बनना bannā: to become and be made

बनना is the ordinary intransitive verb for a person or thing becoming something, taking shape, being prepared, or working out successfully. English often divides these meanings among “become,” “get made,” “be ready,” and “work out”; Hindi connects them through one underlying idea: the subject reaches or occupies a resulting state.

Stem and principal forms

The stem is बन-. When -ना is added, the two adjacent n-sounds are reflected in the spelling and pronunciation बनना bannā. Do not reduce it to बना banā, which is either a perfective form of बनना or the stem of the separate transitive verb बनाना.

यह कच्चा रास्ता बरसात में कीचड़ बन जाता है।

yah kaccā rāstā barsāt meṃ kīcaṛ ban jātā hai.

This unpaved road turns to mud during the rainy season.

नई वेबसाइट अभी बन रही है।

naī vebsāiṭ abhī ban rahī hai.

The new website is still being built.

The progressive example is naturally translated with an English passive, but Hindi बनना remains grammatically intransitive: वेबसाइट is the subject undergoing formation, and there is no expressed maker.

Becoming a role, kind, or state

With a role noun or result noun, बनना works much like English “become.” The result normally appears without a postposition. An adjective can also describe the resulting state, although होना and हो जाना compete with बनना for many adjective predicates.

मेरी बहन अगले महीने विभाग की अध्यक्ष बनेगी।

merī bahan agle mahīne vibhāg kī adhyakṣ banegī.

My sister will become the department chair next month.

कुछ ही महीनों में वे अच्छे दोस्त बन गए।

kuch hī mahīnoṃ meṃ ve acche dost ban gae.

Within just a few months, they became good friends.

The complement may itself contain a genitive phrase: विभाग की अध्यक्ष means “chair of the department.” It does not make बनना transitive. In the perfective, the changing subject controls agreement and does not take ने.

💡
Ask “what entered the new state?” That phrase is the grammatical subject of बनना. It controls बना, बनी, बने, or बनीं even when English uses a passive translation.

Formation, preparation, and availability

बनना also says that food, an object, a plan, or an arrangement comes into existence. Context supplies the maker. With food it can mean “be cooking” or “be ready”; with an artifact it can mean “be built/made”; with a plan it means “be formed.”

चाय बन गई है, सब लोग रसोई में आ जाइए।

cāy ban gaī hai, sab log rasoī meṃ ā jāie.

The tea is ready; everyone, please come into the kitchen.

इस जगह पर बच्चों के लिए नया पुस्तकालय बनेगा।

is jagah par baccoṃ ke lie nayā pustakālay banegā.

A new library for children will be built at this location.

This use is not a general-purpose passive. यहाँ पुल बन रहा है is idiomatic because formation is lexicalized with बनना. To identify an agent or describe a deliberately manufactured result, Hindi normally uses transitive बनाना or its productive passive बनाया जाना. Compare the fuller account of passives with जाना.

Habitual, progressive, and perfective

The habitual presents a repeated process or a regular recipe-like result; the progressive looks inside a current process; the perfective presents the result as reached.

हमारे घर में रविवार को अक्सर खिचड़ी बनती है।

Khichdi is often made at our house on Sundays.

आख़िरकार हमारी टीम विजेता बनी।

āxirkār hamārī ṭīm vijetā banī.

Our team finally became the winner.

Because बनना is intransitive, that perfective sentence has no ने. This remains true when English strongly favors “was made.”

The direct imperatives are बन, बनो, and respectful बनिए. They are natural when becoming names an intentional role or quality: मेरे साथी बनो “become my partner,” ज़िम्मेदार बनिए “be responsible.” They are less natural for an uncontrolled physical result.

आप चाहें तो हमारी समिति के सदस्य बनें।

āp cāheṃ to hamārī samiti ke sadasya baneṃ.

बनना versus बन जाना

Plain बनना names the transition or a characteristic process. बन जाना adds an endpoint: the new state is fully reached, often unexpectedly or after a development. जाना carries the finite inflection, while बन remains bare.

छोटी-सी बहस देखते-देखते बड़ा मुद्दा बन गई।

choṭī-sī bahas dekhte-dekhte baṛā muddā ban gaī.

Before anyone knew it, the small argument turned into a major issue.

Notice feminine गई, agreeing with बहस, even though the result noun मुद्दा is masculine. The changing subject, not the result complement, controls agreement. Plain बनी would describe the attained relation more neutrally; बन गई makes the change and endpoint prominent.

बनना, बनाना, and बनवाना

The core alternation is intransitive X बनता है “X becomes/gets made” versus transitive A, X बनाता है “A makes X.” The further causative बनवाना normally means that A has someone else make X. These verbs are related historically and synchronically, but learners must preserve their different argument structures.

पुराना गोदाम अब कला-केंद्र बन गया है।

purānā godām ab kalā-kendr ban gayā hai.

The old warehouse has now become an arts center.

Common idioms extend the result meaning. बात बनना means that a plan, negotiation, or solution works out; काम बनना means the desired outcome is achieved. These are neutral everyday expressions, not literal construction.

दूसरे प्रस्ताव पर सब मान गए, इसलिए बात बन गई।

dūsre prastāv par sab mān gae, islie bāt ban gaī.

Everyone accepted the second proposal, so things worked out.

Common Mistakes

❌ मीरा डॉक्टर बनाया।

Incorrect — बनाना is transitive; this sentence needs बनना for Meera becoming a doctor.

✅ मीरा डॉक्टर बनी।

mīrā ḍokṭar banī.

Meera became a doctor.

❌ नई योजना कल बना।

Incorrect — feminine योजना requires बनी.

✅ नई योजना कल बनी।

naī yojnā kal banī.

The new plan was formed yesterday.

❌ अर्जुन ने कप्तान बन गया।

Incorrect — intransitive बन जाना does not take ने.

✅ अर्जुन कप्तान बन गया।

arjun kaptān ban gayā.

Arjun became captain.

❌ बहस बड़ा मुद्दा बन गया।

Incorrect — गया must agree with feminine बहस, not masculine मुद्दा.

✅ बहस बड़ा मुद्दा बन गई।

bahas baṛā muddā ban gaī.

The argument became a major issue.

💡
English “be made” hides two Hindi structures. Use बनना when the subject’s formation or resulting state is the point; use बनाया जाना when a productive passive of “someone makes X” is required.

Key Takeaways

बनना is an intransitive result verb. Its subject becomes a role, takes shape, gets prepared, or reaches a successful outcome; that subject controls agreement and never receives perfective ने. बन जाना highlights arrival at the endpoint, while बनाना introduces a maker and बनवाना an arranger or intermediary.
