Hindi can link two events through the relative–correlative pair जब … तब …: जब बारिश रुकेगी, तब हम बाहर जाएँगे “When the rain stops, we will go outside.” जब introduces the time-setting clause; तब points back to that time in the main clause.
The pair is transparent and especially useful in careful learner production. In natural speech, तब is often omitted or replaced by discourse तो, but the two finite clauses still need a recoverable temporal relationship. Hindi also chooses tense and aspect in the जब clause by meaning; it does not copy the English ban on future forms after when.
The full relative–correlative pattern
The basic order is:
जब + time clause, तब + main clause
जब संग्रहालय खुलेगा, तब हम टिकट ख़रीदेंगे।
jab saṅgrahālay khulegā, tab ham ṭikaṭ xarīdeṅge.
When the museum opens, we will buy tickets.
जब मैं घर पहुँचा, तब बच्चे सो रहे थे।
jab maĩ ghar pahũcā, tab bacce so rahe the.
When I reached home, the children were sleeping. (male speaker)
The second example combines perfective arrival with a progressive background. जब does not force matching aspect; it locates the main situation relative to the subordinate event.
तब is often optional
When the boundary and relation are obvious, the main clause can begin directly:
जब तुम्हें समय मिले, मुझे संदेश भेज देना।
jab tumheṃ samay mile, mujhe sandeś bhej denā.
When you have time, send me a message. (informal)
Omitting तब does not erase the subordinate relation because जब already marks it. Adding तब gives a more balanced or emphatic structure: जब तुम्हें समय मिले, तब मुझे संदेश भेज देना.
Conversational Hindi also commonly uses तो when the main event is presented as the next development or consequence:
जब मैं स्टेशन पहुँचा तो ट्रेन निकल चुकी थी।
jab maĩ sṭeśan pahũcā to ṭren nikal cukī thī.
When I reached the station, the train had already left. (conversational)
This जब … तो … pattern is grammatical and widespread. तब highlights temporal correlation; तो more strongly advances the narrative or consequence. Neither makes the other universally mandatory.
Clause order can reverse
A postposed जब clause adds or narrows the time after the main statement:
मैं तुम्हें फ़ोन करूँगा जब दुकान खुलेगी।
maĩ tumheṃ fon karū̃gā jab dukān khulegī.
I will call you when the shop opens. (male speaker)
In this order, तब is normally absent. Initial जब is better when the time frame organizes a longer stretch of discourse; postposed जब is natural when the main event is already the topic.
One-time, habitual, and future readings
Aspect determines whether जब means one occasion or a recurring situation.
जब दादी गाँव आती थीं, तब हमारे लिए मिठाई लाती थीं।
jab dādī gā̃v ātī thīṃ, tab hamāre lie miṭhāī lātī thīṃ.
Whenever Grandmother came to the village, she used to bring sweets for us. (honorific habitual past)
जब भी बिजली जाती है, लिफ़्ट अपने-आप रुक जाती है।
jab bhī bijlī jātī hai, lifṭ apne-āp ruk jātī hai.
Whenever the power goes out, the elevator stops automatically.
जब भी explicitly means “whenever.” In a habitual context, bare जब can also receive a repeated reading. A one-time perfective such as जब वह आया refers to a particular arrival.
For future time, Hindi readily uses future marking in both clauses:
जब आप दिल्ली पहुँचेंगे, तब मौसम काफ़ी गर्म होगा।
jab āp dillī pahũceṅge, tab mausam kāfī garm hogā.
When you reach Delhi, the weather will be quite hot. (respectful)
English normally says “when you reach,” not “when you will reach.” Hindi पहुँचेंगे is natural because the arrival itself is future. Subjunctive जब आप पहुँचें is also possible in instructions or less certain framing; this page leaves its internal morphology to the mood pages.
Simple and expanded versions
जब घंटी बजेगी, तब कक्षा शुरू होगी।
jab ghaṇṭī bajegī, tab kakṣā śurū hogī.
When the bell rings, the class will begin.
जब सुबह की पहली घंटी ठीक साढ़े आठ बजे बजेगी, तब सभी विद्यार्थियों को अपने निर्धारित कमरों में बैठ जाना होगा।
jab subah kī pahlī ghaṇṭī ṭhīk sāṛhe āṭh baje bajegī, tab sabhī vidyārthiyoṃ ko apne nirdhārit kamroṃ meṃ baiṭh jānā hogā.
When the first morning bell rings at exactly eight thirty, all students will have to take their seats in their assigned rooms.
The expanded main clause uses a necessity construction with its own subject-like dative phrase. The temporal relation remains overtly paired.
Different and shared subjects
Finite जब clauses freely allow a different subject:
जब मेहमान आएँगे, मैं चाय बनाऊँगी।
jab mehmān āẽge, maĩ cāy banāū̃gī.
When the guests arrive, I will make tea. (female speaker)
For a same-subject sequence, a converb can be more compact:
दफ़्तर पहुँचकर मुझे एक संदेश भेज देना।
daftar pahũckar mujhe ek sandeś bhej denā.
Send me a message after reaching the office. (informal)
The converb's understood arriver is the understood addressee of भेज देना. If the subjects differ, finite जब prevents a dangling modifier:
जब रीना स्टेशन पहुँची, तब ट्रेन चल पड़ी।
jab rīnā sṭeśan pahũcī, tab ṭren cal paṛī.
When Reena reached the station, the train started moving.
The non-finite स्टेशन पहुँचकर ट्रेन चल पड़ी would incorrectly suggest that the train reached the station before starting. See same-subject constraints with converbs.
जब तक and तब तक
Adding तक creates an endpoint relation: जब तक … तब तक … means “until/as long as …”. It is not simply a longer spelling of ordinary जब … तब.
जब तक डॉक्टर न आएँ, तब तक मरीज़ को पानी मत दीजिए।
jab tak ḍokṭar na āeṃ, tab tak marīz ko pānī mat dījie.
Until the doctor comes, do not give the patient water. (respectful)
Both तक phrases mark the duration's boundary. The negative subordinate form is conventional in “until” clauses.
Spoken dialogue
कब निकलोगे? — जब बारिश थोड़ी कम होगी, तब निकलूँगा।
kab nikloge? — jab bāriś thoṛī kam hogī, tab niklū̃gā.
When will you leave? — I will leave when the rain eases a little. (familiar, male speaker)
The answer may omit तब in faster speech. Keeping it makes the response deliberate and balanced.
Formal written example and boundary
जब सभी आवेदनों की प्रारंभिक जाँच पूरी हो जाएगी, तब चयनित उम्मीदवारों को ईमेल द्वारा सूचित किया जाएगा।
jab sabhī āvedanoṃ kī prārambhik jā̃c pūrī ho jāegī, tab caynit ummīdvāroṃ ko īmel dvārā sūcit kiyā jāegā.
When the preliminary review of all applications has been completed, the selected candidates will be notified by email. (formal)
Annotated structure:
जब [सभी आवेदनों की प्रारंभिक जाँच पूरी हो जाएगी] | तब [चयनित उम्मीदवारों को ईमेल द्वारा सूचित किया जाएगा]
The subordinate future perfective establishes a completion point; the main passive follows it. Hindi marks both future relations overtly rather than applying English sequence rules.
Common Mistakes
❌ दुकान खुलेगी, मैं तुम्हें फ़ोन करूँगा।
Unclear for the intended ‘when’ relation—two juxtaposed future clauses do not overtly mark temporal dependence.
✅ जब दुकान खुलेगी, तब मैं तुम्हें फ़ोन करूँगा।
jab dukān khulegī, tab maĩ tumheṃ fon karū̃gā.
When the shop opens, I will call you. (male speaker, familiar)
❌ जब तुम कल पहुँचते हो, तब मुझे फ़ोन करना।
Wrong for one future arrival—habitual पहुँचते हो suggests a repeated situation.
✅ जब तुम कल पहुँचोगे, तब मुझे फ़ोन करना।
jab tum kal pahũcoge, tab mujhe fon karnā.
When you arrive tomorrow, call me. (familiar)
❌ घर पहुँचकर बारिश शुरू हुई।
Incorrect control—the sentence makes बारिश the understood subject of पहुँचकर.
✅ जब मैं घर पहुँचा, तब बारिश शुरू हुई।
jab maĩ ghar pahũcā, tab bāriś śurū huī.
When I reached home, it started raining. (male speaker)
❌ जब तक बैठक ख़त्म होगी, हम यहीं इंतज़ार करेंगे।
Non-neutral for the intended ‘until’ boundary—the subordinate clause normally uses न in this construction.
✅ जब तक बैठक ख़त्म न हो, तब तक हम यहीं इंतज़ार करेंगे।
jab tak baiṭhak xatm na ho, tab tak ham yahī̃ intazār kareṅge.
We will wait right here until the meeting ends.
Key Takeaways
- जब introduces a temporal frame; तब resumes it in the main clause.
- तब is often optional, and conversational जब … तो … is common when the main event advances the narrative.
- Each clause chooses its own aspect; Hindi may use future marking after जब where English uses present.
- Converbs compact same-subject sequences, while finite जब safely allows different subjects.
- जब तक … तब तक … marks an endpoint or duration and has its own negative pattern.
