Ergative ने marks the agent of many transitive perfective predicates. It is not a general marker of past time, deliberate action, or every grammatical subject. Its distribution comes from the interaction of aspect, transitivity, lexical argument structure, and clause boundaries. Once ने appears, it also removes that subject from agreement control.
The canonical environment
The clearest pattern has three parts: an agent acts on an object, the event is viewed as bounded/perfective, and the agent takes ने.
आशा ने खिड़की खोली।
āśā ne khiṛkī kholī.
Asha opened the window.
विवेक ने सारे दस्तावेज़ पढ़े हैं।
vivek ne sāre dastāvez paṛhe haiṃ.
Vivek has read all the documents.
The simple perfective खोली and present perfect पढ़े हैं both contain a perfective layer. Feminine खिड़की controls खोली; masculine plural दस्तावेज़ controls पढ़े हैं. The ने-marked agents remain syntactic subjects but are unavailable for agreement.
| Property | Canonical value |
|---|---|
| aspect | perfective |
| predicate | transitive/agentive |
| agent case | ने |
| agreement | eligible unmarked object, otherwise default |
ने is not a past-tense marker
Past habitual and past progressive clauses are imperfective, so their ordinary subjects remain unmarked. A perfective may occur with a present or past auxiliary and still license ने.
रोहित हर रविवार खाना बनाता था।
rohit har ravivār khānā banātā thā.
Rohit used to cook every Sunday.
रोहित कल शाम खाना बना रहा था।
rohit kal śām khānā banā rahā thā.
Rohit was cooking yesterday evening.
रोहित ने खाना बनाया है।
rohit ne khānā banāyā hai.
Rohit has cooked the food.
The first two are past in meaning but have no ने. The third includes present है, yet ने appears because the transitive lexical event is perfective. Aspect, not calendar time, organizes the split.
Nonperfective and irrealis forms
Habituals, progressives, ordinary futures, subjunctives, and imperatives do not take ergative ने merely because their verb is transitive.
रीमा रोज़ रिपोर्ट भेजती है।
rīmā roz riporṭ bhejtī hai.
Reema sends the report every day.
रीमा अभी रिपोर्ट भेज रही है।
rīmā abhī riporṭ bhej rahī hai.
Reema is sending the report now.
रीमा कल रिपोर्ट भेजेगी।
rīmā kal riporṭ bhejegī.
Reema will send the report tomorrow.
ज़रूरी है कि रीमा आज रिपोर्ट भेजे।
zarūrī hai ki rīmā āj riporṭ bheje.
It is essential that Reema send the report today.
Feminine Reema controls the habitual, progressive, and future forms. Subjunctive भेजे marks mood/person rather than perfective gender agreement. Adding ने to any of these subjects would confuse an ergative perfective construction with a different tense-aspect-mood structure.
Intransitive perfectives usually have no ने
An intransitive perfective normally keeps its subject unmarked, and that subject controls agreement.
सोनम देर से पहुँची।
sonam der se pahũcī.
Sonam arrived late.
दोनों बच्चे अचानक गिर गए।
donoṃ bacce acānak gir gae.
Both children suddenly fell.
बैठक समय पर हुई।
baiṭhak samay par huī.
The meeting took place on time.
Arrival, falling, and happening have no direct object in these clauses. Their perfective subjects control feminine or plural agreement. Intentionality cannot be the rule: a person may intentionally arrive, yet canonical पहुँचना remains intransitive.
For the broader aspectual system, see split ergativity and perfective aspect.
Case determines agreement after ने
An unmarked direct object controls perfective agreement; a को-marked object cannot. If nothing eligible remains, masculine singular default appears.
निखिल ने नई फ़िल्म देखी।
nikhil ne naī film dekhī.
Nikhil watched the new film.
निखिल ने उस अभिनेत्री को देखा।
nikhil ne us abhinetrī ko dekhā.
Nikhil saw that actress.
The first has object agreement फ़िल्म देखी. The second has default देखा because अभिनेत्री को is marked. ने and को thus create a structural agreement pattern; they are not decorative postpositions added after English subject and object labels.
Pronouns and constituent size
With nouns, ने follows the oblique noun phrase where morphology requires it. With pronouns, it forms conventional units: मैंने, हमने, तुमने, आपने, इसने, उसने, इन्होंने, उन्होंने. Modifiers belong inside the marked constituent.
उन दोनों अनुभवी डॉक्टरों ने मरीज़ देखा।
un donoṃ anubhavī ḍokṭaroṃ ne marīz dekhā.
Those two experienced doctors examined the patient.
The full phrase उन दोनों अनुभवी डॉक्टरों ने is one ergative subject constituent. ने does not attach only to डॉक्टरों semantically; it marks the entire noun phrase. Neutral word order places that constituent before the object, but syntactic licensing does not depend on being first.
Compound verbs and coordinated predicates
In a canonical compound verb, the final vector helps determine case licensing and carries the visible perfective agreement. With a transitive vector such as लेना in पढ़ लेना, the ordinary ergative pattern holds. Do not generalize this to every vector: an intransitive vector can yield a different subject-case pattern even when the lexical event is transitive.
माया ने पुरानी किताब पढ़ ली।
māyā ne purānī kitāb paṛh lī.
Maya finished reading the old book.
माया ने चिट्ठी लिखी और तस्वीरें भेजीं।
māyā ne ciṭṭhī likhī aur tasvīreṃ bhejīṃ.
Maya wrote the letter and sent the photographs.
One ने-marked subject can be shared across coordinated perfective predicates. Each conjunct calculates agreement with its own unmarked object: चिट्ठी लिखी, तस्वीरें भेजीं. A different embedded or coordinated subject begins a new licensing domain.
Finite clause boundaries
Each finite clause decides independently whether its subject takes ने.
मीना ने कहा कि अर्जुन घर पहुँचा।
mīnā ne kahā ki arjun ghar pahũcā.
Meena said that Arjun arrived home.
मीना ने कहा कि अर्जुन ने खाना बनाया।
mīnā ne kahā ki arjun ne khānā banāyā.
Meena said that Arjun cooked the food.
Matrix मीना ने कहा is transitive perfective in both. Embedded intransitive अर्जुन पहुँचा has no ने; embedded transitive perfective अर्जुन ने खाना बनाया does. The complementizer कि blocks any idea that matrix case can license the embedded subject.
Negation also remains local:
मीना ने नहीं कहा कि अर्जुन ने खाना बनाया।
mīnā ne nahīṃ kahā ki arjun ne khānā banāyā.
Meena did not say that Arjun cooked the food.
Here नहीं negates the matrix saying, but both ने phrases remain licensed by their own perfective transitive predicates.
Passive clauses do not use ergative ने for the patient
A passive promotes the patient into the unmarked agreement position. An expressed agent takes से or more formal के द्वारा, not ने.
चिट्ठी सीमा के द्वारा लिखी गई।
ciṭṭhī sīmā ke dvārā likhī gaī.
The letter was written by Seema. (formal)
Feminine चिट्ठी controls लिखी गई. This is structurally different from active सीमा ने चिट्ठी लिखी even though the real-world writer is identical.
Variable and lexically sensitive zones
Not every predicate fits a clean transitive/intransitive binary in every variety. Objectless or activity uses of खेलना, speech predicates such as बोलना, and some bodily-action predicates can show variation in ने according to lexical frame, agentive construal, dialect, and register. Compare standard intransitive free-play बच्चे खेले with agentive बच्चों ने खूब खेला, which is also common; an overt game object gives a clearer transitive frame: बच्चों ने हॉकी खेली.
छुट्टी के दिन बच्चे मैदान में खेले।
chuṭṭī ke din bacce maidān meṃ khele.
On the holiday, the children played in the field.
बच्चों ने आज शानदार हॉकी खेली।
baccoṃ ne āj śānadār hokī khelī.
The children played excellent hockey today.
प्रेस वार्ता में मंत्री ने बहुत कम बोला।
pres vārtā meṃ mantrī ne bahut kam bolā.
The minister spoke very little at the press conference.
Ordinary usage accepts agentive ने with some such predicates more readily than a rigid school rule predicts. Other speakers or contexts may prefer an unmarked subject for an activity construal. Learn the construction with its object frame and discourse context, and see optional and variable ने for the dedicated treatment.
Common Mistakes
❌ नेहा ने पहले रोज़ बाज़ार जाती थी।
Incorrect — past habitual जाती थी does not license ergative ने.
✅ नेहा पहले रोज़ बाज़ार जाती थी।
nehā pahle roz bāzār jātī thī.
Neha used to go to the market every day.
❌ रुख़साना ने देर से पहुँची।
Incorrect — पहुँचना is intransitive here; its unmarked subject controls पहुँची.
✅ रुख़साना देर से पहुँची।
ruxsānā der se pahũcī.
Rukhsana arrived late.
❌ मीरा ने रिपोर्ट भेज रही है।
Incorrect — a progressive transitive clause does not take perfective ने.
✅ मीरा रिपोर्ट भेज रही है।
mīrā riporṭ bhej rahī hai.
Meera is sending the report.
❌ रवि ने बहन को देखी।
Incorrect — बहन को is marked, so the perfective predicate must be default देखा.
✅ रवि ने बहन को देखा।
ravi ne bahan ko dekhā.
Ravi saw his sister.
❌ पत्र सीमा ने लिखी गई।
Incorrect — an active ergative subject cannot be inserted into a passive agreement frame.
✅ पत्र सीमा के द्वारा लिखा गया।
patr sīmā ke dvārā likhā gayā.
The letter was written by Seema. (formal)
Key Takeaways
ने canonically marks the agent of a transitive perfective predicate. It is not general past tense: habituals, progressives, futures, subjunctives, and ordinary intransitive perfectives lack it. Once present, ने blocks subject agreement; an unmarked object controls, or the predicate defaults if no controller remains. Each finite clause licenses ने separately, passives use a different agent phrase, and coordinated predicates calculate their own object agreement. Some lexical classes show genuine contextual and regional variation, which should not be erased by an absolute prescriptive slogan.
