Hindi speakers can disagree with a proposition directly—मैं इस बात से सहमत नहीं हूँ “I do not agree with this”—but social calibration determines whether that directness is constructive. A common strategy is to acknowledge part of the other person's position before introducing a limit: आपकी बात सही है, लेकिन.... This is not empty decoration. The first clause establishes shared ground; the contrast clause locates the disagreement precisely.
Agreement is equally nuanced. हाँ, जी, ठीक है, सही कहा, and मैं सहमत हूँ do not all assert the same thing. A listener may use हाँ merely to show “I am following,” while ठीक है may accept a plan without endorsing the reasoning behind it.
The clause-linking choices introduced here are treated systematically in लेकिन, मगर, and परन्तु and the concessive constructions guide.
Different kinds of “yes”
Use a response that matches what is being accepted: a fact, an evaluation, a proposal, or simply the current speaker's turn.
| Response | Usual contribution | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| हाँ hā̃ | yes; also a listening signal | neutral/familiar |
| जी jī / जी हाँ jī hā̃ | respectful acknowledgment or affirmative answer | polite/respectful |
| बिल्कुल bilkul | strong agreement: “absolutely” | neutral |
| सही कहा sahī kahā | endorses what was just said | conversational |
| ठीक है ṭhīk hai | accepts a proposal or closes negotiation | neutral |
| एक हद तक ek had tak | partial agreement with an expected qualification | analytical/professional |
यह रास्ता शाम को बहुत व्यस्त रहता है। — हाँ, मैंने भी देखा है।
yah rāstā śām ko bahut vyast rahtā hai. — hā̃, maĩne bhī dekhā hai.
This road stays very busy in the evening. — Yes, I've noticed that too.
तो बैठक दस बजे रख लें? — ठीक है, मैं सबको बता देता हूँ।
to baiṭhak das baje rakh leṃ? — ṭhīk hai, maĩ sabko batā detā hū̃.
So shall we schedule the meeting for ten? — All right, I'll tell everyone. (male second speaker)
बजट कम है, इसलिए पहले ज़रूरी काम होना चाहिए। — बिल्कुल, प्राथमिकताएँ तय करनी होंगी।
bajaṭ kam hai, islie pahle zarūrī kām honā cāhie. — bilkul, prāthmiktāeṃ tay karnī hoṅgī.
The budget is limited, so essential work should come first. — Absolutely; we'll have to set priorities.
In the second exchange, ठीक है accepts the ten-o'clock arrangement. It does not necessarily mean “your claim is true.” English learners who translate every yes as हाँ lose this difference.
Direct disagreement: grammatical and sometimes necessary
The neutral explicit construction is X से सहमत होना “to agree with X.” The complement takes से, whether X is a person or a proposition: आपसे सहमत हूँ, इस बात से सहमत हूँ. असहमत होना is more compact and often sounds somewhat formal or deliberative.
मैं आपकी इस बात से सहमत नहीं हूँ कि हमें योजना रोक देनी चाहिए।
maĩ āpkī is bāt se sahmat nahīṃ hū̃ ki hameṃ yojnā rok denī cāhie.
I do not agree with your view that we should stop the plan.
समिति के निष्कर्ष से मैं असहमत हूँ।
samiti ke niṣkarṣ se maĩ asahmat hū̃.
I disagree with the committee's conclusion. (formal)
नहीं, अभी उस तार को मत छूना—उसमें करंट हो सकता है।
nahīṃ, abhī us tār ko mat chūnā—usmeṃ karaṇṭ ho saktā hai.
No, don't touch that wire—it may be live.
Softening is not always virtuous. In an emergency, a direct negative plus the reason is responsible. In a meeting among equals, explicit disagreement can also be clearer and fairer than vague assent. The goal is to direct opposition toward the proposition rather than attack the person.
Build common ground before the contrast
The pattern X तो सही है, लेकिन Y grants X while presenting Y as the decisive limitation. Focus तो marks the conceded element; it does not itself mean “but.” लेकिन, मगर, or conversational पर introduces the contrast.
आपकी बात तो सही है, लेकिन अभी हमारे पास पूरे आँकड़े नहीं हैं।
āpkī bāt to sahī hai, lekin abhī hamāre pās pūre ā̃kṛe nahīṃ haiṃ.
Your point is valid, but we do not yet have complete data.
विचार अच्छा है, मगर इसे लागू करने में कितना समय लगेगा?
vicār acchā hai, magar ise lāgū karne meṃ kitnā samay lagegā?
The idea is good, but how long will it take to implement?
मैं आपकी चिंता समझ रही हूँ। फिर भी, इस समय दरवाज़ा बंद रखना ज़रूरी है।
maĩ āpkī cintā samajh rahī hū̃. phir bhī, is samay darvāzā band rakhnā zarūrī hai.
I understand your concern. Even so, it is necessary to keep the door closed right now. (female speaker)
The acknowledgment must be truthful. Formulaically saying आपकी बात सही है and then rejecting every part of it can sound manipulative. If only the concern is valid, say exactly that: आपकी चिंता समझ में आती है.
Make the stance personal, provisional, or scoped
मुझे लगता है presents a judgment as the speaker's assessment. शायद reduces certainty. मेरे अनुभव में and जहाँ तक... restrict the claim to evidence or scope. These constructions soften disagreement by making less total a claim, not by making it unintelligible.
मुझे लगता है कि हम इस ख़र्च को थोड़ा और कम कर सकते हैं।
mujhe lagtā hai ki ham is xarc ko thoṛā aur kam kar sakte haiṃ.
I think we can reduce this expense a little further.
शायद समस्या नियम में नहीं, उसे लागू करने के तरीक़े में है।
śāyad samasyā niyam meṃ nahīṃ, use lāgū karne ke tarīqe meṃ hai.
Perhaps the problem is not the rule but the way it is implemented.
जहाँ तक ग्राहक सहायता का सवाल है, मेरा अनुभव थोड़ा अलग रहा है।
jahā̃ tak grāhak sahāyatā kā savāl hai, merā anubhav thoṛā alag rahā hai.
As far as customer support is concerned, my experience has been somewhat different.
थोड़ा अलग often performs pragmatic understatement: the difference may be substantial, but the phrase opens space for discussion. It should not be used when the hearer needs an unambiguous rejection, such as consent, safety, or legal authorization.
Questions that invite reconsideration
A question can expose a concern without asserting that the other person is wrong. क्या ऐसा हो सकता है कि...? raises a possibility. कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं कि...? tentatively checks a potentially troubling explanation. A genuinely open contour matters; a pointed rhetorical contour can make the same syntax accusatory.
क्या ऐसा हो सकता है कि संदेश सही पते पर गया ही न हो?
kyā aisā ho saktā hai ki sandeś sahī pate par gayā hī na ho?
Could it be that the message never went to the correct address?
कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं कि हम दो अलग संस्करण देख रहे हैं?
kahīṃ aisā to nahīṃ ki ham do alag sanskaraṇ dekh rahe haiṃ?
Is it possible that we're looking at two different versions?
Focus ही in the first example rejects the assumed occurrence itself: perhaps it did not reach that address at all. तो in the second flags the hypothesis as newly relevant. Neither particle simply translates English perhaps.
Formal and familiar exchanges
A respectful workplace disagreement maintains honorific forms and moves from acknowledgment to evidence:
मुझे लगता है कि हमें आज ही घोषणा कर देनी चाहिए। — मैं समझता हूँ कि आपको जल्दी है, लेकिन क्या हम कानूनी सलाह आने तक रुक सकते हैं?
mujhe lagtā hai ki hameṃ āj hī ghoṣṇā kar denī cāhie. — maĩ samajhtā hū̃ ki āpko jaldī hai, lekin kyā ham qānūnī salāh āne tak ruk sakte haiṃ?
I think we should make the announcement today. — I understand that it is urgent for you, but can we wait until the legal advice arrives? (male second speaker; formal)
Friends can disagree more compactly and use यार, though the explanation still helps:
चलो, फ़िल्म छोड़कर घर चलते हैं। — नहीं यार, इतनी दूर आए हैं तो दस मिनट और रुकते हैं।
calo, film choṛkar ghar calte haiṃ. — nahīṃ yār, itnī dūr āe haiṃ to das minaṭ aur rukte haiṃ.
Let's skip the film and go home. — No, come on; we've come this far, so let's wait another ten minutes. (informal)
Intonation and the force of short responses
अच्छा with a falling contour may acknowledge new information; with a sharp rise, अच्छा? can challenge it: “Really?” ठीक है said evenly accepts, while clipped ठीक है! may signal reluctant closure or irritation. Text messages lack much of this prosody, so an explanation or a softener can prevent misreading.
अच्छा? मुझे तो बताया गया था कि दफ़्तर खुला रहेगा।
acchā? mujhe to batāyā gayā thā ki daftar khulā rahegā.
Really? I was told the office would remain open. (surprised/challenging)
Here तो contrasts the speaker's information with the new claim. A bare गलत would be shorter but more confrontational.
Repairing an attack on the person
English You're wrong is grammatically translatable as आप गलत हैं, but in collaborative disagreement Hindi often targets बात, निष्कर्ष, or जानकारी instead. The repair preserves the disagreement while narrowing it.
आप गलत हैं; आपको बाज़ार की समझ नहीं है।
āp galat haiṃ; āpko bāzār kī samajh nahīṃ hai.
You are wrong; you don't understand the market. (direct and personally confrontational)
मुझे लगता है कि इस निष्कर्ष में एक बात छूट रही है: पिछले महीने कीमतें बदली थीं।
mujhe lagtā hai ki is niṣkarṣ meṃ ek bāt chūṭ rahī hai: pichle mahīne kīmateṃ badlī thīṃ.
I think this conclusion overlooks one point: prices changed last month.
Adding जी to the first sentence would not solve its interpersonal problem. The repair changes the target, evidence, and stance.
Common Mistakes
Translating English “agree with” as साथ
❌ मैं आपके साथ सहमत हूँ।
Nonstandard for intellectual agreement—Hindi uses से with सहमत.
✅ मैं आपसे सहमत हूँ।
maĩ āpse sahmat hū̃.
I agree with you.
Treating असहमत as a transitive verb
❌ मैं इस फ़ैसले को असहमत करता हूँ।
Incorrect—असहमत is a predicate used with होना, and its complement takes से.
✅ मैं इस फ़ैसले से असहमत हूँ।
maĩ is faisle se asahmat hū̃.
I disagree with this decision. (formal)
Attacking the person instead of locating the disputed claim
✅ हाँ, लेकिन आप बिल्कुल गलत हैं।
hā̃, lekin āp bilkul galat haiṃ.
Yes, but you are completely wrong. (grammatical but needlessly personal in an ordinary collaborative discussion)
✅ आपकी चिंता सही है, लेकिन इस आँकड़े की व्याख्या मुझे ठीक नहीं लगती।
āpkī cintā sahī hai, lekin is ā̃kṛe kī vyākhyā mujhe ṭhīk nahīṃ lagtī.
Your concern is valid, but I don't think this interpretation of the figure is right.
Softening until the answer becomes misleading
❌ शायद मैं पूरी तरह सहमत न हो पाऊँ, पर देखेंगे।
Too vague when a clear decision is required; the hearer cannot tell whether the proposal is accepted.
✅ मैं इस प्रस्ताव से सहमत नहीं हूँ, इसलिए इसे मंज़ूरी नहीं दे सकता।
maĩ is prastāv se sahmat nahīṃ hū̃, islie ise manzūrī nahīṃ de saktā.
I do not agree with this proposal, so I cannot approve it. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Distinguish acknowledgment, factual agreement, and acceptance of a proposal. Use से with सहमत/असहमत, and soften disagreement by granting genuine common ground, owning the stance, limiting its scope, or inviting reconsideration. Directness remains appropriate when clarity or safety matters. Politeness emerges from what is targeted, how evidence is framed, honorific agreement, particles, and intonation—not from attaching one respectful word to a personal attack.
