सकना versus पाना

English can, could, and be able to conceal a contrast that Hindi can make explicit. सकना is the broad modal of capacity, permission, and practical possibility: it asks whether an action lies within someone's abilities or the situation's possibilities. After another verb stem, पाना asks whether that possible action is actually attained—whether someone manages, gets the opportunity, or reaches the result under real conditions.

Compare वह हिंदी पढ़ सकता है “He can read Hindi” with वह धुँधला पता पढ़ पाया “He managed to read the blurred address.” Both constructions have overlap, especially in bounded past events. The distinction is a choice of speaker viewpoint, not a claim that सकना never reports success. Full forms are covered on सकना ability and possibility and पाना achieved ability.

The core contrast

ChoiceQuestion it answersTypical contextsSpeaker stance
verb stem + सकनाIs the action possible or within capacity?skills, permission, general feasibility, available capabilityneutral assessment of possibility
verb stem + पानाDoes the action actually get achieved under these conditions?effort, obstacles, opportunity, plans working out, attempted resultsattention to attainment or failure

निखिल बिना चश्मे के भी पढ़ सकता है।

nikhil binā caśme ke bhī paṛh saktā hai.

Nikhil can read even without glasses.

कम रोशनी के बावजूद निखिल पता पढ़ पाया।

kam rośnī ke bāvajūd nikhil patā paṛh pāyā.

Despite the dim light, Nikhil managed to read the address.

The first attributes a capacity. The second evaluates one result against difficult circumstances. The English word could could appear in either translation, which is why translation alone is unreliable.

💡
Use सकना to map the space of possibilities. Use modal पाना when you follow one possible action to its actual or anticipated outcome.

A compact decision tree

  1. Is this a stable skill, physical capacity, permission, or general possibility? Choose सकना.
  2. Is this a specific attempt, opportunity, or plan whose outcome matters? Prefer पाना.
  3. Is the clause habitual? Choose सकता है for general ability; choose पाता है for what circumstances regularly let someone accomplish.
  4. Is the clause future? Choose सकूँगा for future capacity or feasibility; choose पाऊँगा when predicting whether the plan will work out.
  5. Is it a bounded past success or failure? Both may be possible. सका evaluates occasion-specific ability and often entails success; पाया foregrounds managing, access, effort, or attained outcome.
  6. Does पाना take a noun object and mean “obtain”? That is lexical पाना, not the modal construction discussed here.

Both modals follow a bare verb stem, not an infinitive: कर सकना, कर पाना, never करना सकना or करना पाना.

General capacity versus recurring attainment

Habitual सकता/सकती/सकते attributes a capability or says an action is generally feasible. Habitual पाता/पाती/पाते says that the person's real circumstances repeatedly allow the action to happen.

मीरा फ़्रेंच में बातचीत कर सकती है।

mīrā freñc meṃ bātcīt kar saktī hai.

Meera can hold a conversation in French.

काम के बाद मीरा मुश्किल से अभ्यास कर पाती है।

kām ke bād mīrā muśkil se abhyās kar pātī hai.

After work, Meera can barely manage to practice.

Meera's skill and her schedule are separate facts. She may कर सकती है because she has the ability yet कर नहीं पाती because work leaves no time. This is the clearest proof that the two forms are not synonyms.

यह नई मशीन आधे घंटे में सौ डिब्बे भर सकती है।

yah naī maśīn ādhe ghaṇṭe meṃ sau ḍibbe bhar saktī hai.

This new machine can fill one hundred boxes in half an hour.

An inanimate subject naturally takes सकना for operational capacity. पाना is possible when the machine's actual performance under constraints is being evaluated—बिजली कम थी, फिर भी मशीन काम पूरा कर पाई “The power was low, yet the machine managed to finish the job”—but that wording personifies the result path slightly.

Bounded events: genuine overlap

Perfective सका/सकी/सके/सकीं and पाया/पाई/पाए/पाईं both occur when one occasion has a result. An affirmative such as दरवाज़ा खोल सका normally implies that the door was opened; it is not merely a statement of unused capacity. पाना nevertheless puts greater weight on reaching the endpoint.

दमकलकर्मी समय पर दरवाज़ा खोल सके।

damkalkarmī samay par darvāzā khol sake.

The firefighters were able to open the door in time.

कई कोशिशों के बाद दमकलकर्मी दरवाज़ा खोल पाए।

kaī kośiśoṃ ke bād damkalkarmī darvāzā khol pāe.

After several attempts, the firefighters managed to open the door.

Both sentences entail success in their normal reading. सके evaluates ability within the deadline; पाए fits the explicit sequence of attempts and achieved result. The contrast is gradient, and native speakers may choose either when context already supplies both possibility and effort.

💡
Do not “correct” every successful सका to पाया. Perfective सकना can report successful occasion-specific ability. पाना is chosen when attainment deserves extra discourse prominence.

Negation: impossibility versus failed attainment

Negative forms sharpen the usual difference. नहीं कर सका says that ability or feasibility failed on the occasion. नहीं कर पाया presents a wanted, attempted, or expected result as unachieved and often carries regret or apology.

चोट के कारण मैं दौड़ नहीं सका।

coṭ ke kāraṇ maĩ dauṛ nahīṃ sakā.

Because of the injury, I couldn't run. (male speaker; inability)

ट्रैफ़िक के कारण मैं समय पर पहुँच नहीं पाया।

ṭraifik ke kāraṇ maĩ samay par pahũc nahīṃ pāyā.

Because of traffic, I didn't manage to arrive on time. (male speaker)

Both patterns are natural with an explicit obstacle. The पाना sentence places the missed endpoint—arrival by the deadline—at center stage. That makes माफ़ कीजिए, मैं फ़ोन नहीं कर पाया a common apology: the speaker treats the call as an intended action that did not get accomplished.

मैंने कोशिश की, लेकिन फ़ाइल खोल नहीं पाया।

maĩne kośiś kī, lekin fāil khol nahīṃ pāyā.

I tried, but I couldn't manage to open the file. (male speaker)

Notice that मैंने belongs only to the separate clause मैंने कोशिश की. Modal फ़ाइल खोल नहीं पाया has unmarked मैं understood as its subject. Do not carry ergative ने into the modal construction.

Future plans: available ability versus whether it works out

Future सकना predicts capacity or feasibility. Future पाना predicts successful realization under anticipated constraints.

अगले महीने मैं फिर लंबी दूरी तक गाड़ी चला सकूँगी।

agle mahīne maĩ phir lambī dūrī tak gāṛī calā sakū̃gī.

Next month I'll be able to drive long distances again. (female speaker; restored capacity)

अगर बैठक जल्दी ख़त्म हुई, तो मैं आख़िरी ट्रेन पकड़ पाऊँगी।

agar baiṭhak jaldī xatm huī, to maĩ āxirī ṭren pakaṛ pāū̃gī.

If the meeting ends early, I'll manage to catch the last train. (female speaker)

The train exists and the speaker knows how to board it; what is uncertain is whether the chain of circumstances permits the result. That is पाना's natural territory.

क्या हम यह काम आज पूरा कर सकेंगे?

kyā ham yah kām āj pūrā kar sakeṅge?

Will we be able to complete this work today? (feasibility)

इतनी देर से शुरू करके क्या हम यह काम आज पूरा कर पाएँगे?

itnī der se śurū karke kyā ham yah kām āj pūrā kar pāẽge?

Starting this late, will we manage to complete this work today?

The second question carries a stronger sense of a plan being tested against circumstances.

Permission belongs to सकना

First-person questions with सकना conventionally request permission. Modal पाना does not normally replace it because permission concerns whether an action is allowed, not whether the attempt reaches an endpoint.

क्या मैं यहाँ बैठ सकता हूँ?

kyā maĩ yahā̃ baiṭh saktā hū̃?

May I sit here? (male speaker; neutral polite permission request)

क्या मैं यहाँ बैठ पाऊँगा? would instead ask whether circumstances will let the speaker obtain a seat—perhaps the room will be full. The English surface “Will I be able to sit here?” leaves the distinction implicit.

A dialogue where stance changes

प्रबंधक: चोट अब कैसी है—क्या आप कल दफ़्तर आ पाएँगे? कर्मचारी: शायद; मैं सुबह तक बता पाऊँगा।

prabandhak: coṭ ab kaisī hai—kyā āp kal daftar ā pāẽge? karmacārī: śāyad; maĩ subah tak batā pāū̃gā.

Manager: How is the injury now—do you think you'll manage to come to the office tomorrow? Employee: Perhaps; I'll be able to let you know by morning. (respectful)

क्या आप कल आ सकते हैं? is also grammatical and commonly asks availability. In this medical context, आ पाएँगे? acknowledges that attendance depends on recovery and other conditions; it can sound more considerate. The wrong form does not make the sentence ungrammatical, but it can shift the interaction from concern about how things work out to a bare assessment of capability.

Core सकना and modal पाना are neutral in register. समर्थ होना “be capable” is common in administrative or elevated prose (formal), but it does not replace these everyday modals in conversation.

Common Mistakes

Using an infinitive before the modal

❌ मैं आज आना पाऊँगा।

Incorrect — both सकना and modal पाना follow the bare verb stem.

✅ मैं आज आ पाऊँगा।

maĩ āj ā pāū̃gā.

I'll manage to come today. (male speaker)

Combining the two modals

❌ मैं आपका फ़ोन इस्तेमाल कर पा सकता हूँ।

Incorrect — सकना and modal पाना are alternatives here, not a stacked modal sequence.

✅ क्या मैं आपका फ़ोन इस्तेमाल कर सकता हूँ?

kyā maĩ āpkā fon istemāl kar saktā hū̃?

May I use your phone? (male speaker; respectful)

Adding ergative ने to modal पाना

❌ मैंने समय पर ट्रेन पकड़ पाया।

Incorrect in the modal ‘managed to’ construction — the actor remains unmarked and controls पाया.

✅ मैं समय पर ट्रेन पकड़ पाया।

maĩ samay par ṭren pakaṛ pāyā.

I managed to catch the train on time. (male speaker)

Making पाना agree with the wrong gender

❌ नौकरी के बाद रीना मुश्किल से पढ़ पाता है।

Incorrect — feminine रीना controls पाती है in this unmarked-subject modal construction.

✅ नौकरी के बाद रीना मुश्किल से पढ़ पाती है।

naukrī ke bād rīnā muśkil se paṛh pātī hai.

After work, Reena barely manages to study.

Diagnostic checklist

  • Is the claim about skill, permission, capacity, or general feasibility? Choose सकना.
  • Is an actual attempt, opportunity, obstacle, deadline, or achieved result central? Prefer पाना.
  • In the habitual, do you mean “is capable” or “regularly manages”? Choose सकता है or पाता है accordingly.
  • In the future, do you predict available ability or whether the plan works out? Choose सकेगा or पाएगा accordingly.
  • In a bounded event, could both work? Use पाना to foreground attainment, but accept सकना when occasion-specific ability and success are the point.
  • Does पाना mean “obtain” with a noun object? Analyze that as the separate lexical verb.

The reliable choice is modal viewpoint: सकना evaluates the availability of a possibility, while पाना evaluates whether that possibility becomes an accomplished reality.

Key Takeaways

  • Use सकना for capacity, permission, and general feasibility.
  • Use modal पाना when an attempt, opportunity, obstacle, or attained result is central.
  • Perfective सका and पाया genuinely overlap; पाना simply foregrounds successful or failed attainment more strongly.
