Most Hindi verbs have a stable core pattern: canonical perfective transitives mark their agent with ने, while ordinary perfective intransitives do not. A smaller set of predicates occurs at the boundary. With verbs such as खेलना “play” and बोलना “speak/say,” the presence of an object, the way the event is construed, and regional or register preferences can all affect ने. Begin with the productive split-ergativity pattern, then treat the lexical zones on this page as refinements.
There is no honest one-line rule that eliminates this variation. The practical method is to identify the predicate's argument structure in the actual clause, learn its common collocations, and use agreement as evidence for the selected frame.
Clear transitive frames often take ने
Variation does not mean that ने is freely optional with every use of a verb. With many predicates, an overt direct object makes the perfective transitive frame clear:
लड़कियों ने हॉकी खेली।
laṛkiyoṃ ne hokī khelī.
The girls played hockey.
रीना ने सच बोला।
rīnā ne sac bolā.
Rina spoke the truth.
Feminine हॉकी controls खेली after लड़कियों ने. Masculine सच controls बोला after रीना ने. The hockey example has the ordinary transitive construal. With lexically variable बोलना, however, overt nominal content makes a transitive analysis available and often favored without eliminating a competing unmarked frame for many speakers:
रीना सच बोली।
rīnā sac bolī.
Rina spoke the truth.
Here feminine बोली agrees with unmarked रीना. Treat this as predicate-specific variation, not as a license to omit ने from ordinary object-taking perfectives.
Likewise, an understood specific object can preserve the transitive frame:
यह बात किसने बोली? — रीना ने बोली।
yah bāt kisne bolī? — rīnā ne bolī.
Who said this? — Rina did.
The reply omits बात, but feminine बोली retrieves it from the question. Surface object omission is not the same thing as genuinely intransitive use.
खेलना can be an intransitive event or agentive activity
Objectless खेलना shows a well-established contrast. An unmarked subject presents participation in the event and agrees normally:
बच्चियाँ मैदान में खेलीं।
bacciyā̃ maidān meṃ khelīṃ.
The girls played in the field.
An ergative subject is also common when play is construed as a bounded, controlled activity, especially with manner or performance evaluation:
बच्चियों ने पूरे दो घंटे खेला।
bacciyoṃ ne pūre do ghanṭe khelā.
The girls played for a full two hours.
हमारी टीम ने आज बहुत अच्छा खेला।
hamārī ṭīm ne āj bahut acchā khelā.
Our team played very well today.
With no eligible unmarked object, खेला is masculine singular default in the ने versions. The contrast is not simply “without ने informal, with ने formal.” Both patterns are contemporary and neutral in appropriate construals. The unmarked version profiles the subjects' participation; the ergative version readily profiles their controlled performance or delimited activity.
Duration alone does not mechanically license ने, and speakers may accept both frames in overlapping contexts. The agreement contrast—बच्चियाँ खेलीं versus बच्चियों ने खेला—is the clearest diagnostic of which structure a speaker chose.
बोलना varies by complement type and register
With no object, unmarked-subject बोलना is the conservative neutral pattern for “speak” or “utter words”:
रीना धीरे बोली ताकि बच्चा न जागे।
rīnā dhīre bolī tāki baccā na jāge.
Rina spoke softly so that the child would not wake up.
When बोलना has nominal content such as सच, झूठ, एक शब्द, it behaves transitively and takes ने in the perfective. In conversational North Indian Hindi, ने + बोला + कि-clause is also widespread:
रीना ने बोला कि वह थोड़ी देर में आएगी।
rīnā ne bolā ki vah thoṛī der meṃ āegī.
Rina said that she would come in a little while. (informal conversational)
Edited formal prose often prefers रीना ने कहा कि... for this reporting function (formal/neutral written). The colloquial ने बोला कि pattern construes the following content as what was said; matrix बोला is default masculine singular because the finite कि-clause is not a gender-number controller.
By contrast, रीना बोली कि... is also possible and makes the unmarked subject control feminine बोली. The two patterns overlap semantically, but their agreement proves that speakers have selected different syntactic frames rather than carelessly adding or dropping a particle.
Extended ergative marking with bodily and controlled actions
Some varieties permit or favor ने with perfective predicates that are often described as intransitive—particularly bodily emissions or controlled activities such as coughing, sneezing, bathing, shouting, or resting. The exact inventory and naturalness vary substantially by region and speaker.
वह अचानक ज़ोर से खाँसा।
vah acānak zor se khā̃sā.
He suddenly coughed loudly.
उसने अचानक ज़ोर से खाँसा।
usne acānak zor se khā̃sā.
He suddenly gave a loud cough. (accepted in varieties with extended ergative marking)
The second pattern is not equally neutral for every speaker. It presents the event in a more agent-like or bounded frame, but volitionality is only a tendency, not a reliable switch: coughs and sneezes can be involuntary, and dialect can matter more than conscious control.
Forms such as उसने नहाया also occur (regional/colloquial) beside widely neutral वह नहाया. Learners aiming at broadly accepted educated Standard Hindi should use the unmarked pattern with ordinary intransitive नहाना, while recognizing the marked version rather than “correcting” every speaker who uses it.
Agreement makes the alternation visible
Masculine singular forms can hide the difference because both subject agreement and default agreement may look like खेला or बोला. Feminine or plural subjects reveal it:
| Frame | Example shape | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| unmarked intransitive | लड़कियाँ खेलीं | feminine plural subject |
| ने-marked objectless activity | लड़कियों ने खेला | masculine singular default |
| ने-marked transitive | लड़कियों ने हॉकी खेली | feminine object हॉकी |
This three-way contrast separates case choice from meaning-based guesses. In particular, लड़कियों ने हॉकी खेली does not agree with the girls; it agrees with हॉकी.
Negation and focus preserve the selected frame
Once a speaker selects a case frame, negation does not reverse it:
बच्चों ने बारिश की वजह से आज नहीं खेला।
baccoṃ ne bāriś kī vajah se āj nahīṃ khelā.
The children didn't play today because of the rain.
The objectless agentive frame remains बच्चों ने ... खेला under नहीं. An unmarked version बच्चे आज नहीं खेले is also grammatical, but it instantiates the other frame; the difference is not caused by negation itself.
Focus particles likewise attach to constituents without licensing ने:
हमारी टीम ने ही अच्छा खेला; बाकी टीमें थकी हुई थीं।
hamārī ṭīm ne hī acchā khelā; bākī ṭīmeṃ thakī huī thīṃ.
Only our team played well; the other teams were tired.
Particle ही scopes over the full ergative subject हमारी टीम ने. It emphasizes which team, while default खेला follows from the objectless ergative frame.
Variation is local to each clause
Reporting and evaluation frequently embed a variable predicate:
कोच ने कहा कि लड़कियों ने दबाव में भी अच्छा खेला।
koc ne kahā ki laṛkiyoṃ ne dabāv meṃ bhī acchā khelā.
The coach said that the girls played well even under pressure.
Matrix कोच ने कहा and embedded लड़कियों ने खेला independently license their ergative subjects. A different embedded construal can use an unmarked subject:
कोच ने देखा कि लड़कियाँ बाहर खेलीं और फिर घर चली गईं।
koc ne dekhā ki laṛkiyā̃ bāhar khelīṃ aur phir ghar calī gaīṃ.
The coach saw that the girls played outside and then went home.
Here लड़कियाँ controls feminine plural खेलीं and चली गईं. The matrix ने cannot spread into the embedded clause, and coordination favors a consistent unmarked subject across the two embedded intransitive events.
Common Mistakes
1. Extending variable ने to an ordinary unaccusative
❌ सोनिया ने अचानक गिर गई।
Incorrect in Standard Hindi — गिरना normally keeps its perfective subject unmarked.
✅ सोनिया अचानक गिर गई।
soniyā acānak gir gaī.
Sonia suddenly fell.
2. Keeping subject agreement after objectless ने
❌ लड़कियों ने पूरे दो घंटे खेलीं।
Incorrect for the objectless ergative frame — with no eligible object, use default खेला.
✅ लड़कियों ने पूरे दो घंटे खेला।
laṛkiyoṃ ne pūre do ghanṭe khelā.
The girls played for a full two hours.
3. Omitting ने from a clear object-taking perfective
❌ लड़कियाँ कल हॉकी खेलीं।
Incorrect in the intended Standard Hindi transitive perfective — overt हॉकी selects the ergative frame.
✅ लड़कियों ने कल हॉकी खेली।
laṛkiyoṃ ne kal hokī khelī.
The girls played hockey yesterday.
4. Retaining subject agreement in the ने बोला frame
❌ रीना ने बोली कि बैठक रद्द है।
Incorrect — in this ने + बोला + कि frame, there is no agreement-eligible nominal object, so use default बोला rather than feminine subject agreement.
✅ रीना ने बोला कि बैठक रद्द है।
rīnā ne bolā ki baiṭhak radd hai.
Rina said that the meeting was canceled. (informal conversational)
Key Takeaways
- First rule out an overt or recoverable object; that may make ने regularly transitive rather than optional.
- Objectless खेलना commonly alternates between unmarked event participation and an ergative agentive/performance frame.
- बोलना varies with nominal content, कि complements, and conversational versus edited register.
- Extended ergative marking with some bodily or controlled actions is speaker- and region-sensitive.
- Agreement distinguishes the selected structures: subject agreement without ने, object agreement with an unmarked object, and default agreement when an ergative frame has no object.
