Hindi places सकना, पाना, and चुकना after a bare verb stem, but they answer different questions. कर सकता है asks whether doing is within someone's capacity or possible; कर पाया asks whether an attempt actually succeeded; कर चुका है presents the action as already behind the reference point. Treating all three as loose equivalents of English can, manage, or have destroys contrasts that Hindi marks systematically.
The lexical stem supplies the event. The final secondary verb carries agreement and most TAM morphology. Unlike ordinary transitive perfectives, these predicates normally keep their actor unmarked and do not use ने, even when the lexical stem is transitive.
One form, three semantic centers
| Construction | Central meaning | Typical question |
|---|---|---|
| stem + सकना | capacity, feasibility, contextual permission | Can it be done? |
| stem + पाना | attainment despite circumstances or effort | Did the attempt work out? |
| stem + चुकना | anterior completion or prior experience | Is the event already complete? |
नमन बिना चश्मे के भी छोटा अक्षर पढ़ सकता है।
naman binā caśme ke bhī choṭā akṣar paṛh saktā hai.
Naman can read small print even without glasses.
कम रोशनी के बावजूद नमन पता पढ़ पाया।
kam rośnī ke bāvajūd naman patā paṛh pāyā.
Despite the dim light, Naman managed to read the address.
नमन यह दस्तावेज़ पहले ही पढ़ चुका है।
naman yah dastāvez pahle hī paṛh cukā hai.
Naman has already read this document.
The first attributes an ability. The second asserts successful performance on one difficult occasion. The third locates a completed reading before now. No English tense label alone predicts which Hindi form is appropriate.
सकना: capacity and feasibility
सकना combines with animate actors for learned ability, physical capacity, permission, or opportunity. With inanimate subjects or passive forms, it expresses possibility.
यह मशीन एक घंटे में सौ डिब्बे भर सकती है।
yah maśīn ek ghaṇṭe meṃ sau ḍibbe bhar saktī hai.
This machine can fill one hundred boxes in an hour.
क्या मैं बैठक में यह मुद्दा उठा सकता हूँ?
kyā maĩ baiṭhak meṃ yah muddā uṭhā saktā hū̃?
May I raise this issue in the meeting? (male speaker)
Habitual सकता है is neutral for a current or general capacity. Perfective सका evaluates one bounded opportunity and often implies success; negative नहीं सका reports inability on that occasion.
हम भारी ट्रैफ़िक के बावजूद समय पर पहुँच सके।
ham bhārī ṭraifik ke bāvajūd samay par pahũc sake.
We were able to arrive on time despite the heavy traffic.
आवाज़ टूट रही थी, इसलिए मैं आख़िरी सवाल सुन नहीं सका।
āvāz ṭūṭ rahī thī, islie maĩ āxirī savāl sun nahīṃ sakā.
The sound was breaking up, so I couldn't hear the last question. (male speaker)
Progressive कर सक रहा है is possible for a currently functioning or emerging ability, but simple कर सकता है remains the default. There is no ordinary imperative “be able”; सको/सकें are subjunctive forms, not direct commands.
पाना: realized success under circumstances
पाना focuses less on abstract capacity and more on whether circumstances allow an event to be realized. This makes perfective and negative forms especially frequent.
तीन बार कोशिश करने के बाद सना फ़ॉर्म जमा कर पाई।
tīn bār kośiś karne ke bād sanā form jamā kar pāī.
After three attempts, Sana managed to submit the form.
नेटवर्क बंद था, इसलिए हम भुगतान कर नहीं पाए।
neṭvark band thā, islie ham bhugtān kar nahīṃ pāe.
The network was down, so we couldn't complete the payment.
Both speakers may have the necessary skill. पाना says whether the real attempt reached its endpoint. Habitual पाता है describes recurring practical access rather than a stored ability:
छोटी बच्ची के कारण वह रात को लगातार सो नहीं पाती।
choṭī baccī ke kāraṇ vah rāt ko lagātār so nahīṃ pātī.
Because of the little child, she cannot manage to sleep continuously at night.
In future कर पाऊँगा/पाऊँगी, the speaker predicts successful realization: not just “will possess the ability,” but “will actually manage under the circumstances.” See the focused सकना–पाना comparison for the remaining overlap.
चुकना: completion before a reference point
चुकना presents the lexical event as completed and no longer pending. In present-perfect कर चुका है, the reference point is now; past कर चुका था places completion before a past point; future or inferential कर चुका होगा places it before a projected point.
लेखा-विभाग सभी पुराने बिल चुका चुका है।
lekhā-vibhāg sabhī purāne bil cukā cukā hai.
The accounts department has already paid all the old bills.
Here the repeated sound is grammatical: lexical चुका- means “pay off,” while secondary चुका marks prior completion. Such sequences are legal when each layer has a distinct function, though speakers may rephrase them to avoid stylistic heaviness.
मेहमानों के आने से पहले हम कमरा साफ़ कर चुके थे।
mehmānoṃ ke āne se pahle ham kamrā sāf kar cuke the.
We had cleaned the room before the guests arrived.
कल दोपहर तक टीम परिणाम घोषित कर चुकी होगी।
kal dopahar tak ṭīm pariṇām ghoṣit kar cukī hogī.
By tomorrow afternoon, the team will have announced the result.
Although चुकना favors bounded events, context can bound an activity or create an experiential reading:
मैं इस शहर में पहले भी रह चुका हूँ।
maĩ is śahar meṃ pahle bhī rah cukā hū̃.
I have lived in this city before. (male speaker)
The sentence packages a previous period of residence as complete. It does not merely describe residence in progress.
Negated चुकना is possible when a relevant endpoint remains unreached, particularly with अभी/अभी तक:
समिति अभी अंतिम निर्णय नहीं ले चुकी है।
samiti abhī antim nirṇay nahīṃ le cukī hai.
The committee has not yet made the final decision.
For a failed attempt, however, नहीं कर पाया is usually more informative than negative चुकना. Completion not yet reached and attempted success that failed are not the same claim.
Agreement and the absence of ने
The final secondary verb is intransitive in this construction. Its unmarked actor controls agreement, even when the lexical stem takes an object.
लीना पूरी रिपोर्ट लिख सकी।
līnā pūrī riporṭ likh sakī.
Leena was able to write the whole report.
लीना समय पर पूरी रिपोर्ट लिख पाई।
līnā samay par pūrī riporṭ likh pāī.
Leena managed to write the whole report on time.
लीना पूरी रिपोर्ट लिख चुकी है।
līnā pūrī riporṭ likh cukī hai.
Leena has already written the whole report.
All three agree with feminine लीना, and none takes लीना ने. Feminine object रिपोर्ट happens to match; with a masculine subject, the ending would be masculine despite that object. This contrasts with ordinary perfective लीना ने रिपोर्ट लिखी.
The bare lexical stem never agrees: लिख सकी, लिख पाई, लिख चुकी. All visible gender-number morphology belongs to the final secondary verb and any following auxiliary.
Aspectual restrictions and stacking
These secondaries are not freely interchangeable vector verbs. सकना is modal; पाना measures attainment; चुकना is anterior-completive. Ordinary progressives differ in naturalness: कर पा रहा है is common for ongoing practical success, कर सक रहा है is available for currently functioning ability, while कर चुक रहा है is generally not the ordinary way to express gradual completion.
Some further stacking is possible when scope is clear. कर पा सकता है means roughly “can manage to do,” with सकना taking scope over attainment. कर चुका होगा combines completive चुकना with inferential/future होना. But strings such as कर सक चुका are not generated by permuting the verbs.
A dialogue: ability, outcome, completion
क्या तुम आज मसौदा पूरा कर सकते हो?
kyā tum āj masaudā pūrā kar sakte ho?
Can you finish the draft today? (informal)
कोशिश की, लेकिन अभी पूरा नहीं कर पाया।
kośiś kī, lekin abhī pūrā nahīṃ kar pāyā.
I tried, but I haven't managed to finish it yet. (male speaker)
ठीक है; कानूनी टीम अपना हिस्सा भेज चुकी है।
ṭhīk hai; qānūnī ṭīm apnā hissā bhej cukī hai.
All right; the legal team has already sent its part.
The first asks about feasibility. The reply reports an unsuccessful attempt, not absence of skill. The final turn marks another task as already complete. All three share a broad completion context but contribute different structures of meaning.
Common Mistakes
1. Using an -ना infinitive before the secondary verb
❌ मैं यह फ़ाइल खोलना सकता हूँ।
Incorrect — सकना follows a bare lexical stem.
✅ मैं यह फ़ाइल दूसरे कंप्यूटर पर खोल सकता हूँ।
maĩ yah fāil dūsre kampyūṭar par khol saktā hū̃.
I can open this file on another computer. (male speaker)
2. Adding ने in a modal perfective
❌ राधा ने समय पर टिकट खरीद पाई।
Incorrect — modal पाना keeps the achiever unmarked.
✅ राधा समय पर टिकट खरीद पाई।
rādhā samay par ṭikaṭ kharīd pāī.
Radha managed to buy the ticket in time.
3. Using सकना when a completed result is asserted
❌ रिपोर्ट कल भेज सकता है।
Wrong for the intended ‘has already been sent’ meaning — सकना expresses possibility, not anterior completion.
✅ विभाग रिपोर्ट पहले ही भेज चुका है।
vibhāg riporṭ pahle hī bhej cukā hai.
The department has already sent the report.
4. Treating पाना as a synonym of stable ability
❌ वह बचपन से बाँसुरी बजा पाती है।
Awkward for a simple learned skill — पाना foregrounds practical attainment.
✅ वह बचपन से बाँसुरी बजा सकती है।
vah bacpan se bā̃surī bajā saktī hai.
She has been able to play the flute since childhood.
5. Permuting the secondary verbs freely
❌ वह काम पूरा कर सक चुका है।
Incorrect — सकना and चुकना cannot be reordered as interchangeable vectors.
✅ वह काम पूरा कर चुका है।
vah kām pūrā kar cukā hai.
He has completed the work.
Key Takeaways
- All three follow a bare verb stem and carry the visible agreement and TAM themselves.
- सकना profiles capacity or feasibility; पाना profiles realized success; चुकना profiles prior completion.
- Their standard perfective constructions do not use ने; the unmarked actor controls agreement.
- Negative पाना reports a failed attempt, while negative चुकना says that an expected endpoint has not yet been reached.
- Further stacking is restricted by semantic scope, not licensed by arbitrary permutation.
