Hindi vector choice is systematic but not mechanically predictable. The lexical stem identifies the event; the vector construes it as bounded, participant-oriented, sudden, forceful, maintained, separated, or evaluatively striking. A plausible combination may still be unattested or unexpectedly specialized.
This page turns the inventory introduced under compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector into a decision method. The method narrows the options; actual collocations must still be learned from usage.
First decision: simple verb or compound verb?
A simple verb is often best for a neutral fact, routine, open-ended activity, or plain negative. A compound becomes attractive when the speaker wants the event boundary and its consequences to enter the foreground.
अमन ने स्टूडियो का पिछला दरवाज़ा खोला।
aman ne sṭūḍiyo kā pichlā darvāzā kholā.
Aman opened the studio's back door.
अमन ने स्टूडियो का पिछला दरवाज़ा खोल दिया।
aman ne sṭūḍiyo kā pichlā darvāzā khol diyā.
Aman opened up the studio's back door.
The simple perfective neutrally records the opening. खोल दिया makes the newly available access salient. Both are completed past events; vector देना contributes a result profile, not past tense.
By contrast, दरवाज़ा खोल रखा है uses रखना to present the open state as deliberately maintained. Substituting a vector changes how the event matters, not merely its intensity.
Second decision: what kind of boundary or result matters?
The most useful vector meanings are semantic centers, not definitions without exceptions.
| Vector | Frequent profile | Natural environments | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| लेना | result secured or brought into the agent's sphere | controlled tasks, acquisition, preparation | नोट कर लेना |
| देना | result released, made available, or decisively caused | communication, transfer, access, consequential change | बता देना |
| जाना | transition, completion, separation, movement away | changes of state and many intransitive events | टूट जाना |
| आना | emergence, arrival into view, speakerward result | appearance, return after an action, motion toward a center | उभर आना |
| पड़ना | sudden or involuntary onset | crying, laughing, falling, unexpected entry into an event | रो पड़ना |
| उठना | abrupt initiation, often expressive | speech, cries, emotion, collective reaction | चीख उठना |
| बैठना | settled action affecting the actor, often regrettable in context | mistakes and consequential decisions | गलती कर बैठना |
| डालना | forceful, thorough, abrupt, or evaluated completion | destruction, consumption, striking production | फाड़ डालना |
| रखना | maintained result or advance preparation | states and resources kept ready | लिख रखना |
These profiles overlap. The same lexical stem may combine with several vectors, but each combination needs a plausible event construal and conventional support.
मैंने सम्मेलन की तारीख़ नोट कर ली।
maĩne sammelan kī tārīx noṭ kar lī.
I noted down the conference date for my own use.
मैंने सम्मेलन की तारीख़ सबको बता दी।
maĩne sammelan kī tārīx sabko batā dī.
I told everyone the conference date.
Feminine तारीख़ controls ली/दी in both perfectives. लेना keeps the result in the agent's informational sphere; देना releases it outward. This contrast is predictive, but it is not a rigid “for self versus for others” rule.
Event structure constrains compatibility
Vectors readily combine with events that have an endpoint: a document gets written, a door reaches an open state, or a quantity gets consumed. An open-ended activity can become compatible when context supplies a boundary.
कविता दो घंटे चली।
kavitā do ghaṇṭe calī.
Kavita walked for two hours.
कविता आज पाँच किलोमीटर चल ली।
kavitā āj pā̃c kilomīṭar cal lī.
Kavita managed to get five kilometres of walking done today.
The duration in the first sentence simply measures an activity. The quantified route in the second creates a practical target that लेना can present as achieved. This does not mean every duration rejects vectors or every quantity requires one; it shows how context can reshape the event.
Stable states generally resist forceful or completive vectors unless the combination creates a change-of-state reading. जान लिया is conventional, but it normally means “found out, realized, or came to know,” not “finished knowing.”
मैंने उसकी चाल जान ली।
maĩne uskī cāl jān lī.
I figured out his or her scheme.
The vector coerces जानना toward acquisition of knowledge. It does not make an already stable state more complete. This kind of lexical shift is why a dictionary gloss cannot predict every compound.
Participant orientation is pragmatic, not a new argument
Vectors frequently suggest whose sphere the result enters, but they do not mechanically add a beneficiary, recipient, or affected-person argument.
मेरे लिए भी कल की ट्रेन में जगह बुक कर लो।
mere lie bhī kal kī ṭren meṃ jagah buk kar lo.
Book me a place on tomorrow's train too. (informal)
The beneficiary is the speaker, yet लेना is natural because the addressee is to secure and take responsibility for the booking. “लेना = only for oneself” would wrongly reject this sentence.
No human recipient is required for देना: हवा आने के लिए खिड़की खोल दी profiles a resulting opening for airflow, not transfer to a person.
Speaker evaluation can also arise pragmatically from affectedness. गलती कर बैठना often implies regret because the actor becomes caught in the consequence, not because बैठना literally encodes the word “regret.”
रीना जल्दबाज़ी में ग़लत वादा कर बैठी।
rīnā jaldabāzī meṃ ġalat vādā kar baiṭhī.
In her haste, Reena ended up making the wrong promise.
The intransitive vector बैठना makes the whole compound align with feminine subject रीना; there is no ने. Context produces the regrettable interpretation.
The final vector affects case and agreement
The lexical stem contributes its participants, but the final vector is the inflectional head and can influence the alignment of the whole predicate.
नीलम ने सारी टिप्पणियाँ लिख दीं।
nīlam ne sārī ṭippaṇiyā̃ likh dīṃ.
Neelam wrote out all the comments and made them available.
Transitive vector देना yields a canonical perfective ने clause; unmarked feminine plural टिप्पणियाँ controls दीं.
बच्चा सारी मिठाई खा गया।
baccā sārī miṭhāī khā gayā.
The child ate up all the sweets.
Intransitive vector जाना yields subject-oriented गया and no ergative ने, even though lexical खा- has an object. This is not optional decoration: choosing a vector can change the morphosyntactic frame.
Lexical convention creates both families and gaps
Some combinations form broad families—पढ़ लेना, सीख लेना, नोट कर लेना—while others are isolated or idiomatic. Native speakers do not freely place every vector after every stem and then calculate a meaning.
For example, रो पड़ना expresses sudden crying, whereas रो लेना means having a cry, often deliberately. कह देना releases information, कह डालना can sound rash, and कह बैठना suggests consequences that catch the speaker. लिख रखना, लिख लेना, and लिख देना respectively maintain, secure, and release a written result.
The alternatives are contrasts only where actual usage licenses them. An invented जान डालना intended as “know completely” fails because Hindi uses जान डालना in an entirely different lexical expression (“put life into”) and other constructions for acquiring knowledge.
Noun–verb predicates add another layer
A noun–verb predicate keeps its noun before its light verb, and the vector follows the bare light-verb stem:
| Internal predicate | With vector | Resulting profile |
|---|---|---|
| फ़ैसला करना | फ़ैसला कर लेना | settle a decision for oneself |
| घोषणा करना | घोषणा कर देना | make the announcement public |
| तैयारी करना | तैयारी कर रखना | keep preparations in place |
समिति ने आख़िर तारीख़ बदलने का फ़ैसला कर लिया।
samiti ne āxir tārīx badalne kā faislā kar liyā.
The committee finally decided to change the date.
English order does not license कर फ़ैसला लिया. The layers are noun फ़ैसला + light stem कर- + inflected vector लिया.
Negation and register affect selection
Plain negation often suppresses a completive vector: मैंने लेख नहीं पढ़ा is the normal neutral denial. A vector survives where its result is contrasted or feared: लेख पढ़ तो नहीं लिया?, फ़ाइल मिटा मत देना. The full scope system is developed under compound verbs under negation.
Marked vectors also carry stylistic weight. डालना and बैठना are common in conversation and narrative but may sound evaluative in neutral (formal) prose. Register never licenses an incompatible collocation.
A dialogue: choosing vectors by task state
बजट की नई तालिका तैयार है?
bajaṭ kī naī tālikā taiyār hai?
Is the new budget table ready?
आँकड़े जाँच लिए हैं और तालिका बना रखी है, लेकिन अभी भेजी नहीं है।
ā̃kaṛe jā̃c lie haiṃ aur tālikā banā rakhī hai, lekin abhī bhejī nahīṃ hai.
I've checked the figures and have the table prepared, but I haven't sent it yet.
ठीक है, निदेशक का नाम जोड़कर भेज देना; पुरानी प्रति मत भेज देना।
ṭhīk hai, nideśak kā nām joṛkar bhej denā; purānī prati mat bhej denā.
All right, add the director's name and send it; don't send the old copy. (informal)
जाँच लिए presents a completed task secured by the worker. बना रखी presents the table as currently ready. Simple negative भेजी नहीं है says transmission has not occurred. The instruction chooses भेज देना because the result must now leave the worker's sphere, while the prohibition repeats that same outward endpoint as a risk.
A practical decision path
- Prefer a simple verb for a neutral fact, routine, open activity, or plain denial.
- Identify the boundary: completion, transition, onset, maintenance, or separation.
- Identify the stance: secured, released, forceful, involuntary, or surprising.
- Check the vector's transitivity, agreement, and compatibility with the intended lexical sense.
- Confirm the collocation from usage rather than forcing a chart's prediction.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding a completion vector to a stable state
❌ उसने मौसम जान डाला।
Incorrect for 'found out the weather'—डालना does not productively mean 'know completely.'
✅ उसे मौसम का हाल पता चल गया।
use mausam kā hāl patā cal gayā.
He or she found out what the weather was like.
2. Treating vectors as synonyms
❌ ख़बर मिलते ही नीलम रो ली।
Wrong for the intended involuntary onset — रो ली means that Neelam had a cry, not that crying suddenly began.
✅ ख़बर मिलते ही नीलम रो पड़ी।
xabar milte hī nīlam ro paṛī.
Neelam burst into tears as soon as she heard the news.
3. Keeping ने with an intransitive vector
❌ सीमा ने जल्दबाज़ी में ग़लत फ़ैसला कर बैठी।
Incorrect — final intransitive बैठना gives subject agreement and no ने.
✅ सीमा जल्दबाज़ी में ग़लत फ़ैसला कर बैठी।
sīmā jaldabāzī meṃ ġalat faislā kar baiṭhī.
In her haste, Seema ended up making the wrong decision.
4. Ignoring agreement with a transitive vector
❌ तारा ने सभी टिप्पणियाँ दर्ज कर दिया।
Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural टिप्पणियाँ controls transitive vector देना.
✅ तारा ने सभी टिप्पणियाँ दर्ज कर दीं।
tārā ne sabhī ṭippaṇiyā̃ darj kar dīṃ.
Tara entered all the comments.
5. Copying English noun–verb order
❌ उन्होंने कर फ़ैसला लिया।
Incorrect — the noun belongs before light stem कर-, followed by the vector.
✅ उन्होंने अंतिम फ़ैसला कर लिया।
unhoṃne antim faislā kar liyā.
They made the final decision.
Key Takeaways
- Vector selection begins with event structure and discourse purpose, but ends with lexical compatibility.
- लेना, देना, जाना, पड़ना, डालना, रखना and other vectors profile different boundaries, participant relations, and evaluations; they are not interchangeable completion markers.
- A vector can select one sense of a verb and coerce a change-of-state reading while rejecting another sense.
- The final vector carries inflection and can determine whether the perfective compound uses ने or subject agreement.
- Natural mastery requires learning collocations in full contexts, including the simple alternative and the situations in which the vector sounds marked.
