करके is the ordinary overt converb of करना. It is especially important because thousands of Hindi predicates end in करना: काम करना → काम करके, तैयार करना → तैयार करके, फ़ोन करना → फ़ोन करके, जाँच करना → जाँच करके. The lexical noun, adjective, or loan stays in place; करके converts the whole predicate into an invariant link to the following event. The internal noun–light-verb structure is introduced under noun plus करना predicates.
Calling it an “expanded” converb highlights that the linked event may contain more than one lexical word. फ़ाइल डाउनलोड करके भेजना is not three equal finite verbs: डाउनलोड करके packages the completed or enabling download, and final भेजना carries the clause's directive or other finite/non-finite role.
How करके is built
For simple lexical verbs, Standard Hindi commonly uses -कर: देखकर, लिखकर, जाकर, खाकर. When the predicate itself uses करना, its converb is करके:
| Base predicate | Converb phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| काम करना | काम करके | after/by doing the work |
| साफ़ करना | साफ़ करके | after/by cleaning |
| फ़ैसला करना | फ़ैसला करके | after making a decision |
| बुक करना | बुक करके | after/by booking |
| अलग करना | अलग करके | after/by separating |
दस्तावेज़ों की जाँच करके अधिकारी ने रसीद पर हस्ताक्षर किए।
dastāvezoṃ kī jā̃c karke adhikārī ne rasīd par hastākṣar kie.
After checking the documents, the official signed the receipt.
The lexical event is दस्तावेज़ों की जाँच करना. Only करना changes to करके; the genitive complement and event noun remain intact.
Do not form the result mechanically as करकर. Bare कर can itself serve as a compact linker—जाँच कर अधिकारी ने...—but करके is the normal fully overt form in neutral speech and writing.
Invariance and the final predicate
करके never changes for the subject's gender, number, person, or honorificity.
नेहा कमरा साफ़ करके बाज़ार गई।
nehā kamrā sāf karke bāzār gaī.
After cleaning the room, Neha went to the market.
दोनों लड़के कमरा साफ़ करके बाज़ार गए।
donoṃ laṛke kamrā sāf karke bāzār gae.
After cleaning the room, both boys went to the market.
The converb is identical. Feminine गई and masculine plural गए on the final predicate carry agreement.
Changing the final predicate can also change clause-level alignment:
समीरा ने फ़ाइल अपडेट करके टीम को भेज दी।
samīrā ne fāil apḍeṭ karke ṭīm ko bhej dī.
Sameera updated the file and sent it to the team.
Transitive perfective भेज दी licenses समीरा ने and agrees with feminine फ़ाइल. Invariant अपडेट करके neither triggers ने independently nor controls दी.
Sequence and completed preparation
With bounded predicates, करके often presents a preparatory action as completed before the next one:
कार्ड से भुगतान करके रसीद संभालकर रखिए।
kārḍ se bhugtān karke rasīd sambhālkar rakhie.
After paying by card, keep the receipt safe. (respectful)
उसने सीट बुक करके मुझे यात्रा का समय बताया।
usne sīṭ buk karke mujhe yātrā kā samay batāyā.
After booking the seat, he or she told me the travel time.
Payment and booking reach their relevant boundary before the instruction or report that follows. The converb itself has no past tense: a future instruction can include the same ordering.
Means, cause, and manner
Like other converbs, करके can express more than simple chronology.
उसने नक़्शा बड़ा करके रास्ता समझाया।
usne naqśā baṛā karke rāstā samjhāyā.
He or she explained the route by enlarging the map.
तुमने अचानक फ़ोन करके मुझे डरा दिया।
tumne acānak fon karke mujhe ḍarā diyā.
You startled me by calling suddenly. (informal)
Enlarging is a means; calling supplies the cause of the startle. Neither relation is encoded by a separate word meaning by or because. Context connects the events.
वह मज़ाक करके बात टाल गया।
vah mazāk karke bāt ṭāl gayā.
He brushed the matter aside with a joke.
Here joking describes manner and strategy. It may overlap with avoiding the issue rather than ending at a sharply separate moment.
Shared-subject control
The subject of करके is normally the subject of the following predicate:
माया ने चाय तैयार करके मेहमानों को बुलाया।
māyā ne cāy taiyār karke mehmānoṃ ko bulāyā.
Maya prepared the tea and called the guests.
Maya prepares and calls. If the first event has a different subject, an explicit finite or nominalized clause is needed:
चाय तैयार होने के बाद माया ने मेहमानों को बुलाया।
cāy taiyār hone ke bād māyā ne mehmānoṃ ko bulāyā.
After the tea was ready, Maya called the guests.
This version does not claim that Maya prepared the tea. चाय तैयार करके माया ने... would normally make Maya the preparer.
Tighter combinations with रखना, देना, लेना, and देखना
Some sequences with करके and a following verb are conventional complex predicates:
- तैयार करके रखना keeps something prepared in advance.
- साफ़ करके देना delivers something in a cleaned state or performs cleaning for someone.
- नोट करके लेना secures a note for one's own use, though simple नोट कर लेना is often more compact.
- करके देखना means trying an action to see its result.
मैंने सारे प्रमाणपत्र स्कैन करके रखे हैं।
maĩne sāre pramāṇpatra skain karke rakhe haiṃ.
I have scanned all the certificates and kept them ready.
एक बार यह तरीका इस्तेमाल करके देखो।
ek bār yah tarīqā istemāl karke dekho.
Try using this method once and see. (familiar)
The following verb contributes a maintained result or trial viewpoint. It is not a second dictionary action translated independently. Lexical convention decides whether a tighter कर लेना/कर देना compound or an explicit करके chain is more natural.
Negating the करके event
न + करके can make deliberate nonperformance relevant, especially in contrastive or formal wording:
समय पर भुगतान न करके कंपनी ने अनुबंध की शर्त तोड़ी।
samay par bhugtān na karke kampanī ne anubandh kī śart toṛī.
By not paying on time, the company breached a term of the contract. (formal)
Everyday Hindi often prefers समय पर भुगतान किए बिना “without paying on time.” The alternatives are not mechanically interchangeable in every sentence: न करके foregrounds a chosen or contrasted omission, while बिना किए presents absence of the event.
करके is not automatically informal
करके is neutral and appears in conversation, instructions, journalism, and formal prose. Bare कर can be more compact, but it is not intrinsically more correct or formal. Compare:
कृपया आवेदन पूरा करके आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ जोड़ें।
kripyā āvedan pūrā karke āvaśyak dastāvez joṛeṃ.
Please complete the application and attach the required documents. (formal instruction)
आवेदन पूरा कर आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ जोड़ें।
āvedan pūrā kar āvaśyak dastāvez joṛeṃ.
Complete the application and attach the required documents. (compact formal instruction)
Both are standard. The second is denser; the first separates the preparatory action more audibly. Genre, rhythm, and processing—not a categorical speech-versus-writing rule—shape the choice.
Finite clauses versus compressed करके
रीता ने सूची तैयार की और फिर उसने सभी सदस्यों को भेजी।
rītā ne sūcī taiyār kī aur phir usne sabhī sadasyoṃ ko bhejī.
Rita prepared the list and then sent it to all the members.
रीता ने सूची तैयार करके सभी सदस्यों को भेजी।
rītā ne sūcī taiyār karke sabhī sadasyoṃ ko bhejī.
Rita prepared the list and sent it to all the members.
The finite coordination gives preparation equal assertion and can support a subject change. The converb backgrounds it as preparation for sending.
A compressed written sentence and its expansion
प्राप्त टिप्पणियों का विश्लेषण करके विभाग अंतिम मसौदा प्रकाशित करेगा।
prāpt ṭippaṇiyoṃ kā viśleṣaṇ karke vibhāg antim masaudā prakāśit karegā.
After analyzing the comments received, the department will publish the final draft. (formal)
Expanded:
विभाग पहले प्राप्त टिप्पणियों का विश्लेषण करेगा। इसके बाद वह अंतिम मसौदा प्रकाशित करेगा।
vibhāg pahle prāpt ṭippaṇiyoṃ kā viśleṣaṇ karegā. iske bād vah antim masaudā prakāśit karegā.
The department will first analyze the comments received. After that, it will publish the final draft. (formal)
The finite version independently asserts both future stages. The compressed version makes analysis the background condition for publication.
Common Mistakes
1. Building करके from the infinitive
❌ काम करनाके वह बाहर गया।
Incorrect — remove infinitive -ना; करना has the converb करके.
✅ अपना काम करके वह बाहर गया।
apnā kām karke vah bāhar gayā.
After doing his work, he went outside.
2. Using mechanical करकर for one event
❌ उसने भुगतान करकर रसीद ली।
Incorrect for a single payment event — use करके.
✅ उसने भुगतान करके रसीद ली।
usne bhugtān karke rasīd lī.
After paying, he or she took the receipt.
3. Making करके agree
❌ लड़कियाँ अभ्यास करकेीं मंच पर आईं।
Incorrect — करके is invariant and takes no feminine plural ending.
✅ लड़कियाँ अभ्यास करके मंच पर आईं।
laṛkiyā̃ abhyās karke mañc par āīṃ.
After rehearsing, the girls came onto the stage.
4. Combining करके with के बाद
❌ बैठक करके के बाद निदेशक चले गए।
Incorrect — choose either बैठक करके or बैठक करने के बाद.
✅ बैठक समाप्त होने के बाद निदेशक चले गए।
baiṭhak samāpt hone ke bād nideśak cale gae.
After the meeting ended, the director left. (honorific)
5. Hiding a subject change
❌ रिपोर्ट तैयार करके बैठक शुरू हुई।
Wrong for 'after the report was ready, the meeting began'—it suggests that the meeting prepared the report.
✅ रिपोर्ट तैयार होने के बाद बैठक शुरू हुई।
riporṭ taiyār hone ke bād baiṭhak śurū huī.
The meeting began after the report was ready.
Key Takeaways
- करके is the invariant converb of करना and carries entire noun-, adjective-, or loan-plus-करना predicates into a clause chain.
- It can express sequence, preparation, means, cause, or manner; context supplies the exact relation.
- The converb normally shares the following predicate's subject, while the final predicate carries agreement and alignment.
- Tighter sequences with रखना, देना, लेना, and देखना have conventional result or trial meanings.
- करके and compact कर are both Standard Hindi; avoid categorical register labels.
