मिलना milnā: to meet and be received

मिलना can mean “meet,” “be received/get,” “be available/found,” or “match/blend.” These are related by the idea of entities coming together, but their participant frames differ. The verb is intransitive: its perfective has no ने, and the unmarked entity that meets, arrives, or becomes available controls agreement.

Principal parts and core frames

infinitiveमिलनाडॉक्टर से मिलना
habitualमिलता / मिलती / मिलतेवह मिलती है
perfectiveमिला / मिली / मिले / मिलींचाबी मिली
conjunctiveमिलकरमिलकर काम करना

For a one-sided meeting, the other person commonly takes से: मैं डॉक्टर से मिला. With a plural or reciprocal subject, no से phrase is required: हम कल मिले “We met yesterday.”

मैं हर महीने अपने पुराने शिक्षक से मिलता हूँ।

maĩ har mahīne apne purāne śikṣak se miltā hū̃.

I meet my former teacher every month. (male speaker)

हम दोनों पहली बार लखनऊ में मिले थे।

ham donoṃ pahlī bār lakhnaū meṃ mile the.

The two of us first met in Lucknow.

💡
With singular मैं, use किसी से मिलना. With a reciprocal plural subject, हम मिले already means that the participants met one another.

Receiving and availability: dative recipient

For “receive/get,” the recipient takes को, while the received item is the unmarked grammatical subject and controls agreement.

मुझे कल आपका संदेश मिला।

mujhe kal āpkā sandeś milā.

I received your message yesterday.

रीना को नई नौकरी मिली है।

rīnā ko naī naukrī milī hai.

Reena has got a new job.

छात्रों को समय पर प्रमाण-पत्र मिले।

chātroṃ ko samay par pramāṇ-patr mile.

The students received their certificates on time.

English makes the recipient the subject of get/receive. Hindi marks it with को; masculine संदेश, feminine नौकरी, and plural प्रमाण-पत्र control मिलना.

The same frame expresses availability or successful finding.

क्या यहाँ बिना चीनी की चाय मिलती है?

kyā yahā̃ binā cīnī kī cāy miltī hai?

Is tea without sugar available here?

💡
In मुझे किताब मिली, do not make मिलना first person or feminine because of the recipient's identity. The unmarked item किताब controls मिली.

masculine singularमिलता हैमिल रहा हैमिला
feminine singularमिलती हैमिल रही हैमिली
masculine/mixed pluralमिलते हैंमिल रहे हैंमिले

हमें अभी तक होटल के कमरे नहीं मिल रहे हैं।

hameṃ abhī tak hoṭal ke kamre nahīṃ mil rahe haiṃ.

We still aren't finding/getting hotel rooms.

Progressive मिलना is natural for an ongoing search or developing availability; a scheduled social meeting more often uses मिलने जा रहा हूँ or another explicit arrangement.

Negation and questions across frames

Negation denies the particular relation supplied by the frame. हम नहीं मिले means the meeting did not take place; मुझे टिकट नहीं मिला means no ticket was received or found. Because the latter is intransitive, Hindi does not insert a transitive “get” subject modeled on English.

कल समय नहीं मिला, इसलिए हम बात नहीं कर सके।

kal samay nahīṃ milā, islie ham bāt nahīṃ kar sake.

We didn't get time yesterday, so we couldn't talk.

क्या आपको मेरा ईमेल मिला?

kyā āpko merā īmel milā?

Did you receive my email?

The question's masculine मिला agrees with ईमेल, not honorific आपको. The same controller principle is developed under dative experiencer subjects.

I'll meet you next week. (female speaker)

अगर हमें अच्छी सीटें मिलें, तो तुरंत बुक कर देना।

agar hameṃ acchī sīṭeṃ mileṃ, to turant buk kar denā.

If we get good seats, book them right away. (familiar)

Imperatives are intimate मिल, familiar मिलो, and respectful मिलिए, though direct commands to “meet” require a sensible social context. Common non-finite forms are मिलता, मिला, मिलते हुए, मिलकर, मिलने, मिलने वाला.

Causatives and compounds

मिलाना brings things together: mix, match, connect, or introduce. मिलवाना commonly means arrange or bring about a meeting or introduction. It can mention a further intermediary, but everyday मिलवाना does not require one to be expressed.

कृपया चाय में थोड़ा दूध मिला दीजिए।

kripyā cāy meṃ thoṛā dūdh milā dījie.

Please mix a little milk into the tea.

एक मित्र ने मुझे उस संपादक से मिलवाया।

ek mitr ne mujhe us sampādak se milvāyā.

A friend introduced me to that editor.

Compound मिल जाना often presents successful finding, receipt, or availability as achieved.

काफ़ी खोजने के बाद पुरानी रसीद मिल गई।

kāfī khojne ke bād purānī rasīd mil gaī.

After a long search, the old receipt was found.

An idiom हाथ मिलाना means shake hands and can also mean join forces. It uses transitive मिलाना, not intransitive मिलना.

Another common extension is दिल मिलना, “be of one mind / feel emotionally compatible.” It is generally positive and reciprocal, unlike the purely spatial idea of two objects touching.

Common Mistakes

❌ मैं कल डॉक्टर को मिला।

Incorrect in the neutral ‘meet with the doctor’ frame — use डॉक्टर से.

✅ मैं कल डॉक्टर से मिला।

maĩ kal ḍokṭar se milā.

I met the doctor yesterday. (male speaker)

❌ सीमा ने कल वकील से मिली।

Incorrect — intransitive मिलना does not take ergative ने.

✅ सीमा कल वकील से मिली।

sīmā kal vakīl se milī.

Seema met the lawyer yesterday.

❌ मुझे नई नौकरी मिला।

Incorrect — feminine नौकरी controls मिली.

✅ मुझे नई नौकरी मिली।

mujhe naī naukrī milī.

I got a new job.

❌ उसने मुझे प्रबंधक से मिला।

Incorrect — arranging an introduction requires a causative form.

✅ उसने मुझे प्रबंधक से मिलवाया।

usne mujhe prabandhak se milvāyā.

They introduced me to the manager.

Key Takeaways

मिलना is intransitive and has no perfective ने. A meeting partner commonly takes से; a reciprocal plural subject can stand alone. In receiving and availability frames, the recipient takes को and the item controls agreement. Distinguish intransitive मिलना from transitive मिलाना and arranged-introduction मिलवाना.
