Serial-like motion sequences

Hindi can compress manner, path, direction, and deixis into short verb sequences: कूद निकलना “jump out,” दौड़ आना “come running,” भाग जाना “run away,” ले आना “bring along.” These resemble serial verbs because two verbs contribute to one tightly integrated motion event, while the final verb bears the finite morphology.

Not every adjacent pair is the same construction. A bare motion root plus a motion verb forms a compact motion predicate; ले आना/ले जाना packages accompanied transport; an oblique infinitive before motion expresses purpose; and -कर links events more transparently. Distinguishing them prevents literal translations and predicts agreement, ने, and what the sentence actually entails.

Bare motion root plus finite motion verb

In the tightest pattern, the first motion verb appears as a bare root and the second motion verb is inflected:

चोर पिछली खिड़की से कूद निकला।

cor pichlī khiṛkī se kūd niklā.

The thief jumped out through the back window.

बच्ची मुझे देखते ही दौड़ आई।

baccī mujhe dekhte hī dauṛ āī.

The girl came running as soon as she saw me.

In कूद निकला, कूद- supplies manner and निकलना supplies an outward path and reached result. In दौड़ आई, running supplies manner and आना supplies speakerward or reference-point direction. Both verbs retain recognizable spatial content; this differs from a highly bleached vector such as पढ़ लिया, where लेना does not describe physical taking.

PatternContributionExample
manner + pathhow motion occurs + boundary crossedकूद निकलना
manner + deixishow motion occurs + toward/awayदौड़ आना, भाग जाना
path + mannerresult/path + characteristic motionनिकल भागना

पिंजरा खुलते ही चिड़िया निकल भागी।

piñjrā khulte hī ciṛiyā nikal bhāgī.

As soon as the cage opened, the bird escaped.

The order is partly constructional and partly lexical. निकल भागना is established, but learners cannot freely reverse every pair or combine any manner verb with any path verb. Natural compatibility depends on whether the two verbs jointly describe one coherent manner-plus-result event.

💡
In a true motion sequence, ask what spatial information each verb contributes. If both still contribute—manner, path, source, goal, or deixis—the second verb is more than a generic completion vector.

The final verb carries agreement and TAM

The first bare root is invariant. The final motion verb carries gender, number, aspect, and any following auxiliary.

दोनों लड़कियाँ सीढ़ियाँ उतरकर दौड़ आईं।

donoṃ laṛkiyā̃ sīṛhiyā̃ utarkar dauṛ āīṃ.

Both girls came running down the stairs.

कुत्ता खुला फाटक देखकर बाहर भाग गया।

kuttā khulā phāṭak dekhkar bāhar bhāg gayā.

On seeing the open gate, the dog ran away.

Feminine plural लड़कियाँ controls आईं; masculine singular कुत्ता controls गया. These are intransitive perfectives and take no ने. The final head's argument structure governs the clause even when an earlier verb contributes the event's vivid manner.

Perfective motion sequences are naturally bounded because a path boundary or deictic destination is reached. Imperfective forms instead describe repetition or motion in progress:

शाम होते ही चमगादड़ गुफ़ा से उड़ निकलते हैं।

śām hote hī camgādaṛ guphā se uṛ nikalte haiṃ.

As evening falls, bats fly out of the cave.

Here habitual निकलते हैं presents repeated emergence. The sequence does not require past time or a single completed event.

ले आना and ले जाना: accompanied transport

In ले आना and ले जाना, ले- retains possession or accompaniment while the final motion verb supplies direction. Together they mean “bring” and “take away,” but their internal structure differs from simple lexical लाना and from vector लेना.

अनया सम्मेलन से मेरे लिए एक किताब ले आई।

anayā sammelan se mere lie ek kitāb le āī.

Anaya brought me a book from the conference.

ये खाली डिब्बे नीचे गोदाम में ले जाओ।

ye khālī ḍibbe nīce godām meṃ le jāo.

Take these empty boxes down to the storeroom. (familiar)

Perfective अनया ... ले आई has no ने and agrees with Anaya because final आना is intransitive. Compare the ordinary transitive verb लाना:

अनया ने सम्मेलन से मेरे लिए किताब लाई।

anayā ne sammelan se mere lie kitāb lāī.

Anaya brought me a book from the conference.

Now perfective lexical लाना takes ने, and feminine unmarked किताब controls लाई. The translations are close, but the alignment frames are not.

💡
Do not add ने by translating the whole expression as English bring. In ले आई, final intransitive आना controls alignment; in simple perfective लाई, transitive लाना triggers the usual ergative pattern.

Purpose motion uses an oblique infinitive

An oblique infinitive before जाना/आना expresses why someone moves: दवा लेने जाना “go to get medicine,” दोस्त से मिलने आना “come to meet a friend.” This is not a bare-root serial predicate.

रीमा बाज़ार सब्ज़ियाँ लेने गई।

rīmā bāzār sabziyā̃ lene gaī.

Reema went to the market to buy/get vegetables.

तकनीशियन मशीन देखने कल आएगा।

taknīśiyan maśīn dekhne kal āegā.

The technician will come tomorrow to inspect the machine.

The motion event can occur even if the purpose fails:

रीमा सब्ज़ियाँ लेने गई थी, मगर दुकान बंद थी।

rīmā sabziyā̃ lene gaī thī, magar dukān band thī.

Reema had gone to get vegetables, but the shop was closed.

Thus लेने गई does not entail ले आई. English went to buy has the same non-entailment, but learners often confuse the visible लेने with completed taking.

The conjunctive participle -कर/-करके links one event to a following finite event: जाकर पूछना “go and ask,” दरवाज़ा बंद करके निकलना “close the door and leave.” It can express sequence, means, or tightly integrated manner, but the -कर marker keeps the first event morphologically distinct. Its full range is covered under the conjunctive participle in -कर.

ऊपर जाकर रिसेप्शन पर पूछो।

ūpar jākar risepśan par pūcho.

Go upstairs and ask at reception. (familiar)

दरवाज़ा बंद करके चुपचाप बाहर निकल जाइए।

darvāzā band karke cupcāp bāhar nikal jāie.

Please close the door and quietly step outside. (respectful)

The first chain has two conceptually successive actions. The second includes बंद करके as a prior action and निकल जाइए as a motion predicate with a separation/result nuance. Calling every multi-verb string a “compound verb” conceals these layers.

Colloquial -के variants such as जाके देखो are common (informal), while edited prose normally prefers जाकर देखो or जाके only in represented speech. Register matters even when the event structure is the same.

The final finite predicate determines clause-level alignment

Longer chains make the head effect especially clear:

तारा फ़ाइल दफ़्तर से लेकर आई।

tārā fāil daftar se lekar āī.

Tara brought the file from the office.

तारा ने फ़ाइल दफ़्तर से लाकर मेज़ पर रख दी।

tārā ne fāil daftar se lākar mez par rakh dī.

Tara brought the file from the office and put it on the desk.

The first ends in intransitive आई: Tara is unmarked and controls feminine agreement. The second ends in transitive perfective रख दी: Tara takes ने, while feminine फ़ाइल controls दी. The invariant participles लेकर/लाकर do not decide matrix alignment.

This is why English chronological order is not enough. Hindi builds a right-headed predicate chain: the final finite element determines the clause's TAM and often its agreement frame, while earlier elements enrich manner, path, purpose, or sequence.

Negation reveals different scopes

Negation can deny the whole motion complex, the motion undertaken for a purpose, or successful transported arrival.

चोर दीवार फाँदकर भी भाग नहीं निकला।

cor dīvār phā̃dkar bhī bhāg nahīṃ niklā.

Even after climbing over the wall, the thief did not escape.

वह दवा लेने अस्पताल नहीं गया।

vah davā lene aspatāl nahīṃ gayā.

He did not go to the hospital to get the medicine.

वह अस्पताल से दवा लेकर नहीं आया।

vah aspatāl se davā lekar nahīṃ āyā.

He did not bring the medicine back from the hospital.

The second denies the purpose-directed trip; the third denies successful bringing. Neither is a word-for-word rearrangement of English didn't go or didn't bring. Context and constituent order identify the intended scope.

A dialogue: direction and social register

ज़रा नीचे जाकर मेरा पार्सल ले आओ।

zarā nīce jākar merā pārsal le āo.

Please go downstairs and bring my parcel. (familiar)

अभी जाता हूँ; क्या रसीद भी ले आऊँ?

abhī jātā hū̃; kyā rasīd bhī le āū̃?

I'll go now; shall I bring the receipt too? (male speaker, informal)

हाँ, और लौटते समय प्रबंधक से मिलकर आइएगा।

hā̃, aur lauṭte samay prabandhak se milkar āiegā.

Yes, and please meet the manager on your way back. (respectful)

The first turn chains जाकर with imperative ले आओ. The reply uses speakerward आऊँ. In the last sentence, मिलकर marks the meeting as prior to the respectful return instruction आइएगा; the shared subject is understood across the chain.

Common Mistakes

1. Inflecting both verbs in a tight motion sequence

❌ चोर खिड़की से कूदा निकला।

Incorrect for the integrated ‘jumped out’ predicate — the first verb is a bare root.

✅ संदिग्ध पिछली दीवार से कूद निकला।

sandigdh pichlī dīvār se kūd niklā.

The suspect jumped out over the back wall.

2. Adding ने because English uses transitive “bring”

❌ सिया ने मेरी छतरी ले आई।

Incorrect with final intransitive आई — the subject stays unmarked.

✅ सिया मेरी छतरी साथ ले आई।

siyā merī chatrī sāth le āī.

Siya brought my umbrella along.

3. Assuming a purpose was achieved

❌ वह टिकट लेने गया, इसलिए टिकट मिल गया।

Invalid inference — going with a purpose does not entail successful receipt.

✅ वह टिकट लेने गया था, पर खिड़की बंद मिली।

vah ṭikaṭ lene gayā thā, par khiṛkī band milī.

He had gone to get a ticket, but found the counter closed.

4. Copying English particle order

❌ बच्चा दौड़ा बाहर कमरे से।

Incorrect neutral Hindi order — source and path material precede the final predicate.

✅ बच्चा कमरे से दौड़कर बाहर गया।

baccā kamre se dauṛkar bāhar gayā.

The child ran out of the room.

5. Treating every motion sequence as a bleached vector

❌ कूद निकलने में निकलने का कोई दिशात्मक अर्थ नहीं है।

Incorrect claim — निकलना contributes outward path and boundary crossing.

✅ कूद निकलने में कूदना ढंग बताता है और निकलना बाहर की दिशा।

kūd nikalne meṃ kūdnā ḍhaṅg batātā hai aur niklanā bāhar kī diśā.

In कूद निकलना, कूदना gives the manner and निकलना the outward direction.

Key Takeaways

  • Bare-root motion sequences integrate manner with path or deixis; both verbs may retain real spatial meaning.
  • The final verb bears agreement and TAM, and its transitivity often determines ने and the agreement controller.
  • ले आना/ले जाना express accompanied transport; they are structurally distinct from simple लाना and vector लेना.
  • An oblique infinitive before motion expresses purpose and does not entail that the purpose was achieved.
  • -कर chains transparently link events; they can contain a compact motion predicate as their final component.
