Raising-like लगना constructions

In मुझे रीना थकी हुई लगती है “Reena seems tired to me,” Reena is interpreted as the one who is tired, yet it appears as the unmarked noun phrase that controls लगती है. The experiencer takes को. Because the evaluated participant belongs semantically with the lower property but shows matrix-clause agreement behavior, this pattern is often described as raising-like. The label is useful, but Hindi analyses differ on its exact structure; the observable case and agreement diagnostics are more important than the name.

The neutral stimulus–experiencer pattern

The construction contains three semantic parts:

PartTypical formFunction
experiencerमुझे / रीना कोperson receiving the impression
stimulusयह कमरा / ये गलियाँentity being evaluated; agreement controller
property + लगनाछोटा लगता हैseeming judgment

मुझे यह कमरा बहुत छोटा लगता है।

mujhe yah kamrā bahut choṭā lagtā hai.

This room seems very small to me.

सोनल को ये शर्तें अनुचित लगती हैं।

sonal ko ye śarteṃ anucit lagtī haiṃ.

These conditions seem unfair to Sonal.

Masculine singular कमरा controls छोटा लगता है. Feminine plural शर्तें controls plural लगती हैं; indeclinable अनुचित itself shows no agreement. The dative experiencer never supplies person or number agreement.

💡
Find the thing that has the perceived property. That unmarked stimulus—not the person doing the perceiving—normally controls लगना and any agreeing adjective.

Why “raising-like” is a useful description

The stimulus is simultaneously connected to two parts of the predicate. Semantically, रीना satisfies the property थकी हुई; syntactically, it is unmarked and controls matrix लगती है.

मुझे रीना आज कुछ थकी हुई लगती है।

mujhe rīnā āj kuch thakī huī lagtī hai.

Reena seems somewhat tired to me today.

मुझे दोनों बच्चे तैयार लगते हैं।

mujhe donoṃ bacce taiyār lagte haiṃ.

Both children seem ready to me.

Agreement forms a constituency diagnostic: feminine Reena yields थकी हुई लगती, while masculine/mixed plural बच्चे yields लगते हैं. English makes I the subject in “I find Reena tired,” but Hindi experiencer मुझे cannot control the predicate.

The term raising-like is deliberately cautious. Some linguistic analyses treat the stimulus as raised from a smaller predicational unit; others give it a direct matrix position linked to the property. Both must account for the same facts: unmarked stimulus, dative experiencer, stimulus agreement, and a close semantic relation between stimulus and property.

Finite कि complement: proposition rather than nominal stimulus

When the content is a full proposition, Hindi commonly uses experiencer + लगता है कि + finite clause. With no nominal stimulus in the matrix clause, लगता है is default masculine singular.

मुझे लगता है कि रीना आज थकी हुई है।

mujhe lagtā hai ki rīnā āj thakī huī hai.

It seems to me that Reena is tired today.

हमें लगता है कि दोनों बच्चे तैयार हैं।

hameṃ lagtā hai ki donoṃ bacce taiyār haiṃ.

We think both children are ready.

This is the controlled structural contrast:

StructureMatrix agreementContent
मुझे रीना थकी लगती हैरीना → लगतीnominal stimulus + property
मुझे लगता है कि रीना थकी हैdefault लगता हैfinite proposition

The meaning overlaps, but the syntax differs. In the कि version, रीना ... है forms its own finite clause; Reena cannot control matrix लगता across the complementizer.

For the internal structure of the second pattern, see complement clauses with कि.

Perfective and temporal readings

Perfective लगा/लगी/लगे/लगीं presents the impression as arising or being formed on an occasion. The stimulus still controls when it is nominal.

पहली नज़र में मुझे योजना आसान लगी।

pahlī nazar meṃ mujhe yojnā āsān lagī.

At first glance, the plan seemed easy to me.

दूर से वे पहाड़ बहुत पास लगे।

dūr se ve pahāṛ bahut pās lage.

From a distance, those mountains seemed very close.

Feminine योजना yields लगी; masculine plural पहाड़ yields लगे. No ergative ने marks the experiencer because seeming लगना is not a transitive agentive perfective.

With a clausal content, perfective remains default:

मुझे लगा कि किसी ने दरवाज़ा खटखटाया।

mujhe lagā ki kisī ne darvāzā khaṭkhaṭāyā.

It seemed to me that someone knocked on the door.

Matrix लगा is default. Inside the embedded clause, किसी ने independently licenses a transitive perfective.

Omitted experiencer and general appearance

The experiencer can be omitted when the judgment is presented as generally accessible or the viewpoint is obvious.

यह कपड़ा छूने में मुलायम लगता है।

yah kapṛā chūne meṃ mulāyam lagtā hai.

This fabric feels soft to the touch.

नई इमारत बाहर से साधारण लगती है।

naī imārat bāhar se sādhāraṇ lagtī hai.

The new building looks ordinary from the outside.

The construction remains the same: कपड़ा/imārat is the stimulus and agreement controller. An unspoken generic experiencer does not create default agreement.

Negation and scope

Negation can reject the attributed property or the speaker’s confidence in the whole proposition. The two structures help make scope clear.

मुझे यह रास्ता सुरक्षित नहीं लगता।

mujhe yah rāstā surakṣit nahīṃ lagtā.

This route does not seem safe to me.

मुझे नहीं लगता कि यह रास्ता रात में सुरक्षित है।

mujhe nahīṃ lagtā ki yah rāstā rāt meṃ surakṣit hai.

I don’t think this route is safe at night.

The first negates the property inside a nominal-stimulus construction. The second negates the matrix assessment of a proposition. Their practical effect can converge, but the location of नहीं and the clause boundary distinguish the scopes.

Focus does not change agreement:

मुझे यही कमरा सबसे शांत लगता है।

mujhe yahī kamrā sabse śānt lagtā hai.

This is the very room that seems quietest to me.

Focus ही identifies the stimulus among alternatives; masculine कमरा still controls लगता.

Seeming लगना is not onset लगना

The same verb also follows an oblique infinitive in -ने to mean “begin”: वह हँसने लगी. That is an aspectual onset construction, not a raising-like judgment.

सवाल सुनते ही सीमा हँसने लगी।

savāl sunte hī sīmā hãsne lagī.

As soon as she heard the question, Seema began to laugh.

मुझे सीमा आज ख़ुश लग रही है।

mujhe sīmā āj xuś lag rahī hai.

Seema seems happy to me today.

In the onset sentence, Seema is the participant who begins laughing and controls लगी. In the seeming sentence, Seema is the stimulus evaluated as happy, and मुझे is the experiencer. Only the latter expresses an impression.

Other lexical frames must remain separate

ठंड लगना “feel cold,” समय लगना “take time,” चोट लगना “get hurt,” and फ़ोन लगना “the call connects” have their own argument structures. They are not automatically raising constructions simply because they contain लगना.

इस काम में तीन घंटे लगेंगे।

is kām meṃ tīn ghaṇṭe lageṃge.

This work will take three hours.

Plural तीन घंटे controls लगेंगे. There is no dative judge evaluating a stimulus property.

💡
Classify the lexical frame before assigning syntax: seeming, onset, sensation, duration, attachment, and connection uses of लगना do not share one controller pattern.

Naturally embedded contrast

अनु ने कहा कि उसे नया प्रस्ताव व्यावहारिक लगता है, लेकिन रवि को लगता है कि बजट कम है।

anu ne kahā ki use nayā prastāv vyāvahārik lagtā hai, lekin ravi ko lagtā hai ki bajaṭ kam hai.

Anu said that the new proposal seems practical to her, but Ravi thinks the budget is too small.

In the first embedded clause, unmarked masculine प्रस्ताव controls लगता है. In the coordinated clause, Ravi is dative and the content is a कि proposition, so matrix लगता है is default; embedded बजट कम है has its own copular predicate. Identical surface लगता forms have different structural explanations.

Common Mistakes

❌ मैं यह योजना आसान लगता हूँ।

Incorrect — the experiencer takes को, and feminine योजना controls लगती है.

✅ मुझे यह योजना आसान लगती है।

mujhe yah yojnā āsān lagtī hai.

This plan seems easy to me.

❌ हमें लगते हैं कि दुकानें बंद हैं।

Incorrect — a finite कि complement does not make लगना agree with plural दुकानें; use default लगता है.

✅ हमें लगता है कि दुकानें बंद हैं।

hameṃ lagtā hai ki dukāneṃ band haiṃ.

We think the shops are closed.

❌ आदित्य को दोनों कुर्सियाँ असुविधाजनक लगता है।

Incorrect — feminine plural कुर्सियाँ controls लगती हैं.

✅ आदित्य को दोनों कुर्सियाँ असुविधाजनक लगती हैं।

āditya ko donoṃ kursiyā̃ asuvidhājanak lagtī haiṃ.

Both chairs seem uncomfortable to Aditya.

❌ घंटी बजते ही छात्र बातें करना लगे।

Incorrect for onset — लगना selects the oblique infinitive in -ने.

✅ घंटी बजते ही छात्र बातें करने लगे।

ghaṇṭī bajte hī chātr bāteṃ karne lage.

As soon as the bell rang, the students began talking.

Key Takeaways

In raising-like seeming constructions, a dative experiencer receives an impression while an unmarked stimulus bears the perceived property and controls agreement. A finite कि proposition instead gives default matrix लगता है and contains its own agreement domain. Perfective लगी/लगे continues to track a nominal stimulus, negation can distinguish property from proposition scope, and focus does not change control. Onset -ने लगना and other lexical frames are structurally separate despite sharing the verb लगना.
