Transitive perfective with ने

In a canonical transitive perfective clause, Hindi marks the actor with ने: रीना ने चिट्ठी लिखी “Reena wrote the letter.” This is the core of Hindi split ergativity. ने is not a general word for “by,” intention, or past time; it belongs to a particular combination of transitivity and perfective aspect, and it changes which noun phrase can control agreement.

The core construction

The productive pattern is:

actor + ने + direct object + perfective predicate

आदित्य ने दरवाज़ा खोला।

āditya ne darvāzā kholā.

Aditya opened the door.

नैना ने खिड़की खोली।

nainā ne khiṛkī kholī.

Naina opened the window.

बच्चों ने सारे डिब्बे खोले।

baccoṃ ne sāre ḍibbe khole.

The children opened all the boxes.

The actors differ in gender and number, but they are all marked by ने and therefore do not control the perfective. Unmarked masculine singular दरवाज़ा selects खोला, feminine singular खिड़की selects खोली, and masculine plural डिब्बे selects खोले.

💡
In a perfective ने clause, stop looking at the actor for agreement. Look first for an unmarked direct object; if one is eligible, it controls the perfective. If none is eligible, expect default masculine singular.

Forms of the actor plus ने

Nouns simply take ने, but pronouns have conventional combined forms.

Direct pronounErgative formExample opening
मैंमैंनेमैंने चाय बनाई…
हमहमनेहमने चाय बनाई…
तूतूनेतूने चाय बनाई…
तुमतुमनेतुमने चाय बनाई…
आपआपनेआपने चाय बनाई…
यह / वहइसने / उसनेउसने चाय बनाई…
ये / वेइन्होंने / उन्होंनेउन्होंने चाय बनाई…

मैंने आज नाश्ता बनाया।

maĩne āj nāśtā banāyā.

I made breakfast today.

आपने इतनी अच्छी चाय कैसे बनाई?

āpne itnī acchī cāy kaise banāī?

How did you make such good tea? (respectful)

The fixed guide romanization is maĩne for मैंने. Neither first-person मैंने nor respectful आपने selects a person-marked perfective; object नाश्ता/चाय determines बनाया/बनाई.

Why ने appears: perfective transitivity

Compare the same transitive verb across aspectual layers.

रीमा हर रात कहानी पढ़ती है।

rīmā har rāt kahānī paṛhtī hai.

Reema reads a story every night.

रीमा अभी कहानी पढ़ रही है।

rīmā abhī kahānī paṛh rahī hai.

Reema is reading a story now.

रीमा ने रात को कहानी पढ़ी।

rīmā ne rāt ko kahānī paṛhī.

Reema read the story at night.

Habitual and progressive predicates normally leave the subject unmarked and agree with it. The perfective presents the reading event as a bounded whole, marks the transitive actor with ने, and lets unmarked feminine कहानी control पढ़ी. Hindi therefore layers lexical stem पढ़-, aspect, agreement, and any auxiliary; English tense labels do not determine the case pattern by themselves.

The simple perfective commonly narrates a completed past event, but ने also remains when an auxiliary creates a present perfect or past perfect.

मैंने रिपोर्ट भेजी है।

maĩne riporṭ bhejī hai.

I have sent the report.

Perfective भेजी agrees with feminine रिपोर्ट, and present है makes the result relevant now. ने is licensed by the perfective layer, not by “past tense” alone.

Object marking changes agreement

A direct object marked with को cannot control agreement. When the actor already bears ने, neither marked argument is eligible, and the predicate takes default masculine singular.

सोनल ने रोहित को बुलाया।

sonal ne rohit ko bulāyā.

Sonal called Rohit over.

अध्यापिका ने दोनों छात्राओं को रोका।

adhyāpikā ne donoṃ chātrāoṃ ko rokā.

The teacher stopped both female students.

The feminine actor and animate objects do not trigger feminine agreement: बुलाया/रोका is default masculine singular. को itself is conditioned by animacy, specificity, definiteness, lexical semantics, and construction; it is not added mechanically to every English object. The full controller contrast continues on perfective object agreement.

💡
Case marking outranks semantic prominence. A woman can be the actor and female students the object while the verb remains masculine singular, because ने blocks actor agreement and को blocks object agreement.

Compact agreement outcomes

Structure after नेExampleOutcome
unmarked masculine singular objectपत्र लिखाmasculine singular agreement
unmarked feminine singular objectचिट्ठी लिखीfeminine singular agreement
unmarked masculine plural objectपत्र लिखेmasculine plural agreement
unmarked feminine plural objectचिट्ठियाँ लिखींfeminine plural agreement
को-marked objectरीना को बुलायाdefault masculine singular

Standalone feminine plural has nasalized लिखीं. Before an auxiliary, contemporary Standard Hindi uses लिखी हैं/लिखी थीं, with number carried by the auxiliary.

Not every apparent past transitive uses ने

The core rule has lexical and constructional edges. Most importantly, लाना “bring” normally forms its perfective without ने and agrees with its subject: रीना किताब लाई, not रीना ने किताब लाई in the ordinary pattern. Some predicates show optional or variable ने, conditioned by lexeme, region, and construction.

अमन मेरे लिए पानी लाया।

aman mere lie pānī lāyā.

Aman brought water for me.

This is a real irregularity; intention does not explain it. Learn exceptional argument frames with the verb, and use the dedicated ने or no ने decision guide for the edges. Passive clauses also use a different alignment: दरवाज़ा खोला गया “the door was opened” has no overt ergative actor.

Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts

कविता ने टिकट खरीदा।

kavitā ne ṭikaṭ kharīdā.

Kavita bought the ticket.

कविता ने टिकट नहीं खरीदा।

kavitā ne ṭikaṭ nahīṃ kharīdā.

Kavita did not buy the ticket.

क्या कविता ने टिकट खरीदा?

kyā kavitā ne ṭikaṭ kharīdā?

Did Kavita buy the ticket?

Negation precedes the perfective predicate, and initial क्या makes a yes–no question. Neither polarity nor clause type removes ने or changes masculine singular agreement with टिकट.

Infinitive versus finite perfective

लिखना is “to write/writing,” not “wrote.” A completed transitive event needs a perfective form and the appropriate case structure.

मुझे यह पत्र लिखना है।

mujhe yah patr likhnā hai.

I have to write this letter.

This infinitival necessity has dative मुझे, not ergative मैंने. Compare the completed event मैंने यह पत्र लिखा “I wrote this letter.”

Common Mistakes

Adding ने to any past event

❌ सीमा ने कल घर गई।

Incorrect — ordinary intransitive जाना does not take ने.

✅ सीमा कल घर गई।

sīmā kal ghar gaī.

Seema went home yesterday.

Omitting ने from a canonical transitive perfective

❌ रोहन चिट्ठी लिखी।

Incorrect in neutral Standard Hindi — canonical transitive perfective लिखना requires ने on the actor.

✅ रोहन ने चिट्ठी लिखी।

rohan ne ciṭṭhī likhī.

Rohan wrote the letter.

Agreeing with the actor after ने

❌ रीमा ने नया लेख लिखी।

Incorrect — masculine लेख, not feminine actor रीमा, controls agreement.

✅ रीमा ने नया लेख लिखा।

rīmā ne nayā lekh likhā.

Reema wrote a new article.

Letting a को-marked object control

❌ मीरा ने अपनी बहन को बुलाई।

Incorrect — को blocks object agreement, leaving default masculine singular बुलाया.

✅ मीरा ने अपनी बहन को बुलाया।

mīrā ne apnī bahan ko bulāyā.

Meera called her sister over.

Using the infinitive for the completed event

❌ मैंने कल यह काम करना।

Incorrect — करना is non-finite and cannot narrate a completed event here.

✅ मैंने कल यह काम किया।

maĩne kal yah kām kiyā.

I did this work yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Canonical transitive perfectives mark the actor with ने; habitual and progressive transitives normally do not.
  • A ने-marked actor cannot control perfective agreement; an eligible unmarked object can.
  • If the object bears को, the predicate normally uses default masculine singular.
  • The rule has lexical and constructional exceptions, especially ordinary perfective लाना, so ने is not simply a past or intention marker.
