पहचानना means recognize or identify by connecting present evidence with an already known person, object, voice, pattern, or quality. It is not a general equivalent of English know. Its lexical frame and object marking tell you what is being identified, while aspect distinguishes an established ability from a successful act of recognition.
Stem, nasal sequence, and principal forms
The stem is पहचान- pahcān-. Adding infinitive -ना places stem-final न next to suffix-initial न: पहचानना pahcānnā. The doubled nn is morphological, not an anusvara. When another suffix replaces -ना, only the stem-final न remains: पहचानता pahcāntā, पहचाना pahcānā.
| Category | Forms |
|---|---|
| infinitive | पहचानना |
| habitual | पहचानता / पहचानती / पहचानते |
| progressive | पहचान रहा / पहचान रही / पहचान रहे |
| perfective | पहचाना / पहचानी / पहचाने / पहचानीं |
| conjunctive | पहचानकर |
| prospective | पहचानने वाला / वाली / वाले |
वह लोगों को उनकी चाल से पहचान लेती है।
vah logoṃ ko unkī cāl se pahcān letī hai.
She recognizes people by the way they walk.
सॉफ़्टवेयर तस्वीर में चेहरों को पहचान रहा है।
sofṭveyar tasvīr meṃ cehroṃ ko pahcān rahā hai.
The software is identifying faces in the photograph.
The progressive is natural when identification is an ongoing analytical process. For one sudden successful recognition, the perfective or पहचान लेना is usually more idiomatic.
People and differential object marking
A definite person being recognized normally takes को: मैंने रीना को पहचाना. Pronouns already show the same marking in forms such as मुझे, उसे, उन्हें. Because the marked object cannot control perfective agreement, the verb remains default masculine singular पहचाना.
इतने वर्षों बाद भी चौकीदार ने मुझे पहचान लिया।
itne varṣoṃ bād bhī caukīdār ne mujhe pahcān liyā.
Even after so many years, the guard recognized me.
क्या आपने वीडियो में उस पुराने खिलाड़ी को पहचाना?
kyā āpne vīḍiyo meṃ us purāne khilāṛī ko pahcānā?
Did you recognize that former player in the video?
With a nonspecific human object, omission of को is possible in suitably generic contexts, but everyday references to a particular person strongly favor it. The general conditioning is covered under differential object marking.
Voices, objects, patterns, and qualities
Inanimate or nonhuman objects are often unmarked, especially when their identity rather than their affectedness is central: आवाज़ पहचानना, निशान पहचानना, बीमारी के लक्षण पहचानना. An unmarked object can control perfective agreement.
उसने फ़ोन पर मेरी आवाज़ तुरंत पहचानी।
usne fon par merī āvāz turant pahcānī.
He/She recognized my voice immediately on the phone.
अनुभवी किसान ने पत्तों पर बीमारी के निशान पहचाने।
anubhavī kisān ne pattoṃ par bīmārī ke niśān pahcāne.
The experienced farmer identified signs of disease on the leaves.
Feminine आवाज़ selects पहचानी; masculine plural निशान selects पहचाने. With a को-marked object, this visible agreement disappears.
The verb also recognizes less concrete properties: a lie from someone's tone, a recurring pattern in data, or a person's contribution. In institutional language, प्रतिभा पहचानना means identify talent and समस्या पहचानना means identify a problem.
समिति ने समय रहते असली समस्या पहचानी।
samiti ne samay rahte aslī samasyā pahcānī.
The committee identified the real problem in time.
पहचानना versus जानना
जानना describes knowledge or familiarity; पहचानना describes successful identification from cues. You may recognize a face without knowing the person's name, or know facts about someone without recognizing them in a crowd.
मैं लेखक का काम जानती थी, पर उन्हें सामने देखकर नहीं पहचान पाई।
maĩ lekhak kā kām jāntī thī, par unheṃ sāmne dekhkar nahīṃ pahcān pāī.
I knew the author's work, but I couldn't recognize them on seeing them in person. (female speaker)
Perfective, future, and subjunctive
पहचानना is transitive, so a perfective agent normally takes ने. The examples above show both outcomes: object agreement with unmarked आवाज़/निशान and default पहचाना with a को-marked person.
| Person | Subjunctive | Future masculine | Future feminine |
|---|---|---|---|
| मैं | पहचानूँ | पहचानूँगा | पहचानूँगी |
| तुम | पहचानो | पहचानोगे | पहचानोगी |
| यह / वह | पहचाने | पहचानेगा | पहचानेगी |
| हम / आप / ये / वे | पहचानें | पहचानेंगे | पहचानेंगी |
वह मेरी लिखावट देखकर मुझे पहचान जाएगा।
vah merī likhāvaṭ dekhkar mujhe pahcān jāegā.
He will identify me from my handwriting.
ज़रूरी है कि डॉक्टर शुरुआती लक्षण पहचानें।
zarūrī hai ki ḍokṭar śurūātī lakṣaṇ pahcāneṃ.
It is important that doctors identify the early symptoms.
Imperatives, participles, and compounds
Imperatives are intimate पहचान, familiar पहचानो, and respectful पहचानिए. A request usually supplies the evidence or the object: “recognize this tune,” “identify the difference.”
ध्यान से सुनो और बताओ कि यह धुन पहचानते हो या नहीं।
dhyān se suno aur batāo ki yah dhun pahcānte ho yā nahīṃ.
Listen carefully and say whether you recognize this tune. (familiar)
Participles include पहचानते हुए, पहचानकर, and पहचानने वाला. Perfective पहचाना हुआ can mean recognized or identified, but established adjective जाना-पहचाना is the ordinary expression for familiar or well known.
पहचान लेना highlights successful, often prompt recognition. पहचान पाना presents recognition as achieved despite difficulty. The bare lexical verb is not an auxiliary or vector.
धुँधली तस्वीर में भी उसने दुकान पहचान ली।
dhũdhlī tasvīr meṃ bhī usne dukān pahcān lī.
Even in the blurry photograph, she managed to identify the shop.
For causation, contemporary Hindi normally uses पहचान कराना “make known/introduce or help identify” and पहचान करवाना “have identification carried out,” rather than inventing a simple causative. The exact participant structure must be stated.
मेज़बान ने नए सदस्यों की सभी से पहचान कराई।
mezbān ne nae sadasyoṃ kī sabhī se pahcān karāī.
The host introduced the new members to everyone.
An idiomatic extension असली चेहरा पहचानना means see someone's true character, not merely identify the physical face.

Key Takeaways
पहचानना is a transitive identification verb with stem पहचान-. Its spelling produces pahcānnā only before infinitival -nā. Specific people normally take को; unmarked objects may control perfective agreement. Use पहचान लेना for achieved recognition, पहचान पाना for difficult success, and distinguish recognition from the knowledge expressed by जानना.
