Negative copula patterns

The neutral way to negate a Hindi copular predicate is to place invariant नहीं before the appropriate form of होना: नहीं हूँ, नहीं हो, नहीं है, नहीं हैं in the present and नहीं था, नहीं थी, नहीं थे, नहीं थीं in the past. Negation does not cancel agreement. The form after नहीं still reflects the construction's person, number, gender, or honorificity.

The core negative patterns

Subject or controllerPresentPast
मैंनहीं हूँनहीं था / थी
तुमनहीं होनहीं थे / थीं
वह / यहनहीं हैनहीं था / थी
हम / आप / वे / येनहीं हैंनहीं थे / थीं

The slashed past forms depend on gender. With a respectful singular आप, plural agreement remains even under negation.

मैं इस फ़ैसले से नाराज़ नहीं हूँ।

maĩ is faisle se nārāz nahīṃ hū̃.

I am not upset about this decision.

तुम आज अकेले नहीं हो।

tum āj akele nahīṃ ho.

You are not alone today. (to a male or mixed familiar addressee)

आप सूची में नहीं हैं।

āp sūcī meṃ nahīṃ haiṃ.

You are not on the list. (respectful)

वे कुर्सियाँ यहाँ नहीं थीं।

ve kursiyā̃ yahā̃ nahīṃ thīṃ.

Those chairs were not here.

Notice that नहीं itself never changes. The forms around it do: अकेले reflects the familiar addressee, हैं reflects respectful आप, and थीं reflects feminine plural कुर्सियाँ.

💡
Treat नहीं as a fixed negative particle, not as the negative verb. The copula remains responsible for agreement: मैं नहीं हूँ, आप नहीं हैं, दुकान नहीं थी, कमरे नहीं थे.

Negating identity, property, and location

In a simple copular clause, नहीं normally has scope over the predicate that precedes it.

यह मेरा बैग नहीं है।

yah merā baig nahīṃ hai.

This is not my bag.

आज पानी ठंडा नहीं है।

āj pānī ṭhaṇḍā nahīṃ hai.

The water is not cold today.

बच्चे अभी घर पर नहीं हैं।

bacce abhī ghar par nahīṃ haiṃ.

The children are not at home yet.

These clauses deny identification, a property, and a location respectively. English uses not after an inflected form of be; Hindi uses नहीं before the copula. Do not copy English order as है नहीं in a neutral beginner sentence.

The emphatic conversational sequence है ही नहीं puts the copula before the focused combination ही नहीं: मेरे पास समय है ही नहीं! “I simply have no time!” (informal, emphatic). That construction asserts complete absence; it does not make plain है नहीं the default. The systematic present construction is covered further in नहीं with the present copula.

Scope and contrast

Position and prosody determine exactly what is denied. Compare a neutral denial of the whole property with a contrast inside the predicate:

यह कमरा छोटा नहीं है; बस सामान ज़्यादा है।

yah kamrā choṭā nahīṃ hai; bas sāmān zyādā hai.

This room is not small; there is just too much stuff.

समस्या कमरा नहीं, उसका किराया है।

samasyā kamrā nahīṃ, uskā kirāyā hai.

The problem is not the room but its rent.

In the first, नहीं rejects the adjective छोटा. In the second, the explicit contrast कमरा नहीं, उसका किराया replaces one candidate identity with another. Spoken emphasis falls on the contrasted nouns. Hindi does not need a different negative word, but the information structure changes.

💡
Ask what the correction targets. कमरा बड़ा नहीं है denies “big”; बड़ा कमरा नहीं है denies that the referent is “a big room.” The same words can produce different scope when their grouping and emphasis differ.

Negative questions

Clause-initial क्या forms a yes–no question without English-style inversion. Adding नहीं often makes the question check an expectation, express surprise, or seek confirmation.

क्या यह रास्ता सुरक्षित नहीं है?

kyā yah rāstā surakṣit nahīṃ hai?

Isn't this route safe?

क्या आप कल उपलब्ध नहीं हैं?

kyā āp kal uplabdh nahīṃ haiṃ?

Aren't you available tomorrow? (respectful)

Depending on intonation and context, such questions can be genuine requests for information or expectation-laden checks. Hindi retains normal clause order; there is no equivalent of English auxiliary–subject inversion.

Existential and possessive negatives

The same sequence denies existence or possession. In existential clauses, the entity whose existence is denied still determines singular or plural agreement when overt.

इस गली में कोई बैंक नहीं है।

is galī meṃ koī baiṅk nahīṃ hai.

There is no bank on this street.

मेरे पास अभी नक़द पैसे नहीं हैं।

mere pās abhī naqd paise nahīṃ haiṃ.

I don't have any cash on me right now.

English turns the second relation into I do not have. Hindi does not introduce a form corresponding to English do. The locative possessor मेरे पास is followed by possessed plural पैसे, which controls हैं. This is one reason not to choose the copula from the English grammatical subject.

Negation in layered verbal predicates

When होना is an auxiliary, नहीं normally appears before the finite auxiliary or within the predicate immediately before the verbal material it negates.

रीना आज दफ़्तर नहीं जा रही है।

rīnā āj daftar nahīṃ jā rahī hai.

Reena is not going to the office today.

The layers are जा- “go” + progressive रही + present है. Negation denies the progressive event, while feminine agreement remains on रही and third-person singular agreement on है. In ordinary present habitual negatives, the auxiliary is often omitted in natural speech and writing—वह चाय नहीं पीता “he does not drink tea”—but copular identities and locations normally retain it: वह डॉक्टर नहीं है, वह यहाँ नहीं है. Auxiliary omission is therefore construction-specific, not a rule that “है disappears after नहीं.”

Infinitive होना is not a negative finite form

नहीं होना means “not to be/not being” and remains non-finite. A plain present or past claim needs a finite copula.

हमेशा गंभीर नहीं होना भी ठीक है।

hameśā gambhīr nahīṃ honā bhī ṭhīk hai.

It is also okay not to be serious all the time.

Here नहीं होना is an embedded infinitival phrase, and final है makes the evaluation finite. It cannot be reduced to मैं छात्र नहीं होना for “I am not a student.”

Common Mistakes

Copying English not + copula order incorrectly

❌ वह घर पर है नहीं।

Unnatural as a neutral negative; plain post-copular नहीं requires a special echo or contrastive context.

✅ वह घर पर नहीं है।

vah ghar par nahīṃ hai.

He/She is not at home.

Dropping agreement after नहीं

❌ ये कमरे खाली नहीं है।

Incorrect — plural कमरे requires हैं.

✅ ये कमरे खाली नहीं हैं।

ye kamre khālī nahīṃ haiṃ.

These rooms are not empty.

Using present है in a past negative

❌ कल दुकान खुली नहीं है।

Incorrect for a completed past-time claim; feminine दुकान needs थी.

✅ कल दुकान खुली नहीं थी।

kal dukān khulī nahīṃ thī.

The shop was not open yesterday.

Translating English do not have word for word

❌ मैं समय नहीं करता हूँ।

Incorrect — Hindi possession uses a locative construction, not करना for English do/have.

✅ मेरे पास समय नहीं है।

mere pās samay nahīṃ hai.

I don't have time.

Using a negative infinitive as a finite statement

❌ मैं डॉक्टर नहीं होना।

Incorrect — नहीं होना is non-finite.

✅ मैं डॉक्टर नहीं हूँ।

maĩ ḍokṭar nahīṃ hū̃.

I am not a doctor.

Key Takeaways

  • Put neutral नहीं before the finite copula and keep the correct agreement form.
  • Negation can deny identity, property, location, existence, possession, or a layered verbal event.
  • Emphatic है ही नहीं is possible in conversation, but नहीं है is the unmarked negative order.
  • Copula omission in some habitual negatives does not license omission in ordinary negative identity or location clauses.
