Hindi converb chains place one or more invariant -कर/-करके events before a final predicate: दरवाज़ा बंद करके चाबी रखकर वह निकल गया. With bounded actions, this order usually mirrors event order—closing, putting down the key, then leaving. The final predicate alone carries the main tense, mood, agreement, and polarity. The morphology of the first linker is set out under the conjunctive participle in -कर.
Sequence is not the whole story. A converb can also express means, cause, reaction, or manner, and those relations may overlap with the final event. Good interpretation therefore combines word order with lexical aspect, real-world knowledge, and discourse focus.
The right edge anchors the chain
Read a chain from its final predicate to establish the clause frame:
अदिति ने मसौदा पढ़कर टिप्पणियाँ जोड़कर संपादक को भेज दिया।
aditi ne masaudā paṛhkar ṭippaṇiyā̃ joṛkar sampādak ko bhej diyā.
Aditi read the draft, added comments, and sent it to the editor.
Final भेज दिया is a masculine singular perfective compound because unmarked masculine मसौदा is the sent object. It licenses अदिति ने. Invariant पढ़कर/जोड़कर contributes earlier stages but no separate agreement.
aditi masaudā paṛhkar ṭippaṇiyā̃ joṛkar sampādak ke daftar gaī.
Aditi read the draft, added comments, and went to the editor's office.
Now final intransitive गई keeps Aditi unmarked and agrees feminine. The earlier transitive activities do not independently impose ने on the whole chain.
Left-to-right order with bounded events
When each verb describes a result with a natural endpoint, linear order strongly suggests temporal order:
उसने लिफ़ाफ़ा खोलकर चिट्ठी निकाली और ध्यान से पढ़ी।
usne lifāfā kholkar ciṭṭhī nikālī aur dhyān se paṛhī.
He or she opened the envelope, took out the letter, and read it carefully.
Opening enables removal; removal precedes reading. Reversing the converbs would describe a different or incoherent sequence.
sabziyā̃ dhokar kāṭkar kaṛāhī meṃ ḍāl dījie.
Wash the vegetables, cut them, and put them in the pan. (respectful)
Recipes exploit this iconic ordering. The final imperative determines the directive force; the converbs supply prerequisite steps under the same understood addressee.
Means and manner need not be separate stages
nikhil ne koḍ badalkar samasyā hal kī.
Nikhil solved the problem by changing the code.
Changing the code is the means of solving, not merely an unrelated event that happened earlier.
vah hāth hilākar hameṃ bulā rahī thī.
She was calling us by waving her hand.
Waving can overlap with calling. By contrast, invariant adverbial Converb हिलाकर packages the gesture as communicative means.
baccā dauṛkar mā̃ ke pās gayā.
The child ran over to his mother.
Running constitutes the path and manner of going. It is misleading to infer two neatly separated events, “the child finished running” and only then “went.”
Cause and reaction
Perception and cognition converbs often provide the stimulus for the final event:
नतीजे देखकर पूरी टीम हैरान रह गई।
natīje dekhkar pūrī ṭīm hairān rah gaī.
The whole team was left astonished on seeing the results.
uskī āvāz pahcānkar maĩne darvāzā khol diyā.
Recognizing his or her voice, I opened the door.
The cause is inferred from a plausible relation. -कर itself does not encode “because,” so a speaker can cancel that inference: नतीजे देखकर भी टीम शांत रही “Even after seeing the results, the team remained calm.”
One semantic controller across the chain
The neutral chain has one understood actor or experiencer even when objects change:
फ़राह ने दुकान से फूल खरीदकर पड़ोसी को दे दिए।
farāh ne dukān se phūl kharīdkar paṛosī ko de die.
Farah bought flowers from the shop and gave them to the neighbor.
Farah buys and gives; फूल participates in both events but does not control the converb.
When actors change, use a finite or nominalized boundary:
मज़दूरों के काम पूरा करने के बाद निरीक्षक ने कमरा जाँचा।
mazdūroṃ ke kām pūrā karne ke bād nirīkṣak ne kamrā jā̃cā.
After the workers completed the work, the inspector checked the room.
काम पूरा करके निरीक्षक ने... would normally make the inspector the person who completed the work. The genitive subject मज़दूरों के prevents that unintended responsibility shift.
Implicit controllers in instructions and passives
The shared controller need not be an overt nominative subject. In an imperative, it is the addressee:
पहले ग्राहक का नाम पूछकर कंप्यूटर में दर्ज कीजिए।
pahle grāhak kā nām pūchkar kampyūṭar meṃ darj kījie.
First ask the customer's name and enter it in the computer. (respectful)
The respectful addressee asks and enters. In an agentless procedural passive, an implicit institutional actor can control both operations:
हर नमूने की जाँच करके परिणाम दर्ज किया गया।
har namūne kī jā̃c karke pariṇām darj kiyā gayā.
Each sample was tested and the result was recorded. (formal passive)
Surface subject परिणाम is the recorded patient, not literally the tester. The chain is licensed by a shared implicit agent. Therefore “same subject” is best understood as consistent semantic control, not a simplistic rule that the nearest surface noun must perform every action.
TAM and modality scope from the final predicate
kām pūrā karke ham śām tak lauṭ āẽge.
After finishing the work, we'll be back by evening.
Future आएँगे locates the whole planned sequence. The converb does not itself carry future morphology.
purānī prati dekhkar āp antar samajh sakte haiṃ.
By looking at the old copy, you can understand the difference. (respectful)
Modal सकते हैं scopes over the resulting ability. Depending on context, it need not claim that the addressee has actually looked at the copy yet.
Negation usually targets the final predicate
usne khānā khākar davā nahīṃ lī.
He or she ate but did not take the medicine.
The default reading asserts eating and negates medicine-taking. If both events are denied, finite coordination is clearer:
उसने न खाना खाया, न दवा ली।
usne na khānā khāyā, na davā lī.
He or she neither ate nor took the medicine.
To negate only the background event, use an explicit negative non-finite pattern:
उसने बिना खाना खाए दवा ले ली।
usne binā khānā khāe davā le lī.
He or she took the medicine without eating.
Negation reveals that a converb is not merely another finite verb joined by “and.” Matrix polarity does not automatically spread leftward over the chain.
Finite coordination gives events equal weight
Zoya turned off the camera, and then she left the room.
zoyā kaimrā band karke kamre se bāhar niklī.
After turning off the camera, Zoya left the room.
Finite coordination independently asserts both clauses and repeats the subject. The converb backgrounds shutting down the camera as preparation. Notice that matrix intransitive निकली yields no ने in the compressed version.
Long chains and processing
Multiple converbs are grammatical when one controller and a natural sequence remain clear. In speech, intonation groups them; in writing, a chain that hides responsibilities or contains many heavy complements is better split.
āvedan kholkar vivaraṇ jā̃ckar sahī śreṇī chunkar use jamā kareṃ.
Open the application, check the details, select the correct category, and submit it. (formal instruction)
This four-stage instruction is manageable because one addressee performs each short action. If separate departments handled the stages, finite clauses would be necessary.
A compressed written sequence and its expansion
sabhī āvedanoṃ kī jā̃c kar pātra ummīdvāroṃ kī sūcī banākar vibhāg use vebsāiṭ par prakāśit karegā.
After checking all applications and drawing up a list of eligible candidates, the department will publish it on the website. (formal)
The later subject विभाग controls both initial converbs. Expanded:
vibhāg pahle sabhī āvedanoṃ kī jā̃c karegā. phir vah pātra ummīdvāroṃ kī sūcī banāegā aur use vebsāiṭ par prakāśit karegā.
The department will first check all applications. It will then draw up a list of eligible candidates and publish it on the website. (formal)
Expansion clarifies stage boundaries and gives each future event equal assertion.
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming every converb is a finished separate event
Incorrect inference — दौड़कर आया normally presents running as the manner/path of coming.
vah merā sandeś milte hī dauṛkar āyā.
He came running as soon as he got my message.
2. Letting matrix negation spread over the converb
Incorrect — the ordinary reading asserts the meal and negates only taking the medicine.
usne bhojan bhī nahīṃ kiyā aur davā bhī nahīṃ lī.
He or she neither ate a meal nor took the medicine.
3. Switching controller inside a chain
Incorrect for Seema writing and Mohan sending—the converb seeks the later subject Mohan as its controller.
sīmā ne riporṭ likhī aur mohan ne use bhejā.
Seema wrote the report, and Mohan sent it.
4. Using simultaneous -ते हुए for a completed prerequisite
Wrong for a clearly completed closing before departure—करते हुए keeps the closing open.
darvāzā band karke vah cābī jeb meṃ rakhkar calā gayā.
He closed the door, put the key in his pocket, and left.
5. Giving every event finite morphology
Incorrect — a converb uses an invariant stem plus -कर, not a finite perfective plus -कर.
usne fāil kholkar paṛhkar band kar dī.
He or she opened the file, read it, and closed it.
Key Takeaways
- The final predicate anchors TAM, agreement, polarity, and clause type for the chain.
- Linear order strongly guides bounded sequences, but converbs also express means, cause, reaction, and overlapping manner.
- One semantic controller normally spans the chain, including implicit addressees and agents in procedural passives.
- Matrix negation generally scopes over the final predicate, not automatically over earlier converbs.
- Split a chain into finite clauses when subjects change, scope becomes unclear, or heavy stages deserve equal assertion.
