Existential होना

Existential होना asserts that an entity exists, is present, or is available in some place or domain: इस कमरे में दो खिड़कियाँ हैं “There are two windows in this room.” English inserts dummy there, but Hindi has no equivalent subject. The noun phrase being introduced—the existent—normally controls the copula.

The basic existential pattern

The most neutral order is:

location or domain + existent noun phrase + form of होना

मेज़ पर एक चिट्ठी है।

mez par ek ciṭṭhī hai.

There is a letter on the table.

इस इमारत में तीन लिफ़्टें हैं।

is imārat meṃ tīn lifṭeṃ haiṃ.

There are three elevators in this building.

आज के एजेंडे में एक ज़रूरी मुद्दा है।

āj ke ejeṇḍe meṃ ek zarūrī muddā hai.

There is an important issue on today's agenda.

The initial phrase can be a physical location such as मेज़ पर, a container such as इमारत में, or an abstract domain such as एजेंडे में. The new entity follows it. Singular चिट्ठी/मुद्दा selects है, while feminine plural लिफ़्टें selects हैं.

💡
Do not search for a Hindi word meaning existential English there. Start with the real setting—कमरे में, शहर में, सूची में—then name what exists and let that noun phrase determine the copula.

Agreement belongs to the existent

Present existential agreement distinguishes singular है from plural हैं. Past existential agreement also displays gender.

ExistentPresentPast
masculine singular कमराकमरा हैकमरा था
feminine singular दुकानदुकान हैदुकान थी
masculine plural कमरेकमरे हैंकमरे थे
feminine plural दुकानेंदुकानें हैंदुकानें थीं

पहले इस मोड़ पर एक छोटा डाकघर था।

pahle is moṛ par ek choṭā ḍākghar thā.

There used to be a small post office at this corner.

उस अलमारी में पुरानी तस्वीरें थीं।

us almārī meṃ purānī tasvīreṃ thīṃ.

There were old photographs in that cupboard.

The location never controls the copula. Feminine singular अलमारी is inside an oblique location phrase and does not select थी; feminine plural तस्वीरें selects थीं. Likewise, in इस शहर में अच्छे अस्पताल हैं, plural अस्पताल gives हैं, not singular शहर.

Existence, presence, and availability

The construction covers a continuum from literal existence to practical availability. Context supplies the most natural English rendering.

क्या पास में कोई एटीएम है?

kyā pās meṃ koī eṭīem hai?

Is there an ATM nearby?

रसोई में अभी चाय है।

rasoī meṃ abhī cāy hai.

There is tea in the kitchen right now.

इस योजना में सुधार की गुंजाइश है।

is yojnā meṃ sudhār kī guñjāiś hai.

There is room for improvement in this plan.

The second sentence can imply that tea is available, not merely that tea exists as a substance. The third is abstract: गुंजाइश “scope/room” exists within the plan. Hindi uses the same locative logic without an expletive pronoun.

This page treats productive existential syntax. Lexical meanings and full verb-by-verb paradigms belong in Verb Reference, while discourse choices about introducing a referent are expanded under existential sentences.

Existential versus ordinary locative clauses

The words can be similar, but information structure differs. An ordinary locative clause starts from an already identifiable entity and tells where it is. An existential clause establishes that an entity is present in a setting.

आपकी चाबी दराज़ में है।

āpkī cābī darāz meṃ hai.

Your key is in the drawer.

दराज़ में एक अतिरिक्त चाबी है।

darāz meṃ ek atirikt cābī hai.

There is a spare key in the drawer.

In the first sentence, आपकी चाबी is identifiable and the new information is its location. In the second, the drawer is the setting and एक अतिरिक्त चाबी is introduced. Hindi word order helps signal that difference; English uses be versus there be more overtly.

💡
Location-first order often introduces a new existent; entity-first order often locates a known entity. This is a discourse tendency, not an absolute ban: focus and context can license other orders.

Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts

इस ट्रेन में वाई-फ़ाई है।

is ṭren meṃ vāī-fāī hai.

There is Wi-Fi on this train.

इस ट्रेन में वाई-फ़ाई नहीं है।

is ṭren meṃ vāī-fāī nahīṃ hai.

There is no Wi-Fi on this train.

क्या इस ट्रेन में वाई-फ़ाई है?

kyā is ṭren meṃ vāī-fāī hai?

Is there Wi-Fi on this train?

Neutral negation keeps नहीं before the copula. Initial क्या marks a yes–no question, again without introducing a dummy there or inverting the copula.

With a negative indefinite, कोई plus singular नहीं है commonly means “there is no/there isn't any.” Plural count nouns retain plural agreement.

आज दफ़्तर में कोई नहीं है।

āj daftar meṃ koī nahīṃ hai.

There is nobody in the office today.

इस फ़ोल्डर में ज़रूरी दस्तावेज़ नहीं हैं।

is folḍar meṃ zarūrī dastāvez nahīṃ haiṃ.

There are no important documents in this folder.

Temporal and modal layers

Existential meaning is not restricted to present है/हैं. Past forms locate existence in the past; future forms can predict or infer availability.

अगले महीने शहर में नया पुस्तक मेला होगा।

agle mahīne śahar meṃ nayā pustak melā hogā.

There will be a new book fair in the city next month.

Here होगा agrees with masculine singular मेला and supplies future/modal interpretation. The existential relation still comes from the complete construction, not from a separate word meaning English there.

Infinitive होना versus a finite existential

The infinitive can name the state of existing or being present, but it does not complete a present assertion by itself.

हर कमरे में खिड़की होना ज़रूरी है।

har kamre meṃ khiṛkī honā zarūrī hai.

It is necessary for every room to have a window.

The embedded relation ends in infinitive होना; final है makes the whole necessity statement finite. Compare the direct assertion हर कमरे में खिड़की है “Every room has a window.”

Common Mistakes

Adding a pronoun for dummy English there

❌ वहाँ इस सड़क पर एक बैंक है।

Unnatural when वहाँ is only an attempted translation of dummy ‘there’; it redundantly adds a real location.

✅ इस सड़क पर एक बैंक है।

is saṛak par ek baiṅk hai.

There is a bank on this street.

Agreeing with the location

❌ इस डिब्बे में दो चाबियाँ है।

Incorrect — plural चाबियाँ, not singular डिब्बा, controls the copula.

✅ इस डिब्बे में दो चाबियाँ हैं।

is ḍibbe meṃ do cābiyā̃ haiṃ.

There are two keys in this box.

Missing feminine agreement in the past

❌ कमरे में एक मेज़ था।

Incorrect — feminine मेज़ requires थी.

✅ कमरे में एक मेज़ थी।

kamre meṃ ek mez thī.

There was a table in the room.

Copying English existential word order mechanically

❌ है एक समस्या इस योजना में।

Highly marked as a neutral sentence; Hindi normally establishes the domain before the new existent.

✅ इस योजना में एक समस्या है।

is yojnā meṃ ek samasyā hai.

There is a problem with this plan.

Using the infinitive as a finite existential

❌ यहाँ दो खाली कमरे होना।

Incorrect — होना is non-finite in a plain present assertion.

✅ यहाँ दो खाली कमरे हैं।

yahā̃ do khālī kamre haiṃ.

There are two vacant rooms here.

Key Takeaways

  • Build a neutral existential as setting + existent noun phrase + agreeing form of होना.
  • Hindi has no dummy counterpart of existential English there.
  • The existent, not the location, normally controls singular/plural and past gender agreement.
  • Location-first and entity-first clauses can describe similar scenes but package old and new information differently.
