Agreement with ergative subjects

In many transitive perfective clauses, Hindi marks the agentive subject with ने. That noun phrase remains the syntactic subject, but it no longer controls verbal agreement. The predicate instead agrees with an eligible unmarked object; if no such controller exists, it takes default masculine singular form. This split between subjecthood and agreement control is the key to the construction.

The neutral baseline

Compare an imperfective clause with a perfective one. In the habitual, unmarked feminine subject कविता controls पढ़ती है. In the perfective, कविता ने is case-marked and cannot control पढ़ी; unmarked feminine object कहानी does.

कविता हर रात कहानी पढ़ती है।

kavitā har rāt kahānī paṛhtī hai.

Kavita reads a story every night.

कविता ने कल पूरी कहानी पढ़ी।

kavitā ne kal pūrī kahānī paṛhī.

Kavita read the whole story yesterday.

The core perfective hierarchy is:

StepQuestionResult
1Does the transitive perfective agent bear ने?That subject is unavailable for agreement.
2Is there an unmarked direct object? It controls gender-number agreement.
3Is every possible controller case-marked or absent?Use masculine singular default.
💡
Do not ask “Who did it?” when choosing the perfective ending. First identify case marking; then look for an eligible unmarked controller.

The object reveals the agreement controller

Holding the subject constant while changing the object is a clean structural diagnostic.

आदिल ने नया लेख लिखा।

ādil ne nayā lekh likhā.

Adil wrote the new article.

आदिल ने नई चिट्ठी लिखी।

ādil ne naī ciṭṭhī likhī.

Adil wrote the new letter.

आदिल ने नए लेख लिखे।

ādil ne nae lekh likhe.

Adil wrote the new articles.

आदिल ने नई चिट्ठियाँ लिखीं।

ādil ne naī ciṭṭhiyā̃ likhīṃ.

Adil wrote the new letters.

Masculine singular लिखा, feminine singular लिखी, masculine plural लिखे, and standalone feminine plural लिखीं track the object. Adil’s gender and number have not changed. The same controller appears on a following auxiliary: चिट्ठी लिखी है, लेख लिखे हैं, चिट्ठियाँ लिखी थीं.

For the full object paradigm, see perfective object agreement.

A ने phrase is still a subject

Failure to control agreement does not turn the agent into an object or an optional adjunct. The ने phrase receives the agent role, normally precedes object material in neutral order, licenses subject-oriented अपना, and can be understood across coordinated predicates.

मीरा ने अपनी चाबी ढूँढ़ी।

mīrā ne apnī cābī ḍhū̃ṛhī.

Meera found her own key.

Feminine ढूँढ़ी agrees with चाबी. Yet अपनी naturally refers back to Meera, showing that मीरा ने is still the clause’s subject. Agreement is only one syntactic diagnostic; it is not the definition of subjecthood.

रीना और मोहन ने दरवाज़ा खोला और बत्तियाँ जलाईं।

rīnā aur mohan ne darvāzā kholā aur battiyā̃ jalāīṃ.

Reena and Mohan opened the door and turned on the lights.

The coordinated subject shares one ने phrase. Each predicate nevertheless agrees locally with its own object: masculine दरवाज़ा खोला, feminine plural बत्तियाँ जलाईं.

💡
Subject properties and agreement can point to different phrases. मीरा ने is the subject, while चाबी is the agreement controller.

When the object bears को

An object marked by को cannot control agreement. If the subject already bears ने, no eligible controller remains and the predicate defaults to masculine singular.

नंदिता ने उस लड़की को बुलाया।

nanditā ne us laṛkī ko bulāyā.

Nandita called that girl over.

नंदिता ने उन लड़कियों को बुलाया।

nanditā ne un laṛkiyoṃ ko bulāyā.

Nandita called those girls over.

Neither feminine singular nor feminine plural features appear on बुलाया. This is not agreement with an unspoken masculine noun; it is the default form. Object marking must be chosen from animacy, specificity, definiteness, lexical semantics, and discourse—not removed merely to create visible agreement.

Negation and focus do not repair blocked agreement

Negation changes truth conditions, not the case-and-agreement hierarchy. Focus particles likewise identify alternatives without making a marked phrase eligible.

समीरा ने रिपोर्ट नहीं भेजी।

samīrā ne riporṭ nahīṃ bhejī.

Sameera did not send the report.

समीरा ने रिपोर्ट ही भेजी, पूरा दस्तावेज़ नहीं।

samīrā ne riporṭ hī bhejī, pūrā dastāvez nahīṃ.

Sameera sent only the report, not the whole document.

Feminine रिपोर्ट controls भेजी in both clauses. नहीं and focus ही do not alter eligibility. With रिपोर्ट को, the form would instead be default भेजा, provided that marked-object construal was pragmatically licensed.

Compound predicates preserve the structural relation

In a compound verb, the final vector carries visible perfective agreement. The ने-marked subject remains unavailable, so an unmarked object controls the vector.

तारा ने पुरानी किताब पढ़ ली।

tārā ne purānī kitāb paṛh lī.

Tara finished reading the old book.

तारा ने दोनों लेख लिख दिए।

tārā ne donoṃ lekh likh die.

Tara went ahead and wrote both articles.

Feminine किताब selects ली; masculine plural लेख selects दिए. The vectors also add event-structure meaning, so they are not empty agreement carriers.

Agreement stops at a finite clause boundary

Each finite clause calculates agreement independently. A matrix ergative subject cannot control a predicate inside a कि complement, and an embedded noun cannot normally control the matrix verb across that boundary.

वंदना ने कहा कि उसकी बहन घर पहुँच गई है।

vandanā ne kahā ki uskī bahan ghar pahũc gaī hai.

Vandana said that her sister had arrived home.

Matrix कहा is masculine singular because the verb takes a clausal complement rather than an agreeing noun object. Inside the embedded clause, feminine बहन controls पहुँच गई है. The complementizer कि visibly marks the boundary between the two agreement domains.

वंदना ने बताया कि बच्चों ने सारी खिड़कियाँ बंद की थीं।

vandanā ne batāyā ki baccoṃ ne sārī khiṛkiyā̃ band kī thīṃ.

Vandana explained that the children had closed all the windows.

The matrix clause has default बताया. The embedded clause has its own ने-marked subject, unmarked feminine plural object, and की थीं agreement chain. Semantic importance cannot override these local syntactic domains.

Pronoun subjects and the ergative forms

Pronouns fuse an oblique stem with ने: मैंने, हमने, तुमने, आपने, इसने, उसने, इन्होंने, उन्होंने. Their person and honorific features still do not control a perfective predicate once ने is present.

हमने वह तस्वीर देखी है।

hamne vah tasvīr dekhī hai.

We have seen that photograph.

आपने सही जवाब चुना है।

āpne sahī javāb cunā hai.

You have chosen the correct answer. (respectful)

Feminine तस्वीर controls देखी है; masculine जवाब controls चुना है. Respectful आप does not force plural चुने हैं through ergative आपने.

Common Mistakes

❌ रजनी ने नया प्रस्ताव लिखी।

Incorrect — the ने-marked feminine subject cannot control agreement; masculine प्रस्ताव requires लिखा.

✅ रजनी ने नया प्रस्ताव लिखा।

rajnī ne nayā prastāv likhā.

Rajni wrote the new proposal.

❌ लड़कों ने चिट्ठी लिखा।

Incorrect — plural लड़कों ने is blocked; feminine चिट्ठी controls लिखी.

✅ लड़कों ने चिट्ठी लिखी।

laṛkoṃ ne ciṭṭhī likhī.

The boys wrote the letter.

❌ सुमन ने उन बच्चियों को बुलाईं।

Incorrect — बच्चियों को cannot control agreement, so the predicate is default masculine singular.

✅ सुमन ने उन बच्चियों को बुलाया।

suman ne un bacciyoṃ ko bulāyā.

Suman called those girls over.

❌ राधा ने कहा कि उसकी बेटी आ गया।

Incorrect — agreement is calculated inside the embedded clause, where feminine बेटी controls आ गई.

✅ राधा ने कहा कि उसकी बेटी आ गई।

rādhā ne kahā ki uskī beṭī ā gaī.

Radha said that her daughter had arrived.

Key Takeaways

A ने-marked noun phrase remains the syntactic subject but cannot control perfective agreement. An eligible unmarked object controls gender and number; a को-marked or absent object yields masculine singular default. Negation and focus do not change this hierarchy. Reflexive binding confirms subjecthood, while agreement morphology identifies a different controller. Each finite clause has its own agreement domain, so matrix and embedded predicates must be calculated separately.
