Conversation does not arrive as polished written sentences. Speakers claim a turn, pause while planning it, show that they are listening, overlap, mishear, and repair what was said. Hindi has no single “turn-taking grammar,” but it has recurrent resources—तो, अच्छा, हाँ, जी, देखिए, मतलब, यानी, नहीं, address forms, incomplete syntax, and intonation—that make those actions recognizable.
These forms are not interchangeable fillers. A listener's quiet हाँ may mean “I am following,” not “I agree”; जी? may answer a summons; मतलब... can hold the floor or reformulate content; and नहीं, मेरा मतलब... replaces an earlier formulation rather than negating the entire conversation. Natural participation requires tracking the action each item performs. The related response system is mapped in हाँ, जी, नहीं जी, and responsive जी.
Entering, holding, and yielding a turn
A speaker can enter after a possible completion with अच्छा, तो, देखिए, an address term, or a direct answer. The choice frames the coming turn.
अच्छा, अब मेरी बात सुनिए।
acchā, ab merī bāt sunie.
All right, now please hear me out. (respectful; claims the next turn)
तो मेरा सुझाव यह है कि हम तारीख़ बदल दें।
to merā sujhāv yah hai ki ham tārīx badal deṃ.
So my suggestion is that we change the date. (neutral/professional)
अच्छा here does not evaluate something as “good”; it marks a transition. Turn-initial तो derives a next step from previous talk. देखिए “look/consider this” can preface an explanation (neutral to formal), but repeated or sharply stressed it may sound admonishing.
While searching for a word, speakers use a pause, vowel lengthening, वो..., मतलब..., क्या कहते हैं..., or a syntactically incomplete phrase. These are normal planning devices (informal/conversational), not grammar failures.
वो... कल वाली फ़ाइल कहाँ रखी है?
vo... kal vālī fāil kahā̃ rakhī hai?
Um... where was yesterday's file put? (conversational hesitation)
हमें कोई सस्ता—मतलब, कम ख़र्च वाला विकल्प चाहिए।
hameṃ koī sastā—matlab, kam xarc vālā vikalp cāhie.
We need a cheap—I mean, a lower-cost option.
The abandoned adjective सस्ता is replaced by the less negatively loaded phrase कम ख़र्च वाला. This is a lexical repair, not simple repetition.
Syntax itself can project that more is coming. After अगर हम पहले आँकड़े देख लें... a listener expects a result clause; a level or continuing contour helps the speaker hold the floor. After a completed proposal with a settling contour, the turn becomes available. These cues vary across speakers and regions; no punctuation mark mechanically assigns the next speaker.
Listener responses do not all mean agreement
Brief responses such as हूँ, हाँ, जी, अच्छा, and ठीक can show attention while the other person continues. Linguists often call these backchannels. Their force depends on timing and contour.
फिर हम स्टेशन पहुँचे—हाँ—और वहाँ पता चला कि ट्रेन जा चुकी थी।
phir ham sṭeśan pahũce—hā̃—aur vahā̃ patā calā ki ṭren jā cukī thī.
Then we reached the station—uh-huh—and found that the train had already left.
The embedded हाँ acknowledges receipt; it need not endorse any opinion. In a respectful service exchange, जी can perform the same listening work.
ग्राहक: पहले पुराने पते पर पार्सल गया था... — कर्मचारी: जी। — ग्राहक: इसलिए इस बार नया पता लिख दीजिए।
grāhak: pahle purāne pate par pārsal gayā thā... — karmcārī: jī. — grāhak: islie is bār nayā patā likh dījie.
Customer: Earlier the parcel went to the old address... — Employee: I see. — Customer: So please enter the new address this time.
The employee's जी says “I am listening,” not “I accept liability.” For explicit agreement, use a fuller response such as जी, आपकी बात सही है or हाँ, मैं सहमत हूँ.
Taking a turn without making the overlap hostile
Overlap is not always interruption: speakers may jointly complete a familiar point, show enthusiasm, or begin at the same projected boundary. When the overlap obstructs the current speaker, Hindi offers explicit turn-management expressions.
माफ़ कीजिए, मैं अपनी बात पूरी कर लूँ?
māf kījie, maĩ apnī bāt pūrī kar lū̃?
Excuse me, may I finish what I was saying? (formal/respectful)
एक सेकंड, पहले मुझे यह पूरा करने दो।
ek sekaṇḍ, pahle mujhe yah pūrā karne do.
One second—let me finish this first. (familiar)
The first uses an apology formula, a question, and respectful morphology. The second is direct but ordinary among peers. चुप रहो “be quiet” performs a different and much stronger act; adding जी or प्लीज़ does not turn it into neutral floor management.
To enter politely before a full completion, announce the limited interruption:
क्षमा कीजिए, बीच में एक छोटी-सी बात जोड़ सकता हूँ?
kṣamā kījie, bīc meṃ ek choṭī-sī bāt joṛ saktā hū̃?
Excuse me, may I add one small point here? (formal; male speaker)
छोटी-सी limits the projected size of the intervention. The speaker should then actually keep it brief; a minimizer followed by a long takeover can sound manipulative.
Self-repair: replacing form, reference, or stance
Self-repair normally has three parts: an interruption point, a repair marker, and a replacement. Common markers include मतलब “I mean,” यानी “that is,” नहीं “no/rather,” and मेरा मतलब है “what I mean is.”
बैठक गुरुवार को—नहीं, माफ़ कीजिए—शुक्रवार को है।
baiṭhak guruvār ko—nahīṃ, māf kījie—śukravār ko hai.
The meeting is on Thursday—no, sorry—on Friday.
वह नाराज़ नहीं थे; मेरा मतलब है, वे निराश ज़रूर थे।
vah nārāz nahīṃ the; merā matlab hai, ve nirāś zarūr the.
He wasn't angry; what I mean is, he was certainly disappointed. (respectful reference)
The first corrects a factual item. The second recalibrates stance: नाराज़ is withdrawn and निराश substituted, while ज़रूर preserves a strong commitment. Respectful थे remains aligned with the person being discussed.
Repair can also correct social calibration:
तुम कल आओ—माफ़ कीजिए, आप कल आइएगा।
tum kal āo—māf kījie, āp kal āiegā.
Come tomorrow—sorry, please come tomorrow. (repair from familiar to respectful address)
The repair must replace both pronoun and predicate. Changing only तुम to आप while retaining आओ leaves a mixed address bundle.
Other-initiated repair: locating the trouble
When a listener did not hear or understand, क्या? is possible among intimates but can sound abrupt elsewhere. A more precise question identifies what needs repair.
माफ़ कीजिए, आपने आख़िरी शब्द क्या कहा?
māf kījie, āpne āxirī śabd kyā kahā?
Sorry, what was the last word you said? (respectful)
आपने कहा कि फ़ाइल किसे भेजनी है?
āpne kahā ki fāil kise bhejnī hai?
Who did you say the file should be sent to? (targeted clarification)
रवि को भेजनी है या रानी को?
ravi ko bhejnī hai yā rānī ko?
Should it be sent to Ravi or to Rani? (candidate understanding)
The first requests repetition; the second isolates a missing referent; the third proposes alternatives and lets the original speaker confirm quickly. English-speaking learners often overuse bare What?; Hindi likewise permits क्या?, but माफ़ कीजिए, फिर से कहिएगा, or a targeted question better fits an unfamiliar or professional relationship.
A two-turn professional repair
Manager: If you send the draft today, we will start work tomorrow. — Colleague: Excuse me, by ‘today’ do you mean by this evening or before the office closes?
The colleague does not pretend the deadline is understood. Quoting आज identifies the trouble source, आपका मतलब attributes intended meaning respectfully, and the alternatives make the repair efficient.
A familiar version can be shorter:
तूने कहा था शाम को मिलेंगे। — हाँ, मेरा मतलब सात बजे के बाद था।
tūne kahā thā śām ko mileṅge. — hā̃, merā matlab sāt baje ke bād thā.
You said we'd meet in the evening. — Yes, I meant after seven. (intimate)
Repairing an abrupt interruption
If a speaker enters with नहीं, आप ग़लत हैं, the turn attacks the person before locating the problem. A repair can acknowledge the overlap and narrow the disagreement.
नहीं, आप ग़लत हैं—एक मिनट।
nahīṃ, āp ġalat haiṃ—ek minaṭ.
No, you're wrong—one minute. (grammatical but confrontational)
माफ़ कीजिए, मैं बीच में बोल रहा हूँ, लेकिन तारीख़ वाले हिस्से पर एक बात स्पष्ट कर दूँ?
māf kījie, maĩ bīc meṃ bol rahā hū̃, lekin tārīx vāle hisse par ek bāt spaṣṭ kar dū̃?
Sorry to interrupt, but may I clarify one point about the date? (male speaker; professional repair)
The repair acknowledges the interruption, limits its scope, and asks for the floor. Politeness is distributed across those moves; माफ़ कीजिए alone would not neutralize a broad accusation.
Common Mistakes
Reading every listener हाँ as agreement
❌ आपने बीच में ‘हाँ’ कहा था, इसलिए आपने प्रस्ताव मान लिया था।
Pragmatically invalid inference—हाँ during another person's extended turn may only display continued attention.
✅ आपने मेरी बात सुनी; अब कृपया बताइए कि आप प्रस्ताव से सहमत हैं या नहीं।
āpne merī bāt sunī; ab kripyā batāie ki āp prastāv se sahmat haiṃ yā nahīṃ.
You heard me; now please say whether you agree with the proposal.
Repairing an honorific pronoun but not the verb
❌ माफ़ कीजिए, आप कल आओ।
Mismatched repair in the intended respectful reading—आप still appears with familiar आओ.
✅ माफ़ कीजिए, आप कल आइएगा।
māf kījie, āp kal āiegā.
Sorry—please come tomorrow. (respectful)
Using bare क्या? in every setting
❌ क्या? फिर बोलो।
Too abrupt for an unfamiliar senior or formal exchange; both the repair initiator and imperative are familiar.
✅ माफ़ कीजिए, कृपया आख़िरी बात फिर से कहिएगा।
māf kījie, kripyā āxirī bāt phir se kahiegā.
Sorry, please say the last point again. (formal/respectful)
Treating every pause as the end of a turn
❌ अगर हम कल तक रुकें... — ठीक है, अब मेरी बात सुनो।
Intrusive if the first speaker's conditional and continuing contour project an unfinished result clause.
✅ अगर हम कल तक रुकें, तो शायद पूरी जानकारी मिल जाए। — हाँ, यह ठीक रहेगा।
agar ham kal tak rukeṃ, to śāyad pūrī jānkārī mil jāe. — hā̃, yah ṭhīk rahegā.
If we wait until tomorrow, perhaps we will get the full information. — Yes, that should be fine.
Key Takeaways
Hindi turn management combines grammar, timing, contour, and social relationship. अच्छा and turn-initial तो can launch a next step; incomplete syntax and मतलब can hold the floor; हाँ/जी may acknowledge without agreeing; and नहीं, मतलब, यानी, मेरा मतलब organize self-repair. Clarification is strongest when it locates the exact trouble source. When an interruption or address choice is miscalibrated, repair the whole social action—pronoun, predicate, scope, and turn format—not merely one polite word.
