Compound verbs under negation

Hindi compound verbs are less frequent under plain negation because a vector often highlights an attained endpoint, while ordinary negation says that the event did not happen. This is a strong discourse preference, not a ban. A vector remains natural when the speaker denies a particular result, warns against reaching it, fears it, or contrasts it with another outcome. For the affirmative baseline, see compound verbs and event completion.

The key question is therefore not “Can a compound verb be negative?” It is “Does the vector's contribution remain relevant inside the negative scope?”

Neutral nonoccurrence usually favors the simple verb

Compare an affirmative completion with a neutral negative using the same reader and report:

ईशा ने वह रिपोर्ट पढ़ ली।

īśā ne vah riporṭ paṛh lī.

Isha finished reading that report.

ईशा ने वह रिपोर्ट नहीं पढ़ी।

īśā ne vah riporṭ nahīṃ paṛhī.

Isha did not read that report.

Affirmative पढ़ ली makes the completed reading relevant. In the negative, no reading event is asserted and there is no secured endpoint to profile, so simple नहीं पढ़ी is the unmarked choice. English uses did not finish reading and did not read to distinguish related meanings; Hindi often reserves the compound for contexts where that completion contrast is genuinely active.

अमन ने आज नाश्ता नहीं किया।

aman ne āj nāśtā nahīṃ kiyā.

Aman did not have breakfast today.

Neutral नहीं किया is more natural than an unmotivated कर नहीं लिया. The latter would invite a special reading such as failure to take care of breakfast before some deadline.

💡
For a plain answer to “Did X happen?”, start with नहीं + simple verb. Retain a vector only when you can state what endpoint, result, participant orientation, or speaker attitude the negative clause is contrasting.

Retaining the vector to deny a specific result

When the discourse has already raised a consequential outcome, denying that outcome keeps the vector informative.

राघव ने फ़ाइल मिटा नहीं दी; सिर्फ़ उसका नाम बदला है।

rāghav ne fāil miṭā nahīṃ dī; sirf uskā nām badlā hai.

Raghav didn't delete the file; he only changed its name.

The feared result is deletion. मिटा नहीं दी rejects that new state and contrasts it with renaming. Simple फ़ाइल नहीं मिटाई would also be grammatical, but it would not echo the salient “deleted or not?” alternative as strongly.

Negation can also target total completion rather than every part of the event:

सारा ने सारी मिठाई खा नहीं ली; आधी अभी भी बची है।

sārā ne sārī miṭhāī khā nahīṃ lī; ādhī abhī bhī bacī hai.

Sara didn't eat all the sweets; half is still left.

Some eating occurred, but the total endpoint encoded by सारी मिठाई खा ली was not reached. If the intended meaning were that Sara ate none, neutral सारा ने मिठाई नहीं खाई would be clearer.

हमने योजना छोड़ नहीं दी है; हम उसे नए बजट के अनुसार बदल रहे हैं।

hamne yojnā choṛ nahīṃ dī hai; ham use nae bajaṭ ke anusār badal rahe haiṃ.

We have not abandoned the plan; we are adapting it to the new budget.

The compound survives because the speaker denies a settled abandonment, not merely an unspecified act involving the plan.

Where the negative particle appears

Hindi commonly places नहीं, मत, or focused तो नहीं between the lexical stem and the vector. That separation does not turn the two verbs into separate clauses.

PatternExample shapeTypical use
नहीं + simple verbनहीं पढ़ाneutral nonoccurrence
stem + नहीं + vectorमिटा नहीं दियाdeny a salient result
stem + तो नहीं + vectorभेज तो नहीं दिया?apprehensive check
stem + मत + vectorफेंक मत देनाnegative command or warning
कहीं + stem + न + vectorकहीं बता न देfear or prevention

Word order can vary with focus and prosody, especially in speech, but a final नहीं after the fully inflected vector is not the neutral pattern. Learners should master the common placements above before interpreting marked echo corrections.

Apprehensive questions

The pattern तो नहीं asks whether an unwelcome result may already have occurred. Vectors are especially natural because the speaker is concerned about the endpoint.

तुमने अनुबंध ग्राहक को भेज तो नहीं दिया?

tumne anubandh grāhak ko bhej to nahīṃ diyā?

You haven't gone and sent the contract to the client, have you? (informal, concerned)

उसने सारे पैसे खर्च तो नहीं कर लिए?

usne sāre paise xarc to nahīṃ kar lie?

He or she hasn't spent all the money, has he or she? (concerned)

In the first, दिया profiles the contract as released outward. In the second, लिए profiles an attained total result affecting the agent's resources. तो नहीं does not simply turn a statement into a yes–no question; it conveys an expectation or hope that the answer is negative.

💡
Apprehensive तो नहीं is common in conversation. Translate its stance, not each particle: भेज तो नहीं दिया? is closer to “You haven't sent it already, have you?” than to a literal sequence with then.

Negative commands and warnings

Imperative मत frequently splits the compound because the warning is precisely about avoiding its result.

मसौदा बिना पढ़े भेज मत देना।

masaudā binā paṛhe bhej mat denā.

Don't send the draft without reading it. (informal warning)

इन रसीदों को बेकार समझकर फेंक मत डालना।

in rasīdoṃ ko bekār samajhkar pheṅk mat ḍālnā.

Don't go and throw these receipts away thinking they are useless. (informal warning)

भेज मत देना warns against releasing the draft; फेंक मत डालना adds concern about sweeping, irreversible disposal. A simple prohibition—मत भेजना, मत फेंकना—is often enough when no special result profile matters.

Respect comes from the address form, not from vector choice:

कृपया मूल प्रति नष्ट मत कर दीजिए।

kripyā mūl prati naṣṭ mat kar dījie.

Please do not destroy the original copy. (respectful)

The respectful vector imperative दीजिए maintains the outward/resultative profile. मत still carries the prohibition.

Fear clauses with कहीं...न

In a fear or prevention clause, न does not neutrally assert nonoccurrence. It presents an event as a possibility the speaker wants to avoid, so a vector describing the feared endpoint is strongly favored.

मुझे डर था कि वह कहीं राज़ खोल न दे।

mujhe ḍar thā ki vah kahīṃ rāz khol na de.

I was afraid that he might reveal the secret.

ध्यान रखना कि बच्चा कहीं दवा पी न ले।

dhyān rakhnā ki baccā kahīṃ davā pī na le.

Make sure the child doesn't accidentally drink the medicine. (informal instruction)

The first fears information being released through देना. The second fears the child reaching the completed-consumption result पी ले. Although न appears, neither clause reports that the feared event did not happen; both locate it in an undesired possible world.

Agreement and ergativity do not disappear

Negative polarity does not cancel perfective case or agreement rules.

पूजा ने पुरानी चिट्ठियाँ फाड़ नहीं दीं।

pūjā ne purānī ciṭṭhiyā̃ phāṛ nahīṃ dīṃ.

Pooja did not tear up the old letters.

The transitive perfective agent still bears ने, and unmarked feminine plural चिट्ठियाँ controls standalone दीं. With a marked object, default masculine singular appears:

प्रबंधक ने किसी कर्मचारी को निकाल नहीं दिया।

prabandhak ne kisī karmacārī ko nikāl nahīṃ diyā.

The manager did not dismiss any employee.

किसी कर्मचारी को cannot control agreement, so दिया remains masculine singular. Negation affects assertion and scope, not the underlying controller hierarchy.

A dialogue: neutral denial and feared completion

तुमने संशोधित प्रस्ताव निदेशक को भेज तो नहीं दिया?

tumne saṃśodhit prastāv nideśak ko bhej to nahīṃ diyā?

You haven't sent the revised proposal to the director already, have you? (informal, worried)

नहीं, मैंने अभी कुछ नहीं भेजा; मसौदा अलग रख दिया है।

nahīṃ, maĩne abhī kuch nahīṃ bhejā; masaudā alag rakh diyā hai.

No, I haven't sent anything yet; I've put the draft aside.

ठीक है, जाँच पूरी होने से पहले उसे भेज मत देना।

ṭhīk hai, jā̃c pūrī hone se pahle use bhej mat denā.

All right, don't send it before the review is complete. (informal)

The first and third turns retain देना because release of the proposal is the feared endpoint. The answer uses simple कुछ नहीं भेजा for neutral nonoccurrence, then रख दिया for the actual resulting location of the draft.

💡
Negative discourse can alternate simple and compound predicates naturally. Use the simple verb to deny that an event occurred; use a vector where a particular result, warning, or contrast remains live.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting नहीं after the completed predicate

❌ उसने सारे पैसे खर्च कर लिए नहीं।

Incorrect as neutral Standard Hindi word order — नहीं normally precedes the simple predicate or intervenes before the vector.

✅ उसने सारे पैसे खर्च नहीं किए।

usne sāre paise xarc nahīṃ kie.

He or she did not spend all the money.

2. Using a marked compound for neutral nonoccurrence

❌ मैंने आज नाश्ता कर नहीं लिया।

Poor for the neutral meaning 'I did not have breakfast'—the retained vector invites a special completion contrast.

✅ मैंने आज नाश्ता नहीं किया।

maĩne āj nāśtā nahīṃ kiyā.

I did not have breakfast today.

3. Dropping the finite vector after a bare stem

❌ राघव ने फ़ाइल मिटा नहीं।

Incorrect — bare मिटा- cannot close the finite clause.

✅ राघव ने फ़ाइल मिटा नहीं दी।

rāghav ne fāil miṭā nahīṃ dī.

Raghav did not delete the file.

4. Losing agreement under negation

❌ सीमा ने पुरानी फ़ाइलें मिटा नहीं दिया।

Incorrect — negative polarity does not block feminine plural object agreement.

✅ सीमा ने पुरानी फ़ाइलें मिटा नहीं दीं।

sīmā ne purānī fāileṃ miṭā nahīṃ dīṃ.

Seema did not delete the old files.

5. Using मत in a past declarative

❌ उसने कल संदेश मत भेज दिया।

Incorrect — मत forms a prohibition, not a factual past denial.

✅ उसने कल संदेश नहीं भेजा।

usne kal sandeś nahīṃ bhejā.

He or she did not send the message yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Plain negative nonoccurrence generally favors नहीं + simple verb because no endpoint is attained.
  • A compound remains natural when a particular result is denied, contrasted, feared, or prohibited.
  • stem + नहीं/मत/तो नहीं + vector is a common integrated pattern; particle placement helps reveal scope and stance.
  • Fear clauses with कहीं...न present an undesired possibility rather than asserting that the event did not occur.
  • Negation leaves transitivity, ने, object marking, and agreement unchanged.
