Hindi speakers rarely choose command morphology alone; particles, intonation, and relationship shape how a directive lands. Two forms spelled ना must be distinguished: infinitive-shaped आना can function as a familiar reminder “do come,” while postposed particle ना in आओ ना adds an appeal such as “come on/please come.” Neither is automatically polite in every context.
Because softness depends on relationship as well as morphology, compare these devices with the broader strategies for giving advice without sounding commanding.
Two different nā patterns
| Pattern | Example | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| infinitive-shaped directive | कल आना | remember to come tomorrow |
| imperative + particle ना | कल आओ ना | please come tomorrow / come on |
| negative reminder | देर मत करना | don't be late |
| command + ज़रा | ज़रा सुनो | listen a moment |
घर पहुँचकर मुझे फ़ोन करना।
ghar pahũckar mujhe fon karnā.
Call me when you get home. (familiar reminder)
इस बार हमारे साथ चलो ना।
is bār hamāre sāth calo nā.
Come with us this time, please. (familiar, coaxing)
कल की बैठक मत भूलना।
kal kī baiṭhak mat bhūlnā.
Don't forget tomorrow's meeting. (familiar reminder)
The infinitive-shaped command is common in families, friendships, instructions, and reminders. Its force ranges from caring to authoritative. Postposed ना makes the utterance interactional: the speaker appeals for cooperation, sometimes warmly and sometimes insistently.
ज़रा requests a small action
ज़रा literally suggests a small amount or moment and commonly softens a manageable request.
ज़रा खिड़की खोलो।
zarā khiṛkī kholo.
Open the window for a moment, please. (familiar)
ज़रा यह पता देखिए।
zarā yah patā dekhie.
Please take a quick look at this address. (respectful)
ज़रा एक मिनट रुकना।
zarā ek minaṭ ruknā.
Wait a minute, please. (familiar)
ज़रा does not cancel a blunt tone. Barked sharply, ज़रा सुनो! can be impatient. With a respectful -इए form and calm intonation, it usually sounds courteous in everyday interaction. कृपया is more formal and common in notices, official requests, and service language.
Postposed ना seeks alignment
बैठिए ना, आप इतनी जल्दी क्यों जा रहे हैं?
baiṭhie nā, āp itnī jaldī kyoṃ jā rahe haiṃ?
Please stay seated—why are you leaving so soon? (respectful, warm persuasion)
मुझे भी बताओ ना कि क्या हुआ।
mujhe bhī batāo nā ki kyā huā.
Come on, tell me too what happened. (familiar)
With आप, postposed ना can sound warm and personal, but it is not the default style of an official document. Repetition—चलो ना, चलो—can increase pleading or impatience rather than politeness.
तो, भी, and ज़रूर
Particles can change focus and stance.
पहले मेरी बात सुनो तो।
pahle merī bāt suno to.
At least listen to me first. (familiar, insistent appeal)
अब चलो भी, बहुत देर हो गई।
ab calo bhī, bahut der ho gaī.
Come on, let's go already; it's very late. (familiar, impatient)
दिल्ली आओ तो हमसे ज़रूर मिलना।
dillī āo to hamse zarūr milnā.
If you come to Delhi, be sure to meet us.
Postposed तो can urge the listener to perform the action before judging or responding. भी after an imperative often conveys impatience, so it should not be taught as a softener. ज़रूर positively reinforces a desired future action: “definitely/do make sure.”
Honorificity and gender
| Addressee | Plain command | With appeal |
|---|---|---|
| तू | बैठ | बैठ ना |
| तुम | बैठो | बैठो ना |
| आप | बैठिए | बैठिए ना |
Simple command forms do not change for a male versus female addressee. ना also carries no gender or number agreement. Social fit comes from तू/तुम/आप, the command form, particles, and tone together.
रिया, जाते समय दरवाज़ा बंद कर देना।
riyā, jāte samay darvāzā band kar denā.
Riya, close the door when you leave. (familiar reminder)
अमित, जाते समय दरवाज़ा बंद कर देना।
amit, jāte samay darvāzā band kar denā.
Amit, close the door when you leave. (familiar reminder)
The same कर देना addresses both names. Vector देना presents successful completion for the listener's benefit or as a requested favor; it is not object agreement.
Negative soft commands
इतनी चिंता मत करना ना।
itnī cintā mat karnā nā.
Please don't worry so much. (familiar, reassuring)
ज़रा अभी कोई फ़ैसला मत कीजिए।
zarā abhī koī faislā mat kījie.
Please don't make a decision just yet. (respectful)
Postposed ना after a negative reminder can sound reassuring or pleading. ज़रा can mitigate a request to delay action. The prohibitive core still comes from मत.
Questions as an indirect alternative
क्या आप ज़रा यह फ़ॉर्म देखेंगे?
kyā āp zarā yah form dekheṅge?
Would you take a quick look at this form? (respectful request)
This is grammatically a future question, not an imperative. It can sound less direct because it asks about willingness. Hindi therefore offers several layers of mitigation: honorific form, particle, question syntax, and intonation.
Infinitive form versus finite predicate
याद रखना, कल जल्दी आना।
yād rakhnā, kal jaldī ānā.
Remember: come early tomorrow. (familiar instruction)
These -ना forms are licensed as directives. In a factual statement, an infinitive cannot replace a finite verb: “you come early every day” requires तुम रोज़ जल्दी आते हो, not bare तुम रोज़ जल्दी आना.
Common Mistakes
Treating postposed ना as negation
❌ आओ ना का अर्थ ‘मत आओ’ है।
Incorrect — postposed ना is an appeal, not the negative particle मत.
✅ आओ ना, थोड़ी देर बैठेंगे।
āo nā, thoṛī der baiṭheṅge.
Please come; we'll sit together for a while. (familiar)
Writing the particle inside the imperative
❌ तुम भी आनाओ।
Incorrect — form the imperative आओ and write particle ना separately.
✅ तुम भी आओ ना।
tum bhī āo nā.
Please come too. (familiar)
Assuming ज़रा repairs honorific mismatch
❌ आप ज़रा बैठो।
Incorrect in careful respectful agreement — ज़रा does not turn बैठो into an आप form.
✅ आप ज़रा बैठिए।
āp zarā baiṭhie.
Please sit for a moment. (respectful)
Adding gender to a simple command
❌ रिया, फ़ोन करई ना।
Incorrect — familiar imperative करो has no feminine ending.
✅ रिया, फ़ोन करो ना।
riyā, fon karo nā.
Riya, please call. (familiar)
Mixing directive and routine morphology
❌ तुम रोज़ समय पर आना हो।
Incorrect — directive आना cannot take the habitual auxiliary हो.
✅ तुम रोज़ समय पर आते हो।
tum roz samay par āte ho.
You arrive on time every day. (familiar, male addressee)
Key Takeaways
- Distinguish infinitive-shaped directive आना from imperative plus particle आओ ना.
- ज़रा usually frames a small request; postposed ना appeals for cooperation; भी can sound impatient.
- Honorificity remains in बैठ/बैठो/बैठिए; particles do not add gender or repair a mismatched addressee form.
- Infinitive-shaped directives are real commands, not finite habitual or tense forms.
