As a vector, डालना follows a bare lexical stem and presents the event as carried through with force, thoroughness, abruptness, or a strong evaluative charge: फाड़ डाला, तोड़ डाला, लिख डाला. It often makes the endpoint feel more consequential than a neutral simple perfective does. The force may be physical, but it can also be determination, excess, surprise, or speaker disapproval.
Vector डालना does not add a literal second action of putting. In पत्र फाड़ डाला, nobody tears a letter and then puts it somewhere. This is one predicate built on the general lexical-stem plus vector pattern.
Bare stem plus inflected डालना
The lexical verb names the event and remains a bare stem. डालना carries tense, mood, aspect, and agreement.
| Lexical event | Compound | Frequent effect |
|---|---|---|
| फाड़- “tear” | फाड़ डाला | tear up decisively |
| तोड़- “break” | तोड़ डाला | break completely or violently |
| पीस- “grind” | पीस डाला | grind thoroughly |
| लिख- “write” | लिख डाला | produce a substantial text in a burst |
विवेक ने ग़ुस्से में पुराना बिल फाड़ डाला।
vivek ne ġusse meṃ purānā bil phāṛ ḍālā.
In anger, Vivek tore up the old bill.
मशीन ने कुछ ही मिनटों में सारी बर्फ़ पीस डाली।
maśīn ne kuch hī minaṭoṃ meṃ sārī barf pīs ḍālī.
The machine ground up all the ice in only a few minutes.
ज़ोया ने एक रात में पूरा मसौदा लिख डाला।
zoyā ne ek rāt meṃ pūrā masaudā likh ḍālā.
Zoya wrote the entire draft in a single night.
The last example need not be negative. लिख डाला can express impressed surprise at the scale or speed of the achievement. Context decides whether the evaluation is admiration, alarm, irritation, or simple dramatic emphasis.
Simple perfective versus forceful completion
A simple perfective neutrally reports a bounded event. Adding डालना foregrounds the way the actor crosses the event boundary and often invites an attitude toward the result.
अनिता ने अनावश्यक अनुच्छेद काटे।
anitā ne anāvaśyak anucched kāṭe.
Anita cut the unnecessary paragraphs.
अनिता ने अनावश्यक अनुच्छेद काट डाले।
anitā ne anāvaśyak anucched kāṭ ḍāle.
Anita cut out all the unnecessary paragraphs decisively.
The lexical content and completed event are the same. काटे records the edit; काट डाले portrays a more thorough or sweeping removal. English may use all, out, completely, or merely an emphatic tone, but no one English word corresponds to डालना in every compound.
The vector can also mark a socially striking utterance:
वह हर बहस में कोई निजी बात कह डालता है।
vah har bahas meṃ koī nijī bāt kah ḍāltā hai.
In every argument he blurts out something personal.
Here कह डालता है is habitual in form, but each occurrence is presented as a bounded, impulsive act. Simple कहता है would report what he says without the same sense of an abrupt threshold crossed.
Physical force, thorough consumption, and unexpected achievement
Three clusters are especially productive:
- destructive or transformative acts: जला डालना, तोड़ डालना, मिटा डालना;
- thorough consumption: खा डालना, पी डालना;
- striking production or disclosure: लिख डालना, कह डालना, बना डालना.
नगर निगम ने जर्जर दीवार गिरा डाली।
nagar nigam ne jarjar dīvār girā ḍālī.
The municipal corporation demolished the crumbling wall.
गिरा- is the transitive causative stem “cause to fall,” and डाली presents the demolition as carried through. Feminine दीवार controls agreement.
बच्चों ने रास्ते में ही सारे आम खा डाले।
baccoṃ ne rāste meṃ hī sāre ām khā ḍāle.
The children ate up all the mangoes on the way.
The total object सारे आम supports the thorough-consumption reading. With an unbounded activity and no salient endpoint, डालना is usually less natural. This is why speakers do not attach it freely to every verb simply to mean “very much.”
उसने पुराने खाते को पूरी तरह मिटा डाला।
usne purāne khāte ko pūrī tarah miṭā ḍālā.
He or she completely erased the old account.
Because पुराने खाते को is marked by को, it cannot control agreement; डाला is default masculine singular. The phrase पूरी तरह reinforces thoroughness but does not create the vector construction.
Lexical डालना versus vector डालना
Lexical डालना still means “put, add, insert, pour.” It has its own object and location or container:
रवि ने सूप में बहुत नमक डाल दिया।
ravi ne sūp meṃ bahut namak ḍāl diyā.
Ravi put too much salt in the soup.
Here डाल- is the lexical stem “put/add,” and final दिया is the vector. In नमक डाल दिया, salt is actually added. In बिल फाड़ डाला, final डाला is the vector and no destination is involved. Position and predicate structure—not the English gloss alone—distinguish the two uses.
Noun–verb predicates can feed vector डालना through their light verb:
उसने सबके सामने अचानक घोषणा कर डाली।
usne sabke sāmne acānak ghoṣṇā kar ḍālī.
He or she suddenly went ahead and made the announcement in front of everyone.
The internal order is noun घोषणा + light verb कर- + vector डाली. English order cannot be copied as an invented कर घोषणा डाली. Feminine घोषणा controls the perfective vector.
डालना outside the simple past
The vector is not itself a past-tense marker. It can carry future, habitual, or imperative morphology while retaining its forceful or evaluative profile.
मुझे डर है कि वह यह बात सबके सामने कह डालेगा।
mujhe ḍar hai ki vah yah bāt sabke sāmne kah ḍālegā.
I'm afraid he will blurt this out in front of everyone.
ग़ुस्से में लंबा जवाब लिख मत डालना।
ġusse meṃ lambā javāb likh mat ḍālnā.
Don't go and write a long reply in anger. (informal warning)
Future डालेगा profiles a feared eventual crossing of the boundary. In the warning, मत intervenes between the lexical stem and infinitival vector. The compound remains one predicate even though a negative particle separates its two verbal elements.
In careful neutral instructions, डालना may sound needlessly dramatic. (formal) administrative prose normally prefers a simple verb or a neutral vector unless force or destruction is genuinely relevant. (literary) narration can exploit नष्ट कर डाला or मार डाला for vivid evaluation.
Agreement and ergativity
Perfective vector डालना is transitive. Its agent normally takes ने, and an eligible unmarked object controls agreement.
नेहा ने पुरानी तस्वीरें जला डालीं।
nehā ne purānī tasvīreṃ jalā ḍālīṃ.
Neha burned up the old photographs.
Feminine plural तस्वीरें controls standalone डालीं. Before an auxiliary, number appears on the auxiliary:
नेहा ने पुरानी तस्वीरें जला डाली हैं।
nehā ne purānī tasvīreṃ jalā ḍālī haiṃ.
Neha has burned up the old photographs.
The bare lexical stem never agrees. The sequence is not जलाई डालीं; only the final vector bears the participial agreement morphology.
Negating the forceful result
Plain denial often chooses the simple verb because there is no attained endpoint to emphasize. The compound remains natural when a feared or contrasted result is specifically denied.
मैंने तस्वीरें जला नहीं डालीं; उन्हें अलग लिफ़ाफ़े में रख दिया है।
maĩne tasvīreṃ jalā nahīṃ ḍālīṃ; unheṃ alag lifāfe meṃ rakh diyā hai.
I didn't burn up the photographs; I put them in a separate envelope.
The speaker denies the alarming जला डालीं result, not merely the occurrence of some burning activity. This discourse contrast keeps the marked vector meaningful under negation.
A dialogue: attitude changes the vector
पुराने काग़ज़ कहाँ हैं?
purāne kāġaz kahā̃ haiṃ?
Where are the old papers?
मैंने उन्हें बेकार समझकर फेंक दिया।
maĩne unheṃ bekār samajhkar pheṅk diyā.
I thought they were useless and threw them away.
तुमने सारे काग़ज़ फेंक डाले? उनमें रसीदें भी थीं!
tumne sāre kāġaz pheṅk ḍāle? unmeṃ rasīdeṃ bhī thīṃ!
You threw out all the papers? There were receipts among them! (informal, alarmed)
The second speaker neutrally reports disposal with फेंक दिया. The reply recasts the same event as sweeping and alarming through फेंक डाले. The vector does not encode anger by itself; context and intonation create that evaluation from its forceful-completion profile.
Common Mistakes
1. Inflecting the lexical verb too
❌ उसने पुराना पोस्टर फाड़ा डाला।
Incorrect — the lexical verb must be bare before vector डालना.
✅ उसने पुराना पोस्टर फाड़ डाला।
usne purānā posṭar phāṛ ḍālā.
He or she tore up the old poster.
2. Translating डालना as a separate act of putting
❌ उसने गरम चाय पी डाली मेज़ पर।
Incorrect — vector डालना does not take a destination meaning 'put on the table.'
✅ उसने गरम चाय एक ही घूँट में पी डाली।
usne garam cāy ek hī ghū̃ṭ meṃ pī ḍālī.
He or she drank down the hot tea in a single gulp.
3. Ignoring object agreement
❌ सिया ने सारी पुरानी तस्वीरें जला डाला।
Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural तस्वीरें controls the vector.
✅ सिया ने सारी पुरानी तस्वीरें जला डालीं।
siyā ne sārī purānī tasvīreṃ jalā ḍālīṃ.
Siya burned up all the old photographs.
4. Omitting ने in a perfective transitive compound
❌ रीना सारे पुराने संदेश मिटा डाले।
Incorrect — perfective transitive मिटा डालना requires रीना ने.
✅ रीना ने सारे पुराने संदेश मिटा डाले।
rīnā ne sāre purāne sandeś miṭā ḍāle.
Reena erased all the old messages completely.
5. Using डालना for a neutral routine
❌ मैं हर सुबह दवा पी डालता हूँ।
Poor for a neutral routine — पी डालता हूँ makes each dose sound forceful, excessive, or strongly evaluated.
✅ मैं हर सुबह दवा पीता हूँ।
maĩ har subah davā pītā hū̃.
I take medicine every morning. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Vector डालना profiles a forceful, thorough, abrupt, or evaluated crossing of an event boundary.
- The lexical verb stays bare; डालना carries inflection and, in a perfective transitive clause, object agreement.
- Physical force is only one reading. The vector can also mark impressive production, impulsive disclosure, or excessive consumption.
- Lexical डालना “put/add” and vector डालना have different predicate structures.
- Negated डालना compounds are natural when a feared or contrasted forceful result remains in focus.
