A Hindi perfective does not automatically require ने. The productive rule is narrower: ने marks the agent of a canonical active transitive perfective. Ordinary intransitives, marked-experiencer clauses, passives, predicates ending in certain modal or intransitive elements, and a small lexical set therefore form perfectives without it. The absence of ने matters because it also changes which phrase can control agreement.
This page explains the distribution and interpretation of no-ने perfectives. For the core ergative pattern itself, see ने as perfective ergative marker.
Aspect comes first, but transitivity decides ने
Perfective viewpoint packages an event as a bounded whole. It does not by itself identify an agent or an object. Compare one arrival with one act of opening:
| Predicate | Perfective clause | Why |
|---|---|---|
| पहुँचना “arrive” | अंजलि पहुँची | ordinary intransitive: no ने; subject agreement |
| खोलना “open something” | अंजलि ने खिड़की खोली | transitive: agent takes ने; object agreement |
| खुलना “open” | खिड़की खुली | change of state: no ने; subject agreement |
अंजलि समय पर पहुँची।
añjali samay par pahũcī.
Anjali arrived on time.
अंजलि ने खिड़की खोली।
añjali ne khiṛkī kholī.
Anjali opened the window.
हवा से खिड़की अपने-आप खुली।
havā se khiṛkī apne-āp khulī.
The window opened by itself because of the wind.
The last two sentences describe related real-world situations but use different Hindi predicates. खोलना introduces an actor acting on an object; खुलना presents the object's change of state. English can use open for both, so English speakers often miss the transitivity contrast.
Ordinary intransitive perfectives
Motion, posture, spontaneous change, and many bodily or life events normally keep an unmarked subject. The perfective agrees with that subject in gender and number.
| Controller | लौटना “return” | गिरना “fall” |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | लौटा | गिरा |
| feminine singular | लौटी | गिरी |
| masculine/mixed plural | लौटे | गिरे |
| feminine plural, no auxiliary | लौटीं | गिरीं |
दोनों बहनें छुट्टी के बाद लौटीं।
donoṃ bahneṃ chuṭṭī ke bād lauṭīṃ.
Both sisters returned after the holiday.
सीढ़ियों पर रखा डिब्बा नीचे गिर गया।
sīṛhiyoṃ par rakhā ḍibbā nīce gir gayā.
The box left on the stairs fell down.
क्या सारे मेहमान निकल गए?
kyā sāre mehmān nikal gae?
Have all the guests left?
Negation and questions do not change the alignment: मेहमान नहीं आए still has no ने. A present or past auxiliary also leaves the basic perfective frame intact: ट्रेन पहुँची है, ट्रेन पहुँची थी. The auxiliary locates the bounded arrival relative to now or to a past reference point; it does not independently decide case.
Marked experiencers are not ergative agents
Hindi often expresses sensation, reception, remembering, and realization with a person marked by को. That person is the experiencer, not a ने-marked agent. An unmarked theme can control agreement.
मुझे उसकी सलाह देर से याद आई।
mujhe uskī salāh der se yād āī.
I remembered her advice late.
बच्चों को बाहर से तेज़ आवाज़ सुनाई दी।
baccoṃ ko bāhar se tez āvāz sunāī dī.
The children heard a loud sound from outside.
हमें रास्ते में एक पुरानी दुकान मिली।
hameṃ rāste meṃ ek purānī dukān milī.
We came across an old shop on the way.
Feminine सलाह, आवाज़, दुकान controls आई, दी, मिली. English makes I, the children, and we its grammatical subjects, but copying that analysis into Hindi produces the wrong case and agreement.
Passive and modal predicates
A passive perfective presents the patient as the grammatical pivot. The actor, if expressed, appears in an agent phrase, not as a ने-marked subject.
सभी खिड़कियाँ शाम से पहले बंद कर दी गईं।
sabhī khiṛkiyā̃ śām se pahle band kar dī gaī̃.
All the windows were closed before evening.
Likewise, ability predicates with सकना commonly end in an intransitive modal and therefore have an unmarked controller even when the embedded action is transitive.
मैं आख़िरकार भारी दरवाज़ा खोल सका।
maĩ āxirkār bhārī darvāzā khol sakā.
I was finally able to open the heavy door. (male speaker)
नैना समय पर सारी फ़ाइलें भेज सकी।
nainā samay par sārī fāileṃ bhej sakī.
Naina managed to send all the files on time.
The perfective सका/सकी agrees with the unmarked subject. Do not force ने merely because खोलना and भेजना would take it in a simple active perfective. The shape of the whole predicate, especially its final inflecting element, matters.
Lexical exceptions and genuine variation
A few high-frequency predicates do not fit a mechanical transitive-equals-ने chart. Neutral Standard Hindi commonly uses simple perfective लाना without ने, with agreement controlled by the unmarked bringer.
रीना बैठक में नया नक़्शा लाई।
rīnā baiṭhak meṃ nayā naqśā lāī.
Reena brought a new map to the meeting.
भूलना, समझना, and some uses of बोलना show constructional, regional, or speaker variation. A safe description must not pretend that the entire system is optional: canonical लिखना, खाना, देखना, खोलना still take ने in active perfectives. Learn variable verbs in complete clauses, because their complement type and meaning can affect the pattern.
There is also limited ने variation with some agentive intransitive activities such as नाचना. These lexical edges are real and somewhat arbitrary. They must be learned; “intentional action” is not a reliable general rule, since intentional जाना and बैठना ordinarily remain no-ने intransitives.
A minimal viewpoint contrast
Hold the lexical content constant and change aspect:
कविता रोज़ अकेली दफ़्तर जाती थी।
kavitā roz akelī daftar jātī thī.
Kavita used to go to the office alone every day.
उस दिन कविता अकेली दफ़्तर गई।
us din kavitā akelī daftar gaī.
That day Kavita went to the office alone.
The habitual gives background routine; the perfective advances one bounded trip. Neither takes ने, because जाना remains intransitive. Aspect changes the event's viewpoint and its discourse role without creating transitivity.
A short narrative: viewpoint, then case
आरव रोज़ सात बजे निकलता था और बस से कॉलेज जाता था।
ārav roz sāt baje nikaltā thā aur bas se kolej jātā thā.
Aarav used to leave at seven and go to college by bus.
कल वह देर से उठा, जल्दी निकला और रास्ते में गिर पड़ा।
kal vah der se uṭhā, jaldī niklā aur rāste meṃ gir paṛā.
Yesterday he got up late, left quickly, and fell on the way.
फिर उसने अपने दोस्त को फ़ोन किया और दोस्त उसे लेने आया।
phir usne apne dost ko fon kiyā aur dost use lene āyā.
Then he phoned his friend, and the friend came to pick him up.
Habitual निकलता था, जाता था establishes the routine. No-ने perfectives उठा, निकला, गिर पड़ा, आया move the story through intransitive events. Only transitive फ़ोन किया introduces उसने. This is the organizing logic: aspect selects a bounded narrative view, while the predicate's argument structure determines case and agreement.
Common Mistakes
❌ अंजलि ने समय पर पहुँची।
Incorrect — ordinary intransitive पहुँचना does not take ergative ने.
✅ माधवी स्टेशन देर से पहुँची।
mādhavī sṭeśan der se pahũcī.
Madhavi reached the station late.
❌ रीना ने नया नक़्शा लाई।
Incorrect in the neutral standard pattern taught here — simple perfective लाना normally has no ने and agrees with the bringer.
✅ रीना नया नक़्शा लाई।
rīnā nayā naqśā lāī.
Reena brought a new map.
❌ कविता अंतिम टिप्पणी लिखी।
Incorrect — canonical transitive perfective लिखना requires ने; the unmarked feminine object then controls agreement.
✅ कविता ने अंतिम टिप्पणी लिखी।
kavitā ne antim ṭippaṇī likhī.
Kavita wrote the final comment.
❌ मुझे वह पुरानी बात याद आया।
Incorrect — marked experiencer मुझे cannot control agreement; feminine बात requires आई.
✅ मुझे वह पुरानी बात याद आई।
mujhe vah purānī bāt yād āī.
I remembered that old matter.
❌ मैंने दरवाज़ा खोल सका।
Incorrect — perfective सकना has an unmarked subject in this ability construction.
✅ मैं दरवाज़ा खोल सका।
maĩ darvāzā khol sakā.
I was able to open the door. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Perfective aspect supplies a bounded viewpoint; it does not mechanically supply ने. Ordinary intransitives agree with their unmarked subject, marked-experiencer clauses may agree with an unmarked theme, passives agree with the patient, and सकना ability predicates keep an unmarked controller. Canonical active transitive perfectives still require ने, while a small lexical and regional zone must be learned predicate by predicate.
