पाना pānā: to obtain and manage to

पाना has two connected but grammatically different uses. As a lexical transitive verb, it means “obtain, attain, receive” and is common in formal or written contexts. After a bare verb stem, it means “manage to” and evaluates whether an action was actually achieved. The two uses share forms but differ in alignment.

Lexical objects include सफलता पाना, अवसर पाना, पुरस्कार पाना, स्थान पाना. Everyday speech often prefers मिलना for simply receiving something: मुझे चिट्ठी मिली is more conversational than मैंने चिट्ठी पाई.

वैज्ञानिक ने अपने काम के लिए अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मान पाया।

vaijñānik ne apne kām ke lie antarrāṣṭrīya sammān pāyā.

The scientist received international recognition for the work.

इस विचार को साहित्य में विशेष स्थान मिला, लेकिन राजनीति में जगह नहीं मिल पाई।

is vicār ko sāhitya meṃ viśeṣ sthān milā, lekin rājnīti meṃ jagah nahīṃ mil pāī.

This idea gained a special place in literature, but could not find a place in politics.

💡
Lexical पाना is often formal “attain/obtain.” For an ordinary received item, dative मुझे किताब मिली is usually more conversational than transitive मैंने किताब पाई.

This organization is steadily gaining support in rural areas.

Lexical perfective versus achieved-ability perfective

Lexical transitive पाना takes ने in a canonical perfective, with an unmarked object controlling agreement: उसने सफलता पाई. Modal bare stem + पाना normally keeps the achiever unmarked and makes that achiever control पाना: वह पहुँच पाई.

लेखिका ने कम उम्र में प्रसिद्धि पाई।

lekhikā ne kam umr meṃ prasiddhi pāī.

The writer achieved fame at a young age.

लेखिका समय पर कार्यक्रम में पहुँच पाई।

lekhikā samay par kāryakram meṃ pahũc pāī.

The writer managed to reach the event on time.

The first has ergative ने and object agreement with feminine प्रसिद्धि. The second is the modal construction: no ने, and feminine लेखिका controls पाई.

💡
Ask whether पाना itself means “obtain” or whether it evaluates another verb's result. That semantic decision predicts the perfective alignment.

I hope you achieve success in your work. (familiar)

शायद मैं आज उससे बात कर पाऊँ।

śāyad maĩ āj usse bāt kar pāū̃.

Perhaps I'll manage to speak with them today.

Imperatives पा, पाओ, पाइए are grammatically possible with lexical “attain,” but direct commands such as “obtain success!” are pragmatically limited and often sound literary or rhetorical. Modal पाना does not ordinarily form a command to “manage.” Common non-finite forms are पाता, पाया, पाते हुए, पाकर, पाने, पाने वाला.

Negation is especially frequent with modal पाना because it reports a failed result. A question can ask whether achievement was actually possible, not merely whether the actor had a general skill.

क्या आप समय रहते समस्या सुलझा पाए?

kyā āp samay rahte samasyā suljhā pāe?

Were you able to solve the problem in time?

Achievement modality and compounds

Modal पाना follows a bare verb stem: कर पाना, समझ पाना, पहुँच पाना. Perfective and negative forms are particularly common because they evaluate a bounded attempt.

कई कोशिशों के बाद हम सही फ़ाइल खोल पाए।

kaī kośiśoṃ ke bād ham sahī fāil khol pāe.

After several attempts, we managed to open the right file.

मैं शोर के कारण पूरा नाम सुन नहीं पाया।

maĩ śor ke kāraṇ pūrā nām sun nahīṃ pāyā.

Because of the noise, I couldn't hear the full name. (male speaker)

The achieved-ability page develops habitual and perfective nuances. Lexical पा लेना can emphasize successfully securing something: मौका पा लेना. A common idiom is काबू पाना “gain control over / overcome.”

Modern Hindi has no single everyday causative of पाना meaning “make obtain” across all frames. दिलाना normally expresses getting or securing something for someone.

सलाहकार ने हमें ज़रूरी अनुमति दिलाई।

salāhkār ne hameṃ zarūrī anumati dilāī.

The adviser secured the necessary permission for us.

Key Takeaways

Lexical पाना means attain or obtain and takes ordinary transitive perfective alignment. Modal bare stem + पाना means manage to and normally agrees with an unmarked achiever without ने. The shared paradigm includes पाया, पाऊँ, पाओ, पाएँ; argument structure, not the surface form alone, identifies the use.
