The copula होना overview

The infinitive होना (honā) covers several related functions: it links a subject to an identity or property, asserts existence or location, describes an event's occurrence, and supplies tense or mood as an auxiliary in a layered verb phrase. English often uses be in the translations, but the two systems do not match one-for-one. The first task is to identify which job होना is doing.

The irregular present copula

The present forms are historically related to होना but must be learned as a small irregular paradigm.

SubjectPresent copulaExample
मैंहूँमैं तैयार हूँ
हमहैंहम तैयार हैं
तूहैतू तैयार है
तुमहोतुम तैयार हो
आपहैंआप तैयार हैं
यह/वहहैवह तैयार है
ये/वेहैंवे तैयार हैं

मैं इस स्कूल में नया हूँ।

maĩ is skūl meṃ nayā hū̃.

I am new at this school. (male speaker)

हम आज जल्दी तैयार हैं।

ham āj jaldī taiyār haiṃ.

We are ready early today.

आपकी सीट खिड़की के पास है।

āpkī sīṭ khiṛkī ke pās hai.

Your seat is near the window.

The present auxiliary marks person, number, and honorificity but not gender. Gender can appear on the predicate adjective: a female speaker says मैं नई हूँ, while a male speaker says मैं नया हूँ.

💡
Do not learn है as the universal word for “is/am/are.” Learn the subject pairings मैं हूँ, तुम हो, वह है, हम/आप/वे हैं as complete units.

Identity and classification

The copula links a subject to a noun phrase that identifies or classifies it. Hindi normally has no equivalent of English a/an.

मेरी बहन डॉक्टर है।

merī bahan ḍokṭar hai.

My sister is a doctor.

ये दोनों हमारे पड़ोसी हैं।

ye donoṃ hamāre paṛosī haiṃ.

These two are our neighbors.

The noun डॉक्टर remains bare; inserting एक would normally add the numeral or discourse meaning “one/a certain,” not simply reproduce the English article.

An adjectival predicate agrees if the adjective belongs to a declinable class.

कमरा छोटा है, लेकिन खिड़कियाँ बड़ी हैं।

kamrā choṭā hai, lekin khiṛkiyā̃ baṛī haiṃ.

The room is small, but the windows are large.

Masculine singular छोटा and feminine plural बड़ी agree with their respective subjects. The copula completes the finite present predicate.

Location, existence, and possession

With a locative phrase, होना locates an entity.

मेरी किताब मेज़ पर है।

merī kitāb mez par hai.

My book is on the table.

With the location first, the same verb can introduce existence or availability.

इस कमरे में दो खिड़कियाँ हैं।

is kamre meṃ do khiṛkiyā̃ haiṃ.

There are two windows in this room.

English inserts dummy there in an existential. Hindi needs no equivalent; plural खिड़कियाँ controls हैं. Possession is likewise built as a location-like relation rather than with a direct counterpart of English have.

मेरे पास अभी थोड़ा समय है।

mere pās abhī thoṛā samay hai.

I have a little time right now.

The possessed item समय, not possessor मेरे, controls singular है. The fuller possession patterns are treated under locative and possessive होना.

होना as “happen” or “take place”

As a lexical main verb, होना can mean “happen, occur, take place.” Its perfective forms agree with the event noun.

बैठक कल सुबह होगी।

baiṭhak kal subah hogī.

The meeting will take place tomorrow morning.

कल यहाँ एक छोटी दुर्घटना हुई।

kal yahā̃ ek choṭī durghaṭnā huī.

A minor accident happened here yesterday.

Feminine होगी/हुई agree with feminine बैठक/दुर्घटना. This is not merely an empty linking verb: it asserts the occurrence of an event.

हो जाना often presents a change as completed or a state as attained.

काम उम्मीद से पहले पूरा हो गया।

kām ummīd se pahle pūrā ho gayā.

The work was completed earlier than expected.

Here जाना is a vector contributing attainment/completion. It is not freely interchangeable with simple होना in every context.

होना as an auxiliary layer

After habitual, progressive, or perfect constructions, a form of होना supplies tense, person, number, or mood while another layer supplies the lexical event and aspect.

PredicateLayersInterpretation
काम करता हैकर- + habitual ता + हैworks / habitually does
काम कर रही हैकर- + progressive रही + हैis working
काम कर चुका हैकर- + completive चुका + हैhas finished doing the work
काम करता थाकर- + habitual ता + थाused to work

रोहन रोज़ बस से आता है।

rohan roz bas se ātā hai.

Rohan comes by bus every day.

रोहन अभी बस से आ रहा है।

rohan abhī bas se ā rahā hai.

Rohan is coming by bus now.

The English simple present versus progressive contrast is expressed by आता versus आ रहा, not by selecting a different form of है. The auxiliary is the same because both subjects are third-person singular and both clauses are present.

The past copula

Past forms था, थी, थे, थीं agree in gender and number.

ControllerPast form
masculine singularथा
feminine singularथी
masculine/mixed plural or masculine honorificथे
feminine pluralथीं

दुकान बंद थी और सारे ग्राहक बाहर थे।

dukān band thī aur sāre grāhak bāhar the.

The shop was closed, and all the customers were outside.

Present हूँ/हो/है/हैं chiefly distinguish person and number; past था/थी/थे/थीं display gender and number. Hindi therefore does not have one invariant past equivalent of English was/were.

Negatives and questions

Put नहीं before the copula in an ordinary negative identity, property, or location clause.

यह रास्ता सुरक्षित नहीं है।

yah rāstā surakṣit nahīṃ hai.

This route is not safe.

मेरी चाबियाँ बैग में नहीं हैं।

merī cābiyā̃ baig meṃ nahīṃ haiṃ.

My keys are not in the bag.

A yes–no question can add clause-initial क्या or rely on intonation without English-style inversion.

क्या आप कल खाली हैं?

kyā āp kal khālī haiṃ?

Are you free tomorrow?

यह आपकी छतरी है?

yah āpkī chatrī hai?

Is this your umbrella?

The subject stays before the predicate and the copula remains final. Formal headlines, labels, proverbs, and conversational fragments can omit a copula, but a neutral complete affirmative present sentence normally includes it.

Infinitive होना versus a finite copula

होना is an infinitive meaning “to be, become, happen.” It appears in embedded and modal constructions, not as a universal finite form.

अच्छा डॉक्टर होना आसान नहीं है।

acchā ḍokṭar honā āsān nahīṃ hai.

Being a good doctor is not easy.

Here होना is the infinitive inside the subject phrase अच्छा डॉक्टर होना, while final है makes the larger sentence finite. The two forms do different grammatical work.

💡
When होना means lexical “happen/become,” it contributes the event. When है/था closes कर रहा है/करता था, the earlier stem supplies the event and होना acts as the auxiliary layer.

Common Mistakes

Using है for every subject

❌ मैं आज तैयार है।

Incorrect — मैं requires हूँ.

✅ मैं आज तैयार हूँ।

maĩ āj taiyār hū̃.

I am ready today.

Omitting the copula from a neutral affirmative

❌ मेरी माँ अध्यापिका।

Incorrect as a neutral complete present statement; this sounds like a label or fragment.

✅ मेरी माँ अध्यापिका हैं।

merī mā̃ adhyāpikā haiṃ.

My mother is a teacher. (respectful reference)

Adding an English-style article

❌ वह एक डॉक्टर है।

Incorrect for neutral profession classification when एक has no intended ‘one/a certain’ meaning.

✅ वह डॉक्टर है।

vah ḍokṭar hai.

She is a doctor.

Using the infinitive as a finite copula

❌ वे मेरे पड़ोसी होना।

Incorrect — होना is an infinitive, not the required plural present copula.

✅ वे मेरे पड़ोसी हैं।

ve mere paṛosī haiṃ.

They are my neighbors.

Making possession follow English have

❌ मैं दो भाई हूँ।

Incorrect for ‘I have two brothers’; Hindi uses a possessive construction, not identity with हूँ.

✅ मेरे दो भाई हैं।

mere do bhāī haiṃ.

I have two brothers.

Key Takeaways

  • Present हूँ/हो/है/हैं mark person, number, and honorificity; past था/थी/थे/थीं mark gender and number.
  • होना links identities and properties, expresses location/existence/possession, and can lexically mean “happen.”
  • As an auxiliary, होना closes a layered predicate whose lexical and aspectual content appears earlier.
  • Neutral negatives keep the copula after नहीं, and questions preserve normal Hindi order rather than using English-style inversion.
