Hindi uses default masculine singular morphology when a predicate has no eligible noun phrase from which to copy gender and number. The clearest case is a transitive perfective with a ने-marked agent and a को-marked object: महिलाओं ने रीना को बुलाया. Masculine singular बुलाया does not describe a masculine participant; it is the grammatical fallback produced by the absence of a controller.
Default is the last step in an agreement search
Do not begin by choosing masculine singular. First test possible controllers in the clause.
The full controller search is introduced in the agreement hierarchy overview; this page focuses on the points where that search finds no eligible noun phrase.
| Search | Outcome | Example |
|---|---|---|
| eligible unmarked subject | subject agreement | रीना आई |
| ने blocks subject; unmarked object available | object agreement | रीना ने चिट्ठी लिखी |
| ने blocks subject; को blocks object | default masculine singular | रीना ने मोहन को बुलाया |
दोनों बहनों ने पड़ोसी को जगाया।
donoṃ bahnoṃ ne paṛosī ko jagāyā.
Both sisters woke the neighbor.
प्रशिक्षिका ने दोनों खिलाड़ियों को समझाया।
praśikṣikā ne donoṃ khilāṛiyoṃ ko samjhāyā.
The trainer explained it to both players.
Feminine plural agents and objects appear in these sentences, but neither marked phrase can control. Default जगाया/समझाया therefore remains masculine singular.
Same form, different explanation
Surface देखा can be agreement or default. A controlled contrast reveals why.
तारा ने एक लड़का देखा।
tārā ne ek laṛkā dekhā.
Tara saw a boy.
तारा ने उस लड़की को देखा।
tārā ne us laṛkī ko dekhā.
Tara saw that girl.
In the first, unmarked masculine लड़का genuinely controls देखा. In the second, feminine लड़की को is ineligible and देखा is default. Morphology alone cannot distinguish them; case marking supplies the diagnostic.
Compare the feminine unmarked object:
तारा ने एक लड़की देखी।
tārā ne ek laṛkī dekhī.
Tara saw a girl.
Visible देखी confirms that object agreement is available when the object remains unmarked.
Person and number do not appear in the default
Once every controller is blocked, the speaker’s person, the agent’s number, and the object’s honorificity cannot select the predicate form.
मैंने उन्हें कल बुलाया।
maĩne unheṃ kal bulāyā.
I called them over yesterday.
हमने आपको बैठक में बुलाया था।
hamne āpko baiṭhak meṃ bulāyā thā.
We had invited you to the meeting. (respectful)
उन्होंने मुझे समय पर जगाया है।
unhoṃne mujhe samay par jagāyā hai.
They have woken me up on time.
All three use masculine singular बुलाया/जगाया, with था/है also masculine singular. Pronoun objects such as उन्हें, आपको, मुझे contain the को relation and are blocked.
Default across tense-bearing auxiliaries
The perfective layer establishes the controller configuration; a following auxiliary continues it.
| Predicate | Temporal interpretation |
|---|---|
| उसे बुलाया | simple perfective, normally past by context |
| उसे बुलाया है | present perfect/current relevance |
| उसे बुलाया था | past perfect/prior past |
प्रबंधक ने नई कर्मचारी को बुलाया है।
prabandhak ne naī karmacārī ko bulāyā hai.
The manager has called the new employee in. (female employee)
प्रबंधक ने नई कर्मचारी को पहले ही बुलाया था।
prabandhak ne naī karmacārī ko pahle hī bulāyā thā.
The manager had already called the new employee in.
Present है and past था do not independently seek agreement with कर्मचारी; the perfective predicate is already default.
Objectless transitive use
When a normally transitive predicate has no expressed or discourse-recoverable object, default masculine singular is common.
हमने रास्ते में जल्दी-जल्दी खाया।
hamne rāste meṃ jaldī-jaldī khāyā.
We ate quickly on the way.
No particular food item is available as a controller, so खाया is default. But omission does not always mean absence from the syntax: a highly salient object can be recovered and preserve its agreement.
ये पूरियाँ किसने बनाईं? — माया ने बनाईं।
ye pūriyā̃ kisne banāīṃ? — māyā ne banāīṃ.
Who made these puris? — Maya did.
The reply omits पूरियाँ, but feminine plural बनाईं retrieves it from the question. The contrast between generic objectless खाने and ellipsis is a constituency diagnostic: recoverable material remains represented in the discourse structure.
Clausal complements and quoted content
A finite कि clause and a quotation carry propositional content but normally do not act as gender-number controllers for the matrix predicate. Verbs such as कहना and बताना consequently appear in masculine singular when their other arguments are marked.
साक्षी ने कहा कि ट्रेन देर से आएगी।
sākṣī ne kahā ki ṭren der se āegī.
Sakshi said that the train would arrive late.
अधिकारियों ने बताया कि सड़क कल बंद रहेगी।
adhikāriyoṃ ne batāyā ki saṛak kal band rahegī.
The officials explained that the road would remain closed tomorrow.
Matrix कहा/बताया is default. Within each embedded clause, feminine ट्रेन/सड़क controls आएगी/रहेगी. Agreement cannot be assigned by the semantic prominence of the proposition.
Default outside the canonical ने + को pattern
The wider Hindi agreement system also uses masculine singular where a non-nominative experiencer construction has no eligible nominal controller or where a non-finite proposition functions as the relevant content. The exact pattern is construction-specific.
मुझे अब निकलना होगा।
mujhe ab nikalnā hogā.
I will have to leave now.
हमसे आज जल्दी चला नहीं गया।
hamse āj jaldī calā nahīṃ gayā.
We couldn’t manage to walk quickly today.
In the necessity clause, dative मुझे does not control; the infinitival proposition appears with masculine singular होगा. The ability-like passive has instrumental हमसे and no eligible controller, producing default चला गया. These constructions should be learned with their own case frames, not derived by adding ने.
Negation, questions, and focus
Operators affect meaning or scope but do not create an agreement controller.
क्या नीलू ने मेहमानों को नहीं बुलाया?
kyā nīlū ne mehmānoṃ ko nahīṃ bulāyā?
Did Neelu not invite the guests?
नीलू ने सिर्फ़ पुराने सदस्यों को बुलाया।
nīlū ne sirf purāne sadasyoṃ ko bulāyā.
Neelu invited only the old members.
Question marker क्या, negation नहीं, and focus सिर्फ़ leave बुलाया default because the same arguments remain case-marked.
Embedded clauses maintain separate defaults
रीता ने कहा कि बच्चों ने अध्यापिका को बुलाया था।
rītā ne kahā ki baccoṃ ne adhyāpikā ko bulāyā thā.
Rita said that the children had called the teacher over.
Matrix कहा is default because it takes a कि complement. Embedded बुलाया था is independently default because both बच्चों ने and अध्यापिका को are marked. One sentence can therefore contain separate defaults with separate licensing explanations.
Common Mistakes
❌ दोनों महिलाओं ने रोहन को बुलाईं।
Incorrect — neither महिलाओं ने nor रोहन को can control; use default बुलाया.
✅ दोनों महिलाओं ने रोहन को बुलाया।
donoṃ mahilāoṃ ne rohan ko bulāyā.
Both women called Rohan over.
❌ मैंने आपको चिट्ठी लिखा।
Incorrect — आपको is blocked, but unmarked feminine चिट्ठी controls लिखी.
✅ मैंने आपको चिट्ठी लिखी।
maĩne āpko ciṭṭhī likhī.
I wrote you a letter.
❌ सीमा ने कहा कि बैठक रद्द हो गया।
Incorrect — matrix default does not spread into the embedded clause; feminine बैठक controls हो गई.
✅ सीमा ने कहा कि बैठक रद्द हो गई।
sīmā ne kahā ki baiṭhak radd ho gaī.
Seema said that the meeting had been canceled.
❌ ये जलेबियाँ किसने बनाईं? — फ़ातिमा ने बनाया।
Incorrect in this elliptical reply — the omitted feminine plural antecedent still controls agreement.
✅ ये जलेबियाँ किसने बनाईं? — फ़ातिमा ने बनाईं।
ye jalebiyā̃ kisne banāīṃ? — fātimā ne banāīṃ.
Who made these jalebis? — Fatima did.
Key Takeaways
Default masculine singular is the fallback when no eligible agreement controller exists. It commonly follows the combination of a ने-marked agent and को-marked object, but also appears in objectless uses, clausal-complement predicates, and certain non-nominative constructions. A default form may look identical to genuine masculine singular agreement; case and constituency distinguish them. Ellipsis can preserve a recoverable controller, and every finite clause calculates its own agreement.
