After a bare verb stem, पड़ना can present an event as beginning suddenly, spontaneously, or with limited control: रो पड़ना “burst into tears,” हँस पड़ना “burst out laughing,” बोल पड़ना “blurt out,” दौड़ पड़ना “set off running.” The vector does not literally mean that the subject falls.
This pattern is strongly tied to conventional combinations and event types. It is common with reactions, sounds, and sudden motion, not a general suffix meaning “start.” The architecture follows compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector.
Bare stem + inflected पड़ना
| Lexical event | Compound | Typical contribution |
|---|---|---|
| रो- “cry” | रो पड़ा | crying began suddenly |
| हँस- “laugh” | हँस पड़ी | laughter escaped spontaneously |
| बोल- “speak” | बोल पड़े | speech broke out / was blurted |
| दौड़- “run” | दौड़ पड़ी | set off running |
पुरानी तस्वीर देखकर वह रो पड़ी।
purānī tasvīr dekhkar vah ro paṛī.
She burst into tears on seeing the old photograph.
उसका जवाब सुनकर सब हँस पड़े।
uskā javāb sunkar sab hãs paṛe.
Everyone burst out laughing when they heard his answer.
दरवाज़ा खुलते ही बच्चा बाहर दौड़ पड़ा।
darvāzā khulte hī baccā bāhar dauṛ paṛā.
As soon as the door opened, the child dashed outside.
The lexical stem is bare. पड़ा/पड़ी/पड़े/पड़ीं carries agreement and outer TAM.
Neutral event versus spontaneous onset
मीरा हँसी।
mīrā hãsī.
Meera laughed.
मीरा उसकी नकल देखकर हँस पड़ी।
mīrā uskī nakal dekhkar hãs paṛī.
Meera burst out laughing when she saw his imitation.
This minimal pair keeps Meera's laughter constant. Simple हँसी reports the event. हँस पड़ी presents the first moment as sudden and not fully restrained.
राहुल बोला।
rāhul bolā.
Rahul spoke.
राहुल अचानक सच बोल पड़ा।
rāhul acānak sac bol paṛā.
Rahul suddenly blurted out the truth.
बोल पड़ा often suggests that the words escaped before careful planning. The actual content can still be deliberate or truthful; the vector comments on the onset, not on the truth value.
Limited control is a tendency, not total absence of agency
Speakers can use पड़ना when an action is triggered so quickly that it feels reactive, even if the person has some control.
सीटी बजते ही खिलाड़ी मैदान की ओर दौड़ पड़े।
sīṭī bajte hī khilāṛī maidān kī or dauṛ paṛe.
As soon as the whistle blew, the players set off running toward the field.
अन्याय की बात सुनकर वह बहस करने लगा और फिर चिल्ला पड़ा।
anyāy kī bāt sunkar vah bahas karne lagā aur phir cillā paṛā.
On hearing about the injustice, he began arguing and then suddenly shouted.
The players intentionally run, but the whistle creates a sharply triggered onset. चिल्ला पड़ा presents the shout as a sudden escalation. “Involuntary” therefore means weakly planned or reaction-like, not medically uncontrollable in every use.
The construction can also describe nonhuman events:
दोपहर होते-होते बादल बरस पड़े।
dopahar hote-hote bādal baras paṛe.
By afternoon, the clouds suddenly burst into rain.
No agent is present. The onset itself is the point.
Agreement and case: the subject remains unmarked
Vector पड़ना is intransitive and subject-oriented. The subject normally appears without ने, and the vector agrees with it—even when the lexical event could take content as an object.
नैना सबके सामने राज़ बोल पड़ी।
nainā sabke sāmne rāz bol paṛī.
Naina blurted out the secret in front of everyone.
दोनों बहनें एक साथ रो पड़ीं।
donoṃ bahneṃ ek sāth ro paṛīṃ.
Both sisters burst into tears together.
दादा जी यह सुनकर हँस पड़े।
dādā jī yah sunkar hãs paṛe.
Grandfather burst out laughing when he heard this. (honorific)
Feminine Naina controls पड़ी; feminine plural बहनें controls पड़ीं; singular honorific दादा जी takes plural पड़े. Adding ने would wrongly force an ergative analysis onto an intransitive vector compound.
Other TAM forms retain the onset profile
The construction occurs beyond one completed event.
वह छोटी-सी बात पर हँस पड़ता है।
vah choṭī-sī bāt par hãs paṛtā hai.
He tends to burst out laughing at the smallest thing.
यह सुनकर बच्चे रो पड़ेंगे।
yah sunkar bacce ro paṛeṅge.
The children will burst into tears when they hear this.
कहीं वह बैठक में सच न बोल पड़े।
kahīṃ vah baiṭhak meṃ sac na bol paṛe.
I'm afraid he might blurt out the truth in the meeting.
Habitual पड़ता है describes a recurring propensity, future पड़ेंगे predicts an onset, and subjunctive पड़े appears in an apprehensive कहीं...न frame. None literally means “fall.”
Negation and the absence of onset
Neutral negation often chooses the simple verb because no special onset occurred.
वह मज़ाक पर नहीं हँसी।
vah mazāk par nahīṃ hãsī.
She did not laugh at the joke.
The compound is useful when the specifically sudden reaction is denied or prevented:
वह हँसी तो सही, पर हँस नहीं पड़ी।
vah hãsī to sahī, par hãs nahīṃ paṛī.
She did laugh, but she did not burst out laughing.
मंच पर जाकर घबराकर बोल मत पड़ना।
mañc par jākar ghabrākar bol mat paṛnā.
Don't get nervous and blurt something out on stage. (informal)
The contrast proves that simple event and sudden-onset event are not synonyms. Negating पड़ना is grammatical when onset is independently relevant.
Distinguishing three uses of पड़ना
Hindi पड़ना has several structures:
| Structure | Example | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| lexical पड़ना | किताब मेज़ पर पड़ी है | the book lies/is lying |
| necessity | मुझे जाना पड़ा | I had to go |
| onset vector | मैं हँस पड़ा | I burst out laughing |
हमें बारिश में बाहर रुकना पड़ा।
hameṃ bāriś meṃ bāhar ruknā paṛā.
We had to stay outside in the rain.
The necessity construction contains an infinitive रुकना, not a bare lexical stem रुक-, and the affected participant is dative हमें. It belongs to पड़ना for external necessity, not to sudden-onset रुक पड़ना.
पड़ना versus उठना
Both vectors can highlight an onset, but they are not freely interchangeable. पड़ना often presents the subject as falling into a reaction or setting off; उठना often presents a reaction, sound, light, or emotion as surging into salience.
बच्चा डरकर रो पड़ा।
baccā ḍarkar ro paṛā.
The child burst into tears from fear.
पुरानी धुन सुनकर पूरा हॉल गूँज उठा।
purānī dhun sunkar pūrā hol gū̃j uṭhā.
On hearing the old tune, the whole hall suddenly resounded.
The contrast is a semantic tendency and lexical preference, not a formula that predicts every verb. Learn रो पड़ना, बोल पड़ना, गूँज उठना, चमक उठना as established pairings.
A short dialogue: reaction and speaker stance
तुम बैठक में अचानक क्यों बोल पड़े?
tum baiṭhak meṃ acānak kyoṃ bol paṛe?
Why did you suddenly speak up in the meeting? (informal)
उसने सीमा पर झूठा आरोप लगाया, तो मैं तुरंत बोल पड़ा।
usne sīmā par jhūṭhā ārop lagāyā, to maĩ turant bol paṛā.
He falsely accused Seema, so I spoke up immediately. (male speaker)
ठीक किया, पर अगली बार ग़ुस्से में चिल्ला मत पड़ना।
ṭhīk kiyā, par aglī bār ġusse meṃ cillā mat paṛnā.
You did the right thing, but next time don't suddenly start shouting in anger. (informal)
The first speaker treats the intervention as abrupt. The reply presents it as an immediate reaction. The advice does not prohibit all speech; it warns against an uncontrolled onset of shouting.
Common Mistakes
❌ मीरा मज़ाक सुनकर हँस पड़ा।
Incorrect — feminine मीरा requires vector पड़ी.
✅ मीरा मज़ाक सुनकर हँस पड़ी।
mīrā mazāk sunkar hãs paṛī.
Meera burst out laughing when she heard the joke.
❌ नैना ने राज़ बोल पड़ी।
Incorrect — intransitive vector पड़ना takes an unmarked subject and agrees with it.
✅ नैना राज़ बोल पड़ी।
nainā rāz bol paṛī.
Naina blurted out the secret.
❌ बच्चे रोए पड़े।
Incorrect — the lexical verb must be bare before the vector.
✅ बच्चे अचानक रो पड़े।
bacce acānak ro paṛe.
The children suddenly burst into tears.
❌ मुझे हँसना पड़ा यानी मैं अचानक हँस पड़ा।
Incorrect equivalence — हँसना पड़ा expresses external necessity, while हँस पड़ा expresses sudden onset.
✅ मुझे अभिनय के लिए हँसना पड़ा, लेकिन मैं सचमुच नहीं हँसा।
mujhe abhinay ke lie hãsnā paṛā, lekin maĩ sacmuc nahīṃ hãsā.
I had to laugh for the performance, but I did not genuinely laugh. (male speaker)
❌ वह हर बात पर हँस पड़ रहा है।
Wrong for the intended recurring tendency — the progressive presents one ongoing episode, not a habit.
✅ वह हर बात पर हँस पड़ता है।
vah har bāt par hãs paṛtā hai.
He bursts out laughing at everything.
Key Takeaways
Vector पड़ना presents the onset of an event as sudden, reactive, or weakly controlled. It is especially common with crying, laughter, speech, sound, rain, and abrupt motion, but combinations are lexical rather than unlimited. The subject stays unmarked and controls agreement; habitual, future, subjunctive, and negative forms preserve the onset meaning. Lexical पड़ना and infinitive-plus-पड़ना necessity have different structures and argument patterns.
