बैठना as regrettable or settled action

After a bare verb stem, बैठना can present an action as unexpectedly settling into an accomplished fact, often one the speaker regards as mistaken, regrettable, excessive, or difficult to undo: कह बैठना “blurt out,” खो बैठना “end up losing,” समझ बैठना “mistakenly take to be,” कर बैठना “go and do.” The vector does not describe literal sitting.

Regret is frequent but not compulsory. प्रेम कर बैठना may present falling in love as unplanned commitment rather than as a mistake; ठान बैठना can suggest stubborn resolution. The broader compound architecture is introduced under compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector.

Bare stem + inflected बैठना

Lexical eventCompoundTypical profile
कह- “say”कह बैठाsaid something unplanned or regrettable
खो- “lose”खो बैठीended up losing
समझ- “understand/take as”समझ बैठेsettled on an often mistaken interpretation
कर- “do”कर बैठींwent and did, with evaluation

मैं ग़ुस्से में ऐसी बात कह बैठा।

maĩ ġusse meṃ aisī bāt kah baiṭhā.

In anger, I ended up saying such a thing. (male speaker)

वह जल्दबाज़ी में ज़रूरी काग़ज़ खो बैठी।

vah jaldabāzī meṃ zarūrī kāġaz kho baiṭhī.

In her haste, she ended up losing an important document.

हम उसकी चुप्पी को सहमति समझ बैठे।

ham uskī cuppī ko sahmati samajh baiṭhe.

We mistook his silence for agreement.

The lexical stem is bare, and बैठा/बैठी/बैठे/बैठीं carries agreement and outer TAM.

💡
Vector बैठना presents the result as having become settled before the subject fully intended or assessed it. English often needs end up, go and, or mistakenly.

Neutral completed action versus evaluated outcome

नील ने सबको राज़ बताया।

nīl ne sabko rāz batāyā.

Neel told everyone the secret.

नील सबके सामने राज़ बता बैठा।

nīl sabke sāmne rāz batā baiṭhā.

Neel went and blurted out the secret in front of everyone.

This minimal pair keeps Neel and the disclosure constant. Simple बताया neutrally reports a transitive perfective and takes ने. बता बैठा evaluates the disclosure as an unplanned, consequential result; in the neutral vector pattern, Neel is unmarked and controls बैठा.

रीना ने गलत तारीख़ लिखी।

rīnā ne galat tārīx likhī.

Reena wrote the wrong date.

रीना जल्दबाज़ी में गलत तारीख़ लिख बैठी।

rīnā jaldabāzī meṃ galat tārīx likh baiṭhī.

In her haste, Reena ended up writing the wrong date.

The second does more than mark completion. It frames the mistake as an outcome now on record.

Regret, error, and unintended consequence

The vector is especially natural when the subject's action creates a problematic result.

वह बिना जाँचे झूठी ख़बर साझा कर बैठा।

vah binā jā̃ce jhūṭhī xabar sājhā kar baiṭhā.

He ended up sharing false news without checking it.

मैं एक ही दिन में सारे पैसे ख़र्च कर बैठी।

maĩ ek hī din meṃ sāre paise xarc kar baiṭhī.

I went and spent all the money in a single day. (female speaker)

उन्होंने ग़लत व्यक्ति को गोपनीय फ़ाइल भेज दी। इस तरह वे बड़ी भूल कर बैठे।

unhoṃne ġalat vyakti ko gopnīya fāil bhej dī. is tarah ve baṛī bhūl kar baiṭhe.

They sent the confidential file to the wrong person. In doing so, they made a serious mistake. (plural or respectful)

The last sentence first reports the action with भेज दी, then evaluates it with भूल कर बैठे. The vector belongs to the evaluative predicate, not to the file itself.

The outcome need not be morally bad:

वह पहली मुलाक़ात में ही उससे प्रेम कर बैठा।

vah pahlī mulāqāt meṃ hī usse prem kar baiṭhā.

He fell in love with her at their very first meeting.

Here the action is unplanned and settled, but the speaker may view it tenderly, humorously, or critically. Context decides the evaluation.

Mistaken belief and settled interpretation

समझ बैठना and मान बैठना often mean that someone adopts a belief too quickly or incorrectly.

मैं दूर से उसे अपना पुराना मित्र समझ बैठा।

maĩ dūr se use apnā purānā mitra samajh baiṭhā.

From a distance, I mistook him for my old friend. (male speaker)

वह एक अफ़वाह को सच मान बैठी।

vah ek afvāh ko sac mān baiṭhī.

She took a rumor to be true.

लोग उसकी विनम्रता को कमजोरी मान बैठे।

log uskī vinamratā ko kamzorī mān baiṭhe.

People mistook his humility for weakness.

The को...समझना/मानना frame supplies the object and its interpreted category. बैठना says that this classification became settled, commonly before adequate evidence. English word order cannot be copied: the object precedes the category, and the compound predicate remains at the end.

Case and agreement: बैठना makes the subject the controller

As an intransitive vector, बैठना normally takes an unmarked subject and agrees with it, even when the lexical event involves an object.

सायरा अपना फ़ोन टैक्सी में छोड़ बैठी।

sāyrā apnā fon ṭaiksī meṃ choṛ baiṭhī.

Saira ended up leaving her phone in the taxi.

दोनों सहायक एक ही ग़लती कर बैठे।

donoṃ sahāyak ek hī ġaltī kar baiṭhe.

Both assistants ended up making the same mistake.

दादी जी पुराना पासवर्ड सबको बता बैठीं।

dādī jī purānā pāsvard sabko batā baiṭhīṃ.

Grandmother inadvertently told everyone the old password. (honorific)

Feminine Saira selects बैठी, plural सहायक selects बैठे, and a respected feminine singular referent can take बैठीं. There is no ergative ने in these vector compounds. Compare the simple perfective सायरा ने फ़ोन छोड़ा, which has a different viewpoint and alignment.

💡
Do not carry ने over from the simple transitive verb. In the V + बैठना pattern, final intransitive बैठना normally makes the subject unmarked and controls agreement.

Other TAM forms express propensity, warning, or possibility

वह जल्दबाज़ी में अक्सर ग़लत फ़ाइल भेज बैठता है।

vah jaldabāzī meṃ aksar ġalat fāil bhej baiṭhtā hai.

In his haste, he often ends up sending the wrong file.

बिना पढ़े हस्ताक्षर करोगे, तो मुसीबत मोल ले बैठोगे।

binā paṛhe hastākṣar karoge, to musībat mol le baiṭhoge.

If you sign without reading, you'll land yourself in trouble. (informal)

कहीं वह मेरी चुप्पी को नाराज़गी न समझ बैठे।

kahīṃ vah merī cuppī ko nārāzgī na samajh baiṭhe.

I'm afraid he may mistake my silence for anger.

Habitual बैठता है presents a recurring tendency, future बैठोगे warns of an outcome, and subjunctive बैठे appears in an apprehensive frame. The vector is not a special past tense.

The idiom मुसीबत मोल ले बैठना contains lexical ले- inside the idiom and vector बैठना outside it. Longer predicates remain interpretable when each layer has a conventional contribution.

Negation and prevention

Neutral negation often uses the simple verb:

उसने बैठक में राज़ नहीं बताया।

usne baiṭhak meṃ rāz nahīṃ batāyā.

He did not reveal the secret in the meeting.

The vector remains natural when the “ended up” result is denied, prevented, or feared:

वह कोई बड़ी ग़लती नहीं कर बैठा; समय रहते रुक गया।

vah koī baṛī ġaltī nahīṃ kar baiṭhā; samay rahte ruk gayā.

He did not end up making a serious mistake; he stopped in time.

ध्यान रखना, कहीं पुराना मसौदा न भेज बैठना।

dhyān rakhnā, kahīṃ purānā masaudā na bhej baiṭhnā.

Be careful not to accidentally send the old draft. (informal)

The second is a warning against an unintended settled result. Negation is compatible with बैठना when that result remains conceptually active.

Distinguishing lexical बैठना

In वह कुर्सी पर बैठी, बैठना is the only verb and means “sit.” In वह ग़लती कर बैठी, it follows bare कर- and evaluates the completed mistake.

वह कुर्सी पर बैठी और अनजाने में गलत बटन दबा बैठी।

vah kursī par baiṭhī aur anjāne meṃ galat baṭan dabā baiṭhī.

She sat on the chair and accidentally pressed the wrong button.

The first बैठी describes posture; the second is the vector in दबा बैठी. A single English word sat cannot capture both.

A short dialogue: speaker attitude becomes explicit

तुमने ग्राहक से क्या कह दिया?

tumne grāhak se kyā kah diyā?

What did you say to the client? (informal)

मैं ग़ुस्से में उसे लापरवाह कह बैठा।

maĩ ġusse meṃ use lāparvāh kah baiṭhā.

In anger, I ended up calling him careless. (male speaker)

अब तुरंत माफ़ी माँगो, वरना वह इसे अपमान समझ बैठेगा।

ab turant māfī mā̃go, varnā vah ise apmān samajh baiṭhegā.

Apologize immediately, or he may take it as an insult. (informal)

The opening कह दिया asks about the released words. The reply switches to कह बैठा to frame them as regretted and insufficiently controlled. The warning uses future समझ बैठेगा for a potentially settled misinterpretation.

Common Mistakes

❌ नील ने राज़ बता बैठा।

Incorrect in the neutral बैठना-vector pattern — the subject is unmarked and controls बैठा.

✅ नील राज़ बता बैठा।

nīl rāz batā baiṭhā.

Neel ended up revealing the secret.

❌ रीना गलत तारीख़ लिख बैठा।

Incorrect — feminine रीना requires बैठी.

✅ रीना गलत तारीख़ लिख बैठी।

rīnā galat tārīx likh baiṭhī.

Reena ended up writing the wrong date.

❌ उसने मुझे चोर समझा बैठा।

Incorrect — the lexical stem must be bare समझ- before vector बैठा.

✅ वह मुझे चोर समझ बैठा।

vah mujhe cor samajh baiṭhā.

He mistook me for a thief.

❌ वह कुर्सी पर कर बैठा।

Incorrect for literal ‘sat on the chair’ — कर बैठा means ‘ended up doing,’ not physical sitting.

✅ वह कुर्सी पर बैठ गया।

vah kursī par baiṭh gayā.

He sat down on the chair.

❌ वह अक्सर गलत फ़ाइल भेज बैठ रहा है।

Wrong for the intended recurring tendency — the progressive describes a current unfolding episode.

✅ वह अक्सर गलत फ़ाइल भेज बैठता है।

vah aksar galat fāil bhej baiṭhtā hai.

He often ends up sending the wrong file.

Key Takeaways

Vector बैठना presents an action or interpretation as unexpectedly settled, often with regret, error, excess, or difficult-to-reverse commitment. The evaluation is contextual, so positive or ambivalent uses are possible. The subject remains unmarked and controls agreement, even when the lexical verb is transitive. Habitual, future, subjunctive, and negative forms preserve the settled-result profile, while literal posture बैठना has a different structure.
