An ordinary intransitive perfective has one unmarked core participant, and the perfective agrees with that subject: मोहन आया, सीमा आई, लड़के आए, लड़कियाँ आईं. It does not add ने merely because the event is past or intentional. This pattern covers motion, arrival, falling, dying, opening spontaneously, and many changes of state.
Compact agreement paradigm
| Controller | आना | गिरना |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | आया | गिरा |
| feminine singular | आई | गिरी |
| masculine/mixed plural | आए | गिरे |
| feminine plural simple | आईं | गिरीं |
रोहन कल रात लौटा।
rohan kal rāt lauṭā.
Rohan returned last night.
नैना कल रात लौटी।
nainā kal rāt lauṭī.
Naina returned last night.
मेहमान आधी रात को लौटे।
mehmān ādhī rāt ko lauṭe.
The guests returned at midnight.
दोनों बहनें आधी रात को लौटीं।
donoṃ bahneṃ ādhī rāt ko lauṭīṃ.
Both sisters returned at midnight.
The perfective marks gender and number, not person. A male speaker says मैं लौटा, a female speaker मैं लौटी.
Motion and change-of-state verbs
Common intransitive classes include motion (आना, जाना, पहुँचना), posture/change (बैठना, उठना), spontaneous change (खुलना, टूटना, गिरना), and bodily or life events (सोना, मरना in their intransitive senses).
खिड़की हवा से खुली और पर्दा नीचे गिरा।
khiṛkī havā se khulī aur pardā nīce girā.
The window opened because of the wind, and the curtain fell down.
Feminine खिड़की controls खुली; masculine पर्दा controls गिरा. हवा से expresses a cause/source, not an ergative agent.
Compare the transitive counterparts:
रीना ने खिड़की खोली और पर्दा गिराया।
rīnā ne khiṛkī kholī aur pardā girāyā.
Rina opened the window and lowered the curtain.
The transitive stems खोलना/गिराना introduce an actor and an object, triggering ने in the perfective. The related forms are lexical pairs; Hindi does not use one unchanged verb as freely as English open.
Simple, present-perfect, and past-perfect layers
| Form | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|
| वह पहुँचा | he arrived |
| वह पहुँचा है | he has arrived / is now there |
| वह पहुँचा था | he had arrived / arrived in an earlier past frame |
| वे पहुँचे हैं | they have arrived |
ट्रेन प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर पहुँची।
ṭren pleṭform par pahũcī.
The train arrived at the platform.
आख़िरी ट्रेन प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर पहुँच चुकी है।
āxirī ṭren pleṭform par pahũc cukī hai.
The last train has already reached the platform.
The simple perfective has no auxiliary. In पहुँच चुकी है, completive चुकी adds a completed/result-relevant viewpoint and present है anchors it to now. चुकना is compatible with this event but is not a freely interchangeable decoration for every predicate.
Feminine plural with and without auxiliaries
सारी बसें देर से आईं।
sārī baseṃ der se āīṃ.
All the buses arrived late.
सारी बसें देर से आई हैं।
sārī baseṃ der se āī haiṃ.
All the buses have arrived late.
Standalone simple आईं has feminine plural nasalization. Before present हैं, Standard Hindi uses आई. A past-perfect plural similarly has आई थीं, not आईं थीं.
Honorific singular agreement
One respected person can trigger plural/honorific agreement.
पिताजी सुबह दिल्ली गए।
pitājī subah dillī gae.
Father went to Delhi in the morning. (respectful singular)
माताजी सुबह दिल्ली गई हैं।
mātājī subah dillī gaī haiṃ.
Mother has gone to Delhi this morning. (respectful singular)
Masculine गए visibly shows honorific plurality. In the feminine present perfect, गई keeps feminine gender while plural हैं carries honorific number.
Experiencer constructions: the subject-like person may be marked
Some one-experiencer predicates are syntactically not ordinary unmarked-subject clauses.
मुझे अचानक उसकी बात याद आई।
mujhe acānak uskī bāt yād āī.
I suddenly remembered what she had said.
बच्चों को जल्दी नींद आ गई।
baccoṃ ko jaldī nīnd ā gaī.
The children became sleepy quickly.
The semantic experiencer is marked by को. Feminine बात/नींद controls आई/आ गई. Calling the experiencer the “doer” does not override Hindi case and agreement.
Agentive intransitives and limited ने variation
The basic rule has a real lexical edge. Some agentive activity predicates, especially नाचना, खाँसना, चिल्लाना, can appear with ने in a bounded perfective, with acceptability varying by verb, construction, region, and speaker.
गायक ने मंच पर खूब नाचा।
gāyak ne mañc par khūb nācā.
The singer danced energetically on stage.
This does not make ने a general intention marker. Clearly intentional motion and posture predicates ordinarily remain unmarked:
रीना घर गई और सीधे सो गई।
rīnā ghar gaī aur sīdhe so gaī.
Rina went home and went straight to sleep.
Do not invent रीना ने घर गई. Learn exceptional or variable ने behavior with the lexical predicate, and use the ordinary no-ने pattern as the productive default for intransitives. The advanced distribution is mapped on optional and variable ने with some predicates.
Negative and question contrasts
क्या मेहमान पहुँच गए?
kyā mehmān pahũc gae?
Did the guests arrive?
मेहमान समय पर नहीं पहुँचे।
mehmān samay par nahīṃ pahũce.
The guests did not arrive on time.
सीमा अभी तक क्यों नहीं आई?
sīmā abhī tak kyoṃ nahīṃ āī?
Why hasn't Seema come yet?
Questions and negation preserve agreement. The last sentence has a result-relevant English translation even without है; अभी तक and context make nonarrival relevant to now. This shows why perfective aspect cannot be reduced to one English tense label.
Common Mistakes
Adding ने to ordinary intransitive motion
❌ मोहन ने कल आया।
Incorrect — ordinary intransitive आना takes an unmarked perfective subject.
✅ मोहन कल आया।
mohan kal āyā.
Mohan came yesterday.
Ignoring feminine agreement
❌ मेरी ट्रेन देर से पहुँचा।
Incorrect — feminine ट्रेन requires पहुँची.
✅ मेरी ट्रेन देर से पहुँची।
merī ṭren der se pahũcī.
My train arrived late.
Using singular agreement for a plural subject
❌ सारे दरवाज़े खुला।
Incorrect — masculine plural दरवाज़े requires खुले.
✅ सारे दरवाज़े खुले।
sāre darvāze khule.
All the doors opened.
Matching a predicate to the marked experiencer
❌ लड़कों को वह बात याद आए।
Incorrect — singular feminine बात selects याद आई.
✅ लड़कों को वह बात याद आई।
laṛkoṃ ko vah bāt yād āī.
The boys remembered that point.
Using an infinitive for the completed event
❌ बच्चा अचानक गिरना।
Incorrect — गिरना is an infinitive, not a finite perfective.
✅ बच्चा अचानक गिरा।
baccā acānak girā.
The child suddenly fell.
Key Takeaways
- Ordinary intransitive perfectives agree with their unmarked subject and do not take ने.
- The agreement forms are masculine -आ/-ए and feminine -ई/-ईं, with frequent irregular bases.
- Auxiliaries add present-perfect or past-perfect anchoring; feminine plural morphology changes before an auxiliary.
- Marked experiencer predicates and a limited lexical class of agentive intransitives require more than the simple subject-agreement rule.
