बनना रहना लगना as copular verbs

Hindi can link a subject to a role or property with more than होना “be.” बनना presents entry into a new state, रहना presents continuation of a state, and copular लगना presents an appearance, impression, or felt evaluation. Their English matches—become, remain/stay, and seem/feel—are useful, but the three Hindi verbs encode different event structures and are not interchangeable synonyms.

Three relations, not three decorative alternatives

VerbCore relationTypical frame
बननाchange into a role or stateवह डॉक्टर बनी
रहनाcontinue in a stateवह शांत रही
लगनाappear or feel a certain wayवह थकी लगी

आरती पिछले साल विभाग की प्रमुख बनी।

ārtī pichle sāl vibhāg kī pramukh banī.

Aarti became head of the department last year.

बहस के दौरान आरती शांत रही।

bahas ke daurān ārtī śānt rahī.

Aarti remained calm during the discussion.

आज आरती थोड़ी थकी लग रही है।

āj ārtī thoṛī thakī lag rahī hai.

Aarti looks a little tired today.

The first clause describes a transition, the second persistence, and the third an observer's current impression. Replacing one verb with another changes the claim: प्रमुख रही says she continued as head, not that she became head; थकी बनी is not the neutral way to say she looked tired.

Ask whether the sentence profiles a boundary, a duration, or an impression. A boundary favors बनना, continuing duration favors रहना, and an impression or felt evaluation favors लगना.

बनना: entering a role or resulting state

बनना is intransitive “become” and can also describe something being formed or made. A role noun usually appears without an article or postposition.

मेरा छोटा भाई इंजीनियर बनना चाहता है।

merā choṭā bhāī iñjīniyar bannā cāhtā hai.

My younger brother wants to become an engineer.

नेहा जल्द ही टीम की कप्तान बनेगी।

nehā jald hī ṭīm kī kaptān banegī.

Neha will soon become the team captain.

बारिश के बाद कच्चा रास्ता कीचड़ बन गया।

bāriś ke bād kaccā rāstā kīcaṛ ban gayā.

After the rain, the dirt road turned into mud.

In the perfective, बना/बनी/बने/बनीं agrees with the ordinary unmarked subject: feminine आरती बनी, masculine रास्ता बन गया. The compound बन जाना highlights attainment of the resulting state. It is not required after every role noun; simple बनना is enough in डॉक्टर बनना.

Do not confuse intransitive बनना with transitive बनाना “make”: रवि खाना बनाता है means “Ravi cooks/makes food,” not “Ravi becomes food.” Their stems and argument structures are different.

रहना: persistence rather than simple identity

Copular रहना says that a subject stays in a location or continues to have a property. The property can be an invariant adjective or an agreeing participial/adjectival form.

कृपया दरवाज़ा बंद रहने दीजिए।

kripyā darvāzā band rahne dījie.

Please let the door remain closed. (formal/polite)

गर्मी में ये दुकानें देर तक खुली रहती हैं।

garmī meṃ ye dukāneṃ der tak khulī rahtī haiṃ.

In summer, these shops stay open late.

मुश्किल समय में भी वे दोनों साथ रहे।

muśkil samay meṃ bhī ve donoṃ sāth rahe.

Even during the difficult period, the two of them stayed together. (male or mixed pair)

In खुली रहती हैं, feminine plural दुकानें controls both खुली and habitual रहती, while plural present हैं closes the predicate. This is a layered structure: property खुली + lexical/copular stem रह- + habitual -ती + auxiliary हैं. English packages it as stay open, but Hindi visibly expresses more grammatical layers.

In property and location predicates, simple होना presents the state without asserting persistence; रहना adds persistence. Compare दुकान खुली है “the shop is open” with दुकान खुली रहती है “the shop generally remains open.”

लगना: appearance and experiencer-based evaluation

Copular लगना can take a subject whose appearance is evaluated: कमरा बड़ा लगता है “the room seems large.” It also commonly includes a dative experiencer with को: मुझे कमरा बड़ा लगता है “the room seems large to me.” The experiencer is not the agreement controller.

यह कमरा तस्वीरों में बड़ा लगता है।

yah kamrā tasvīroṃ meṃ baṛā lagtā hai.

This room looks large in photographs.

मुझे यह कहानी अधूरी लगती है।

mujhe yah kahānī adhūrī lagtī hai.

This story seems incomplete to me.

बच्चों को ये सवाल आसान लगे।

baccoṃ ko ye savāl āsān lage.

These questions seemed easy to the children.

Masculine कमरा selects बड़ा लगता, feminine कहानी selects अधूरी लगती, and plural सवाल selects perfective लगे. First-person मुझे and plural बच्चों को identify experiencers but do not control agreement. English makes “I/the children” the subject of think/find in some translations, so following English subjecthood gives the wrong Hindi form.

The same lexeme has other uses: ठंड लगना “feel cold,” फ़ोन लगना “connect,” and infinitive + लगना “begin to.” Those are not all copular and have construction-specific behavior; onset लगना belongs under लगना: seeming and beginning.

💡
In मुझे यह किताब अच्छी लगती है, do not choose लगता हूँ because English says “I like.” Hindi structures the experiencer as मुझे and makes feminine किताब the agreement controller: अच्छी लगती है.

Agreement and a compact paradigm

The following present habitual forms show the productive agreement pattern. The exact complement changes naturally with each verb.

Controllerबननारहनालगना
masculine singularबनता हैरहता हैलगता है
feminine singularबनती हैरहती हैलगती है
masculine/mixed pluralबनते हैंरहते हैंलगते हैं
feminine pluralबनती हैंरहती हैंलगती हैं

These are layered present habitual predicates, not full lexeme-by-lexeme conjugations. Perfective, future, imperative, and non-finite paradigms belong in Verb Reference. The productive principle is that the eligible unmarked subject or stimulus controls gender-number agreement; the finite auxiliary supplies person/number and tense where the construction uses one.

Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts

यह रंग कमरे में अच्छा लगता है।

yah raṅg kamre meṃ acchā lagtā hai.

This color looks good in the room.

यह रंग कमरे में अच्छा नहीं लगता।

yah raṅg kamre meṃ acchā nahīṃ lagtā.

This color does not look good in the room.

क्या यह रंग कमरे में अच्छा लगता है?

kyā yah raṅg kamre meṃ acchā lagtā hai?

Does this color look good in the room?

The present habitual negative naturally permits omission of है, while the affirmative and neutral question retain it. This omission is specific to common habitual negatives; it does not mean that auxiliaries are optional everywhere. Clause-initial क्या asks a yes–no question without English-style inversion.

Infinitives are not finite replacements

The forms बनना, रहना, लगना are infinitives. They are grammatical under another predicate, as in बनना चाहता है, but not as complete present assertions.

अकेले रहना हमेशा आसान नहीं होता।

akele rahnā hameśā āsān nahīṃ hotā.

Living alone is not always easy.

Here रहना heads an infinitival subject, while habitual होता is the finite predicate. For “He lives alone,” use वह अकेला रहता है, not वह अकेला रहना.

Common Mistakes

Using होना for a change of state

❌ सीमा पिछले साल प्रबंधक थी।

Wrong for the intended event ‘Seema became manager’; this only says she was manager.

✅ सीमा पिछले साल प्रबंधक बनी।

sīmā pichle sāl prabandhak banī.

Seema became manager last year.

Using बनाना instead of intransitive बनना

❌ मोहन डॉक्टर बनाना चाहता है।

Incorrect for ‘Mohan wants to become a doctor’; बनाना means ‘make.’

✅ मोहन डॉक्टर बनना चाहता है।

mohan ḍokṭar bannā cāhtā hai.

Mohan wants to become a doctor.

Letting the dative experiencer control लगना

❌ मुझे यह कुर्सी आरामदायक लगता हूँ।

Incorrect — मुझे is not the controller; feminine कुर्सी requires लगती है.

✅ मुझे यह कुर्सी आरामदायक लगती है।

mujhe yah kursī ārāmdāyak lagtī hai.

This chair feels comfortable to me.

Losing feminine plural agreement with रहना

❌ ये खिड़कियाँ दिन भर खुला रहता है।

Incorrect — feminine plural खिड़कियाँ requires खुली रहती हैं.

✅ ये खिड़कियाँ दिन भर खुली रहती हैं।

ye khiṛkiyā̃ din bhar khulī rahtī haiṃ.

These windows stay open all day.

Using an infinitive as a finite predicate

❌ वह हमेशा शांत रहना।

Incorrect — रहना is non-finite in a plain present statement.

✅ वह हमेशा शांत रहता है।

vah hameśā śānt rahtā hai.

He always remains calm.

Key Takeaways

  • बनना marks transition, रहना persistence, and लगना an impression or felt evaluation.
  • These verbs take ordinary tense-aspect and agreement layers; they are not invariant particles.
  • With experiencer लगना, the को-marked experiencer does not control agreement.
  • Infinitives in -ना require a larger construction; a neutral finite present normally needs habitual morphology and an auxiliary.
