A Hindi -कर/-करके converb normally has no overt subject of its own. Its understood performer is recovered from the following finite clause: मीरा ने चाय बनाकर मेहमानों को दी means that Meera both made and served the tea. This shared-controller pattern is often called the same-subject constraint.
“Subject” here means the semantic participant controlling the action, not merely a noun with no postposition. An ergative agent, a dative experiencer, an understood imperative addressee, or an implicit passive agent can control a converb. The practical question is: who could naturally perform both events?
The basic invariant form is reviewed under the conjunctive participle in -कर. This page focuses on how its missing subject is interpreted.
One controller across the event chain
ārav ne khiṛkī kholkar kamre meṃ tāzī havā āne dī.
Aarav opened the window and let fresh air into the room.
bacce hāth dhokar khāne kī mez par ā gae.
The children washed their hands and came to the dining table.
In the first example, ergative आरव ने controls both खोलकर and आने दी. In the second, unmarked बच्चे control धोकर and आ गए. Changing case marking does not change the control relation.
The converb itself is invariant:
| Controller | Converb chain | Visible agreement |
|---|---|---|
Control is semantic, not just nominative
A dative experiencer can be the shared participant:
मुझे पुरानी तस्वीर देखकर दादी की याद आई।
mujhe purānī tasvīr dekhkar dādī kī yād āī.
Seeing the old photograph reminded me of my grandmother.
The person marked by मुझे sees the photograph and experiences the memory. Matrix grammatical shape याद आई does not supply a nominative human subject, but the controller is still clear.
An imperative has an understood addressee:
रसीद जाँचकर नीचे हस्ताक्षर कर दीजिए।
rasīd jā̃ckar nīce hastākṣar kar dījie.
Check the receipt and sign below. (respectful)
The respectfully addressed listener both checks and signs. Hindi need not repeat आप.
A passive may leave the shared agent implicit:
हर आवेदन जाँचकर सुरक्षित सर्वर पर रखा जाएगा।
har āvedan jā̃ckar surakṣit sarvar par rakhā jāegā.
Each application will be checked and placed on a secure server. (formal)
The institution's unnamed staff are understood to check and store the application. The surface subject आवेदन is affected by both actions; the implicit agent supplies control. This type is natural when institutional procedure makes the actor obvious, but it becomes unclear if two different unnamed actors are intended.
What happens when the actor changes?
A converb cannot freely introduce an independent overt subject and then hand the sentence to another subject:
रीना ने खाना बनाया और मेहमानों ने मिलकर खाया।
rīnā ne khānā banāyā aur mehmānoṃ ne milkar khāyā.
Reena cooked the food, and the guests ate together.
Two finite clauses are appropriate because Reena cooks while the guests eat. If the second event is backgrounded, a nominalized clause also works:
रीना के खाना बनाने के बाद मेहमान मेज़ पर बैठे।
rīnā ke khānā banāne ke bād mehmān mez par baiṭhe.
After Reena cooked the food, the guests sat at the table.
Here रीना के ... बनाने के बाद has its own explicitly marked subject. The page on infinitive subjects and agreement explains why this nominalized structure can host a different participant.
Same subject does not require strict temporal separation
Shared control is a syntactic-semantic constraint; it does not determine one single time relation. A converb can express prior sequence, means, cause, or integrated manner.
nīl ne pāsvard badalkar phir se log-in kiyā.
Neel changed the password and logged in again.
vah muskurākar bolī ki sab ṭhīk hai.
She said with a smile that everything was fine.
The password change precedes the login. Smiling may overlap with speaking and describes its manner. Both still have one controller. English having changed fits the first, while English smiling fits the second; Hindi uses the same converb family because its organizing principle is event integration, not an English participle label.
-कर and -करके preserve the same control relation
Expanded -करके can give the first event more rhythmic or discourse weight, but it does not license a subject change.
nehā ne sārī battiyā̃ band karke mukhya darvāzā band kiyā.
Neha switched off all the lights and locked the main door.
nehā ne sārī battiyā̃ band kar mukhya darvāzā band kiyā.
Neha switched off all the lights and locked the main door. (compact style)
Both versions keep Neha as controller. Bare lexical कर in the second is a compact converb of करना; बंद करके in the first is fuller. Neither means that someone else locked the door.
Finite clauses assert more independently
Compare finite coordination with converb compression:
समिति ने रिपोर्ट पढ़ी और फिर उसने दो बदलाव सुझाए।
samiti ne riporṭ paṛhī aur phir usne do badlāv sujhāe.
The committee read the report, and then it suggested two changes.
samiti ne riporṭ paṛhkar do badlāv sujhāe.
After reading the report, the committee suggested two changes.
The finite version asserts the reading as a separate proposition and can contrast its time, polarity, or subject. The converb version backgrounds it as preparation for the recommendation. Hindi clause chains therefore encode information hierarchy: only the last predicate must carry finite TAM, while earlier shared-subject events can be compressed.
A compressed written sentence and its expansion
dastāvezoṃ kī jā̃c kar yogya ummīdvāroṃ ko agle caraṇ ke lie bulāyā jāegā.
After the documents are reviewed, eligible candidates will be invited to the next stage. (formal)
The compact administrative version leaves the responsible body implicit across both actions. An expanded version names it:
चयन समिति पहले दस्तावेज़ों की जाँच करेगी। उसके बाद वह योग्य उम्मीदवारों को अगले चरण के लिए बुलाएगी।
cayan samiti pahle dastāvezoṃ kī jā̃c karegī. uske bād vah yogya ummīdvāroṃ ko agle caraṇ ke lie bulāegī.
The selection committee will first review the documents. After that, it will invite eligible candidates to the next stage. (formal)
Expansion is preferable when responsibility matters. Compression is effective when procedure, rather than the actor, is foregrounded.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving the converb and matrix predicate different agents
Incorrect — बनाकर cannot host Reena as an independent subject and then switch to the guests.
rīnā ne khānā banāyā aur mehmānoṃ ne khāyā.
Reena cooked the food, and the guests ate it.
2. Duplicating a dative controller
Incorrect — मुझे and मैंने duplicate the same experiencer in incompatible roles.
mujhe vah tasvīr dekhkar bacpan yād āyā.
Seeing that photograph brought back memories of childhood for me.
3. Adding agreement to an invariant converb
Incorrect — -कर does not agree with a feminine plural controller.
laṛkiyā̃ ṭikaṭ kharīdkar andar gaīṃ.
The girls bought tickets and went inside.
4. Using a converb for an environmental subject change
Incorrect for two subjects — this wrongly links the rain to दौड़े.
bāriś rukne ke bād bacce maidān meṃ dauṛe.
After the rain stopped, the children ran onto the field.
5. Assuming करके permits a new subject
Incorrect — expanding -कर to करके does not license a subject change.
ḍokṭar ne jā̃c kī, phir nars ne davā dī.
The doctor examined the patient, then the nurse gave the medicine.
Key Takeaways
- -कर/-करके is invariant and normally receives its controller from the following finite clause.
- The controller may be ergative, dative, understood in an imperative, or implicit in a passive; control is semantic, not merely nominative.
- Use finite coordination or a nominalized/finite subordinate clause when the actor changes.
- Shared subject does not force strict “first A, then B” time: the converb can also express means, cause, or overlapping manner.
- कर and करके differ in packaging and rhythm, not in whether they allow an independent subject.
