बोलना bolnā: to speak

बोलना centers on the activity or manner of speaking: speaking a language, speaking loudly, or beginning to speak. It can be intransitive (वह धीरे बोला) or take speech content such as a language or words (उसने हिंदी बोली). That alternation affects perfective ने marking and agreement.

Languages normally appear without a postposition: हिंदी बोलना, तमिल बोलना. Manner is expressed with an adverbial: धीरे बोलना, साफ़ बोलना, ज़ोर से बोलना. An interlocutor can appear with से: किसी से बात करना/बोलना, though बात करना is often more neutral for “talk with.”

सारा अपने घर में पंजाबी और बाहर हिंदी बोलती है।

sārā apne ghar meṃ pañjābī aur bāhar hindī boltī hai.

Sara speaks Punjabi at home and Hindi outside.

कृपया थोड़ा धीरे बोलिए।

kripyā thoṛā dhīre bolie.

Please speak a little more slowly.

💡
Use बोलना when the focus is on speaking as an activity, language, voice, or manner. Use कहना when the focus is on a message, quotation, or proposition that someone says.

एक मिनट रुकिए, अभी ग्राहक बोल रहे हैं।

ek minaṭ rukie, abhī grāhak bol rahe haiṃ.

Wait a minute; the customer is speaking right now. (honorific)

The lexical stem, aspectual participle, and auxiliary remain distinct layers. English speaks and is speaking differ by auxiliary choice; Hindi marks the aspect before final है/हैं.

Two perfective alignments

When बोलना simply denotes speaking or an utterance without an object, it behaves intransitively: the unmarked speaker controls agreement and no ने appears. With a clear content object such as a language, truth, lie, or words, transitive perfective ने is standard and the unmarked object controls agreement.

सवाल सुनकर नेहा पहली बार बोली।

savāl sunkar nehā pahlī bār bolī.

After hearing the question, Neha spoke for the first time.

नेहा ने पूरी पंक्ति बिना रुके बोली।

nehā ne pūrī paṅkti binā ruke bolī.

Neha said the whole line without pausing.

उसने ग़ुस्से में कुछ कठोर शब्द बोले।

usne ġusse meṃ kuch kaṭhor śabd bole.

They said some harsh words in anger.

The first बोली agrees with the speaker; the second agrees with feminine कविता; plural शब्द gives बोले. This lexical alternation is why a blanket rule either requiring or banning ने with बोलना is inaccurate.

I'll speak in the meeting only when my turn comes. (female speaker)

सब लोग एक-एक करके बोलें।

sab log ek-ek karke boleṃ.

Everyone should speak one at a time.

Imperatives are intimate बोल, familiar बोलो, and respectful बोलिए. Negative commands use मत, while a softer turn-taking request may use आप बोलिए “Please go ahead.”

Participles and causative relations

Common non-finite forms include बोलता, बोला, बोलते हुए, बोलकर, oblique बोलने, and बोलने वाला.

The historical causative बुलाना is synchronically lexicalized as “call/summon/invite,” not a general-purpose “make speak.” बुलवाना means arrange for someone to be called. To cause or permit speech, ordinary Hindi often uses बोलने को कहना, बोलने देना, or a context-specific verb.

प्रबंधक ने मुझे कल फिर बुलाया है।

prabandhak ne mujhe kal phir bulāyā hai.

The manager has asked me to come in again tomorrow.

बच्चे को भी बोलने दीजिए।

bacce ko bhī bolne dījie.

Please let the child speak too.

बोल पड़ना and other compound behavior

बोल पड़ना presents speech as sudden, unplanned, or difficult to suppress. The vector पड़ना contributes abrupt onset rather than physical falling.

सब चुप थे, लेकिन रवि अचानक बोल पड़ा।

sab cup the, lekin ravi acānak bol paṛā.

Everyone was silent, but Ravi suddenly spoke up.

Feminine and plural subjects give बोल पड़ी, बोल पड़े, बोल पड़ीं. Other compounds include बोल देना, which can present words as blurted out or decisively uttered, and बोल उठना, a literary or narrative way to mark sudden speech. Vector choice changes event presentation and is not freely interchangeable.

An idiomatic colloquial expression is बोलती बंद हो जाना, literally “one's speaking gets shut,” meaning to be left speechless (informal).

जवाब सुनकर उसकी बोलती बंद हो गई।

javāb sunkar uskī boltī band ho gaī.

The reply left them speechless. (informal)

✅ वह हिंदी बोलती है।

vah hindī boltī hai.

She speaks Hindi.

❌ रीना धीरे बोला।

Incorrect — intransitive perfective बोलना agrees with feminine रीना.

✅ रीना धीरे बोली।

rīnā dhīre bolī.

Reena spoke softly.

❌ उसने दो भाषाएँ बोला।

Incorrect — the transitive content object is plural.

✅ उसने दो भाषाएँ बोलीं।

usne do bhāṣāẽ bolīṃ.

They spoke two languages.

❌ आप थोड़ा साफ़ बोलो।

āp thoṛā sāf bolie.

Please speak a little more clearly. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

बोलना is regular in form but alternates in argument structure. Intransitive perfective speaking has no ने and agrees with the speaker; a clear speech-content object gives transitive ने and object agreement. Learn language and manner complements without English-style prepositions, and recognize बोल पड़ना as a sudden-onset compound rather than literal “fall speaking.”
