Giving advice without sounding commanding

Advice tells another person what course of action would benefit them, so even a grammatically polite sentence can threaten their sense of autonomy. Hindi speakers manage that risk by choosing among चाहिए “should,” suggestion questions such as क्यों न...?, option-giving frames such as आप चाहें तो..., conditional judgments, and direct imperatives. The best form depends on expertise, urgency, relationship, and whether the listener actually invited advice.

English speakers often concentrate on avoiding the imperative. Hindi has more than one source of force: तुम्हें यह करना चाहिए is not an imperative, yet it may sound more judgmental than a warm यह करके देखो from a trusted friend. The form and agreement of the central predicate are explained on the dedicated चाहिए page.

चाहिए: a judgment of advisability

The standard advice pattern is person + को + infinitive + चाहिए. The dative person is the one for whom the action is advisable; present चाहिए remains invariant.

तुम्हें आज काम छोड़कर थोड़ा आराम करना चाहिए।

tumheṃ āj kām choṛkar thoṛā ārām karnā cāhie.

You should stop working and rest a little today. (familiar, neutral advice)

आपको यह गोली खाना खाने के बाद लेनी चाहिए।

āpko yah golī khānā khāne ke bād lenī cāhie.

You should take this pill after eating. (respectful; appropriate professional advice)

हमें जवाब देने से पहले पूरी रिपोर्ट पढ़नी चाहिए।

hameṃ javāb dene se pahle pūrī riporṭ paṛhnī cāhie.

We should read the full report before responding. (inclusive workplace advice)

Using हमें rather than आपको can distribute responsibility and reduce personal criticism when the speaker is genuinely included. It should not be used deceptively if only the listener is expected to change.

The force of चाहिए is contextual. A doctor has licensed expertise; a friend commenting on a private life decision does not. Negated नहीं ... चाहिए can sound morally corrective: तुम्हें ऐसा नहीं कहना चाहिए था “you should not have said that” evaluates past conduct, not merely a practical option.

💡
चाहिए packages advice as a norm or reasoned judgment. To emphasize that the listener retains the choice, use चाहें तो, अगर ठीक लगे, or a possibility form instead.

चाहें तो: explicitly leave the option open

आप चाहें तो... literally means “if you wish.” It is useful when offering a possible solution rather than claiming the one correct answer.

आप चाहें तो पहले उनसे फ़ोन पर बात कर सकते हैं।

āp cāheṃ to pahle unse fon par bāt kar sakte haiṃ.

If you like, you could speak to them on the phone first. (respectful, addressing a man or mixed group)

अगर तुम्हें ठीक लगे, तो एक दिन और सोच लो।

agar tumheṃ ṭhīk lage, to ek din aur soc lo.

If it feels right to you, think it over for one more day. (familiar)

चाहो तो मैं तुम्हारे साथ चल सकता हूँ।

cāho to maĩ tumhāre sāth cal saktā hū̃.

If you want, I can go with you. (familiar; male speaker)

The last example offers help instead of prescribing behavior. That may be more supportive than तुम्हें अकेले नहीं जाना चाहिए “you should not go alone,” which centers the speaker's judgment.

An option frame must be sincere. आप चाहें तो आज ही कर दीजिए can still pressure someone if the deadline, hierarchy, or tone makes refusal impossible. Grammar can display choice; the real situation determines whether the choice exists.

क्यों न...? makes a proposal

क्यों न + subjunctive presents an action as a possibility worth considering. With हम, it commonly proposes joint action; with आप, it gently proposes something for the listener.

क्यों न हम पहले बजट देख लें?

kyoṃ na ham pahle bajaṭ dekh leṃ?

Why don't we look at the budget first? (collaborative suggestion)

क्यों न आप उनसे सीधे बात करें?

kyoṃ na āp unse sīdhe bāt kareṃ?

Why not speak to them directly? (respectful suggestion)

The negative न is part of this conventional proposal pattern; the speaker is not necessarily asking for the cause of not acting. By contrast, आप उनसे बात क्यों नहीं करते? can be a genuine “Why don't you talk to them?” and, with accusatory stress, may imply criticism.

आप उनसे सीधे बात क्यों नहीं करते?

āp unse sīdhe bāt kyoṃ nahīṃ karte?

Why don't you speak to them directly? (respectful grammar, but potentially critical depending on tone)

This contrast is a useful reminder: question syntax alone does not guarantee softness.

Perspective frames: मेरी मानो तो and मैं...होता तो

Advice can be marked as the speaker's perspective rather than an impersonal rule.

मेरी मानो तो अभी कोई जवाब मत दो।

merī māno to abhī koī javāb mat do.

If you take my advice, don't reply yet. (familiar, direct but caring)

मैं तुम्हारी जगह होता तो पहले लिखित प्रस्ताव माँगता।

maĩ tumhārī jagah hotā to pahle likhit prastāv māṅgtā.

If I were in your place, I'd ask for a written proposal first. (male speaker, familiar)

मेरी राय में, फ़ैसला अगले हफ़्ते तक टालना बेहतर होगा।

merī rāy meṃ, faislā agle hafte tak ṭālnā behtar hogā.

In my view, it would be better to postpone the decision until next week. (neutral/formal)

मेरी मानो तो is conversational and can be emphatic (informal); it openly foregrounds the speaker as adviser. मेरी राय में and बेहतर होगा suit careful professional discussion (formal). “If I were you” is expressed without a postposition after जगह: मैं आपकी जगह होता/होती तो....

Direct advice can be the kind choice

Softness is not always the highest priority. In danger, a direct imperative is appropriate. In a clinical setting, a professional may need to be unambiguous.

इस तार को मत छुओ—इसमें करंट है।

is tār ko mat chuo—ismeṃ karaṇṭ hai.

Don't touch this wire—it's live. (familiar, urgent warning)

अभी गाड़ी मत चलाइए; पहले किसी को बुला लीजिए।

abhī gāṛī mat calāie; pahle kisī ko bulā lījie.

Please don't drive now; call someone first. (respectful, firm safety advice)

The respectful imperatives are direct, but their force is justified by risk. Adding several tentative hedges could obscure the safety message. Politeness includes attending to the listener's welfare, not only reducing grammatical directness.

A familiar exchange: advice, resistance, and recalibration

नील: मुझे लगता है, तुम्हें नौकरी छोड़ देनी चाहिए। सना: अभी मुझे इतनी बड़ी सलाह नहीं चाहिए। नील: ठीक है—फ़ैसला तुम्हारा है। चाहो तो मैं बस तुम्हारी बात सुनूँगा।

nīl: mujhe lagtā hai, tumheṃ naukrī choṛ denī cāhie. sanā: abhī mujhe itnī baṛī salāh nahīṃ cāhie. nīl: ṭhīk hai—faislā tumhārā hai. cāho to maĩ bas tumhārī bāt sunū̃gā.

Neel: I think you should leave your job. Sana: I don't want advice that big right now. Neel: All right—the decision is yours. If you like, I'll just listen. (familiar repair)

Neel's first sentence is grammatical, but it claims a strong conclusion. The repair acknowledges Sana's autonomy and replaces advice with an optional offer. Pragmatic competence includes noticing when not to keep advising.

A respectful exchange: permission before advice

कर्मचारी: क्या मैं एक सुझाव दे सकता हूँ? प्रबंधक: जी, बताइए। कर्मचारी: शायद हमें घोषणा से पहले कानूनी सलाह लेनी चाहिए।

karmacārī: kyā maĩ ek sujhāv de saktā hū̃? prabandhak: jī, batāie. karmacārī: śāyad hameṃ ghoṣṇā se pahle kānūnī salāh lenī cāhie.

Employee: May I make a suggestion? Manager: Yes, go ahead. Employee: Perhaps we should seek legal advice before the announcement. (respectful workplace exchange; male employee)

Asking permission to advise can be useful across a hierarchy. शायद marks epistemic caution, and inclusive हमें frames the issue as shared. This is different from vague hedging: the recommended action remains precise.

Repairing an over-commanding formulation

❌ आप यह प्रस्ताव छोड़ दीजिए।

Socially over-direct as unsolicited advice about the listener's major decision, despite the respectful verb form.

✅ अगर आप चाहें, तो हम इस प्रस्ताव के जोखिमों पर एक बार और बात कर सकते हैं।

agar āp cāheṃ, to ham is prastāv ke jokhimoṃ par ek bār aur bāt kar sakte haiṃ.

If you like, we can discuss the risks of this proposal once more. (respectful, option-preserving)

The repair does not merely add कृपया. It changes the speech act from ordering a decision to offering a discussion.

Common Mistakes

Using a nominative person with चाहिए

❌ आप थोड़ा आराम करना चाहिए।

Incorrect — the person receiving advice takes को.

✅ आपको थोड़ा आराम करना चाहिए।

āpko thoṛā ārām karnā cāhie.

You should rest a little. (respectful)

Conjugating present चाहिए

❌ हमें अब निकलना चाहिए हैं।

Incorrect — present चाहिए is invariant and takes no present copula here.

✅ हमें अब निकलना चाहिए।

hameṃ ab nikalnā cāhie.

We should leave now.

Translating “in your place” with में

❌ मैं आपकी जगह में होता तो मना कर देता।

Incorrect — the idiom is आपकी जगह होना, without में.

✅ मैं आपकी जगह होता तो मना कर देता।

maĩ āpkī jagah hotā to manā kar detā.

If I were in your place, I would refuse. (male speaker, respectful)

Assuming question form cannot criticize

❌ आप मेरी बात कभी सुनते क्यों नहीं हैं?

Not a soft suggestion in the intended context — कभी and stressed क्यों नहीं make this an accusation.

✅ क्या हम दोनों एक-दूसरे की बात पूरी सुनने की कोशिश करें?

kyā ham donoṃ ek-dūsre kī bāt pūrī sunne kī kośiś kareṃ?

Could we both try to hear each other out? (collaborative repair)

Key Takeaways

  • चाहिए evaluates an action as advisable; its social force depends on authority and context.
  • चाहें तो and अगर ठीक लगे explicitly frame an option, while क्यों न...? proposes a course for consideration.
  • Perspective markers make the source of advice visible instead of presenting every judgment as a universal rule.
  • Direct imperatives are appropriate when danger or professional responsibility requires clarity.
  • The most respectful response to unwanted advice may be to stop advising and offer practical support instead.
