लगना participates in several distinct predicate frames. With a stimulus and often a को-marked experiencer, it means “seem, look, feel”: मुझे कमरा छोटा लगता है. After an oblique infinitive in -ने, it marks the beginning of an event: वह हँसने लगी. The same verb supplies the finite grammar, but each construction organizes its participants differently.
Seeming: what produces the impression?
In the perception frame, the thing evaluated is an unmarked subject. A person whose impression is being reported appears with को and may be omitted when the viewpoint is obvious.
मुझे यह रास्ता सुरक्षित लगता है।
mujhe yah rāstā surakṣit lagtā hai.
This route seems safe to me.
सोनल को नई योजना व्यावहारिक लगी।
sonal ko naī yojnā vyāvahārik lagī.
The new plan seemed practical to Sonal.
ये गलियाँ रात में सुनसान लगती हैं।
ye galiyā̃ rāt meṃ sunsān lagtī haiṃ.
These lanes seem deserted at night.
Masculine रास्ता gives लगता, feminine योजना gives perfective लगी, and feminine plural गलियाँ gives लगती हैं. The experiencer मुझे/सोनल को never determines this agreement.
| Stimulus | Habitual/present form | Perfective form |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | अच्छा लगता है | अच्छा लगा |
| feminine singular | अच्छी लगती है | अच्छी लगी |
| masculine / mixed plural | अच्छे लगते हैं | अच्छे लगे |
| feminine plural | अच्छी लगती हैं | अच्छी लगीं |
Propositional seeming: मुझे लगता है कि ...
An entire proposition can be the content of the impression. The common frame is experiencer + को + लगता है कि + finite clause. With a clausal complement there is no gendered noun controller, so default masculine singular लगता है appears.
मुझे लगता है कि ट्रेन देर से आएगी।
mujhe lagtā hai ki ṭren der se āegī.
I think the train will arrive late.
क्या आपको लगा कि उसने बात छिपाई?
kyā āpko lagā ki usne bāt chipāī?
Did it seem to you that he hid something?
हमें नहीं लगता कि आज फैसला होगा।
hameṃ nahīṃ lagtā ki āj faislā hogā.
We don't think a decision will be made today.
English normally uses a personal verb think. Hindi literally presents an impression as arising “to” someone. The embedded clause has its own tense, aspect, and agreement; लगना only frames the speaker's assessment.
Beginning: oblique infinitive + लगना
For event onset, change the infinitive ending -ना to oblique -ने and add लगना: बोलना → बोलने लगना, बारिश होना → बारिश होने लगना. The participant who begins the event controls लगना.
सवाल सुनते ही बच्चा हँसने लगा।
savāl sunte hī baccā hãsne lagā.
As soon as he heard the question, the child began to laugh.
बिजली जाते ही मशीनें रुकने लगीं।
bijlī jāte hī maśīneṃ rukne lagīṃ.
As soon as the power went out, the machines began to stop.
अक्टूबर में शामें ठंडी होने लगती हैं।
akṭūbar meṃ śāmeṃ ṭhaṇḍī hone lagtī haiṃ.
In October, the evenings begin to get cold.
The lexical event sits inside the -ने infinitive; लगना contributes onset; perfective or habitual morphology plus an auxiliary supplies viewpoint and time. Hindi thus builds “began to laugh” as laugh-INF.OBL + begin-PFV, not as one conjugated equivalent of English began.
Tense, aspect, and questions with onset
Perfective लगा/लगी/लगे/लगीं presents the transition into the event. Habitual लगता है describes a repeated or characteristic onset. Progressive लग रहा है can zoom in on a beginning that is currently developing.
हल्की बारिश होते ही छत टपकने लगती है।
halkī bāriś hote hī chat ṭapakne lagtī hai.
As soon as it rains lightly, the roof starts leaking.
दवा लेने के बाद दर्द कम होने लगा है।
davā lene ke bād dard kam hone lagā hai.
After taking the medicine, the pain has begun to decrease.
क्या बच्चे अब अपने-आप पढ़ने लगे हैं?
kyā bacce ab apne-āp paṛhne lage haiṃ?
Have the children started studying on their own now?
The present perfect होने लगा है says that the onset has occurred and remains relevant now. It does not mean that the event is finished. Broader discourse effects belong to infinitive plus लगना onset.
Negation has more than one scope
With seeming, नहीं लगता rejects an impression. With onset, नहीं लगा says that the beginning did not occur. If the embedded event itself is negative, speakers often choose clearer wording rather than stacking negatives ambiguously.
यह काम अब उतना मुश्किल नहीं लगता।
yah kām ab utnā muśkil nahīṃ lagtā.
This task no longer seems so difficult.
घंटी बजने के बाद भी लोग बाहर निकलने नहीं लगे।
ghaṇṭī bajne ke bād bhī log bāhar nikalne nahīṃ lage.
Even after the bell rang, people did not begin to go outside.
The second sentence denies the onset. It does not claim that people began an activity of “not going out.”
Other lexical frames are not freely interchangeable
The same spelling occurs in lexical expressions such as ठंड लगना “feel cold,” समय लगना “take time,” चोट लगना “get hurt,” and फ़ोन लगना “the call connects.” Their argument structures must be learned with the expression.
इस काम में कम-से-कम दो घंटे लगेंगे।
is kām meṃ kam-se-kam do ghaṇṭe lageṅge.
This work will take at least two hours.
Here plural दो घंटे controls लगेंगे. There is neither a “seeming” stimulus nor an onset infinitive.
Common Mistakes
Making the experiencer control agreement
❌ मुझे यह कहानी लंबी लगता हूँ।
Incorrect — मुझे is dative; feminine कहानी controls लगती है.
✅ मुझे यह कहानी लंबी लगती है।
mujhe yah kahānī lambī lagtī hai.
This story seems long to me.
Using -ना before onset लगना
❌ बच्चा रोना लगा।
Incorrect — onset लगना selects the oblique infinitive in -ने.
✅ बच्चा रोने लगा।
baccā rone lagā.
The child began to cry.
Leaving plural onset agreement singular
❌ सारी बत्तियाँ झपकने लगा।
Incorrect — feminine plural बत्तियाँ requires लगीं.
✅ सारी बत्तियाँ झपकने लगीं।
sārī battiyā̃ jhapakne lagīṃ.
All the lights began to flicker.
Treating लगता है as a finite English-style “I think” without को
❌ मैं लगता हूँ कि दुकान बंद है।
Incorrect for ‘I think’ — the experiencer takes को and the predicate is default लगता है.
✅ मुझे लगता है कि दुकान बंद है।
mujhe lagtā hai ki dukān band hai.
I think the shop is closed.
Key Takeaways
In the “seem” frame, an optional को-marked experiencer receives an impression and the stimulus controls agreement. A clausal stimulus gives default लगता है. In the “begin” frame, use -ने + लगना, and let the participant beginning the event control लगना. Both are layered predicates, but their complements and agreement structures are different.
