéztünk három új pécsi lakást.

We viewed three new apartments in Pécs.

❌ A vendégek budapesti.

Incorrect — a plural predicative adjective must agree.

✅ A vendégek budapestiek.

The guests are from Budapest.

❌ Egy budapesti érdekes kiállítást ajánlottak.

Awkward without special contrast — the relational modifier normally stays closer to the noun.

✅ Egy érdekes budapesti kiállítást ajánlottak.

They recommended an interesting exhibition in Budapest.

❌ Több csendesebb szobát szeretnénk.

Wrong for 'we would like a quieter room' — több counts a larger number of rooms.

✅ Csendesebb szobát szeretnénk.

We would like a quieter room.

Key Takeaways

  • Modifier order follows semantic scope: classifying and relational material usually hugs the noun; descriptions and evaluations sit farther out.
  • Reordering is possible when prior discourse establishes a category or contrast.
  • -i can express place, origin, time, institution, or subject matter; context specifies the relation.
  • Simple place-name derivatives are lowercase, except for ordinary sentence-initial capitalization.
  • Attributive adjectives remain invariant, while plural predicates and noun substitutes take plural marking.
  • Pure relational adjectives are normally nongradable; use a qualitative adjective or inkább X, mint Y when comparing characterizations.
  • Keep free descriptions separate and established compounds together.
