Hindi marks the onset of an event with oblique infinitive in -ने + लगना: हँसने लगना “begin laughing,” बारिश होने लगना “begin to rain,” समझने लगना “begin to understand.” The infinitive supplies the unfolding event; intransitive लगना locates its left boundary and carries agreement, aspect, tense, and mood.
English allows both start to laugh and start laughing. Hindi does not copy either English form directly: it neither uses a bare stem nor leaves the infinitive in citation -ना. More importantly, perfective लगा says that the beginning occurred; it does not say that the embedded event reached its own endpoint. The broader polysemy of the final verb is mapped on the लगना reference page.
Form: oblique infinitive plus inflected लगना
Change citation -ना to -ने, then add the appropriate form of लगना:
| Lexical verb | Onset predicate | Typical value |
|---|---|---|
| बोलना | बोलने लगा | began speaking |
| खुलना | खुलने लगी | began opening |
| बदलना | बदलने लगे | began changing |
| होना | होने लगा | began to be/become |
संगीत बजते ही लोग नाचने लगे।
saṅgīt bajte hī log nācne lage.
As soon as the music started, people began to dance.
सुबह होते-होते धुंध छँटने लगी।
subah hote-hote dhundh chãṭne lagī.
By morning, the fog began to clear.
Only लगना is finite. The -ने form does not agree and does not itself locate the event in time. This construction is therefore one complex predicate, not two coordinated clauses meaning “dance and attach” or “clear and seem.”
लगना isolates the beginning, not the completion
Compare a simple perfective with an onset predicate:
मीरा अचानक हँसी।
mīrā acānak hãsī.
Meera suddenly laughed.
मीरा मेरी बात सुनकर हँसने लगी।
mīrā merī bāt sunkar hãsne lagī.
Meera began laughing when she heard what I said.
The first presents one bounded laugh event. The second presents the transition from not laughing to laughing; the subsequent laughter may continue. Likewise, दरवाज़ा खुला reports an opening as a whole, whereas दरवाज़ा खुलने लगा zooms in on the first stage of opening.
पुराना दरवाज़ा धीरे-धीरे खुलने लगा।
purānā darvāzā dhīre-dhīre khulne lagā.
The old door began to open slowly.
कुछ देर बाद दरवाज़ा पूरी तरह खुल गया।
kuch der bād darvāzā pūrī tarah khul gayā.
A little later, the door opened completely.
These can describe successive phases of one event. लगना supplies inception; resultative जाना supplies the reached endpoint. A speaker who uses them indiscriminately erases that aspectual contrast.
Which lexical events fit?
Activities and gradual changes combine freely with onset लगना: speaking, laughing, working, raining, warming, improving, understanding. Stable states are possible only when context makes their acquisition gradual or newly observable.
कुछ हफ़्तों में आरव स्थानीय बोली समझने लगा।
kuch haftoṃ meṃ ārav sthānīya bolī samajhne lagā.
Within a few weeks, Aarav began to understand the local dialect.
Here समझना is construed as an emerging capacity, not a timeless state. A punctual achievement is less compatible on one isolated occasion. वह स्टेशन पहुँचने लगा does not neutrally mean “he began to arrive at the station.” It needs a repeatable or prospective context:
नई बस सेवा शुरू होने के बाद वह दफ़्तर समय पर पहुँचने लगा।
naī bas sevā śurū hone ke bād vah daftar samay par pahũcne lagā.
After the new bus service started, he began arriving at the office on time.
Repeated arrivals form a new habit, so an onset is available. For one arrival, use पहुँचा or resultative पहुँच गया.
The shared subject controls agreement
The participant who begins the embedded action is also the subject of intransitive लगना. It stays unmarked even when the embedded lexical verb is transitive.
किरण पुरानी डायरी पढ़ने लगी।
kiraṇ purānī ḍāyarī paṛhne lagī.
Kiran began reading the old diary.
दोनों बच्चे दीवार पर चित्र बनाने लगे।
donoṃ bacce dīvār par citr banāne lage.
Both children began drawing pictures on the wall.
There is no किरण ने, because perfective लगी belongs to intransitive लगना, not directly to transitive पढ़ना. Feminine Kiran controls लगी; masculine/mixed plural बच्चे controls लगे. The object डायरी remains inside the non-finite event and does not control the matrix verb.
Honorific agreement works normally:
दादी पुरानी तस्वीरों की कहानियाँ सुनाने लगीं।
dādī purānī tasvīroṃ kī kahāniyā̃ sunāne lagīṃ.
Grandmother began telling stories about the old photographs. (honorific)
Singular दादी takes respectful plural लगीं. The feminine plural object कहानियाँ happens to share those features, but honorific subject agreement is the grammatical source here.
TAM can target the onset itself
Perfective लगा presents one transition into the activity. Habitual लगता है presents recurring onset, often after a trigger. Progressive लग रहा है portrays the transition as imminent or currently developing. Future and subjunctive forms predict or entertain a possible beginning.
तनाव बढ़ते ही वह नाख़ून चबाने लगता है।
tanāv baṛhte hī vah nāxūn cabāne lagtā hai.
Whenever the stress rises, he starts biting his nails.
लगता है बच्चा अब रोने लग रहा है।
lagtā hai baccā ab rone lag rahā hai.
It looks as though the child is starting to cry now.
ठंड बढ़ेगी तो झील का पानी जमने लगेगा।
ṭhaṇḍ baṛhegī to jhīl kā pānī jamne lagegā.
If it gets colder, the lake water will begin to freeze.
The progressive example contains two different uses of लगना: impersonal लगता है “it seems” and onset रोने लग रहा है “is starting to cry.” Their frames must not be collapsed.
Negation and scope
Neutral negation normally comes before inflected लगना, after the infinitive: बोलने नहीं लगा “did not begin to speak.” It denies the onset, not necessarily the lexical action at every other time.
सवाल दोहराने पर भी गवाह बोलने नहीं लगा।
savāl dohrāne par bhī gavāh bolne nahīṃ lagā.
Even after the question was repeated, the witness did not begin to speak.
कृपया हर छोटी बात पर बहस करने मत लगिए।
kripyā har choṭī bāt par bahas karne mat lagie.
Please don't start arguing over every small matter.
The first reports a completed opportunity in which no onset occurred. The respectful negative imperative places मत before लगिए. English learners often negate only the embedded idea and produce an unnatural order; Hindi treats the onset predicate as the relevant scope unit.
Contrast उसने बोलना बंद नहीं किया “he did not stop speaking.” Onset and cessation locate opposite boundaries and are not logical substitutes.
Speaker attitude and register
Onset लगना itself is neutral and common in every register, but adverbs, repetition, and questions can convey approval, surprise, or annoyance. In conversation, फिर ... लगे? often criticizes the return of an unwanted habit.
तुम फिर बिना पूछे सलाह देने लगे?
tum phir binā pūche salāh dene lage?
Have you started giving advice without being asked again? (informal, annoyed)
नहीं, मैं तो बस वजह समझाने लगा था।
nahīṃ, maĩ to bas vajah samjhāne lagā thā.
No, I was only beginning to explain the reason. (informal)
ठीक है, मगर बात घुमाने मत लगना।
ṭhīk hai, magar bāt ghumāne mat lagnā.
All right, but don't start beating around the bush. (informal)
The past progressive-like समझाने लगा था locates an onset in a past setting; familiar infinitive imperative मत लगना warns against entering a behavior. Neither form says that the explanation or evasion was completed.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping the citation infinitive
❌ बारिश होना लगी।
Incorrect — onset लगना selects the oblique infinitive होने.
✅ दोपहर बाद हल्की बारिश होने लगी।
dopahar bād halkī bāriś hone lagī.
A light rain began in the afternoon.
2. Adding ergative ने because the embedded verb is transitive
❌ पूजा ने पत्र लिखने लगी।
Incorrect — intransitive लगी heads the onset predicate, so पूजा stays unmarked.
✅ पूजा संपादक को पत्र लिखने लगी।
pūjā sampādak ko patr likhne lagī.
Pooja began writing a letter to the editor.
3. Treating onset as completion
❌ पौधा खिलने लगा, इसलिए सारे फूल खिल चुके थे।
Incorrect inference — the beginning of flowering does not entail that all flowers had opened.
✅ पौधा खिलने लगा, लेकिन कई कलियाँ अभी बंद थीं।
paudhā khilne lagā, lekin kaī kaliyā̃ abhī band thīṃ.
The plant began to flower, but several buds were still closed.
4. Making लगना agree with the embedded object
❌ मोहन नई किताब पढ़ने लगी।
Incorrect — masculine subject मोहन controls लगा; feminine किताब is embedded.
✅ मोहन नई किताब पढ़ने लगा।
mohan naī kitāb paṛhne lagā.
Mohan began reading the new book.
Key Takeaways
- Onset uses oblique infinitive -ने + लगना, not citation -ना or a bare stem.
- The construction locates the beginning of the embedded event; it does not entail that event's completion.
- Intransitive लगना is the finite head, so the shared subject stays unmarked and controls agreement—even when the lexical infinitive is transitive.
- Activities and gradual changes combine readily; punctual achievements require a repeated, prospective, or coerced process reading.
- Place नहीं/मत with the inflected onset predicate to deny or prohibit the beginning.
