हालाँकि introduces a concession—a fact that would normally lead to one expectation, followed by a main claim that holds despite it: हालाँकि बारिश हो रही थी, फिर भी बच्चे बाहर खेलते रहे “Although it was raining, the children still kept playing outside.”
The first proposition is not denied. Rain really was falling; it simply failed to produce the expected result. Hindi often marks both sides with हालाँकि … फिर भी …, making the defeated expectation more explicit than English although alone.
The neutral paired pattern
The clearest structure is:
हालाँकि + concessive clause, फिर भी + main clause
हालाँकि रास्ता लंबा था, फिर भी हम पैदल गए।
hālā̃ki rāstā lambā thā, phir bhī ham paidal gae.
Although the route was long, we still went on foot.
हालाँकि नेहा बहुत व्यस्त थीं, फिर भी उन्होंने मेरी पूरी बात सुनी।
hālā̃ki nehā bahut vyast thīṃ, phir bhī unhoṃne merī pūrī bāt sunī.
Although Neha was very busy, she still listened to everything I had to say. (honorific)
Each clause has its own subject and agreement. Honorific नेहा licenses थीं, and resumptive उन्होंने introduces the main-clause agent.
फिर भी may be omitted, but the relation remains
When the structure is short and clear, फिर भी is optional:
हालाँकि कमरा छोटा है, उसमें रोशनी बहुत अच्छी आती है।
hālā̃ki kamrā choṭā hai, usmeṃ rośnī bahut acchī ātī hai.
Although the room is small, it gets very good light.
With a heavier sentence or a surprising outcome, फिर भी helps the listener locate the main clause. लेकिन can also resume it:
हालाँकि हमने पहले से मेज़ बुक की थी, लेकिन पहुँचने पर हमें कुछ देर इंतज़ार करना पड़ा।
hālā̃ki hamne pahle se mez buk kī thī, lekin pahũcne par hameṃ kuch der intazār karnā paṛā.
Although we had booked a table in advance, we had to wait for a while when we arrived.
This paired use is common contemporary Hindi. It is not necessary to delete लेकिन merely because English school grammar sometimes warns against “although … but.” Hindi has its own correlative habits.
Concessive clause after the main clause
The concession can follow as a qualification:
मैं प्रस्ताव का समर्थन करूँगा, हालाँकि मुझे कुछ बदलाव अभी भी ज़रूरी लगते हैं।
maĩ prastāv kā samarthan karū̃gā, hālā̃ki mujhe kuch badlāv abhī bhī zarūrī lagte haiṃ.
I will support the proposal, although I still think some changes are necessary. (male speaker)
Here the speaker asserts support first, then limits it. Postposed हालाँकि often sounds like an added reservation. Initial position frames the concession before the main point arrives.
Simple and expanded versions
हालाँकि मैं थका था, फिर भी काम पूरा किया।
hālā̃ki maĩ thakā thā, phir bhī kām pūrā kiyā.
Although I was tired, I still finished the work. (male speaker)
हालाँकि हमारी टीम को तैयारी के लिए बहुत कम समय मिला था, फिर भी सभी सदस्यों ने मिलकर विस्तृत रिपोर्ट निर्धारित समय से पहले पूरी कर ली।
hālā̃ki hamārī ṭīm ko taiyārī ke lie bahut kam samay milā thā, phir bhī sabhī sadasyoṃ ne milkar vistrit riporṭ nirdhārit samay se pahle pūrī kar lī.
Although our team had received very little time to prepare, all the members nevertheless worked together and completed the detailed report before the deadline.
The expanded version includes a purpose phrase and a converb मिलकर, but the concession and main assertion remain finite and independently structured.
Concession versus ordinary contrast
लेकिन can simply contrast two descriptions. हालाँकि presents one description as an insufficient obstacle or counterargument.
पहला कमरा बड़ा है, लेकिन दूसरा ज़्यादा शांत है।
pahlā kamrā baṛā hai, lekin dūsrā zyādā śānt hai.
The first room is large, but the second is quieter. (ordinary contrast)
हालाँकि पहला कमरा बड़ा है, फिर भी मैं शांत वाला कमरा चुनूँगा।
hālā̃ki pahlā kamrā baṛā hai, phir bhī maĩ śānt vālā kamrā cunū̃gā.
Although the first room is large, I will still choose the quieter room. (concession, male speaker)
The second explicitly defeats the expectation that size should determine the choice.
Finite and non-finite alternatives
के बावजूद takes a noun or nominalized expression and means “despite”:
तेज़ बारिश के बावजूद मैच जारी रहा।
tez bāriś ke bāvajūd maic jārī rahā.
Despite the heavy rain, the match continued.
बहुत थकी होने के बावजूद आयशा ने प्रस्तुति पूरी की।
bahut thakī hone ke bāvajūd āyśā ne prastuti pūrī kī.
Despite being very tired, Ayesha completed the presentation.
The non-finite थकी होने depends on Ayesha for its understood subject. If the concession has a different subject or needs its own tense, finite हालाँकि is clearer. See के बावजूद concession for case and nominalization.
Tense and temporal perspective
Concession does not create a sequence-of-tense rule:
हालाँकि पिछले साल बिक्री कम थी, इस साल कंपनी नए कर्मचारी रखेगी।
hālā̃ki pichle sāl bikrī kam thī, is sāl kampanī nae karmacārī rakhegī.
Although sales were low last year, the company will hire new employees this year.
The concessive fact is past; the overridden plan is future. Each clause is anchored by its own time phrase. English learners should not force both predicates into one tense simply because they occur in one sentence.
Spoken dialogue
इतनी ठंड में बाहर जाओगे? — हाँ, हालाँकि थोड़ी देर के लिए ही।
itnī ṭhaṇḍ meṃ bāhar jāoge? — hā̃, hālā̃ki thoṛī der ke lie hī.
Will you go out in this cold? — Yes, although only for a little while. (familiar)
The answer contains an elliptical concessive qualification: the understood proposition is “I will go out.” Such fragments are natural in conversation but should be expanded when the reference is not obvious.
Formal written example and boundary
हालाँकि प्रारंभिक आँकड़े उत्साहजनक हैं, तथापि दीर्घकालीन प्रभाव का विश्वसनीय आकलन अभी संभव नहीं है।
hālā̃ki prārambhik ā̃kaṛe utsāhjanak haiṃ, tathāpi dīrghkālīn prabhāv kā viśvasnīya ākalan abhī sambhav nahīṃ hai.
Although the preliminary data are encouraging, a reliable assessment of the long-term impact is nevertheless not yet possible. (formal)
Annotated structure:
हालाँकि [प्रारंभिक आँकड़े उत्साहजनक हैं] | तथापि [दीर्घकालीन प्रभाव का विश्वसनीय आकलन अभी संभव नहीं है]
तथापि is (formal/Sanskritic). The fully paired यद्यपि … तथापि … is even more formal and belongs mainly to official, academic, and elevated prose. Neutral conversation prefers हालाँकि … फिर भी ….
Common Mistakes
❌ हालाँकि बारिश हो रही थी, इसलिए हम घर पर रहे।
Wrong for concession—the result is expected because of rain, so the relation is causal.
✅ क्योंकि बारिश हो रही थी, हम घर पर रहे।
kyoṅki bāriś ho rahī thī, ham ghar par rahe.
Because it was raining, we stayed home.
❌ हालाँकि वह बीमार था, इसलिए वह काम पर गया।
Incorrect connector pairing for the intended unexpected outcome—इसलिए marks an expected result.
✅ हालाँकि वह बीमार था, फिर भी वह काम पर गया।
hālā̃ki vah bīmār thā, phir bhī vah kām par gayā.
Although he was ill, he still went to work.
❌ वह बीमार था के बावजूद काम पर गया।
Incorrect—के बावजूद takes a noun or nominalized expression, not a finite था clause.
✅ बीमार होने के बावजूद वह काम पर गया।
bīmār hone ke bāvajūd vah kām par gayā.
Despite being ill, he went to work.
❌ हालाँकि रिपोर्ट छोटी थी, फिर भी उसमें बहुत कम जानकारी थी।
Infelicitous as a concession—the two facts support the same expectation instead of defeating one.
✅ हालाँकि रिपोर्ट छोटी थी, फिर भी उसमें काफ़ी जानकारी थी।
hālā̃ki riporṭ choṭī thī, phir bhī usmeṃ kāfī jānkārī thī.
Although the report was short, it still contained plenty of information.
