हालाँकि यद्यपि and फिर भी concession

A concessive sentence acknowledges a fact that might normally block another outcome, then says that the outcome holds anyway. Hindi commonly frames the obstacle with हालाँकि “although,” while फिर भी “even so; nevertheless” introduces the unexpectedly surviving result. Formal prose can use Sanskrit-derived यद्यपि, often paired with तथापि or the more widely accessible फिर भी.

The logic of concession

In हालाँकि A, फिर भी B, clause A is accepted as true. The speaker does not deny the obstacle; the surprise is that it fails to prevent B.

हालाँकि बारिश हो रही थी, फिर भी बच्चे बाहर खेल रहे थे।

hālā̃ki bāriś ho rahī thī, phir bhī bacce bāhar khel rahe the.

Although it was raining, the children were still playing outside.

हालाँकि कमरा छोटा है, फिर भी उसमें चार लोग आराम से बैठ सकते हैं।

hālā̃ki kamrā choṭā hai, phir bhī usmeṃ cār log ārām se baiṭh sakte haiṃ.

Although the room is small, four people can still sit in it comfortably.

Rain normally discourages outdoor play; small size normally limits capacity. फिर भी signals that the expected consequence does not materialize. This expectation structure links concession to contrast, but the syntax differs: हालाँकि introduces a subordinate concessive frame, whereas लेकिन coordinates two assertions. See concessive clauses with हालाँकि for the larger clause system.

💡
Translate the logic, not each word: “A is true; despite A, B remains true.” That is the core shared by हालाँकि…फिर भी, यद्यपि…तथापि, and English although/nevertheless.

हालाँकि in neutral modern Hindi

हालाँकि is common in speech, journalism, and general prose. The spelling हालांकि is also widespread; this guide uses हालाँकि consistently. It can precede the concessive clause or appear between the two propositions.

मैंने वह किताब पूरी पढ़ी, हालाँकि आख़िरी अध्याय मुझे कुछ लंबा लगा।

maĩne vah kitāb pūrī paṛhī, hālā̃ki āxirī adhyāy mujhe kuch lambā lagā.

I read the whole book, although I found the last chapter rather long.

हालाँकि मीरा बहुत थकी हुई थी, उसने मेहमानों के लिए खाना बनाया।

hālā̃ki mīrā bahut thakī huī thī, usne mehmānoṃ ke lie khānā banāyā.

Although Meera was very tired, she cooked for the guests.

The second sentence omits फिर भी. That is fully grammatical: हालाँकि alone establishes the concessive relation. Adding फिर भी makes the unexpected outcome more explicit, especially after a long first clause.

हालाँकि मीरा बहुत थकी हुई थी, फिर भी उसने मेहमानों के लिए खाना बनाया।

hālā̃ki mīrā bahut thakī huī thī, phir bhī usne mehmānoṃ ke lie khānā banāyā.

Although Meera was very tired, she still cooked for the guests.

Hindi also allows हालाँकि A, लेकिन B. It is common, particularly in speech, but हालाँकि…फिर भी displays the concessive logic more transparently. Do not stack all three markers in one clause chain.

फिर भी can stand on its own

फिर भी is not restricted to an overt हालाँकि clause. It can point back to a previous sentence or to shared circumstances.

डॉक्टर ने उसे आराम करने को कहा था। फिर भी वह दफ़्तर चला गया।

ḍokṭar ne use ārām karne ko kahā thā. phir bhī vah daftar calā gayā.

The doctor had told him to rest. Even so, he went to the office.

रास्ता लंबा था, बस भी नहीं मिली; फिर भी हम समय पर पहुँच गए।

rāstā lambā thā, bas bhī nahīṃ milī; phir bhī ham samay par pahũc gae.

The route was long, and we did not get a bus; even so, we arrived on time.

Here फिर भी gathers one or more obstacles from the discourse and introduces the outcome that survives them. By contrast, temporal फिर alone means “then/again”: फिर हम घर गए “Then we went home.” The particle भी is essential to the concessive meaning “even then/even so.”

💡
When the obstacle is already a complete sentence, start the next sentence with फिर भी. Do not force a long English-style sentence merely to keep “although” and “nevertheless” together.

यद्यपि and तथापि: formal pairing

यद्यपि is a Sanskrit-derived (formal/literary) concessive conjunction. It is normal in formal essays, judgments, scholarly prose, and elevated speeches but unusual in spontaneous conversation. Its traditional correlative partner is तथापि “nevertheless” (formal/literary).

यद्यपि प्रारंभिक परिणाम उत्साहजनक हैं, तथापि अधिक व्यापक अध्ययन की आवश्यकता है।

yadyapi prārambhik pariṇām utsāhjanak haiṃ, tathāpi adhik vyāpak adhyayan kī āvaśyaktā hai.

Although the preliminary results are encouraging, a more extensive study is nevertheless required. (academic)

यद्यपि नियम में अपवाद का प्रावधान है, फिर भी उसका उपयोग केवल विशेष परिस्थितियों में किया जाना चाहिए।

yadyapi niyam meṃ apavād kā prāvadhān hai, phir bhī uskā upyog keval viśeṣ paristhitiyoṃ meṃ kiyā jānā cāhie.

Although the rule provides for an exception, it should still be used only in special circumstances. (formal)

The mixed pair यद्यपि…फिर भी is grammatical and often easier for a broad audience than the fully Sanskritized यद्यपि…तथापि. Register is a scale, not a ban on mixing etymological sources. What sounds odd is dropping यद्यपि into an otherwise relaxed message to a friend.

हालाँकि आज बहुत गर्मी है, फिर भी शाम को टहलने चलेंगे?

hālā̃ki āj bahut garmī hai, phir bhī śām ko ṭahalne caleṅge?

Although it’s very hot today, shall we go for a walk this evening?

This is natural conversation. Replacing हालाँकि with यद्यपि would make the invitation sound deliberately bookish.

Concession versus simple contrast

Compare these relations:

रिया शांत है, लेकिन उसका भाई बहुत बातूनी है।

riyā śānt hai, lekin uskā bhāī bahut bātūnī hai.

Riya is quiet, but her brother is very talkative.

This is a straightforward contrast between two people; Riya’s quietness is not an obstacle that her brother overcomes. हालाँकि would encourage an unnecessary expectation-based reading.

Agreement, tense, and clause scope

The connectors never determine agreement. Each predicate responds to its own grammatical environment:

हालाँकि लड़कियाँ देर से पहुँचीं, फिर भी कार्यक्रम समय पर शुरू हुआ।

hālā̃ki laṛkiyā̃ der se pahũcīṃ, phir bhī kāryakram samay par śurū huā.

Although the girls arrived late, the program began on time.

Feminine plural लड़कियाँ takes पहुँचीं, while masculine singular कार्यक्रम takes हुआ. Concession relates whole propositions; it does not force tense or agreement to match across clauses.

The obstacle can be hypothetical rather than factual when verb mood and context make that clear:

हालाँकि आगे खर्च बढ़ सकता है, फिर भी काम बीच में नहीं रोकेंगे।

hālā̃ki āge kharc baṛh saktā hai, phir bhī kām bīc meṃ nahīṃ rokeṅge.

Although costs may increase later, we still won’t stop the work halfway.

Here सकता है presents the obstacle as a real possibility rather than an established past fact. हालाँकि is therefore not restricted to completed events, although a pure “even if” condition is more directly expressed with भले ही or a subjunctive clause.

Punctuation

When the concessive clause comes first, put a comma after the complete clause in careful writing: हालाँकि A, फिर भी B. Never put a comma directly after हालाँकि or यद्यपि. When फिर भी begins a new sentence, no automatic comma follows it. Long formal pairs may use a semicolon, but punctuation should clarify the two propositions rather than imitate English mechanically.

Common Mistakes

❌ हालाँकि, मौसम ठंडा था, हम बाहर बैठे।

Incorrect punctuation — the comma must follow the whole concessive clause, not the conjunction.

✅ हालाँकि मौसम ठंडा था, फिर भी हम बाहर बैठे।

hālā̃ki mausam ṭhaṇḍā thā, phir bhī ham bāhar baiṭhe.

Although the weather was cold, we still sat outside.

❌ हालाँकि रास्ता लंबा था, लेकिन फिर भी मगर हम पैदल गए।

Incorrectly overloaded — several adversative markers compete for the same boundary.

✅ हालाँकि रास्ता फिसलन भरा था, फिर भी वे पैदल लौटे।

hālā̃ki rāstā phislan bharā thā, phir bhī ve paidal lauṭe.

Although the path was slippery, they still walked back.

❌ फिर हम कोशिश करते रहे।

Incorrect for the intended ‘nevertheless’ meaning — फिर alone means ‘then/again.’

✅ फिर भी हम कोशिश करते रहे।

phir bhī ham kośiś karte rahe.

Even so, we kept trying.

❌ यद्यपि हालाँकि मैं थोड़ा लेट हूँ, फिर भी मेरे लिए कॉफ़ी बचाना!

Incorrect — यद्यपि and हालाँकि compete for the same concessive slot.

✅ हालाँकि मैं थोड़ा लेट हूँ, फिर भी मेरे लिए कॉफ़ी बचाना!

hālā̃ki maĩ thoṛā leṭ hū̃, phir bhī mere lie kofī bacānā!

Although I’m a little late, save some coffee for me!

Key Takeaways

Use हालाँकि for neutral modern concession and optional फिर भी to highlight the unexpected outcome. फिर भी can also point back across a sentence boundary. Use यद्यपि and especially तथापि in formal, academic, or literary prose; यद्यपि…फिर भी is an acceptable mixed pair. Concession means that an acknowledged obstacle fails to prevent the result, while लेकिन may express a simpler contrast. Place commas at clause boundaries and avoid stacking several contrast markers.
