Compound verbs and event completion

Hindi compound verbs combine a bare lexical stem with an inflected vector or light verb: पढ़ लिया, लिख दिया, काट डाला, रख छोड़ा. The lexical stem identifies the event; the vector presents that event through a particular contour—often as completed, result-producing, forceful, or oriented toward a participant. A compound verb is therefore not simply a more emphatic past tense, and vectors are not freely interchangeable.

This page focuses on event completion and discourse choice. The wider inventory is introduced under compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector.

One predicate, two verbal layers

The first verb appears as a bare stem; the final vector carries aspectual morphology, agreement, tense, and mood.

Lexical eventCompound perfectiveTypical contribution
पढ़- “read”पढ़ लियाread through / got the reading done
लिख- “write”लिख दियाwrote it out / brought the writing about decisively or for another
फेंक- “throw”फेंक डालाthrew away decisively or forcefully
रख- “put”रख दियाput down, yielding a new location or state

मैंने यात्रा से पहले पूरा उपन्यास पढ़ लिया।

maĩne yātrā se pahle pūrā upanyās paṛh liyā.

I finished reading the whole novel before the trip.

सोनल ने जवाब लिखकर तुरंत भेज दिया।

sonal ne javāb likhkar turant bhej diyā.

Sonal wrote the reply and sent it straight away.

उसने ग़ुस्से में पुराना पोस्टर फाड़ डाला।

usne ġusse meṃ purānā posṭar phāṛ ḍālā.

In anger, he tore up the old poster.

In each compound, the vector is the grammatical head. Do not conjugate both pieces: पढ़ लिया, not पढ़ा लिया for “finished reading.” The latter can instead be understood causatively in another context—“had [someone] read”—and is not a harmless extra ending.

💡
Build a compound verb from bare lexical stem + one inflected vector: लिख दिया, देख लिया, काट डाला. The vector carries the visible morphology for the predicate.

Completion is stronger than perfective viewpoint alone

A simple perfective already views an event as bounded. A completive vector can additionally foreground reaching a relevant endpoint, securing a result, or disposing of the task.

मैंने रिपोर्ट पढ़ी।

maĩne riporṭ paṛhī.

I read the report.

मैंने रिपोर्ट पढ़ ली।

maĩne riporṭ paṛh lī.

I finished reading the report / got the report read.

This minimal pair holds the lexical content constant. पढ़ी reports a bounded reading episode. पढ़ ली makes the attained endpoint pragmatically salient and often suggests that the task is now off the reader's agenda. Context can still limit what was accomplished; no vector guarantees every imaginable consequence.

The timeline contrast is clearer beside the progressive:

FormViewNatural question answered
रिपोर्ट पढ़ रही थी[reading in progress …]What was she doing?
रिपोर्ट पढ़ी[bounded reading event]What did she read/do?
रिपोर्ट पढ़ ली[endpoint reached] → resultDid she finish/get it done?

जब मैंने फ़ोन किया, नीलम रिपोर्ट पढ़ रही थी।

jab maĩne fon kiyā, nīlam riporṭ paṛh rahī thī.

When I called, Neelam was reading the report.

रात तक नीलम रिपोर्ट पढ़ चुकी थी।

rāt tak nīlam riporṭ paṛh cukī thī.

By night, Neelam had finished reading the report.

चुकना explicitly marks prior completion and is especially natural with तक deadlines. It is more specialized than productive vectors such as लेना/देना and cannot decorate every predicate naturally.

लेना, देना, डालना, and रखना are not synonyms

Completion is only part of the meaning. Vector choice profiles the event and its participants.

  • लेना often presents completion as secured by or relevant to the agent: नोट कर लिया, सीख लिया.
  • देना often presents the result as released, transferred, other-directed, or decisively brought about: भेज दिया, खोल दिया.
  • डालना can add forceful, thorough, abrupt, or sometimes disapproving completion: तोड़ डाला, फेंक डाला.
  • रखना often leaves a maintained result or completes something in advance: पैसे बचाकर रखे, नाम लिख रखा है.

मैंने रास्ता फ़ोन में सेव कर लिया है।

maĩne rāstā fon meṃ sev kar liyā hai.

I've saved the route on my phone for my use.

कर्मचारी ने हमारे लिए पिछला दरवाज़ा खोल दिया।

karmacārī ne hamāre lie pichlā darvāzā khol diyā.

The employee opened the back door for us.

दादी ने मेहमानों के लिए मिठाई बचाकर रखी थी।

dādī ne mehmānoṃ ke lie miṭhāī bacākar rakhī thī.

Grandmother had saved some sweets for the guests.

These meanings are tendencies, not mechanical translations of “for oneself,” “for someone else,” or “completely.” Lexical compatibility matters. Native usage conventionalizes some combinations and rejects others, so learn compounds from real clauses rather than producing them by a universal vector chart.

💡
A vector contributes a viewpoint and a discourse stance, not merely intensity. Before choosing one, ask what result becomes salient and whose interests or expectations the event affects.

Tense comes outside the completion layer

The vector can appear in different tense-aspect-mood forms. Completion is therefore not identical to past time.

मैं शाम तक ये नोट लिख लूँगी।

maĩ śām tak ye noṭ likh lū̃gī.

I'll get these notes written by evening. (female speaker)

वह मुश्किल काम भी कर लेता है।

vah muśkil kām bhī kar letā hai.

He manages to get even difficult tasks done.

Future लूँगी, imperative लीजिए, and habitual लेता है all retain the vector's participant-oriented or endpoint meaning. English often uses different lexical devices—finish, manage to, go ahead and, or a particle—where Hindi keeps a single layered predicate.

Ergativity and agreement still apply

In an active transitive perfective compound, the agent normally takes ने. An unmarked object controls vector agreement; a को-marked object cannot.

राहुल ने सारी सब्ज़ियाँ काट लीं।

rāhul ne sārī sabziyā̃ kāṭ līṃ.

Rahul finished cutting all the vegetables.

अदिति ने दोनों चिट्ठियाँ लिख दी हैं।

aditi ne donoṃ ciṭṭhiyā̃ likh dī haiṃ.

Aditi has gone ahead and written both letters.

नेहा ने आरती को घर भेज दिया।

nehā ne ārtī ko ghar bhej diyā.

Neha sent Aarti home.

Feminine plural सब्ज़ियाँ produces standalone लीं. Before present हैं, feminine plural चिट्ठियाँ produces दी हैं, without the standalone nasal ending. In the last clause, आरती को is unavailable for agreement, so दिया is default masculine singular. The auxiliary cannot be interpreted separately from the perfective layer it closes.

Negation and scope

Hindi often prefers a simple verb under plain event negation because an event whose occurrence is denied supplies no attained endpoint to highlight.

मैंने अभी तक वह लेख नहीं पढ़ा है।

maĩne abhī tak vah lekh nahīṃ paṛhā hai.

I haven't read that article yet.

A compound remains natural when the denied result or vector contrast is itself important.

उसने चिट्ठी फाड़ नहीं दी; संभालकर रख ली।

usne ciṭṭhī phāṛ nahīṃ dī; sambhālkar rakh lī.

She didn't tear the letter up; she kept it safely.

The second sentence contrasts two possible resulting states. This is more informative than a rule claiming that compound verbs “cannot be negated.” They can; their frequency and interpretation depend on scope and discourse.

A short narrative: opening and closing the event

सुबह तक आरुषि प्रस्ताव लिख रही थी और कई आँकड़े जाँच रही थी।

subah tak ārushi prastāv likh rahī thī aur kaī ā̃kaṛe jā̃c rahī thī.

Until morning, Aarushi was writing the proposal and checking several figures.

दस बजे उसने आख़िरी तालिका जाँच ली और प्रस्ताव पूरा कर लिया।

das baje usne āxirī tālikā jā̃c lī aur prastāv pūrā kar liyā.

At ten she checked the final table and completed the proposal.

फिर उसने फ़ाइल निदेशक को भेज दी और लैपटॉप बंद कर दिया।

phir usne fāil nideśak ko bhej dī aur laipaṭop band kar diyā.

Then she sent the file to the director and shut the laptop.

Progressives keep the work open as background. जाँच ली/पूरा कर लिया announce attained endpoints; भेज दी/बंद कर दिया advance the narrative through consequential state changes. The speaker changes aspect because the discourse moves from process to completed results.

Common Mistakes

❌ उसने संदेश लिखा दिया।

Incorrect — the lexical verb must be a bare stem before the vector.

✅ उसने संदेश लिख दिया।

usne sandeś likh diyā.

He or she went ahead and wrote the message.

❌ राकेश ने सारी प्लेटें धो लिया।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural प्लेटें controls the vector.

✅ राकेश ने सारी प्लेटें धो लीं।

rākeś ne sārī pleṭeṃ dho līṃ.

Rakesh finished washing all the plates.

❌ मैंने कल पूरा लेख पढ़ रहा था।

Incorrect for a completed reading — the progressive presents the event from inside and leaves its endpoint open.

✅ मैंने कल पूरा लेख पढ़ लिया।

maĩne kal pūrā lekh paṛh liyā.

I finished reading the whole article yesterday.

❌ दीपा ने अपनी बहन को दिल्ली भेज दी।

Incorrect — को blocks agreement, so the perfective compound defaults to masculine singular दिया.

✅ दीपा ने अपनी बहन को दिल्ली भेज दिया।

dīpā ne apnī bahan ko dillī bhej diyā.

Deepa sent her sister to Delhi.

❌ आप यह फ़ॉर्म भर लिया।

Incorrect as a respectful command — perfective लिया reports completion; imperative लीजिए requests it.

✅ आप यह फ़ॉर्म भर लीजिए।

āp yah form bhar lījie.

Please fill out this form. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

Compound verbs package a lexical event through an inflected vector. A vector can foreground completion, a maintained result, force, transfer, or participant orientation, but it does not simply mean “past” or “completely.” The final vector carries tense, mood, and agreement; perfective compounds retain ordinary ने, object-agreement, and default-agreement rules. Because vector combinations are lexical as well as aspectual, natural usage must be learned phrase by phrase.
